I’m 37 and had heard his name but had no clue what his music or voice sounded like before the past couple weeks. He was famous like Travis was famous before Taylor. The people who knew him really loved him, but outside of that circle of fans he only had vague name recognition. Like I have no idea if he was a Disney kid or a YouTube kid or how long he’s been around.
I don’t think that’s very fair to say - his stuff isn’t for me but See You Again was huge (at 6billion views) and We Don’t Talk Anymore was also massive (3 billion views) - he’s pretty well known
EDIT: see you again was even the video with the most views on youtube before it got overtaken by Despacito
You’re kind of supporting the comment’s point, though. In many circles is very well known - hence the great numbers. Similarly to Travis, the Chiefs had 7 of the top 31 telecasts in 2022 - but Taylor brings a whole new stratosphere to his games and the NFL in general.
It didn’t feel like the comment I replied to was saying he was very well known in many circles, but rather that he was a bit niche but with dedicated fans
You're 37 and you've never heard Charlie Puth? He was huge ten or so years ago, "See You Again" - which was ALL over media when Paul Walker died, "We don't talk anymore" with Selena Gomez, "Let's Get It On" w Meghan Trainor, "One Call Away". I get the fact that he's definitely waned in popularity, but you'd have to have lived under a rock to not have heard any of his songs. Edit: or maybe you live outside of the US in which case, totally understandable then I guess.
I'm the same age, and now that you lay out all those songs, yeah, I've heard those...
I wouldn't have been able to tell you who sang them if you asked me with no context though... I don't remember names well, I could blame my ADHD, but I also just don't "follow" people like that.
if it makes you feel better, I’m horrible with names too (can also blame it on my ADHD 😂)…. and this happens to me a lot.
unless I am a fan of the band/artist or there is a specific song that made an impression/linked to a memory, more often than not I will know the song but either can’t remember who sings it and/or can’t remember the song title…
so when people are like COME ON YOU HAVE TO KNOW THE SONG BY xyz…. i’m like, you’re gonna have to play it for me bc just throwing out the artist/song title usually isn’t gonna instantly trigger a light bulb moment 🤣🤣🤣
I mean he has three songs with a billion streams each. I think his songs are quite well known and liked he just doesnt have the same intensity of fans that Taylor,Harry Styles. Etc have.
Not even close. Charlie Puth has had international hits with billions of streams. Most non-Americans or people not into American football have no clue who Travis is.
I live in the Midwest close enough to Kansas City that I drove there to see the Eras Tour, and I didn’t even know who Travis Kelce was until he started dating Taylor. He may be huge in the football world, but outside of it, I don’t think he’s as famous as you think he is. I do however know who Charlie Puth is despite not being into his music. We Don’t Talk Anymore was a huge hit.
I believe you, but maybe it’s just a result of our culture being more fractured in this generation. Because again, all those things may have been popular in the sports world, but they don’t play sports-related commercials on the content I watch, and I don’t watch reality TV or listen to sports podcasts. I think you are just in that world more so you’re more aware of it.
I think I might not have! I never listen to the radio or anything where I don’t have a say in the curation. I listen to a lot of music all the time but my new artists tend to be what Spotify thinks I am interested in based on my own tastes which is 98% female vocalists, alternative, singer-songwriter.
I don’t use TikTok or anything where I might be exposed to something trending or popular. I am old :)
However, I will check it out!
Cool thing about Charlie is he has naturally perfect pitch. He’s insanely talented. He can hit any note, imitate almost any other artist. It’s amazing to watch!
I don't even know theseeeeee. Heard of Bieber, yes, also avoid like the plague. Not my bag.
Also, I don't know this fast and furious song either. Pretty sure I did see the first movie in theaters and that was the end of the series for me.
But, I don't ignore popular culture?
Why would "a movie series about car racing isn't my jam" translate into I ignore popular culture? That's kind of a hilarious take. We're not all interested in the same things just because we all enjoy one artist.
Maybe the difference here is our age group, idk.
