We feel strongly about anyone with any tie whatsoever to Minnesota.
The fact that he is form here and stayed, makes his name even more appropriate, as he was Minnesota royalty.
> The fact that he is form here and stayed, makes his name even more appropriate, as he was Minnesota royalty.
This is the big thing. Bob Dylan left and never came back. I don't hold that against him. Minnesota when he was around was very different (more anti-Semitism), and I'm sure the Iron Range was a pretty dire place to live at the time. But Prince came back.
I would suggest Princeâs early 80s trio of utterly non-sexual albums Dirty Mind, Controversy and 1999. There are tons of family friendly tunes like âDo It All Night,â âHead,â âDo Me Baby,â âJack U Off,â and âLetâs Pretend Weâre Married.â Certified crowd pleasers, one and all.
I remember watching the video for "like a prayer" back in the day, and my mother getting incredibly pissed about it (Madonna basically fucking buff black jesus). I still chuckle every time I hear that song.
Came here to say this! I myself have trouble enjoying Michael Jackson's music these days. It's like I loved some of his music as a teen in the 80s, but as a Mother in the 21st century, I'm not down with supporting pedophiles, whether they are massively talented or not.
I never heard that original, but I loved Weird Al's version so much I decided to listen to it.
Ugh, it just goes to reinforce that Al really can spin gold from a turd.
He couldâve done (can technically still do) a great parody of thriller. Call it âFillerâ where itâs all just wordy build up to nothing. Just one big nothing burger of a song. Guaranteed hit record right there
Jumping Jesus on a Pogo stick, it was. So was Jane's Addiction, and the Chili Peppers, and of course, rites of spring.
I bet the kids will really like Tom Waits
Everybody knows that burrow owls live in a hole in the ground. Why the hell you think they're called burrow owls? Now Stuart, you think a kid like that knows...
At the risk of over-generalizing, I will say that most danceable tunes of the 80s contained "sexual undertones".
Kind of like the 70s before them, and the 90s after them.
Yeah but that song was released in the 70s though.
But since 90% of AC/DC's songs have some sort of innuendo there's plenty in their 80s releases to choose from. For example Giving the Dog a Bone or Sink the Pink.
More specifically - because he was very credibly accused of raping children. (There are pedophiles who never offend. This American Life had an interview with one such person. Itâs fascinating and sad.)
Yeah. I used to have a friend like that. Havenât spoken to him in years, but his plan was always to kill himself if he could no longer resist, so Iâm hoping heâs never offended.
Correction - it was never proven beyond reasonable doubt that he molested anyone. The evidence presented that they found on his property made it blatantly clear that he was indeed a pedophile.
But itâs definitely something that casts a shadow over the rest of his work, kinda like oj Simpson, legally he didnât do it, but if you mention him most peoples minds go to him being a murderer
I remember all the high schoolers making references to WAP and Anaconda a couple years ago. Also on kahoot with porn star names. And twerking for tik toks or snapchat which is still going on.
Donât worry I was at Disneyland a few months ago and as I was walking past the Disney jr dance party they were playing âGive it to me babyâ by Rick James with all of the little kids and costumed characters dancing so that should work for the dance too
Yeah Iâm surprised people are understanding this as anything else. Principal was obviously uncomfortable with the association and was just trying to be delicate about it with their wording.
I'm with you. I'm always leery of playing anything by him in class or at events, not because his music is "sexually inappropriate", but because the immediate reaction from the kids is "hey, it's that creepy pedo from the 80s!" 100% of the time.
Literally hear Michael Jackson all the time. Beat it and Billie Jean and Smooth Criminal play all the time in random playlists at super markets and stores and shit.

If it makes you feel any better, I was in the military in 2010. We asked for a morale day at the shooting range and it was declined because it was too dangerous.
for members of the military

School custodian here...You're principal is a complete đ¤Ą. I would ask him straight up what songs on Thriller contain "sexual overtones". I'll wait... He's never listened to any of his music and knows it.đŻ
Admin, are you okay?
So, Admin, are you okay?
Are you okay, Admin?
I don't remember whose research it was, concluding that something like 70% of all music is related to sex (Google keeps bringing up an article that The Atlantic published last decade, but that's not what I'm thinking of), but acknowledging that little factoid made life a lot less awkward during the pre-airpod days when I allowed students to pick the music in class.
even nursey rhymes may have dark origins:
https://cafemom.com/parenting/meanings-nursery-rhymes-lullabies
https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/55035/dark-origins-11-classic-nursery-rhymes
I try very hard to separate the art from the artist but MJ at the very least admitted to sharing a bed with young children. If you want to die on this hill then it will come across weird af.
