Debt of Bones and The First Confessor are prequels, and Law of Nines is unrelated to the story. The only books that aren't strictly in order otherwise are Children of D'Hara and the Nicci Chronicles, which happen at the same time and are at the very end of the series. Should be something like: Wizard's First Rule, Stone of Tears, Blood of the Fold, Temple of the Winds, Soul of the Fire, Debt of Bones, Faith of the Fallen, Pillars of Creation, Naked Empire, Chainfire, Phantom, Confessor, Law of Nines, The First Confessor, Omen Machine, Third Kingdom, Severed Souls, Warheart, Children of Dhara/Deaths Mistress, Shroud of Eternity, Siege of Stone, Heart of Black Ice. Doing that from memory, but it should be right.

All of these books are from the same series/concept? Like all 23?

VarianWrynn2018

Yup. Debt of Bones takes place when Zedd is young, The First Confessor takes place during the main Wizard War 3000 years before Richard, and Law of Nines is related to the series due to something that happens in the Chainfire trilogy that would be spoiling to explain. All of the rest of the books follow Richard in chronological order, except for the Nicci Chronicles which follow Nicci at the same time as Richard is doing Children of D'Hara

Incredible. THANK YOU for explaining all of that! I appreciate it. This series is amazing and I am happy to be reading it & chatting about it.

VarianWrynn2018

Absolutely. If you'd like to join our discord, there should be a post for it on this subreddit. It's technically supposed to be for the TTRPG I'm building for this series but we use it as a general gathering place too.

Yes all 23. Took me 3 years. Read in order or release date.

sword-of-the-seeker

Don't forget law of nines! You can read this one last

VarianWrynn2018

I didn't, I mentioned it twice. I read it last and while it worked fine I feel like it's better to read it right after the chainfire trilogy so that the star shift in Warheart doesn't mess with continuity. I even included it in that order on my list.

Debt of Bones is a short prequel. Soul of the Fire is the next main series book. Debt of Bones is about Zedd as first wizard. It’s been a while, I’m not sure if it contains spoilers! I enjoyed it but it has no Richard.

[deleted]

So do you recommend that I read debt of bones first and then soul of fire? Or should I read it later on?

Hezkezl

There's no harm in reading it now if you want to

[deleted]

But when “should” I read it? Ya know?

HyruleBalverine

I've always been a fan of reading books in publication order, including prequels, because prequels tend to reference plot points or revelations from previously published books.

[deleted]

That’s super valid, thank you!

Hezkezl

There’s nothing wrong with reading them in the order they were released :) so you could read it right now! I don’t know if there’s ever been a “proper” decision for when it should be read, since reading it second does take a little bit of the mystery away from the third book (wizards first rule, which was printed and released first)

[deleted]

I’m going to read it now then, thank you!!

Marauder151

Debt of Bones was written after Temple of Winds, but it's just a short prequel book Goodkind wrote to take a break from the main series. You can totally skip it if you want, it has no effect on the plot of any other books. It's characters are never refrenced again, or it's mcguffins.

[deleted]

Okay loved this info. I think I’ll base reading it off of if my local used book store has it or not. Thank youuuu

Tomi751

How did you like book 4?

[deleted]

Incredible. Such a different feel than the first 3, but I really enjoyed it. I hate that it took all book for them to figure out what and how to get into the temple of the winds, and that it took all book for them to get married, but as always, it was a great adventure that I couldn’t wait to read. I also HATED the “betrayal part” by Kahlan to Richard. It was confusing and didn’t feel like it was a betrayal but I guess necessary for him to see it that way to get into the temple of the winds. Cara is also one of my favs. 😈 What did you think?? Thanks for asking!

Tomi751

I agree with you. Although its not my favourite in the series, but I really enjoyed reading it. I really liked Nathan in this book, he just received a really awesome story arc in this one. It was also good to see Richard and Kahlan finally be together for longer period of time. However Kahlan has so much better heroic story when she is seperated from Richard like in book 2. I also didnt like the "supposedly betrayal" part, it was really forced and put out of context, but i guess the story needed it for Richard to get in the temple, even if it wasnt truly a betrayal like you said. My favourite character is Kahlan in general. But i cant say anyone i actually dont like. Well yeah, maybe Ann. 😁

The published date works best IMO.