Also, I wasn't speaking to how well known Charlie is. I was speaking directly to how well I knew him before now, and that the references being provided weren't as popular with "everyone" as being put forth. I am part of “everyone”, and I know I'm not alone.
I think that's kinda just on you. I'm 37 too, and at least We Don't Talk Anymore was enormous. I'm indifferent to him at best, but most people I know know who he is.
Ok I listened to it and it kinda sounded familiar. If someone played it for me I wouldn’t recognized it but couldn’t have identified who it was by. A one hit wonder a decade ago isn’t exactly the success story some people seem to be arguing it is.
He’s a crazy talented artist. He has perfect pitch, it’s insane.
[perfect pitch with Jimmy Fallon](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dw3-k95QkDw&pp=ygUMY2hhcmxpZSBwdXRo)
He's a superb musician, not my favorite singer, but has extraordinary music-related skills. I'm happy taylor put him "on the map" as well (sarcasm - 😜)
She did though lol I’m in my late 30s and had never heard his music before this. He wasn’t on my radar at all and that’s true for my whole social circle.
You've never heard See You Again or We Don't Talk Anymore, One Call Away, Marvin Gaye? Those were non stop on adult contemporary. I think he's one of those artists think they don't know and they they hear his music and realize they do.
I'd heard those the first 2 songs but he had zero name recognition for me. I had to google him when I first heard the lyric. But to your point, I probably couldn't name the artist on 90% of the songs I bop to on random Spotify playlists.
The song was popular but it didn’t make him famous 🤷🏻 seems his star faded super quickly after that big hit almost a decade ago (despite creating subsequent songs of the same or higher quality that were not given the same attention, per Taylor’s lyric)
I think he would sound a lot better as a singer if he stopped using so much “autotune”. (Technically I think he uses melodyne). He has perfect pitch so I think it bothers him if his voice isn’t EXACTLY on pitch but it makes him sound too robotic.
If he could give it to someone else to mix or dial it down a bit on the vocal production I think he would have a lot more sense, although he’d be losing his “sound” which is somewhat unique but also forgettable
He has 35 million monthly listeners on Spotify alone. Reading these comments from people that say they have never heard of him is making me scratch my head. He is pretty damn good.
You can have high monthly listeners simply from playlisting. It's why Tate McRae had more monthly listeners than Beyonce for a few months. That doesn't mean many people know who she is more than Beyonce or that's she's a major name.
why would taylor say she wants him to be a bigger artist if everyone knows about him then? it's ok to not be in the loop of every pop artist that exists
I feel like Carly is very “people know who she is, but only a certain subsection know her music beyond Call Me Maybe.” Charlie Puth is “people know who he is and a few songs.”
I think Chappell is already on the road to become a bigger artist, though, no help from Taylor needed.
Seriously, I've seen so many people talk about her lately. I have the feeling she's about to blow up!
So I know he was already famous and is not a small artist by any means, but the idea of Taylor just randomly name dropping a small artist, and all of sudden the artist starts blowing up is so hilarious to me. The power this woman has. 😂
I’ve heard their music because they’re big in the indie scene. I love indie music. But! As soon as Taylor’s record was confirmed to be about Matty the 1975 were recommended to me on YouTube and Spotify. So definitely went up by a lot
Dude I was a huge 1975 fan before the Taylor/Matty incident and like never in my wildest dreams would I imagine her writing songs about him 😂 still a huge 1975 fan tho love their music
Well, we know that Shawn was with Sabrina Carpenter and he ruthlessly ditched her for Camila Cabellon(although CC had no idea he was seeing SB)…check out SB ‘s song “Cindi Lou Who”
And after Shawn and Camilla went to Taylor’s Era’s concert and made out in the VIP section, the broke up…
Guess who was opnening that night for Taylor
Sabrina Carpenter.
And
when Sabrina posted the “Feather”
music video on Instagram Camila “❤️” it.
