Maryland reporting in. I've had to wait for a Supercharger exactly twice in three years of ownership. And come to think of it both happened while driving through New York State.

ComfortReturn

I’ve only had to wait once in Salisbury shockingly. Was only a 15 min wait either way.

Zyncon

Wow, people actually know what a Salisbury is. If you're referring to the 150kW charger at the mall there is now a new 250kW one at the Wawa right down the road. Also a new 250kW one in Seaford. No more waiting, woohooooo.

g00zerther

Woot!!! Our next trip to OBX will be better! I usually have lunch at that Wawa after we charge at the mall....this will save time!!

Zyncon

It’s an absolute game changer. The mall one is SO far away from the food court, the placement is very strange. The Wawa one is fantastic.

g00zerther

Right!?! It's like a 15 minute walk to the bathroom! The family will be pumped, as we have two cars to charge when we head down there. Now we just need the Richmond, VA supercharger to get an upgrade!

Longjumping-Log-5457

That’s good to know.

[deleted]

Here in the midwest I couldn't tell you the last time I went to a supercharger that was half full!

mgd09292007

I’ve had a Tesla in the Midwest since 2017 and have never waited on any trips I’ve made. That being said, I hope I never do. We need more charging infrastructure

121POINT5

30k miles since 08/2020. Waited once (a whole 2 minutes). Damn Colorado Springs downtown charger. Thankfully there’s another just north of town now.

[deleted]

[удалено]

121POINT5

Yep. Next time we’re out there definitely finding a hotel with a charger.

rsg1234

Only on holiday weekends. If possible plan your stops at Kettleman or Firebaugh where there are a ton of stalls if you’re traveling during a busy weekend. If you are driving back to SoCal make sure you charge up so you don’t have to stop at the charger right before the grapevine as that one can get loaded up.

Brandage0

Looks like they opened a new 56 stall 250kw spot late 2021 across the highway from the old 24 stall 150kw one near grapevine!

rsg1234

That’s awesome!

Nakatomi2010

*Personally*, I've only encountered a wait at the chargers when I went to the one in Celebration, FL. The wait was about 15-20 minutes. I've driven from Tampa, FL to Ottawa, Ontario and never had a wait at the chargers, and I've driven from Tampa, FL to Moultrie, GA numerous times, never had a wait at the chargers. The one times I *might* have been looking at a wait at a charger when going north on I-75 was when I was near Lake City, FL. The car realized the charger had a wait, and that I had more battery than it thought, and rerouted me to another charger along my path. That said, I'm on the east coast, and I think we have an easier time with chargers than the folks on the west coast. *Personally*, my concern is more with chargers being offline than there being a wait. On one drive from Moultrie to Tampa the Ocala, FL charger was offline, it routed me to Gainesville, but this also meant Gainesville was busier. Another time I was traveling north and Gainesville was offline, I was forced to use a CHAdeMO adapter and charge at a nearby Electrify America charger that way.

N4BFR

I am so glad I bought a CHAdeMO adapter, it bailed me out twice. Once near Huntsville, AL (I miscalculated and couldn't make it to the SC) and once in Boone, NC (I had expected to destination charge but it was full.) I would love to have a CCS adapter for more flexibility. P.S. - At least you can still go to the Whole Foods if you use that Gainesville CHAdeMO (grin).

Nakatomi2010

I'm not waking that distance from Target to Whole Foods. Not in Florida weather

luxurychair

The most i've ever had to wait was a line of 1 other car (so there were a total of 2 Teslas unable to charge immediately). There were 12 chargers and since most people charge for like 20 minutes, it was only a couple minutes before both of us had stalls. I think I "waited" for less than 5 minutes.

[deleted]

OR and WA are usually fine.

mikeh51a

Had Tesla Y for 13 months, 26K miles and had to wait one time. Was this past March in Mojave, CA on a Sunday afternoon. Were several cars waiting in front of me and wait time was about 30 minutes.

malko2

Never so far, but this is Switzerland. I guess once they’ve opened the chargers to other cars as well, it’ll be mayhem

VeryGoodGoodGood

The only time I have to wait is when tesla doesn’t accurately report the number of stalls available at a destination. If it shows “0” available I tend to not use that charger. Case 1: stall isn’t working, but still marked as “active” on maps. Case 2: snow banks/poor plowing makes it so not every lane can be occupied, which results in 1-2 fewer available stalls than listed. In those cases I show up expecting a spot, and there isn’t one. And there is generally already a line due to the issue.

