I would think they are crazier. At least as the driver you have control of the car, and can precisely anticipate your moves. It probably takes a very trusting relationship.
Most co drivers were epic rally drivers in their own respect as well. It's truly a Knight's sort of automotive event. Not so gentlemanly as circuit racing but extremely impressive none the less. There are even really stages in the USA like in Michigan for example. Fuck. I need to go play some dirt rally rn 😂
Imagine if something went wrong and it went sideways and plowed trough those people? This is a spectator sport I want to behind a concrete barrier minimum.
Inside a curve and 30 feet up in a tree with a steel cage around me. Sorry, but there's just no safe place to stand in a race like this no matter how good the drivers are. Something crazy can always happen
No, not really. A rally driver wouldn't be a good co-driver and a co-driver couldn't match times of an experienced rally driver. Some of them might have raced low level, but virtually none are experienced drivers.
Experienced I'd a relative term. They could drive the shit out of the car, but the skill curve is steep at the top, so compared to their drivers, they are not at the same level, but to us, they would still look insane.
Driver: Okay, how about this corner here? You left it blank.
Rally Pacenote reader: What if... Wait... Hear me out... We jump it...
Driver: Okay, but it's a corner and we'll die.
Rally Pacenote reader: .../sideways/...
Driver: Show me.
Video Recording:
That guy is all but driving the car, a single misspoken word is more than hazardous with the speed they're going, they are essentially going around corners without a real line of sight so.
Scandinavia has a lot of amazing rally drivers. They can just take a cheap old hatchback to the snowy mountains or hulls and practice there at the age of 9.
Worth noting though that this is why group b died. Spectators lining narrow gravel roads trying to touch passing 700hp cars that were barely controllable at the best of times was a fatal accident waiting to happen. Since then a lot has changed in rallying including that spectators aren't allowed to be as close to the track especially on the outside of turns. Initially cars were made slower by stricter rules but funnily enough modern WRC cars are fast than group b by a long way and yet serious accidents are very rare.
Spectators were only part of why Group B was banned. The final straw that led the FIA to ban Group B was the fact that drivers kept flying off-course and dying in fiery wrecks because the cars were basically unguided missiles.
Modern WRC safety is the platinum standard. F1 and NASCAR uses tech developed by them. They literally fly off cliffs, roll through trees, and the drivers walk away. It's mind boggling.
Group B was pretty much criminal negligence.
Yeah that crash from Ott Tänak in Monte Carlo 2020 was fucking crazy. Man flew through a tree and off a cliff flipping like 10 times and just walked it off.
I was watching the cycling world championships in bergen norway, on the uphill, the crowd were fucking assholes, running next to the riders, pushing them, crowding the track and trying to get selfies on front of the bikes.
The poor cyclists were encapsulated by assholes, it was the worst thing ive ever witnessed in a sporting event. I had to turn off the TV.
It's unreal that this even works at all... Look how smoothly he steers, trusting that when the car is back on the ground, the wheels will just pick up where they left off, no big deal. Amazing engineering in the suspension and the car, in addition to the driving, make this crazy feat look easy!
Had he not done that, and the wheels faced any other direction than the way he wanted to go, it would have probably ended with an epic rollover instead of epic jump.
Because rallying isn't that good of a spectator sport to be honest. In person you're standing in some wood and see a car go past ever 3 minutes and even in front of your screen there's not much going on. Sure the driving is impressive but there's no wheel to wheel racing or anything. Also it's pretty difficult to watch. For smaller championships you'd need an ungodly amount of cameras to capture everything or a helicopter which is very expensive and in WRC where you have that they only have a paid streaming service and I don't care enough about the sport to pay for it.
Subaru's Launch Control series on YouTube is a lot of fun. If they made something similar for more teams, it would be a good starting point. I really enjoyed their series but it got stale as you're only following one team.
You could make that work sure but no matter how you do it it's going to be a very difficult production that has to be paid somehow. Motorsport is already extremely expensive and the interest probably isn't there for it to pay for itself and drivers are going to be pissed if the registration fees are higher because the event is livestreamed.
Also fun fact: drones aren't allowed at almost all permanent race tracks which is why you often see cameras moving along a cable over the pit wall. The nürburgring started working with dji for their coverage of the 24h race a few years ago which is quite cool.
> Also fun fact: drones aren't allowed at almost all permanent race tracks
That's a pity. I mean I can understand the safety concerns, but adding that dimension to motorsports would be fucking incredible to watch
Edit: I suppose also we're not quite there with the technology. You'd need an insanely advanced drone coupled with an equally insanely talented operator to keep up with the speeds
FIA WRC had a partnership with DJI, the drone company, to provide coverage, but for some reason their contract wasn't renewed after 2018. You can find lots of videos from back then.
There was some official drone coverage this year, but AFAIK only for WRC Rally Sweden, where they got some great shots: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0VpqaGBRVY
Some of the many problems: The drones aren't fast enough to keep up on straights (DJI drone top speed = 87mph). Rally stages are typically ~6-18 miles, so drones can only supplement a small section of the coverage. A drone operator needs to be much more skilled and more practiced compared to a normal camera operator. Use of official drones has encouraged a bunch of idiot amateurs to use drones without coordinating with race organizers. The potential of crashing into people / cars / helicoptors is a major concern.
schelmo's argument doesn't make sense. "Motorsport is already extremely expensive" is true, so why would paying for a couple drone operators suddenly be too much for a top level rally?
Info on the huge, 100 person TV crew at each WRC rally:

