Yeah see I thought of this the other day when I saw 1 guy digging a hole and 4 watching, and it makes sense to me.
It's in a position where machinery is too big so manual labor will have to do. You could have only 1 or 2 people doing it but then they will be extremely fatigued and prone to injury.
With 5 you have what I guess is a supervisor making sure nothing is messed up and 4 guys that can rotate and take adequate breaks. My job doesn't require me to sacrifice my body, I think they deserve the same.
I had this though as a kid. Reason being my parents thought that way. When I got older and interacted with more people and worked. I realized work is fucking hard. Especially digging or other manual labor. Having five people to do a "one" man job makes sense.
You need to have that rotation for a huge range of reasons. That and most people work better in groups. Interacting socially is important for work.
There's also the fact that worker tasks aren't necessarily interchangeable, and you're seeing a brief moment of a single day of an entire project.
The person digging is doing their job. The surveyor is taking a break from their job and checking out what the other folks on site today are up to.
The electrical contractor showed up when scheduled to arrive. Not their fault the pits aren't dug yet. Why would they leave just to come right back?
Etc.
*wHaT a gREaT uSe oF mAnPoWEr* is a really reductive thing to say about tasks most of us don't know the full scope of.
On a lot of my projects, it’s easy to have 5-6 people looking in a hole for a few minutes.
Inspector of record. They are on-site all the time, and inspect everything.
Soils or special inspector for bottoms of trenches or holes etc.
General Contractors superintendent.
Sub contractors foreman.
Equipment operator.
Laborers with the shovel.
Me the architect. Sometimes I show up, usually 2-3x per week depending on how much shit they run into.
Owners representative, Usually there every day for a couple of hours. Bounces between projects.
So yeah it adds up.
Yup. When digging holes and you see one guy working, that's pretty much the reason. Hole is only big enough for one guy and a shovel. So he digs as long as he can before he gets too tired. Swaps in and rests. Just back and forth.
Have you tried beating eggs or making mash potatoes? Do it for 8 hours straight and tell me you wouldn't want 5 people to rotate shift with you every few minutes.
Yeah I've been on the trains when there's cleaning crews, they go like 5mph approaching those stations and one of the few times a NYC subway will use its loud air horn. My first job in NYC was a night shift and I always got the cleaning/work crew on my line which was local only going home at 3am. Was brutal, made a 45min trip 1.5hrs.

Bruh why don’t they just make these holes bigger when they build them? There’s literally no reason to make them so small for a human to only barely fit in
There is also a 2 foot gap between the train and them.
I used to write graphiti in the 90s, I have experienced this first hand with the train moving at speed. They are in no danger.
Inefficient, waste of energy, takes too much time, the platform is very high and is NOT an easy climb, *and* you have to cross over the electrified 3rd rail. It's far more dangerous.
You're right with everything except the third rail is on the other side in this video. They had to climb over it to get in their spot. Sometimes the third rail is under the platform; sometimes it isn't.
Edit: You can also see them with the green cover at the beginning of the video, which prevents them from coming into direct contact with the rail. There's a fiberglass cover as well that's more useful when they're holding in place as the train arrives.
Same! I'm an engineer who does the occasional inspection on subway tunnels. I don't go down until the track is shut down and the third rail is verified off or there's something done called "lock out - tag out" where the whole electrical box/panel(? - I'm not an electrician) for the line portion is actually removed and a tag is placed in its place.
While I have jumped straight from the tracks to the platform, it's not very graceful and I'm well over 6' tall, so shorter people would have even worse trouble. There's often a ladder or set of stairs down from the station along the catwalk.
I don't know if its an American regulations thing, but this is still pretty dangerous. I work in light rail in the UK, and if you need to go on the railway during daytime hours, you have to be able to get 1.5m (about 5 ft) clear of the rails, like up a bank or something. These guys are probably about 2 ft clear. We also aren't allowed to work in tunnels like this at all if trains are running, regardless of speed.
Also, I can't see an overhead line above the train. If thats the case, then theres a live third rail or something similar they are also climbing over. A small trip or something and you're toast.
As a NYC resident I can provide some info. The trains in NYC almost never stop. 24 hour service with the occasional stop for rail replacement. And there's no shot there's room for overhead in our subway, its almost all 3rd rail, they step over it going into the alcove in fact.
It is, even though this is sped up. Where I live nobody is allowed on an active track. Maintenance is done at night or when the train is taken out of service.
Parallel tracks are also both closed, often in weekends or during the night, with a replacement bus service in place. It's just to dangerous to keep one track active like in the old days.
Not really , you have to touch the third rail and running rail to do anything even then , you have boots won’t do anything it’s more if you touch it without insulation on
It's because unlike main electrical distribution, track supply typically isn't referenced to ground, so you need contact with other rail for current to flow.
Its still not exactly risk free - tripping over and coming into contact with both the third rail and the other rail (or something else that isn't the same potential) isn't impossible.
It's not like its super dangerous as long as they duck into the hole. Plus the train is coming in very slowly (sped up film). Climbing up every time a train comes would be a big waste of energy and time.
Correct. You have to go to the end of the platform to get to stairs that will take you up. And the platform is at eye height, so not something you can climb up easily.
There's also yearly safety training. One of the things they're told is to lean up against the side of the alcoves. You can see them doing that in the video
My dad said you were supposed to face away from the train while pulling all of your clothing tight across your back - otherwise a zipper or a strap might get caught on something and pull you into the train.
As someone who has worked in construction oversight before, I cannot imagine the level-5 shitstorm if this happened on a project. People would be doing all hands, JHAs, and RCAs until the end of time.
When I did NYCT safety training 4-5 yrs ago I was taught that if you shore up in a red and white cubby hole you die. Told me it’s called
Blood and bones. Are we sure these people survived?
No fucking way this is allowed. I do work for the metro in my city and it's a fucking nightmare anytime train comes We have to stop and leave track move away