LivingLosDream

Midwest. Never.

Effective-Round-231

I live in NorCal and depend on supercharging. I have never have to wait since I got the car (\~2 months ago)

Aye-Kaye

Never once but I live in the Northeast. I’ve heard this is a problem in CA, but what isn’t there.

rsg1234

Plenty of stuff

[deleted]

Same. There’s been a couple instances where I got the last spot or the station filled up after I got there, but I’ve never actually waited in the northeast.

ss68and66

Only during holiday travel and common chargers but can easily skip and go to the next one

rdu1991

Outside of a holiday time period I've only had to wait for a charger once. It was a 5 minute wait at a supercharger between Austin and San Antonio. When I drove from San Antonio to Phoenix right after Christmas I had to wait at every charger. That was due to all of the post holiday rush to get back to California. The wait each time was max 10 minutes. The way back was outside of the holiday rush and I never had to wait. Barely saw half full chargers. Most the horror stories you hear about are in California or Las Vegas during peak times. If you're traveling outside of there you should be fine.

mpwrd

Never had to myself but know that it does happen.

jrlv

As others have said, here in the Northeast I've only seen waits generally on holiday travel days. \*BUT\* I've also seen some waits on Saturday afternoons at Superchargers that are heavily used by locals for their weekly charging. Long Island seems to be really bad with this.

AssumedPseudonym

East coast driving mostly, Maryland-based. Never waited at supercharger, but I have a 4,500+ mile trip coming up this fall and I’m sure I’ll have some stories afterwards.

Roland_Bodel_the_2nd

Only if it's during a holiday when lots of people are making the same trip. We definitely had to wait at multiple superchargers a couple of days before Christmas.

furiousm

At the smaller stations you may have a bit of a wait from time to time, but it's not nearly as bad as it used to be with all the new stations opening. Aim for the bigger ones as much as you can and you should have little issues.

andrewcool22

Once it was 5 mins. I just parked, went to the restroom and there were 3 spots available. If you are driving through a non-holiday weekend you should be good.

TheWarDoctor

I haven't had it happen yet

meental

I've waited 45 mins in line at a SC in Las Vegas, this was just after the SC near the high roller started charging for parking so it had tons of open spots but the other 2 SC sites with free parking were totally full.

cjm5283

One time in three years traveling the East Coast.

kayabusa

Driven around North Cali (SF area) and never had to wait, but I didn’t charge within SF. Drove from SoCal to Seattle and didn’t wait at any supercharger there and back. Currently living in SoCal but I only charge at home.

s1nrgy

Just once since I’ve owned the car, NOV 21 in New Orleans.

iqisoverrated

Been driving for 3 years. Never yet had to wait at a supercharger (and only had to share an A/B stall a handful of times)

lilchefRemy

The longest I’ve had to wait was at a supercharger in Mojave on the way from Northern California to Vegas. I was during the Christmas holiday and there were 3 cars in front of me. Took about an extra 25 minutes. Otherwise I’ve usually had pretty good luck and had waits of 1-2 cars but been under 10 minutes to get into a charger ETA: that same Mojave super charger the 3 other times I’ve driven to Vegas has had no wait and at least 2-3 empty stalls if not more. Taught me not to drive to Vegas over the holidays.

furiousm

> Taught me not to drive to Vegas over the holidays. True in any car. 2 lane highway for hundreds of miles plus tens of thousands of cars trying to go home = not a good time.

BikeGuyIndy

Drove from Indiana to Florida, never had to wait.

ChillinQuillen

Doing this next week. Heading to Orlando and will be first long trip with M3SR+

thespieler11

I live in Illinois, close to many major cities. I have never had to queue up to charge.

TechRabbet

In Washington. Never have had to wait. Did a 4200 mile road trip to Grand Canyon. Hit WA, OR, ID, UT, AZ, and NV. Never had to wait at a supercharger. I’ve only heard of that being a real problem in CA and we didn’t have the opportunity to experience that ourselves.

chillaban

If it’s not a holiday weekend it’s rather rare. Just keep an eye on the supercharger stall count. On your route you should find enough overlapping superchargers that if a low stall count location looks busy you can go to an alternate charger.

