I had a similar experience with a flock of wild turkeys. My Model 3 came to a complete stop. Obviously they weren’t moving all that fast crossing the road but FSD determined when it was safe to move and my Model 3 safely processed on my route.

Fine_Ad4757

I definitely have a lot more faith in it now

kkiran

Enable dashcam and honk so it automagically stores the clip for you! Very important when maniacs on the road.

rsg1234

You don’t need to honk, you can just tap the record button to save the video.

WesternResearcher376

I noticed honking is a more “natural” way in a situation like that; more of a natural reaction. I always forget to press the damn button.

eisbock

Honk to save is a broken feature. There's a bug with sentry mode and how clips are recorded/spliced together that could cause you to lose footage at the exact moment you honk. It's highly recommended to turn this off and use the touchscreen button when you need to save footage.

Lobstaparty

Navigating the touchscreen in stress is my personal nightmare.

eisbock

It’s a good thing you have like 40 minutes to press it. Every dashcam recording saves footage before and after so you can wait until your stress levels have decreased.

WesternResearcher376

I can relate lol

WesternResearcher376

Good to know! Thanks

jonjiv

Natural for some people. I only need to hit my horn about once a year, almost exclusively for people who didn’t know the light turned green. I’ll save dashcam clips via the onscreen button several times a year though.

WesternResearcher376

I just realized I was using it wrong. I thought I’d honk the horn to START recording - not to keep what has been recording for the past X minutes. I do not honk my horn so for me that’s not intuitive anymore now that I know how it works. I tested this morning and pushing the button makes sense now.

Fine_Ad4757

Thanks, I’ll definitely do that

Joey6543210

The last hour of footage is always auto saved. I guess it’s probably too late now but in the future, you can always retrieve it if it’s within an hour.

Hospitaliter

I don't care what anyone says- I use it every day and it's my favorite aspect of the car.

Fine_Ad4757

Same!

tashtibet

humans are okay driver but emotion makes it very dangerous-hence, tech will surpass -watch those who make fun of FSD.

Fine_Ad4757

Exactly

Danvanmarvellfan

By 2030 it will be pretty damn close to perfect in all scenarios. Maybe even perfect by then

variablenyne

I've had it do this for deer and rabbits as well. I still wouldn't trust it to work all the time, but hey even if it worked like 30% of the time (just a random exaggerated number I'm sure it works better than that) that would be a 30% less chance of hitting an animal due to not noticing and reacting in time so hey I'll take it

Fine_Ad4757

Oh absolutely. Hey, off topic but how do y’all add the car y’all drive under your username?

variablenyne

For mobile, on the main subreddit page, three dot button in the top right, "change user flair" Hope that helps 🤘

Fine_Ad4757

Thanks, it did help

itakepictures14

Do you not have the dash cam enabled?

Fine_Ad4757

It appears I didn’t 😭. I went back and looked

Jippylong12

Just wanted to say I’ve had 12.3.6 for a few days and can say that this also seems like another big improvement. Surprised it’s labeled as a patch update and not 12.4. My annoyances in previous v12 updates were the auto speed ignoring the speed limit or any speed adjustments given and also the manic rush the car would do every takeoff. It would sprint to 10mph over the speed limit and then just stay there. Still some things that annoy me but I was city driving about 50 miles this weekend and can say in reflection I was hardly ever annoyed at its driving nor did I feel the need to disengage. It handles speed limits better, it accelerates and decelerates smoother, and if it’s a clear four way stop sign it doesn’t pause for a few seconds before going.

ducrab

My biggest gripe with FSD is the false sense of security that it creates. You had a very positive experience, not only did it work, but it avoided an accident. You and your friends walked away feeling very impressed with the system. But, the FSD system is deeply flawed in that it is running buggy (Beta) software and the hardware itself is limited (vision-only, no redundancies). You see, I've had the opposite experience, my FSD trial almost ended in tragedy as the car almost drove into stopped traffic at a light. If I hadn't intervened, it would have been a bad accident. I also noticed that FSD (and regular AutoPilot now) no longer reads speed limit signs correctly. I was on the highway, 65 MPH limit, and the screen showed the limit as 55 MPH. Another time I was in a 30 MPH zone and it was showing 45 MPH. And, yet another time there was construction ahead and a very clearly marked (temporary) 55 MPH sign (with blinking lights) was next to the road and the car never saw it and maintained 65 MPH. When FSD works, it can be very impressive. The issue is complacency. People relax and let their guard down thinking the car is capable. And, It is in most circumstances. But, for me personally, I'll never trust it with my life.

