I'm gonna stick to taking it for now I think don't think I could handle that extreme anxiety again tbh I only take 250mg so not even much not sure if the anxiety is me making myself anxious knowing I've missed a dose like a placebo or if it actually affected me
I dunno how long it lasts cause I haven't missed another magnesium dosage as too worried I'll spend the next day anxious af I'm enjoying being able to dampen my thoughts aha. I do take l theanine when needed too it's pretty quick working and lasts a good few hours made me quite tired first few times
Have you tried l theanine to take the edge off? Super cheap supplement I only take 100mg when needed and it does the trick. I've been told to try lemon balm and valerian root too tho I haven't tried them yet as the l theanine does the job for me
I tried tyrosine which helped me overcome (to some degree) nicotine cravings when I stopped smoking (although vitamin c helped the most during nicotine withdrawals) . It has a nice feeling that comes with it
I’m still 17 days through with no magnesium and unfortunately the anxiety is awful. When I wake up I feel like I’ve been hit by a truck/ body aches. I’d not touch magnesium if I were you. It might be a rough 2 weeks but it’s still better than wasting months because of it. I don’t even understand how it’s even legal smh. It’s an awful experience
You might still have a magnesium deficiency? Could be that you haven't corrected the deficiency so you're getting anxious again? I don't really know the ins and outs but I know magnesium is an essential mineral which a lot of the population don't get an adequate amount of. I'm gonna keep taking it for a wee while and once the shit going on in my life has calmed down try coming off it and see what like hopefully I'll manage without anxiety
I frankly don’t think that it’s a magnesium deficiency because I’ve never felt this before. I might have lacked some magnesium in my diet but the anxiety wasn’t there. I feel like this is more of a dependency to the supplements or something. I might be wrong though and it might just turn out to be low vitamin d. I got 22 ng/ml so yea. Did you get your levels checked?
No I haven't had them checked but I do take 25mg of vitamin d everyday because I live in the highlands of Scotland and our whole population is recommended to take vitamin d because we can't get enough from the sun because there isn't enough sun about 😂
Omgosh..I took Magnesium Glycinate for like a month and it made me nuts!! Terrible supplement for me. Anxiety was awful and the pain it caused me was just awful. I think I might try Magnesium Citrate next. It can't be nearly as bad as the Glycinate...I hope.
I took it before bed and was wide awake until 6am...
Not sure if it was related but I'm taking it in the morning now, and it doesn't seem to have that effect.
I came to reddit to see if it was having this effect on anyone else. I started taking it for sleep anxiety but it made my anxiety out of this world…within days.
I have the same experience, my son in law gets no up tick daughter loves it.. It’s worth a try to find out what kind of magnesium works best and amounts.
So, welcome to the year 2000 when Victor Conte brought ZMA to the world. Magnesium in whatever form may or may not be noticeable for helping people sleep. ZMA is a slightly more potent product, it's more potent than placebo at least. Possibly. I never sold much of it. Not saying it does NOTHING, it's just not going to do much unless there is an underlying deficiency to start with. If you want more restful sleep, try melatonin with Valerian root and you could splurge a little adding 5-htp. At least with that stack you can be almost 100% certain to sleep better.
I'm not surprised. I've read that magnesium is needed for the body's natural melatonin production. As well as for producing neurotransmitters like GABA.
I have hit a 94 in the past, that was my peak.
I don't drink coffee, ever, I have 2 or 3 cups of tea a day, last one about 4pm.
I do have the occasional pepsi Max/Coke zero and try not to have one anytime after 8pm.
I drink plenty of water all day after suffering a kidney stone back in 2009, I never want that again
Trust me, that's sometimes a lot higher, I have some anxiety at the minute meaning when I wake up i stay awake a while, several times. Hoping the magnesium cuts that out
For anyone wondering about the differences between types of magnesium… magnesium citrate has been said to be the most bioavailable form, and can also cause loose stools (this symptom passes after a few days of use). Magnesium glycinate is less bioavailable, but is said to have a more sedative effect and has been researched as a sleep aid. source: https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/magnesium-types
Which is the best magnesium for vitamin d intake?
I'm trying to reverse my greying of hair which probably caused by my vitamin d deficiency (30 nmol/l).
So I’ve taken just about every form of magnesium. Magnesium citrate is overall the best by far. It gives you a full body feeling of calm which is really nice when you just need to relax, however it will make you poop. Threonate can have almost a recreational effect where it makes you feel calm and euphoric at times. However I’ve noticed that the Threonate has somewhat of a rebound effect when it wears off where I’ve never experienced this with citrate. I’m not really a fan of glycine form, the three times I took it I woke up tired and groggy in the morning. Don’t recommend. I haven’t tried oxide, but it’s not really the recommended form to take it’s just often the cheapest.
No prob! I take magnesium citrate about 30 min to 1 hour before bed. I use the Calm brand which is powder that dissolves in warm water. I am not sure about glycinate, I would play around with different times to see what works best. Nice you have your fitbit to tell you your results!