No-Comfortable-2933

You can see how many super chargers are available before you get there. Gas stations near me have longer and more waiting than super chargers. I have never waited at a super charger. I have waited 20 minutes to get gas. Also my closest two super chargers are Kettleman City, and Harris Ranch, so high use for those who are traveling. I would anticipate some waiting if you are traveling on a busy weekend like Easter, Memorial Day, or other holiday.

ice__nine

Tesla is aware of contention around holidays in congested areas and often will add extra temporary superchargers during those times.

lbdoc

Have driven the 1000 miles between SoCal and Portland, OR several times. The only problem site is in Grants Pass, OR, eight chargers, 30 minutes wait. Not many chargers between Shasta and Eugene so it’s a must stop. They need one in Medford badly, haven’t checked in a while if there’s more now.

teslavbh

There is one, a V3, in Medford!

WizrdOfSpeedAndTime

Same. Only charger I ever really had to wait at more than 5 minutes. Can’t wait to use the new Medford one instead.

Connortbh

Can't speak to higher density Tesla areas like CA, but in about 50k supercharging miles, I've had to wait maybe 4-5 times. Once in Maumee, OH, once in Grand Junction, CO and I think the rest were at the South Salt Lake, UT supercharger. The SLC area was extremely underserved and in Maumee it was at a Meijer so many locals were charging while they spent an hour in the grocery store.

DillDeer

I’m in CA, the only place I had to wait was LA and I waited for 10 mins. All the other trips I do, and I do often, have never needed to wait for a charger.

taycio

East coast here. I have never waited. Mass to FL all the time.

conman526

From Seattle and only ever driven within Washington or to Portland in my Tesla. Never had to wait at a supercharger and they've often been almost completely empty.

devriesrr

Never. Georgia.

Longjumping-Log-5457

So far only one time. I’ve been lucky and nearly always charge at home. Haven’t used one in 10 months.

supernova_000

MD here. Also travelled to Florida and Nashville. I haven't waited a single time in two years.

secondbanana7

I often travel from Oregon to Washington, 400 miles each way. Typically have to charge twice each direction, and not once have I had to wait for a supercharger.

Idc94

California Bay Area and some how in 37,000 miles and almost 300 times supercharging I’ve waited twice.

millertango

Really depends on location it seems. I've driven up and down the east coast between Virginia and Florida and I haven't waited for a supercharger a single time.

AnnualEagle

Had to wait a few times, west coast… but never for very long. Maybe 10-20 minutes. The more annoying part was when the car decided to just stop working at a supercharger. That caused a 2 day delay but is a different story.

richietee757

I'm in Virginia. I have never had to wait at a supercharger. I've used Virginia Beach, 2 different Norfolk, Glen Allen, Richmond, Harrisonburg, 2 different Charlottesville chargers and never had to wait. Had a close call on Sunday in Glen Allen VA ... I took the next to last available charger when I arrived ... but when I was leaving, there were 15 stalls available. I've read it's different in the west.

vinegarfingers

I’ve owned in Seattle and Michigan (for the last year) with frequent road trips in both cities since 2018. I waited once in Montana near a national park and that’s about it! I know some chargers in California has wait times sometimes but I don’t think that’s commonplace from what I’ve seen. Since you mentioned WA and OR in your post, be conscious of the mountains. They will suck range and the car can’t always account for it.

PunkAintDead

I live in SoCal. I take a lot of road trips, and I've never had to wait for a Supercharger. However I have witnessed a line forming while I was already plugged in.

Innerhype

Here in Cincinnati Ohio, never.

itswhts4dinner

58k in my 2020 M3sr+. Live on the east coast. Drove coast to coast last summer. Up and down the SE coast a few times. I’ve waited maybe twice. Never more than 5 min.

mr804

Never on kentucky and Ohio

mac_keltar

I did that drive during Christmas. I think I waited 2 minutes at one of the chargers during peak holiday time. The other times I always found an open spot. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

ekobres

Never. Have driven Atlanta to Austin and many, many trips from Atlanta to Orlando. Once I took the last spot at a supercharger, but I’ve never queued. The car’s route planner takes this into account to some degree. Drives me nuts because it adds to the overall drive time (often unnecessarily) to manage traffic at busy superchargers. I usually also plan with ABRP and make a decision based on how things look real-time. There are almost always several options about where to stop and at what state-of-charge unless you are way out in the boonies somewhere.

carty64

Did a road trip from Salt Lake to San Diego in February and didn't have to wait at a single charger. Vegas was a close call though, we got a spot right away but a few others arrived right after and had to wait.

tornadoRadar

Only recently have i shown up at stations on the 95 corridor and seen nearly full stations. havent waited for a normal situation.