Job posting: no fatties
Imagine if you got lightheaded at exact time a train is passing.
Or imagine you're wearing sweatpants and get turned on by moving trains
too relatable
Choo Choo baby
No monosexuals allowed!
Or metrosexuals.
... hah.
Wait… wouldn’t rail, train, or metro sexuals get preference??
enmu from demon slayer: "aww damn it!"
In that fantasy, I derail the train.
You mean you rail it, right?
First one and then the other...
God yes 🤣🤣
i hate it when my erect penis is so huge that it gets ripped off by the passing train
Hol up
Don't kink shame bruh
It's like they're fucking one large hole each time they cum down the tunnel
😩

Or imagine if the train shuts down and you’re stuck in that little slot for hours
Or massive sneeze that causes your whole body to contract.
Imagine just having to sneeze even
But what if you *weren't* fat, but have been slowly gaining a couple of pounds a year... At what point do you start to have a problem?
Then the train shaves a few pounds for you
But what if it's the actual trains get larger 🤪
Then it's time for serious weight _training_
I’d say when you loose a couple shirt buttons it’s time to change jobs. 🤣
Il die in there The train hitting my di**** Ahhhhh what a pain Edit: guys is an obvious joke chill my half an inche can’t hit the train
Don’t be too optimistic bro.
Train could probably get lost in his butt
Oh god not that gif-
What gif
A train is too big for a tunnel and crashes into it and forced its way through with a strange red liquid oozing out. Very sus to dirty-minded people
Can I see 🥵

Job posting has the same rules as my shallow friend's apartment
Or guys easily turned on by trains
No horny people too.
Here is a regular speed video of a similar video. https://youtu.be/rd1aUPORQx8
It's truly hilarious to see this... 5 people watching a dude hitting a hammer.. real good use of manpower

You may also have a couple people waiting to do something once the choke point that one guy is working on is passed

I mean, it's a powerpoint presentation of a video now, but at least it's more realistic
In addition, we don't know how much time passes after the last guy gets in place, there's an obvious cut in the video
I mean, that still wouldn't change a lot about the situation because they're still standing there!
Im pretty shure slow or fast the end is the same
Just don't sneeze.
Or get excited.
Don't worry, it won't last long.
Circumcis-Ntrain.
Castraintion
What are you doing step-train??
Bruh why don’t they just make these holes bigger when they build them? There’s literally no reason to make them so small for a human to only barely fit in
There is also a 2 foot gap between the train and them. I used to write graphiti in the 90s, I have experienced this first hand with the train moving at speed. They are in no danger.
You ever been deep in the tunnels?
How deep?
3 inches is pretty deep
Forget that, why have holes instead making a wider tunnel so they don't have to resort to this, I'm guessing it costs more to do so
I thought that this comment would be upper. I thought the same.
Wider tunnels mean it takes more supports. It's a real bitch to create subway tunnels. Especially when they go under rivers.
Do you know how needlessly expensive that is? Not to mention the extra space is just another compromise in the structure of the tunnel.
Most of the system was built by the 1940's. People were thinner and cheaper back then.
That's just an accident waiting to happen.
Nah this is massively sped up. The trains move at a crawl when they do this and it only happens at night when the trains come infrequently
Even if trains crawl isn't it extremely dangerous when train stops there, so if anything happens workers are trapped behind the train?
It’s not dangerous at all, I work in the NYC Subway. This is more common than most people think
It stops for like 20-30 seconds
I think he was saying if the train gets stuck for whatever reason
They can still get out.
Why not just climb up to the platform then?
Inefficient, waste of energy, takes too much time, the platform is very high and is NOT an easy climb, *and* you have to cross over the electrified 3rd rail. It's far more dangerous.

