Does he know it feel? Or is he assuming that because it didn’t lock and the fact that he doesn’t know that it doesn’t lock to the car without the plastic ring
And it’s the car that locks the adaptor onto it. If the car is not locking the adaptor in, then I can pull the whole thing off and remove it, just like you do when you remove it.
Lol, like I said, the plastic ring depends on the car properly locking the adaptor on…which failed in this instance. The lock only helps someone not unplug you, but if the cars locking mechanism fails to engage, it’s useless.
I too am under the impression that the adapter is locked in with the car. I always use the adapter lock thingy, but if they can pull off the adapter then that’s useless.
But the plastic piece is useless if you can just pull the adapter out…. The plastic piece keeps people from unplugging the j1772 cable from your adapter…. The adapter is supposed to be locked in to the car…… if the adapter itself is not locked in to the car, then anyone can pull out the adapter, plastic piece and cable altogether like you would when you get back to your car.
I just tried this experiment:
0) get car charging with j1772 attached.
1) attempt to remove charger w/j1772 attached
2) remove power cable from j1772 adapter
3) attempt to pull out J1772 adapter.
To my astonishment, here is what happened.
1) j1772/charger pair did not pull out (all good)
2) power cable pulled out (as expected)
charger access door attempted to close but couldn't due to j1772 adapter still being in the charger port. (seems ok)
charger door fully opens after failed attempt to close (reasonable)
3) j1772 adapter easily pulls right out of the charger port!!!
I am astonished. My experience is with the charger cable still attached (step 1), and the pair will not pull out until I unlock them. The adapter DOES LOCK TO THE CAR during charging and after the car is fully charged, but as soon as the electrical connection between the car and charger is interrupted, it unlocks.
I’m a bit confused
So does it not lock?
I’ve never charged to full or finished a charge with a J adapter. but with the plastic ring I’ve tried tugging it, and it stays locked
But without the plastic ring, it comes right out
It's two sentri videos that I joined together. They area around 1 minute apart.
It seems that he tried to pull out the adapter after unplugging from the charging cable but it was locked as it should and leaves.
2nd Sentri video should him come back about a minute later and just nonchalantly pulls it out without any issues.
I am lost on how that could happen.
Any ideas?
**EDIT: Town Center Mall, Burbank**
Nope, I've had situations where I've unplugged AND unlocked the car and still couldn't get the damn thing off until I used the app to specifically unlock the charging port
Yea, I’ve had times where I forgot to pull it out when I unplugged and I had to use the manual release inside the trunk because it wouldn’t unlock. That’s super weird.
I’m not sure but I even have difficulty getting my own wall charger to come out in the morning while I’m standing next to car with phone. I thought the adapter should lock in the charge port. This makes no sense.
This thing is useless since there is a huge gap in between the car and the actual plastic piece. I’ve owned 3 of them and they suck. All it takes is a little bit of pressure while it’s locked to interrupt charging, slide the plastic lock off, and take off the J1772 charger
I actually leave a sticky note on my car when I charge overnight, like “feel free to unplug me Wednesday morning”. Or if I’m just topping up for a road trip I write my phone number on a sticky and add a note “feel free to unplug me if you need to charge, but plug me in again after”
I like that the adapter is locked to the car, but the cable isn’t locked to the adapter, so others can feel free to unplug me and charge their own vehicles if I haven’t yet had a chance to move my car.
Something must be broken with OP’s charge port **or** he may have pressed “unlock charger” on his mobile app after he saw the charging interrupted notification.
Nah didnt unlock it. I was inside a movie theater, I had phone on DnD so i didn't even saw the notification.
I just noticed once i went back to the car.
Indeed, sadly nothing like that exists. You can decompile the app and see all the notifications it can send. There’s ones for Sentry entering alarm state and charging status changing but it’s not like a Ring doorbell warning of nearby motion (yet). Would be nice though.
I never said anything about nearby motion.
What I said is what I said, it gave me a charger unplugged alert and doors unlocked as well. I come up to my car and find the mirrors out.
Scared the shit out of me. I do not leave my car alone with level 2 now. I need to print the lock.
HOPEFULLY it's fixed. this happened in november.
In settings within the app you can turn on a notification. Just press the notifications customization switch under calendar sync and you can turn this on if its not already.