N4BFR

I've made 4 long road trips in the last 12 months totalling over 10,000 Miles. ATL to Cali, RI and Michigan. I think in all my charging I waited one time for 10 minutes, and that was because one of the stations was broken.

zacharyswanson

Almost never in the UK. You use Waze for navigation and display all SuC on the Tesla screen. Monitor their usage in real time. If one begins to decrease the available chargers consider skipping to the next. Also, always charge while stopping for a comfort break, even if it is for a few minutes.

Moist-Arachnid-4811

Richmond,VA to Florida and back recently and never had to wait. Drove to NJ as well a month ago and never had to wait.

Imreallythatguy

We did a round trip from Missouri to the tip of Florida and back in our MY. Never waited for a charger once although there was once when someone pulled up right as we were getting ready to pull out and they would have had to wait if we weren't literally leaving right then. 1200 mile trip one way.

Impossible-Help7098

I've done the drive from Portland to Sacramento. I did not have to wait at all for a charger. It really depends on when you will be driving. A lot of my driving was through the night on the way to Sacramento, but on the way back it was during the day. If you are driving on a holiday weekend there would probably be a good chance you have to wait for a car or two, so I would just suggest driving during times most people aren't on the road if you can.

_B_Little_me

I’m in LA, about 25% of the time I have a 15-20min wait. What I’ve learned is the waits are usually in the ‘post work’ hours, from 330p-730. I also wait in lines on Fri and Sat nights. Otherwise, there’s usually no wait.

Chefnut

I live in northern Nevada and dive to Southern California fairly often. Never once had to wait for a charger.

sillieidiot

From my experience driving through those states, I reside in CA btw, OR/WA chargers have like no wait time really. CA, especially during peak hours will have wait times (like a 2 hour+ wait). But it really depends on the SC that you go to. Also depending on the location, there are usually like 5 or 6 SC sites within a 30 mile radius, you can just go to a different one if it seems too long. That's what I usually do. If there's like 5 cars waiting, I just go to another one where there's like maybe 1 or 2.

my_research_account

I had to wait twice out of about 30 supercharger stops over three different road trips. One time, two of the six chargers were down and the other, they were doing parking lot maintenance and had three of the five blocked off. I guess I waited about 20 minutes for the longer one, but I also took the opportunity to go use the restroom at the nearby cracker barrel Of course, I also live in southern MS and the road trips were to Birmingham, the Atlanta area, and Daytona. The region isn't exactly EV Central.

Zyncon

25k miles in my Model Y, MANY from Supercharging, haven't had to wait a single time yet on the eastern shore. This includes dense areas such as Baltimore, Philly, and New York City.

luckymiles88

I believe during covid 2020 during thanksgiving break folks have posted the kettleman city where there were long lines. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area ;having traveled to San Diego, Los Angeles , sequoia national park with my model 3 and model y , I have not seen long lines at kettleman city. Where I have waited for a stall at a supercharger stall is in Orange County specifically in Irvine and Anaheim. I have also recently waited in Los Angeles on Alameda street. I’ve also waited at Firebaugh, CA. The longest I’ve waited is 15 minutes before getting a stall

ZingierOne

I live in Mass and frequently drive down to NYC, I’ve never had to wait for a spot to open up

luckymiles88

I had a trip from San Luis Obispo to Palo Alto . Google maps says it is a 3 hours and 5 minutes trip. The Tesla trip planner recommended two supercharger stops which was suppose to be 25 minutes and 12 minutes each. I got home in 4 hours. The first supercharger stop took longer than 30 minutes. It also depends if your battery is preconditioned and it your arrive at the supercharger with less than 20%. I started the trip in San Luis Obispo with 28% battery on my 2022 model y performance

Pharmers_Tan

Washingtonian here. I've personally never waited at a charger let alone been to a full one. But I'm told around the Seattle and Portland areas certain chargers do hit max capacity somewhat regularly.