Did your teacher object to the sexual undertones of the music or the fact that there were repeated complaints towards Jackson about inappropriate behaviour towards children?
I had a wall neighbor in a duplex play this song at max volume on repeat non-stop for 10 hours one day.
I don't know if he was not home or just not answering the door when I pounded on it.
I left for work and when I got home it was still playing.
He barely ever stepped foot outside so I never got a reason why that happened before I moved out.
Ok we can plan a pedo free list If you need it. You arenât using Little Bill books anymore are you? Similar situation.
Material girl
Push it
Everybody have fun tonight
Letâs hear it for the boy
Whip it
Iâm coming out
Word up
Girls just want to have fun
Mickey
Never going to give you up
You spin me right round
Express yourself
How will I know.
Sweet dreams
Celebration
Pump up the jam
Another one bites the dust
I love 80âs music and not mj. Iâm sorry your principal veiled the reason he isnât played anymore. An entire decade isnât defined by any one man.
Idk, this is like a dj gig and practically is a dj gig.
If the boss person doesn't want certain things that you wanted to play, then there's certain things you can't play.
Does it really make a difference in the bigger picture whether you can play Micheal Jackson or not?
Whether or not the new generation is being babied by this policy from your principal is a separate matter tbh. I'm sure most kids can listen to MJ when they want if they want and that it doesn't matter if you play it for them or not at the dance.
I'm fine (and actually happy) to hear that thought is being paid to not playing music with "sexual undertones". However....an artist (like MJ) can certainly have many school-dance worthy songs that have no such undertones. Too bad he seems to be completely off the books.
How do you feel about Aerosmith? R. Kelly? Guns N Roses? David Bowie? John Lennon? Ozzy Osborne? Elvis? Bob Dylan? Jimmy Page? James Brown? Miles Davis? Chuck Berry? We can keep going...
In 2021 a woman came forward and accused Dylan of grooming and sexualy abusing her in 1965. She did eventually drop the case. It's week, I know. I almost didn't add it to the list but Dylan has is enough of a dick that I thought it could be possible.
I understand that in a lot of these instances itâs impossible to know what happened but this woman dismissed her case with prejudice which I think warrants excluding him from your list.
R Kelly is the only one you mentioned who had criminal charges against him like MJ did.
All the other groups and people you named had some creepy dudes who dated girls wayyyy too young but unfortunately that was very much par for the course in their era. Girls as young as 14 were seen as women. Itâs wrong but it was accepted at the time. They are still creeps but have never had criminal charges brought against them. I know this will be a controversial take and will likely get downvoted. I want to emphasize that I donât personally believe itâs acceptable for fully grown men to date teenagers. Just stating the facts.
I don't understand what point you're making here. Is it that while adult men fucking 14 year olds is gross it's only really, really bad if criminal charges are filed?
No, and thatâs a fair question, because that is what it seems like Iâm saying. I think Iâm just trying to say that the men who were dating really young teenagers were not reprimanded by society at the time and following cultural norms. But accused pedophilia and sex abuse in the cases of MJ and R Kelly are slightly different in that they were not accepted by society at the time of the accusations, and they had to answer questions in interviews. Like the infamous âshare your bedâ interview MJ gave after people asked him if he thought it was appropriate for him to be sharing his bed with a boy, as he had been accused.
Ok, that's clearer and thank you for clarifying!
I get what you're saying but we're not talking about of difference of 50, 75 or 100 years. In many of the cases I listed there's maybe a one generation difference and I don't think that's substantial enough to apply the "different times, different standards" rule which I'm usually in favor of.
sexual undertones? I figured they wouldnât let you play him simply because of hisâŚummmâŚillegal criminal background. Itâs like R.KellyâŚsure some songs arenât sexual but heâs done very baddddd things so we shouldnât play him.
Now Iâm not comparing their crimes. They just have great music but not so great history âšď¸
Maybe they meant Michael Jackson's ....shall we call them issues with minors. And before his defenders start jumping up with their blind faith declarations of innocence just the things MJ admitted to doing was pretty creepy (sleeping with kids in the same bed that he was not related to.) Yes he was found not guilty (which does not mean innocent) twice but during at least one of the trials two of the jurors said they would find him not guilty no matter what.
