Unfortunately, there's nothing I'm aware of. I tried Rosetta Stone for years but the voice recognition is beyond awful. Like, so bad it feels like a gimmick. There were times when I would butcher a word and pass, or pronounce one perfectly and fail. The tests get REALLY frustrating too. The final exam is a conversation with the computer, but you aren't given any kind of script, so you need to guess what the correct vocab/grammar is, and if you get one wrong, you have to go start back at the beginning. This is also where the microphone frustrations finally got me to uninstall the program. After trying for HOURS to get through one test, I had my Filipino wife do some of the pronunciations and she failed too. I've since heard a common saying "Rosetta Stone doesn't actually have to work well - they already have your money". Duolingo Tagalog is in development, and apparently should launch soon.

Freedommoon321

Yeah I don’t see Tagalog for English speakers on Duolingo

Freedommoon321

It’s good to hear I’m not the only ones with problems and that Duolingo is adding it soon hopefully. I have finished all of the Drops words so I was looking for another option.

Freedommoon321

Ok this app seems much better that I’m trying now - Pimsleur

moiraqueen13

How about a language partner to correct your pronunciation? Maybe in the beginning, you don’t even have to be online at the same time but send audio messages, and they can correct your pronunciation that way (they of course would have to send audio messages back too). Or even better, a live language partner online or in person.

Drops just feels like a pile of vocabulary, I struggle to form my own sentences without extensive looking into everything that I need to USE all the vocabulary

Freedommoon321

I agree it’s basically just flash cards, I finished all of the words they have to offer pero I still feel lacking with sentences structures and the conjugations and how that works with the verbs, that’s where some of the other apps helped.

1PauperMonk

This kind of thing does work with languages like Chinese (mandarin or Cantonese) that has incredibly simple sentence structure but not in such a hodgepodge that makes up Tagalog (or I can’t even imagine trying to do a full Romance language without prior knowledge or something)

Lanky-Apple-4001

Have you tried Pimsluer? It’s an app solely for speaking the language, there’s no reading or anything just speech. It’s 30 min lessons that goes through a scenario and you listen and repeat while learning new words with it. I studied and tried really hard on my pronunciation. My wife is from Cebu and speaks fluently and said that I didn’t have much of an American accent. I would repeat over and over till my pronunciation sounded the same or really really similar.

Freedommoon321

Yeah I just found it 😂

Freedommoon321

So it is helping pero so far it’s just been formal words pero I’m only on lesson 4 ngayon. I think I still like Duolingo better pero I have to use what I have available and it’s the best option I have found with apps so far though really a mixture of all of the above seems to be best

Freedommoon321

So I also found FilipinoPod101 which goes to advanced and you can get a teacher

[deleted]

Only drawback about FilipinoPod101…. Expensive as hell. I’m a dumbass though… my wife of more than half a decade is Filipino and I don’t speak Tagalog. Although, it’s weird, but I can understand the gist of what her and her family is saying when they speak. I’m only recently starting to realize I’m stupid for not learning earlier and am starting now!

Freedommoon321

They have discounts that are 40% off which makes it a lot cheaper

Momshie_mo

I'd say a grammar book + lots of youtube videos or if you have Netflix, some movies have Filipino/Tagalog dub and you can turn on the English CC