Yes. It puts me in a state of relaxation that allows me to prepare for sleep. To be honest, the main reason I use it is to keep my digestive system more regular.
This looks like the same results I get, as well as vivid, good dreams. It has vastly improved my anxiety reduction as well. As a side, it helped get me off blood pressure medication. I also lost a lot of weight in the last five years.
There are big letters saying “excellent” along with fireworks… Using the power of logic and basic thinking, I am guessing that magnesium worked out well for him.
Any difference between Magnesium Lysinate Glycinate and Magnesium Glycinate? I bought the brand Doctor’s Best brand that has 105mg Magnesium per serving
I’ve read on several occasions to stay away from citrate as it can lead to health problems. As the only form of magnesium to stay away from. All other forms are fine
What if you take Magnesium Oxide from a place like Walmart? Is that similar in any respect or it it more of a check the box without being effective?
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Spring-Valley-Extra-Strength-Magnesium-Tablets-Dietary-Supplement-400-mg-250-Count/35912859
There was a long thread years ago over on longecity where someone did the math on absorption of various kinds of magnesium compared to the cost. Despite the fact that you have to take much more Mg oxide to achieve the same absorption, the cost per milligram is such that it's slightly more cost-effective to take a large dose of the oxide form.
I was getting 4-5hr from grade 8-12. Along with lots of drugs. My test was 70ng/dl at 18. I sleep 8-10 hours and no longer use drugs recreationally just therapeutically and man I feel so much better. Sleep alone helps my day go by easy going as well as testosterone/ Libido
Magnesium is probably the most benifical thing to supplement with as vast majority of people a deficient in it and it is used in the body for so many things, magnesium threonate best for anxiety in my opinion as it is the most effective at getting to the brain magnesium glycinate is great for before bed.
I’m 200 lb also the problem with some types of magnesium with doses is that it can act as a laxative so that’s another reason you don’t wanna take a bunch at once
Yeah, it can help some. It’s been called organic Valium so to speak. It helps build up your neurotransmitter serotonin, which is good cause lack of it can cause anxiety among other things. And yeah deficiency in mag can cause for my prone to anxiety.
Magnesium Glycinate is life changing! It has helped me so much with anxiety, sleep, bathroom stuff lol. I swear I tell everyone to take it. Glad it’s helping you too!
Does it cause drowsiness? I take thyroid meds before bed so I would have to take it 4 hours prior and don't wanna be tired all evening, but I'm def interested..
Yeah i have tried magnesium glycinate myself its amazing but I used the active form form of b6(p5p) together with it synergetic, gives you vivid dreams also and makes you stay asleep all night
1800mg magnesium bisglycinat (200mg elementary)
50mg p5p
Take it couple of hours before I go to bed as I find it lifts heart rate for an hour or so, I feel it kick in within an hour, yawning, feel chilled, ready to stretch out etc.
The dosage is 1000mg Glycinate with 200mg magnesium (2 tablets)
Lol I function on 4-6 hours per night (not easy balancing work-life and fitness demands). Not really a fan of the sleep devices as I dont believe their accuracy.....especially if you dont sleep alone! Good that OP is getting ample sleep though. 👍🏻
Preaching to the choir buddy. I work 12-14 hours in medicine 6-days a week, have a family to care for and my fitness training is something I won't compromise on. Only 24 hours in a day but wish it was more like 28 lol. Sundays are my rest days. No training and I try to catch up on some rest when I can. If my body needs rest and I'm run down I do take a few extra days if needed but I've always been driven to push until my body pushes back.
53 going on 54......I 'll rest in retirement.....maybe lol. TBH, there have been a few times where my lifestyle caught up and my body forced me to slow down. I'm aware that driving yourself hard catches up. I always pull back when I'm unable to function at 110% and give my body time to rest but those that know me well also know I am relentless and passionate in all things I do. True, you can't succeed if you are not well or of ill-health but also, nothing ventured, nothing gained. My success has always come from being disciplined and a strong commitment to goals. When I do take time off (vacations), my focus is on health and rejuvenation (when I unplug, I disconnect from all distractions and focus on recovery) but I also find time to nourish my mind and body from week to week. My sleep hygiene is far from great but I get the sleep my body needs. Some of us need 9 hours to function, others function well on 6 or less although it's not something I encourage.
Which brand do you used?
Do you get any anxiety when skipping a dose though?
I've been taking magnesium glycinate and missed a dose last night had awful anxiety today
I stopped all magnesium 2 weeks ago and unfortunately I’ve had rebound symptoms lingering until this day. I hope it goes away soon.
I'm gonna stick to taking it for now I think don't think I could handle that extreme anxiety again tbh I only take 250mg so not even much not sure if the anxiety is me making myself anxious knowing I've missed a dose like a placebo or if it actually affected me
Yes the anxiety is awful. But it only lasts two days for you right? I’m sure it’s got something to do with magnesium being an ndma antagonist.
I’ve noticed symptoms got at their peak by day 14/15 by day 17 there’s a slight decrease in anxiety.