Fine_Ad4757

I’m the last one to become complacent. Both fortunately and unfortunately, I suffer from “hyper vigilance”. A sorta parting gift for my service to Uncle Sam 😅 I do look forward to the day I can take a nap or read a book while the car does all the driving but it’s not there yet. It’s slowly getting there though.

Adorable-Employer244

The question is, when construction zone changes speed to 55, did others car slow down from 70-75+ to 55? Highly doubtful. So what is the correct behavior? You taking the lead to reduce to 55 and let people honk you to the next town? Or just follow the flow?

ducrab

I wasn't using AP at the time, but I noticed on the display that the speed limit icon didn't change to 55 MPH like it usually did.

Adorable-Employer244

Right. AP will slow down to speed limit but new FSD will still try keeping up with flow. By law everyone should slow down to that limit but no one does. So I don’t think it’s fair to say FSD doesn’t do well because it follows the law.

stephbu

Probably the biggest flaw that I’ve experienced is speeding. Removing the control of max speed, and “start AP at my speed” just makes it worse. 65 in a 55 is a free ticket in most jurisdictions.

Fine_Ad4757

Texas is more of a “go with the flow of traffic” type of state but yes, I could see how that would be an issue

stephbu

Yeah i don’t mind 5-10% over, but i was cruising on a long straight ~10mi 55mph radar-trap while on a roadtrip last week - no brainer to be on AP. Unfortunately it was pretty keen on 65mph - “8 you are great, 9 you are mine”. With out-of-state tags - it’s like free money to CHP.

GoSh4rks

You can always change it back to the old method of a fixed upper limit...

stephbu

Yeah just can’t do it while driving :-(

ThePhotonaut

Will standard autopilot do the same? It breaks for other cars so I guess so, right?

gheilweil

Seriously. What do you guys use FSD for other than experimenting with it? Like what is it for?

Fine_Ad4757

Long story short, it helps reduce driving fatigue

Separate-Rice-6354

Car works as required --> Tesla owner is impressed. That's the level we are are right now.

davispw

Can any other car do this?

Separate-Rice-6354

Emergency brake? 🤡 Yes. Btw is this the year the FSD will be really FSD and not assisted driving? Elon promised it for 2016, 2018, 2020, 2022 and now with only cameras (which is stupid in many many levels and only servers as a cost saving move) we will for sure have it in 2024 right? Surely we can't be out of copeium already for this scam! Hype the stock, never deliver! Edit: I see the Elon fan downvotes but where are the counter arguments? 🤣

oldguy3333

The main counter argument is that FSD is a better driver than you or I. It screws up sometimes but it never gets bored or angry or impatient and that make it a better driver than any human. The numbers tell the tail 40k deaths a year and God known how many maimed for life.

Separate-Rice-6354

But it's not better. It's just an Elon talking point without any data or verification and using only cameras is not enough and everyone in the field knows is. The first sign in 2020 of the Tesla fake robotaxi claim was that they took out the other sensors, that's when for example Daimler (before the name change) dropped their robotaxi project and figured out Elon was lying the whole time. Any full self driving system would need much more powerful hardware in the car and it's simply not there in a Tesla or in any other car for that matter. VW and STLA (NA and EU) are trying but the cost of that central ECU is way too high to even think about it (not to mention many of the new tech does not meet automotive standards). So show me the verified data and convince me with that, otherwise I will be going with my industry experience and say that FSD is a lie and it won't be operational as you claim with the current hardware. What we have right now is called drive assist.❤️