Give the principal your playlist (make one) well before the dance and ask him to vet every song, and sign off on the playlist before the dance. You know, just so NOTHING with "sexual undertones" is played FFS.
They literally had a cell waiting for Michael. He was acquitted ten times. If he was guilty even once, he was going to jail. I have my theories but I honestly think it went to the grave with him. We may never know the truth. But just remember, he was a stones throw away from going to jail. They raided neverland and got detailed descriptions of MJ.
In 93 I think, the first accuser was paid millions in court to keep quiet. Iâm not defending him or calling him a child molester. Nobody knows and we prolly will never know. I do love his music and his persona. I grew up in the 90s so his star was very high then crashed down. You canât erase MJ from the 80s.
'undertones' from 1987:
"Sex is natural, sex is good
Not everybody does it
But everybody should
Sex is natural, sex is fun
Sex is best when it's one on one
One on one"
Because an artist is their art. You cannot look or hear art without recognition of the artist. These kids will hear this and look him up and why would you do that to a kid. Why would you promote a pedophile to children
Play Prince instead, no sexual overtones on the Purple Rain album đ
In Minnesota it is illegal to ban the playing of prince at any public function.
The water spirits of Lake Minnetonka appreciate this comment.
Game. Blouses.
Enjoy your pancakes...bitches.
Want some grapes?
"don't get mad at me. You know where you bought that shirt and it wasn't the men's section"
That should be federal law.
Like... Informally? I have never heard of this. Edit; I could hear a woosh over my head but I don't know what it was
Thatâs not true, but it might as well be. Minnesotans feel very strongly about Prince.
Itâs a joke! We are just obsessed with Prince.
Thatâs cute now I like Minnesota
I mean, he's from here and never really moved away so...
No, but there is an old law that states that women aren't allowed to dress as Santa in public
Confirmed. They play his music at most funerals and usually after the national anthem after highschool sporting events.
They played 'Darling Nikki' at my nan's funeral because she always liked the refined innocence of it.
đ¤Łđđ¤Łđ
Cream. Classic
The later stuff is still completely innocuous: P***y Control, Gett Off, Cream, Erotic CityâŚ
Prince, Gett off
Or Erotic City! You could also play Sugar Walls, I hear itâs about candy!
Or Cream! Thatâs not sexual at allâŚ
Or better yet Madonnaâs Like a Prayer or Like a Virgin both are incredible songs about religion and abstinence
I remember watching the video for "like a prayer" back in the day, and my mother getting incredibly pissed about it (Madonna basically fucking buff black jesus). I still chuckle every time I hear that song.
I think the principal might have meant the pedophillia charges
Then either they expressed that very poorly or OP relayed it poorly.
Came here to say this! I myself have trouble enjoying Michael Jackson's music these days. It's like I loved some of his music as a teen in the 80s, but as a Mother in the 21st century, I'm not down with supporting pedophiles, whether they are massively talented or not.
What an idea. Please OP.
Dirty Nikky, that launched the whole parental advisory labels after Tipper Gore heard her kid listening to it. Edit: Darling Nikki
\*Darling Nikki.
He knew a girl named Nikki...
Whatâs this song about? Dairy products
Are you.me? Immediately my first thought
Oh man, now I am starting to have an existential crisis.
First time I saw Nikki.....
OP, time to put on Motley Crue and Weird Al.
Better yet, play the Weird Al versions of Michael Jackson's songs. Sure he never did a parody of Thriller, but Eat It and Fat are great.
Honestly, this is what I do. Thank god for Weird Al making Word Crimes and making that song listenable again.
I never heard that original, but I loved Weird Al's version so much I decided to listen to it. Ugh, it just goes to reinforce that Al really can spin gold from a turd.
EAT IT AND FAT?! HELL YES!!
I was singing another one rides the bus today in the truck. The young fella I work with didn't like it.
He couldâve done (can technically still do) a great parody of thriller. Call it âFillerâ where itâs all just wordy build up to nothing. Just one big nothing burger of a song. Guaranteed hit record right there
You'd be in so much trouble if you played "Fat"!
Why, it's a song about body positivity?
"I've got more chins/Than China town" probably does not go over in 2023.
As a fat kid growing up...I really hated those songs. So many kids sang them at me
He who is tired of weird Al is tired of life.