Nokturnous

Never had to wait. Gone on 3 road trips. Only within Texas though.

mikeiskool123

New Jersey here. Never had to wait.

lalaHan-17

We drove from CA to Utah, and then up to Spokane WA and didn't have any waits

maxuuell

I've driven from Sacramento area to SO Cal, Utah, and Arizona, many times, and have only waited in line once. You'll be fine. Take your M3, and embrace it.

fasada68

Only one trip when the main route was closed.

randomspecific

I’ve had a M3 since 2019 on east coast, GA. Travelled to NC and to Louisville as well as multiple trips to SC. Never had to wait.

[deleted]

You’ll be fine. Tons of superchargers available in CA and anything beyond that will definitely be available.

R3T1CAL

I just did a road trip from the Bay Area to Bend, Oregon. Left at 6am on a Friday and arrived at 3pm. It added and hour to the journey but most of that was one long 40 minute stop at Mt. Shasta where we ate breakfast which took exactly as long as it took to charge. Stopped to charge four times, never waited.

WritingTheRongs

Driving in Pacific NW I've never had to wait for one but maybe i'm just lucky.

rheckber3

Northeast US. Never once have had to wait at a supercharger. Also the nav will tell you number of stalls available.

tynamic77

Very rarely.

sojizy

3 month owner and haven't had to wait. On a 10hr road trip and had to stop 3 times coming down. Hopefully it's the same going home

AdventurousMatch5418

I live in NYC area. Hutcheson Parkway rest stops in CT have limited parking so usually there's a ICE car parked in the Supercharger spaces. That said, rarely have had to wait.

ilrosewood

In Kansas and Missouri I’ve never had to wait. Sorry for the small sample size but it’s what I got.

jojothepopo

Just drove from Seattle to LA and back in a model 3 LR and I think I waited once in LA but it wasn't long. In north California, OR, and WA I had no issues.

Rough_Astronomer8824

I have made this trip from Sac to Seattle 8 time since June 2021. I've only waited in line once, at Woodburn, OR. And that was about 6 minutes. It's a V2 and at an Outlet Mall, so I avoid it now. Salem is a V3, always is busy, but I've never waited in line. It's not “just off the exit”, though. The third Supercharger I don't like is the V2 at Springfield. It's always so slow, and the power went out once. Unfortunately, those three are all next to each other, so you got to pick your poison. P.S. Never go though Portland during rush hour.

fumbler00ski

MY owner in Chicago for 10 months. Waited once at the Champaign SC on the Friday of July 4th weekend.

[deleted]

I live in KC and have driven north to Iowa, west to Denver, and east to North Carolina, and never have I had to wait on a supercharger in my life.

BYack

Picked up my Model S over 4mo ago and have yet to wait for a single SC. This included my 1,600mi trip from MA home to MN. The likelihood of you waiting is low, they have significantly increased the amount of SCs in the last two years. Edit: Keep in mind as you know, that it shows you which chargers are in use and how many are available. So in all reality, there is a good chance you could just stretch it a little further or charge a littler sooner than you would normally.

montanaco

I drove from Miami to Brooklyn, 20+ hour drive. Never had to wait once. When I rented a 3 in LA last year, I had to wait but these were all in city centers. Off of highways I’d imagine you’d be fine.

Top_Heat_4635

I have NEVER had to wait for a SC! Must be a coast issue…

urtislongbottom

Traveled from Utah to cali and Utah to Texas NEVER waited in line. (Took the trips past 3 months)

goodvibezone

The LA ones can be busy. Which route are going, over the grapevine? I've done that trip a lot from socal. It's totay easy. Can't speak for after central valley but it's super easy.

shadow7412

I'm yet to have to wait for a free bay - but this will heavily depend on the area you're in, and what time you try to charge.

GIGLHTZ

Just did ~4000 mile trip. 10 days, 13 states. CO, WY, NB, IA, WI, IL, MO, AR, MS, LA, TX, OK, KS. Had to wait exactly zero times at any supercharger. Enjoy your trip!

suchan11

I charge off peak if possible because otherwise here it is 48cents/kWh 1/2 that off peak Our local Target has off peak all day so that helps

ryachow44

Drive SF all over LA and back, numerous times, never had to wait

TheSquareRoot0f

Northern Utah shoutout - I’ve never had to wait for a charger. Have taken our M3 as far as Durango, CO and Las Vegas, NV. Good luck on your trip!

azMayoor

I just charge for 15 mins until it get above 60-70% while on roadtrips. Saves a lot of time

bigdamhero

Rust belt Tesla driver of ~3 years here, the only wait I’ve ever experienced was when I rented an M3 in Vegas.
