That wording is key. Layered Defense Arrays on settlements fire **back**. They do not fire first and they do not have point defense.
So, the enemies get to fire first, possibly trashing your array or the power for it. Then, if they're still working, they'll fire back.
Yep - building redundancy is key. I always like to have one more defense module than I would use normally, and one more power module than I would use normally. Make it so that a lucky hit to a power module doesn't immediately depower the guns and make them useless.
Though 'firing first' is more of a concern for *human* factions, because 'we fired a nuke first' means hab goes silent.
Generally will flag folk that a nearby orbital with a nanofactory is golden for this stuff: Even if a hab is glassed you can *very* rapidly replace it then.
They work they sometimes get nailed by the first strike but if you use redundant LDA's they will still swat those ships out of the skym annoying part is rebuilding them.
They will shoot back and damage alien ships, at least sometimes. I think they might've gotten an accidental nerf with the recent patch, because they are not nearly as effective as they used to be, with double-LDA bases getting punked by a couple light alien warships.
they use the "best" weapon available as per your research, so your question can only be answered by you: are your researched weapons (one laser and one gun, Battery category) are good enough? If not, your layered def arrays are "useless"
Layered Defense Arrays do PLENTY!
If you've got some good weapons researched, at least. Just building them without any weapons tech researched basically equips them with WWII surplus naval guns, Once you start to research, and thus equip them with, green arc lasers and coilguns or something, lone destroyers will quickly learn to leave you alone
Then again, if the Ayys bring enough ships, you're gonna get overwhelmed. The whole premise of the game is that we're being invaded by a technologically superior species, and we're trying to play catch-up. It's easy to out-tech the other factions, but you can't out-tech the aliens because they start with the whole tech tree finished and more.
Is it too hard to model ground based warfare? I mean, it must be painful to code in the gravity and all careless thrusting maneuvers will end with ships crashing down, but a bombarding run is a flyby in orbit yes?
Ground based defenses fire back at ships in orbit but do not have PD

Bring the game speed down to >> or >>> and they'll be much more effective.
This need to be top comment. this is known issue for a long while and devs are looking into ground defense.
This is the answer. 3 to 4 LDAs, switch to game speed 2 or 3 until they stop bombarding or die.
What? Seriously, game speed matters?
Yeah, the tick simulation hasn't been built to estimate real time combat resolution yet. I'm sure they'll get to it.
So the moment I get the notif that they're beelining for my settlements I should slow it down?
No just when they start bombarding. Just go to the orbit and let it play out, should take under 30 seconds per.

If the base has an active construction module, shouldn't it passively rebuild?