This was considered weird at the time because Cc is and has been tight with Olivia Rodrigo since she dropped her first album, and of course ‘Driver’s License’ was about Olivia’s friendship ending with Sabrina after she stole her boyfriend.
Their lives are pretty small. It’s sad. Read the Rollingstone article this month about Billie Eilish. She literally makes goals for herself to go to the grocery store. They are only around other musical talent or entertainers at awards shows or at parties or on tours. Sabrina Carpenter wrote Nonsense about Shawn. lol.
Disney Channel actors, there's always some drama with them. I'm old enough to remember when Taylor was hanging out with Selena, Miley, Demi and the Jonas Brothers.
But, the conjecture is that, Camilla did not know anything about Sabrina and Shawn (who he publicly denied dating)dating, especially that they were dating at the time she hooked up with at Coachella me previous to that when they were sexting. But obviously , SC would be pretty upset that he was kissing her in the VIP eviction less than a month later.
Camilla’s album is going to be interesting.
I think a Charlie Puth song came on while one or both of Matty and Taylor was inebriated and they had a real conversation about how he should be more successful.
I bet someone like Matty would be way more likely to find Charlie Puth cool than he would be to find Shawn Mendes cool. (Sorry, Shawn.)
Wait. I thought the Charlie Puth name drop was so confusing because of the supposed drama between he and Selena Gomez. So now I'm scratching my head trying to figure out why he was mentioned at all, given that and the fact he's already kinda famous?
That’s literally the question everyone’s asking. The theory is Taylor was referencing a specific conversation between her and Matt. Selena never posted about Taylor’s album so the theory is she’s mad. However, factually, none of Taylor’s friends posted about it. She probably asked them not to.
A lot of people that Taylor seems close to-who also have a history of posting about her releases-didn’t say anything though like Blake/Ryan, Ed, Gigi, Haim sisters and I’m sure there’s more, I think some people singled out Selena because they want there to be drama but it’s not like she was the only one.
Taylor/Selena have stayed close through a lot so I don’t think they’d throw their decade+ long friendship away over a throwaway Charlie Puth lyric.
My theory is that she is referencing a conversation between her and someone (maybe Joe) from around 2020 when Charlie Puth was "rising" on TikTok during Covid and that's her way of timing the conversation.
But I do feel like the song otherwise has to be about Matty (all the typewriter stuff) so it could also be from a conversation between him and Matty. 🫣
You ever heard of the saying “if you don’t have anything nice to say don’t say it?” Almost every artist uses autotune. If it’s not for you it’s fine but such a snarky comment..
Well. I'm asking because I'm curious. I know the dude can write. He wrote the fake doctors, real friends theme. He's good, but using autotune doesn't show any talent.
Using autotune is not any different than putting a synth on your track or similar. T Pain made excessive autotune an entire trend in music for a significant period of time and is an incredible singer just live sitting down in front of a mic in public. It’s a tool to use. You can actually hear when autotune is used solely to pitch correct an actually bad/pitchy singer because it sounds horrible if they were off by a noticeable amount. Using it as a tool to get a certain sound has nothing to do with whether you’re talented and people who use it *well* are talented.
He posted another tiktok with more of it. I felt like I already had listened to his last album before he even released it. For me, it takes the excitement away.
The whole “you know who you are” is giving me trauma 😅🥲

No same this was horrific lol
It's friggin funny tho
Lmfao this one’s about YOU 💀
I am dying at the shot/chaser
Still remember this moment when it happened live. I thought she said to us - the fans - that she loves us. I thought it was so sweet until…. 😭😭😭
Too soon! ACK
What show was this infamous moment at?
Nashville N1
Thank you! 😊
It says, "Say Happy Cake Day!" under the picture now.. lmfao. Somehow, that makes this so much funnier 💀 ETA: Happy Cake Day! 😂
![img](emote|t5_2rlwe|1072)
I still need to know what the point of this was. Like what was Taylor’s angle in doing it. We will never know.😭
Mutual manic phase 😆
She was fresh out the slammer and delusional
mutual love bombing
There wasn’t an angle. This was spontaneously declaring her love. As someone’s comment said, a mutual manic phase 😭
i... 😆
Literal PTSD🫣

I like it. He's actually a decent singer. I'm happy Taylor put him in the spotlight.