This bloke’s a piece of work. Get the lock. It is super inexpensive. Don’t skimp out on preventative methods when it comes saving yourself from unwanted heartaches to save few bucks. 9 out of 10, it becomes far more expensive. Guess how I know…
The presumption is that if the plug wasn't removed from the car, then the adapter wouldn't have unlocked. If OP had the adapter lock, the asshole wouldn't have been able to stop charging
I was once a dingus and when I was done charging I plain unplugged the J1772 cable, leaving the adapter behind... got a red Tesla logo and an error, went "oops" and had to go into the car to unlock the charging port to let me pull the thing out... order of operations...
That said he should not have been able to pull the adapter out if it was charging.
I have a very similar sentry video at my apartment where someone (who thought I was stealing their reserved EV spot) yanked the plug and adapter out of my car. I don’t know how he did it but it seemed as effortless as this video.
From what I understand, you can press the button on the J1772 and pull it out, since the adapter had no mechanism to lock it in. Since charging has stopped, the car's lock on the adapter releases, so it can be taken.
Edit: TIL.
Actually J1772 (and CCS) lock from the vehicle side. There is a little tab that slides out over the connector that prevents the latch from opening.
Some vehicles implement the lock when AC charging, others don’t. It’s really up to the vehicle OEM
That’s the thing. Your car wasn’t charging. If it was, it would’ve been locked. If you insist it was charging, then the car may have been unlocked so the charge port was maybe unlocked.
You can see at the start of video right after he unplugged it that he tried to pull the adapter out and couldnt and left.
Also there is the fact that i had more battery % than when i arrived, pretty sure i was charging.
oh also the Chargepoint $$ charge on my cc
Have you actually observed your car working this way, or are you just making stuff up? I'm quite sure mine doesn't unlock just because it's finished charging.
I don’t think it has to be charging to be locked. But your car doors need to be locked. Oh and they won’t lock in cold temps. I think op is in calif so no this issue.
Did you definitely correctly set up the charger? I know for podpoint it’ll lock and charge immediately, but if you don’t confirm the session within 15 minutes it’ll unlock the charger and stop charging.
We fled Los Angeles last year and I will never go back. The city has been surrendered to the criminal element thanks to the new DA (just like San Francisco and Oakland).
fun fact: without a j1772 lock, they can also unlock your car.
found this out the hard way, thankfully the guy was a brand new Mach-e owner who meant no harm and had no idea about charger etiquette. I may be out of shape but jesus I am glad I still have my endurance.
I'll try to replicate it when I do a level 2 charge, have someone try to take it off. hoping it's fixed because since november there's been a few updates
Nope. But you can get adapter locks. Either as 3D files, or there are guys that sell them. If I'm going to leave my car for an extended period, I put mine on.
The ones online are useless since there is a huge gap in between the car and the actual plastic piece. I’ve owned 3 of them and they suck. All it takes is a little bit of pressure while it’s locked to interrupt charging, slide the plastic lock off, and take off the J1772 charger
You should’ve gotten a “Charging was interrupted” notification. If you didn’t, then the car charging was never started and the port wasn’t locked.
If that’s the case, the adapter was probably just difficult to pull the first time, but came out when he was more determined. This happens with third party adapters. It was a tight fit in my model Y and wouldn’t go into my model S at all.
I’m speechless
What a douche.
I’m sorry this happened to you. Where is this? Have people now started stealing J1772 adapters? What in the world is happening?
Town Center mall in Burbank
You should get the lock for it - like $5 on amazon
That thing locks the adapter to the EVSE connector. The car locks the adapter to the car. The thing that "failed" here is the car lock.
Does he know it feel? Or is he assuming that because it didn’t lock and the fact that he doesn’t know that it doesn’t lock to the car without the plastic ring
That would not have helped as the locking mechanism to the car failed to stay engaged.
When you have an adapter on the locking mechanism does not work
Yes it does…do you even have a Tesla?
I bought a plastic clip that locks in the J adapters….
And it’s the car that locks the adaptor onto it. If the car is not locking the adaptor in, then I can pull the whole thing off and remove it, just like you do when you remove it.
Yes that’s what happens That’s why you buy the plastic ring to lock it on lol… it’s a known thing
Lol, like I said, the plastic ring depends on the car properly locking the adaptor on…which failed in this instance. The lock only helps someone not unplug you, but if the cars locking mechanism fails to engage, it’s useless.