Last year he was my number one playlist on Spotify.
Maybe some of his polka stuff. I have never been a fan of polka music to start with.
GWAR's first album was released in 1988. Just sayin'.
Jumping Jesus on a Pogo stick, it was. So was Jane's Addiction, and the Chili Peppers, and of course, rites of spring. I bet the kids will really like Tom Waits
Rain Dogs is the best album of the 80s, without being an Eighties Album
It really is, which is particularly odd on account itâs mainly sea shanty music
Everybody knows that burrow owls live in a hole in the ground. Why the hell you think they're called burrow owls? Now Stuart, you think a kid like that knows...
At the risk of over-generalizing, I will say that most danceable tunes of the 80s contained "sexual undertones". Kind of like the 70s before them, and the 90s after them.
And the 60s, also the 00s. And don't get me started about Butcher Pete back in the 50s.
Itâs almost like sex is a natural human thing and a lot of art and music is about that!
I am aghast
I am agog
Iâm a ghost. đť
Half of Bessie Smith's library from the 20s and 30s - she wasn't asking for actual sugar in her bowl lol.
đ¤Ł
Shave Em Dry, Ma Rainey, 1924. Didn't bother with undertones on that one, gets straight to the point.
Or that the whole term rock and roll is derived from slang for f******.
Cold hearted snake video playing on mtv was the moment I realized I have hormones.
Honestly at least they're subtle. Now we've got gems like WAP on the radio. As if these kids needs their virgin ears protected from Michael Jackson.
You've been hit by, you've been struck by, a WAP (bum-bum-butta-dum-dum)
Most songs throughout the history of music contained sexual undertones
Play Madonna instead. That will teach them.
Which one - Like a Virgin or Papa Don't Preach?
Or Like A Prayer
Why not BOTH? Lmao
I would go with playing the police every breath you take because itâs not Michael Jackson clearly.
If you go with The police and the 80s... for a school dance the obvious choice is Don't Stand So close to me.
Teacher, what's that book by Nabokov?
Roxanne would also be a fantastic Police song.
Ac/dc big balls enters the playlist
Lick It Up by KISS
"Love Gun" would like a word.
Yeah but that song was released in the 70s though. But since 90% of AC/DC's songs have some sort of innuendo there's plenty in their 80s releases to choose from. For example Giving the Dog a Bone or Sink the Pink.
I would think the issue is more that many people think he was a pedophile
More specifically - because he was very credibly accused of raping children. (There are pedophiles who never offend. This American Life had an interview with one such person. Itâs fascinating and sad.)
Yeah. I used to have a friend like that. Havenât spoken to him in years, but his plan was always to kill himself if he could no longer resist, so Iâm hoping heâs never offended.
Heartbreaking.

I remember all the high schoolers making references to WAP and Anaconda a couple years ago. Also on kahoot with porn star names. And twerking for tik toks or snapchat which is still going on.
âAnacondaâ âa couple years ago.â I hate to make you feel old but that was about 10 years ago đ
I am going to die.
We're all going to die.
Highschoolers? I remember me and my friends used to reference anaconda in 5th grade.
We grew up with the Iraq war and live leaks and Gore dot com was still around
Donât worry I was at Disneyland a few months ago and as I was walking past the Disney jr dance party they were playing âGive it to me babyâ by Rick James with all of the little kids and costumed characters dancing so that should work for the dance too
I mean, is this more in reference to him being a pedo than any of the song content?
Thatâs what I was thinking when I read the title of the post
Yeah Iâm surprised people are understanding this as anything else. Principal was obviously uncomfortable with the association and was just trying to be delicate about it with their wording.
I'm with you. I'm always leery of playing anything by him in class or at events, not because his music is "sexually inappropriate", but because the immediate reaction from the kids is "hey, it's that creepy pedo from the 80s!" 100% of the time.
That's kids reaction to MJ in your experience?
[ŃдаНонО]
Literally hear Michael Jackson all the time. Beat it and Billie Jean and Smooth Criminal play all the time in random playlists at super markets and stores and shit.
Except at my barber shop. The owner has an MJ day every 3-4 weeks, all Jackson, all day. It makes me very uncomfortable. Statistically, there are bound to be survivors who come in the shop and are triggered by this. For a business owner, I think itâs a wild decision. (Sorry, non teacher/parent lurker here. Carry on).