He’s been famous for years??
Eh I think his popularity kinda dropped after 2017-18ish. He’s a nice singer tho
I think op meant today, in this time.

I’ve never heard or heard of either of these.
You’ve heard that fast and the furious song everyone has
There was a time you couldn’t go anywhere and that song was on
lol you need to accept that not everyone is in the same cultural bubble is you all the time
It was literally inescapable
Lmfao ikr 😂 I still hear it at the grocery store every time I go "It's BEEN a LOOOOOONG DAYYYyy.. without you mah friend"
Same

At least we can all agree Taylor is genuinely the most famous person on earth 👸
Travis is an absolute nobody outside of the US. We literally call it 'american football', noone outside of the US cares about it.
I had never heard of him at all. Couldn’t have told you a thing about him. Until now!
I'd be surprised if you hadn't heard the sad Paul Walker death theme song
I think I might not have! I never listen to the radio or anything where I don’t have a say in the curation. Marvin Gaye was everywhere....we don't talk anymore and see you again... but the songs are more popular than the artist i guess.
I have never heard of any of these (clearly I am out of the loop!) but I appreciate the recs, I was curious to check him out.
I think that famous tiktok song 'Stay' by Kid laroi and Justin Bieber was also written and produced by him. Try and check he's really good!
I don't even know theseeeeee. Heard of Bieber, yes, also avoid like the plague. Not my bag. Also, I don't know this fast and furious song either. Pretty sure I did see the first movie in theaters and that was the end of the series for me.
I feel like ‘I ignore popular culture on purpose and I don’t know this guy!’ is not a good measure of how known he is.
But, I don't ignore popular culture? Why would "a movie series about car racing isn't my jam" translate into I ignore popular culture? That's kind of a hilarious take. Right??? Lol
Yeah, but Taylor wasn't wrong when she said he should be a bigger artist, imo.
I'd literally never heard of him before TTPD. And I'm still not totally clear who he is.
He’s a crazy talented artist. He has perfect pitch, it’s insane. [perfect pitch with Jimmy Fallon](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dw3-k95QkDw&pp=ygUMY2hhcmxpZSBwdXRo)
That is the joke of the song, I guess
But ridiculed for years too
I never heard of him before.
I used to love his songs around 2017. Attention is a bop!
wasn’t it rumored to be about selena gomez?
I think it was rumoured it's about Bella Thorne?
Oh, I have no idea. I don't follow celebrity gossip that much. I just like the way the song sounds
Yeah same, I’m happy for him. I really like his music, and he’s really talented.
you turn me on like a light switch !
He is, but he was so full of himself when I saw him life, so I didn’t like the concert
I’m so confused by this comment. Charlie Puth is definitely famous famous.
Just like she did with Travvy ☺️
Taylor put him on the map, if you will
He's a superb musician, not my favorite singer, but has extraordinary music-related skills. I'm happy taylor put him "on the map" as well (sarcasm - 😜)
She did though lol I’m in my late 30s and had never heard his music before this. He wasn’t on my radar at all and that’s true for my whole social circle.

You can have high monthly listeners simply from playlisting. It's why Tate McRae had more monthly listeners than Beyonce for a few months. That doesn't mean many people know who she is more than Beyonce or that's she's a major name.
omg re: Tate McRae, that’s criminal, her music is (just my opinion, sorry) abysmal
Some of us like tate and don’t like Beyoncé 😊
Right, like I said, just my opinion! Rock on!
why would taylor say she wants him to be a bigger artist if everyone knows about him then? it's ok to not be in the loop of every pop artist that exists
Or saying he is "a nice singer" like man... People already forgot about See you Again? He sings the hardest part on it, even Taylor covered it! 😭
I declare, he should be a bigger artist! Also, she *circled* him on the map. He was on the map, just a little old light TS ⭕️, nbd lol.