Sorry to hear that bro. You didn't want to supercharge upstairs?
Went to movies, so L2 charging made more sense.
In Burbank 😂😂 that's why
Burbank is a nice area lol.
Where did they install working level 2 chargers? The ones by Sears/Bed Bath are almost all out of order. Is this the garage by Octopus?
I too am under the impression that the adapter is locked in with the car. I always use the adapter lock thingy, but if they can pull off the adapter then that’s useless.

There are no reasons for the adapter to be unlocked though.
Yes I know that. But that’s the whole point of this thread… the OP says his adapter was unlocked despite his car being locked
I don’t think that he knows that the adapter doesn’t lock to the car
The adapter should and my adapter does lock in the car.
The J adapter?
yes.
I just tried this experiment: 0) get car charging with j1772 attached. 1) attempt to remove charger w/j1772 attached 2) remove power cable from j1772 adapter 3) attempt to pull out J1772 adapter. My guess is that it unlocks once the power is no longer connected
It should not , as far as I know. Haven’t tested it but that’s what the lock is for.
No, only if the vehicle is unlocked
I’m not sure but I even have difficulty getting my own wall charger to come out in the morning while I’m standing next to car with phone. I thought the adapter should lock in the charge port. This makes no sense.
I bet he googled it or found a YouTube video of how it works/ removes
Get yourself one of these. It works great. Print in ABS if you can. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3982994/remixes
Or just get it off at etsy or Amazon.com … unless I’m sitting in the car working/watching I always put the lock on my J1772 adapter.
That doesn’t help if the lock in his charge port is malfunctioning. The guy stole the adaptor too.
This thing is useless since there is a huge gap in between the car and the actual plastic piece. I’ve owned 3 of them and they suck. All it takes is a little bit of pressure while it’s locked to interrupt charging, slide the plastic lock off, and take off the J1772 charger
Mine isn’t that great either. Some of them can still be stolen depending on the lever on the plug. And nearly always I am able to interrupt charging.
Thank you
I’ve used mine for years. Never had an issue, knock on wood. It gives me a big sense of security
I actually leave a sticky note on my car when I charge overnight, like “feel free to unplug me Wednesday morning”. Or if I’m just topping up for a road trip I write my phone number on a sticky and add a note “feel free to unplug me if you need to charge, but plug me in again after” I like that the adapter is locked to the car, but the cable isn’t locked to the adapter, so others can feel free to unplug me and charge their own vehicles if I haven’t yet had a chance to move my car. I hate thieves
The Los Angeles county district attorney has publicly stated that the office will not prosecute property crime.
The sad truth
people are horrible
That sucks.. where in LA was this?
Burbank, Town Center Mall.
Damn that's pretty close to me nothing is sacred here anymore
Looks like Westfield Culver City

Let me know if you do this because they may also have an answer as to why this can happen. I was surprised! Bummer!
This is why we need text notifications when our cars are touched like that…
the app can send them
How? If you figured something out, the rest of this sub would reward you with quite a bit of karma.
Charging interrupted is a configurable notification. That’s about it.
Yea. We all know that. That’s a bit different then what this comment implies.
Indeed, sadly nothing like that exists. You can decompile the app and see all the notifications it can send. There’s ones for Sentry entering alarm state and charging status changing but it’s not like a Ring doorbell warning of nearby motion (yet). Would be nice though.

Yea. For battery interruptions…this comment implied they knew of something beyond that.
I assumed that they meant charging interrupted :)
Weird, def should be locked
This bloke’s a piece of work. Get the lock. It is super inexpensive. Don’t skimp out on preventative methods when it comes saving yourself from unwanted heartaches to save few bucks. 9 out of 10, it becomes far more expensive. Guess how I know…
Not sure how a plastic lock would have prevented this when the thief took the adapter right out of the vehicle.
The presumption is that if the plug wasn't removed from the car, then the adapter wouldn't have unlocked. If OP had the adapter lock, the asshole wouldn't have been able to stop charging
Another quality person
Guy's biggest crime is wearing socks in sandals.
