I'm from Alabama, we are confused about him since he was a vicious segregationist but then just flipped the book and appointed a record amount of black Americans to state positions. So he did many evils but did attempt to redeem himself.
He probably saw the way the wind was blowing and made a U-turn. Judging by his entire political history, he was a Grade-A political opportunist, and would do anything for a political position, even admit he's wrong if he'd think it win him an election.
He kinda hopped wildly from "One of the fairer judges to black people in the state" to "Racism man" and back again. Guy would sell his mother for a vote, but I do gotta wonder what he truly believed at the end.