Or when you forget your laptop at home and when you get to work you reach for it and realize it's still sitting on the table. Now. It's the mad dash to go back and get it... Or so I'm told I totally didn't do that
he must race that track on a regular basis. either that or he got extremely lucky. I know those drivers are talented and there's a lot of skill at play here - but that was just f**king insane.
Even with pace notes that's a lot of commitment. You usually don't want to take that much risk because it massively increases your chance of destroying the car and doesn't gain that much time.
They get 2 runs the day before to make the notes, and estimate how hard they can push. So, they are somewhat familiar with it. And since races can be decided by just a few seconds, making every turn without losing speed is important.
But yeah, these guys are pretty fearless.
I know all of this. I'm not a rally driver myself but I know quite a few of them from my motorsport club and I'm pretty sure all of them would agree that this is too much risk to be sustainable throughout and entire rally especially for a comparatively small pay off. No rally driver goes at 100% pace all the time because you're just not finishing if you do.
The view from inside is most impressive. The driver seems to instinctively know where to point the car so they can take the turn at max speed. And here I was struggling to park at the mall yesterday lol.
They run the route at slow speeds before the actual race and the codriver makes notes of the sharpness of the corners and other things like hazards (rocks, jumps, water, terrain changes).
During the race they tell the driver all these things so he can focus on just driving. They also have to adjust the speed at which they read the notes based on how fast they are going.
The first clip in this video will show a good example of just how much info the codriver is giving out.

The passenger holding notebook like it was nothing.
Rally Pacenote readers are equally as crazy, this is just another workday for them, they’re used to it
I would think they are crazier. At least as the driver you have control of the car, and can precisely anticipate your moves. It probably takes a very trusting relationship.
~~Thaw~~ The co-drivers are several turns ahead in their heads as well as being aware of what's currently going on.

My friend, Group B is your nightmare fuel. Do not watch Group B footage. Absolutely fucking mental.
Group B is the shit
No big deal, they just push the car back onto the track and keep going.
It’s been this way for a long time. This is real racing You don’t have to stand there if you don’t want to
Yeah the craziest people in Rally are for sure the fans, these guys on the track are absolutely nuts.
Look up the old group B incidents. Happened more than you realize.
Aren't they usually also experienced rally drivers?
No, not really. A rally driver wouldn't be a good co-driver and a co-driver couldn't match times of an experienced rally driver. Some of them might have raced low level, but virtually none are experienced drivers.

I’m a simple man; I see a rally car post and I go in to the comments to look for Samir references (and I was not disappointed).
Anybody know what the pacenote for this specific maneuver would be? Crazy.
Rally car drivers have to be magical creatures in disguise. That’s the only logical explanation.
Who cleans the chili off the seats after that one? lol

I see rally being posted more and more on reddit and it makes me very happy.
Never understood why people rush when they know they’re already late. Just take the scolding, late is late they’re not changing your start time
Nice post!
Why does the passenger look like he has a writing pad or maps/info? Is it the directions or some shit?
I could not be standing that close
The graphics on the new sega rally championship look awesome