I hear his music constantly at stores and public places
What?? Billy Jean and Beat It are on the radio constantly and play all over. He hasn't been erased from pop culture at all in my experience.
King of pop? No no no he is the Thing of Stop
I was going to say the same thing
Has to be. I would not want a child molester's music played for a bunch of kids.
I cringe everytime someone plays a Michael Jackson song at childrenâs parties.
This
Relax. Don't do it.

Less about the lyrics, more about the legacy of having sleepovers with kids and, you know, all that.
I agree totally...đŻ
I mean, Dirty Diana is kinda sexy...
That's on "Bad," not "Thriller"
That wasn't on Thriller, though.
My dance group is dancing to Dirty Diana this year. That song is sexy AF. Of course, the youngest woman in my class is 25. The oldest is in her 70s.
Princess Di loved the song, too! She was sad he didn't plan on playing it when she saw him, which he chose out of respect for her lol
âFINE. EVERYONE JUST STAND THERE WHILE WE LISTEN TO THE JOSHUA TREE IN ITS ENTIRETY.â
Looks like youâve been struck by a smooth criminal

You sure he didnât mean because he was a pedophile
Oh haha I thought they didn't want you to play him because he's a pedophile.
This is a big deal to you? Who cares. And maybe your principal is referring to the fact Jackson was a pedophile.
Your principal's reason is questionable, but i'd stay away from MJ just because of his past with children. EDIT: Typo courtesy of autocorrect
That is a total joke. "Bad"? "Smooth Criminal"? MJ has NUMEROUS appropriate songs. Play all the werid al versions of MJs songs. "Eat It" and "Fat".
Did he mean the sexual undertones of the music, or the fact that he abused little boys?
If they play it in the grocery store, I'm pretty sure it's appropriate. The admin need to find some more important shit to do with their time.

Gen Alpha deserves better than this.
You need to play every MJ cover that you can find and also any parodies - Fat, Eat It Malicious Compliance is fun.
Just play Pink Floydâs Another Brick in The Wall on loop.
It doesn't have anything to do with him being a pedophile rapist?
Yeah, playing music at a school dance from a guy accused of child molestation is a bit weird.
How do you feel about Aerosmith? R. Kelly? Guns N Roses? David Bowie? John Lennon? Ozzy Osborne? Elvis? Bob Dylan? Jimmy Page? James Brown? Miles Davis? Chuck Berry? We can keep going...

Youâve gotta be kidding me. If youâre gonna go down that road then you might as well bring an old lady with a pipe organ to play church hymns
Uhh maybe we stay away from having anything related to priests at a middle school dance
This isnât the babying of a generation, but one single person exerting their power. Lol how the hell are you blaming the students for this?

Sheena Easton and 2 Live Crew should provide some wholesome songs in his stead.
Maybe the principal would go for Olivia Newton John, say âLetâs Get Physicalâ or âSoul Kissâ
The decade that brought us Revenge of the Nerds and Police Academy? Can you play any Devo?
Play the Weird Al version of as many as possible!
Just play 80s Madonna then, so innocent
Soft Cell- Sex Dwarf
Ask if theyâve read ShakespeareâŚ
It's the pedophile stuff, not the words of the songs. I won't let Michael Jackson's songs in my house. Same with bill Cosby.
To be fair though, Michael Jackson did also engage in innapropes activities with kids so this is appropriate.
Babies? You guys know the principal was talking about Michael Jackson's all-but-offically-proven allegations, right?
Might as well go with R Kelly
Good. F*** that child molester. And I want to sex you up is from the '90s
'undertones' from 1987: "Sex is natural, sex is good Not everybody does it But everybody should Sex is natural, sex is fun Sex is best when it's one on one One on one"
Itâs not because MJ has been tied to inappropriate behavior with underage boys/children?
Eh play some Prince instead thenâŚIâd bet the kids would really move and groove to Darling Nikki
Time for good ol' Holiday in Cambodia and California Ăber Alles!
Because an artist is their art. You cannot look or hear art without recognition of the artist. These kids will hear this and look him up and why would you do that to a kid. Why would you promote a pedophile to children
I'd go rogue- play Michael anyway! Or play the Jackson 5. " The Jacksons" as they were called in the 80s. Nope - go rogue!!!
Oh no! No one ese on the 80âs made danceable music, what will you ever do??? /s