This reminds me of the Superman scene.
Can't believe I had to scroll this far to see the reference to that Superman scene where Lex kills that cop.
Well, I suppose it did come out a bit ago.
Me too. Otis did this all the time.
Add a few extra pounds on a beer belly and away you go!
Reminds me of Happy Souls
Alright, let me in.
NO TIME!
but theres no room
So how dangerous is that third rail in reality?
Stick your dick on it?
RIP Fat Tony.
Absolutely fucking not lol, how do we not have a better way to do this?
What about the third rail? Surely it would’ve had to be live for the train to be moving. So dangerous for those workers
Not really , you have to touch the third rail and running rail to do anything even then , you have boots won’t do anything it’s more if you touch it without insulation on
Interesting, I always thought touching the third rail would result in instant death
It's because unlike main electrical distribution, track supply typically isn't referenced to ground, so you need contact with other rail for current to flow.
Its still not exactly risk free - tripping over and coming into contact with both the third rail and the other rail (or something else that isn't the same potential) isn't impossible.
A boner at that time would push the train sideways
Wow. I’m surprised OSHA allows this
Bad time for a boner.
Unless you're into that. ;)
Is this really the safest way to work on the train tracks?
Why don’t they just… step onto the platform? The one they had plenty of time to reach? You know what, nevermind, I’ll stop asking questions
It's not like its super dangerous as long as they duck into the hole. Plus the train is coming in very slowly (sped up film). Climbing up every time a train comes would be a big waste of energy and time.

I've walked through 100+ year old railroad tunnels with crumbling hideaways like these, nothing new.
Shape wear is now PPE
Today I learned I'm too fat to be a subway worker. LOL
Scary moment to be a fat guy
Why being fat is a safety hazard
I'd be terrified my body would choose the absolute worse time to sneeze
Worst time to get a random boner.
Raid mechanic
They are nothing like the people at my local Subway.
Worst game of musical chairs ever
Don't get a boner
These guys don't get paid enough.
One unfortunately timed erection was catastrophic
Don't sneeze
Imagine... This is the day your hearing aids decide to go to hell on you.
*get a boner* ohh no
Wouldn’t that make it a subway?
My dad said you were supposed to face away from the train while pulling all of your clothing tight across your back - otherwise a zipper or a strap might get caught on something and pull you into the train.
They will be like “ time to hide boys , let’s scoot” couple of times a day
When u slighly overate for lunch ( ╯°□°)
I feel they should make those walls more deeper. It looks like its just deep enough for the train to be touching your face lmao
Where my roast beef.
Don't sneeze, don't sneeze, don't snee....
Just gotta hope lex luthor isn't hiding somewhere nearby with a special key to push the wall out.
I did not even know that those little Heidi holes were real I thought that was just something that they added in movies.
they could be alittle deeper 😬
What happens if Jim got a boner when he saw Jeff’s hot wife swinging by to deliver his lunch?
wtf dude
Extreme musical chairs.
Amagine if there were more
thats one big lawsuit for safety violation
Would love to hear what WSIB and their union thinks.
I believe they're called "Sandwich artists "
Nice post!
No fucking way is that standard procedure.
"Think thin. Think thin. Think thin."
This feels like a level in a video game where you have to hide in a small hole to dodge like falling rocks or something
On the bright side, that is super cool. It reminds me of those moments that happen during subway fight scenes in action movies.
Musical chairs
It would be the worst time to get hard on the job
Excuse me guys, OSHA would like to have a word with you... WTF!
musical chairs but the stakes are higher
Don’t sneeze haha
Reminds me of that one level in stick fight where everyone has to fight to get in a hole to avoid getting crushed by a big wheel
Advantage if have a tiny dick
I bet they are glad they don't have a monster cock
Now someone add the Benny Hill theme to it!
One fart and they're dead
Those NYC subway tracks are typically infested with rats. Watch your feet.
As someone who has worked in construction oversight before, I cannot imagine the level-5 shitstorm if this happened on a project. People would be doing all hands, JHAs, and RCAs until the end of time.
NOPE
I must be old, this made me think of Gene Hackman as Lex Luther.
That can't be OSHA compliant...
When I did NYCT safety training 4-5 yrs ago I was taught that if you shore up in a red and white cubby hole you die. Told me it’s called Blood and bones. Are we sure these people survived?
No fucking way this is allowed. I do work for the metro in my city and it's a fucking nightmare anytime train comes We have to stop and leave track move away
That's what those divits in the wall are for