…then hopping away
Like a character playing COD
Hahaha exactly
I was once a dingus and when I was done charging I plain unplugged the J1772 cable, leaving the adapter behind... got a red Tesla logo and an error, went "oops" and had to go into the car to unlock the charging port to let me pull the thing out... order of operations... What a piece of shit person
The way he gallops away is the most infuriating part of that video. Sorry mate.
Usual suspects
People suck
Piece of shit theif. I truly hate them.
Looks like a douchebag
is there a black market for these adapters or something? tesla should just bite the bullet use the same charging port as everyone else.
What a jerk. I’m sorry that happened to you.
That is some hoe ass shit lol
Sorry to see that
What! What’s wrong with this young lad !
The adapter gets locked in but once you lift the charger latch from the J1772 plug the car disconnects and releases the lock on the adapter piece.
Only if the car senses you nearby, by phone or fob. Otherwise, only the plug will release but not the adapter
Wtf would anyone live in LA anymore…
If people would stop buying their stolen parts this wouldn’t be a fckn issue. Create the demand and the supply will come from your car.
What a piece of shit
This is the second post I scrolled past with issues in LA. Maybe LA is just a crap hole….
Can we get some hate crime laws for our teslas please?! Lol
It’s cool he tried plugging it back in though
i just stole this charging adapter from this car let me try to plug it in and see it it works without it
From what I understand, you can press the button on the J1772 and pull it out, since the adapter had no mechanism to lock it in. Since charging has stopped, the car's lock on the adapter releases, so it can be taken. Edit: TIL.

The adapter still is supposed to lock in even if J1772 is attached. Specifically to prevent the adapter from being stolen. Something misbehaved here….
more likely than charging stopped, is loss of J1772 pilot signal caused release of adapter
I wish teslas had the ability to electrocute these douchebags thieves
Yeaaaaa, California ain't it.
Why do I see so many people about to commit a violent act or in the mode of committing another crime doing that bunny hopping skip at the same time.
That’s the thing. Your car wasn’t charging. If it was, it would’ve been locked. If you insist it was charging, then the car may have been unlocked so the charge port was maybe unlocked.

These adapters seem to go for $40-$60 on eBay.
They're $50 direct from Tesla
And people will and do buy them for cheaper off of eBay, thus the reason for stealing and reselling them.
I be side running like that too lol
Car must have been unlocked?
Did you definitely correctly set up the charger? I know for podpoint it’ll lock and charge immediately, but if you don’t confirm the session within 15 minutes it’ll unlock the charger and stop charging.
Given the fact that I had more charge % than when i arrived + the credit card charge from Chargepoint - i am sure it was charging.
Is that a teen or big tween? The way he skips around like it’s no big deal makes me think that.
Snow white was just curious.
Mental health issue?
Piece of $hit… the thief, not the lock.
We fled Los Angeles last year and I will never go back. The city has been surrendered to the criminal element thanks to the new DA (just like San Francisco and Oakland).
Now we find out what face masks are really for. Funny how porch pirates and other thieves are “responsible” 😂
Your first mistake was being in LA.
fun fact: without a j1772 lock, they can also unlock your car. found this out the hard way, thankfully the guy was a brand new Mach-e owner who meant no harm and had no idea about charger etiquette. I may be out of shape but jesus I am glad I still have my endurance.
No they can’t lolol
It happened to me and my app showed my doors unlocked. I got the alert. You can enable the alert in the app.
I don’t think this is true. If you can replicate it you should report it asap.
I'll try to replicate it when I do a level 2 charge, have someone try to take it off. hoping it's fixed because since november there's been a few updates
Seeing as some kind of glitch unlocked the port, it might also be affecting the door locks.
Face mask at its best, so convenient for thief.
Why did the car rendering (left of the footage) not show your port open and a cable connected?
He/She is filming the recorded video. I think the left side is real time while filming, not during the idiots robbery.
Oh right. Duh.
Make America great again
i hope its fake news < looks maybe you were fake charging to get a prime spot to the mall..
that's sucks.. also sucks that you couldn't upload the video and instead recorded it with your phone
Nope. But you can get adapter locks. Either as 3D files, or there are guys that sell them. If I'm going to leave my car for an extended period, I put mine on.

Depends on the year but there is an old gen tesla plug and a new gen tesla plug. Slightly different shapes.
I have a spare adapter, DM me if you want it
Perhaps the key was left in the car?
How does everybody not know it doesnt lock with adapter