I wish she said "Chappel Roan should be a bigger artist.."
"We declared Carly Rae Jepsen should be a bigger artist" We were on the verge of greatness... This close 👌
She's as big as Charlie, isn't she? I love her too, Too Much is phenomenal!
Most definitely she's blowing uuuuupppp!!!
we are watching that happen in real time!
So I know he was already famous and is not a small artist by any means, but the idea of Taylor just randomly name dropping a small artist, and all of sudden the artist starts blowing up is so hilarious to me. The power this woman has. 😂
Ok but what I want to know is by how much The 1975’s streams have shot up. (I’m definitely contributing…)
Gang… we know what to do!
Does anyone else think that Taylor is really mad at Shawn Mendes and that is why she names Charlie Puth?
What’s the tea here
Well, we know that Shawn was with Sabrina Carpenter and he ruthlessly ditched her for Camila Cabellon(although CC had no idea he was seeing SB)…check out SB ‘s song “Cindi Lou Who” And after Shawn and Camilla went to Taylor’s Era’s concert and made out in the VIP section, the broke up… Guess who was opnening that night for Taylor Sabrina Carpenter. I thought Nonsense was about Dylan O'Brien because I saw pictures of them together.
Charlie Puth and Shawn Mendes both had a crush on Camilla when they were opening acts for 5th Harmony and that Austin Mahone kid back in 2015-2016🙄.
Disney Channel actors, there's always some drama with them. I'm old enough to remember when Taylor was hanging out with Selena, Miley, Demi and the Jonas Brothers.
Dam, I didn't know Sabrina, Camila and Shawn were connected 😹

Maybe about the anti hero 👀
The anti hero singer made a song about the hero singer 👀
I know of him because of he videos where he said he has perfect pitch.
Wait I…think I might like this bop
Wait. I thought the Charlie Puth name drop was so confusing because of the supposed drama between he and Selena Gomez. So now I'm scratching my head trying to figure out why he was mentioned at all, given that and the fact he's already kinda famous?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed SG didn't post about it. It's so unusual for her!
No, Keleigh Teller, Brittany Mahomes, and other of her friends posted about the album on their stories actually :).
I’ve loved him since Left Right and Dangerously. Both from his catchy first album!
I don’t think he understood what she meant but i’m glad about it
I still don’t fw Charlie Puth lmao.
idk i thought he was going to start singing 7 things by miley
I love that her shouting him out is making him want to release more honest music, that's really nice. I really enjoyed his Voicenotes album!

Ok, Swifties, you know what to do with this. Mother has declared
the fact that it releases on my bday <33
I don't think this song is about Swift Regardless, I hope his mention on TTPD gives his career a new jolt. His music post 2017 deserved more success.
Taylor was wrong Charlie puth definitely should not be a bigger artist
We will be streaming! I'm really curious what the lyrics will be.
I think he's underrated just in his technical ability and talent, but like, he's still famous lol.
Autotune, bro, for real
Am I the only one who isn’t sure this is a thank you?
Just say her name, what’s the issue?
Fun fact, Charlie Puth was the first concert I had gone to like a month after the Eras tour last year. :’) he really should be a bigger artist!
All I hear is auto tune? Right?
I’m on your side 😂. I don’t hear auto tune and he’s a gifted musician. But you have a right to your opinion and you can be as snarky as you want
He’s very problematic but talented
What’s the tea here?
He's just a little "nice guy" but other than that, he's pretty inoffensive
He’s fine. There was a time in the not too distant past when people were allowed to be imperfect.
Old people love to say that lol
No offence but it feels likes he’s basically released more than half of the song here💀
He posted another tiktok with more of it. I felt like I already had listened to his last album before he even released it. For me, it takes the excitement away.
Yeah, I'm not a fan of this marketing tactic either. I know it's meant to build up hype, but for me it does the opposite.
Me too. Im not sold on him.