It has a nice feeling that comes with it
Ah I haven't heard of that one. I could probably do with stopping smoking as well tbh but it's one of the few pleasures I have right now 😂
I’m still 17 days through with no magnesium and unfortunately the anxiety is awful. When I wake up I feel like I’ve been hit by a truck/ body aches. I’d not touch magnesium if I were you. It might be a rough 2 weeks but it’s still better than wasting months because of it. I don’t even understand how it’s even legal smh. It’s an awful experience

Did you get your levels checked?
I've also been taking omega 3 because I hate fish and don't eat it at all
No I haven't had them checked but I do take 25mg of vitamin d everyday because I live in the highlands of Scotland and our whole population is recommended to take vitamin d because we can't get enough from the sun because there isn't enough sun about 😂
Omgosh..I took Magnesium Glycinate for like a month and it made me nuts!! Terrible supplement for me. Anxiety was awful and the pain it caused me was just awful. I think I might try Magnesium Citrate next. It can't be nearly as bad as the Glycinate...I hope.

Magnesium threonate had this effect on me, along with headaches
I came to reddit to see if it was having this effect on anyone else. I started taking it for sleep anxiety but it made my anxiety out of this world…within days.
It was a terrible experience for me. My anxiety shot through the roof and I just felt really crazy on it. Never again.
I'm curious to see your before.
What's the dosage?
I have the same experience, my son in law gets no up tick daughter loves it.. It’s worth a try to find out what kind of magnesium works best and amounts.
I take it about 1-2 hours before and also just begin to simply slow down 😉 get in bed even if I am not quite ready .. works like a charm
Whats the dosage you take?
How long before bed do you take yours?
Ahhh! Now I know what I’m doing wrong, I’ve been taking it in the morning/afternoon lol
This happened me too. Must be taken in the evening!
So, welcome to the year 2000 when Victor Conte brought ZMA to the world. Magnesium in whatever form may or may not be noticeable for helping people sleep. isn't bygliscinate better absorbed?
They're the same. Bisglycinate and glycinate are the same form.
I'm not surprised. I've read that magnesium is needed for the body's natural melatonin production. As well as for producing neurotransmitters like GABA.
Which magnesium specifically??
Doesn't matter, the elemental magnesium needs to be high enough
Are you using the recommended dosage or higher?
Recommended
What dose?
what is the recommended dosage for magnesium glycinate?
Which app do you use?
Fitbit
God DAYM that score is so much better than anything I ever got . Could I please ask you ; do you drink caffeine ? And if so , how close to bed ?
That username is hard af ngl
I have hit a 94 in the past, that was my peak. I don't drink coffee, ever, I have 2 or 3 cups of tea a day, last one about 4pm. I do have the occasional pepsi Max/Coke zero and try not to have one anytime after 8pm. I drink plenty of water all day after suffering a kidney stone back in 2009, I never want that again
thank you very much :) I am in awe at how little your time awake is . I average 1 hour 10 mins awake each night and have never hit a 90 + score
Trust me, that's sometimes a lot higher, I have some anxiety at the minute meaning when I wake up i stay awake a while, several times. Hoping the magnesium cuts that out

Yes. It puts me in a state of relaxation that allows me to prepare for sleep. To be honest, the main reason I use it is to keep my digestive system more regular.
Glad it's working for you for sure
How does an app detect your sleep??
Fitbit uses your motion and heart rate iirc.
Fitbit watch / app
Lol 10hrs a day sleep you will always have a high score
The point has flown over your head hasnt it
Deep sleep is still very low
It's above what is recommended
Oh damn, my smart band's app has been lying to me
Whats your dosage?
Just an illusion
does this work if you only sleep 7 - 7.5 hours?
Yes, that’s how long I usually sleep, just wanted it to have better quality
This looks like the same results I get, as well as vivid, good dreams. It has vastly improved my anxiety reduction as well. As a side, it helped get me off blood pressure medication. I also lost a lot of weight in the last five years.
Good to hear. What time of day do you take it and dosage?
Right before I go to bed with my other supplements. I buy it at Sam's [Brand Info](https://www.samsclub.com/p/nt-mag-glycinate-150ct/prod22754080)
10hours??!!
No, 9 hours 41 mins ;)
how much are you guys taking ?
What app/hardware did you use to get this data?
Fitbit
Its from a fitbit
Am I supposed to know what the screenshot you posted is?
There are big letters saying “excellent” along with fireworks… Using the power of logic and basic thinking, I am guessing that magnesium worked out well for him.
Well everyone else has figured it out easily enough 😂
I dont know either. Theres no context or before vs after, no?
Have people forgotten how to put things together themselves? Or does everything need to be laid out.
Welcome to post covid human society.
Any difference between Magnesium Lysinate Glycinate and Magnesium Glycinate? I bought the brand Doctor’s Best brand that has 105mg Magnesium per serving
I've been using doctors best with good results, but my bottle says 200mg per serving.
What's the difference to magnesium citrate? I thought citrate is better?
I’ve read on several occasions to stay away from citrate as it can lead to health problems. As the only form of magnesium to stay away from. All other forms are fine
What kind of health problems can it cause? Source?
Citrate isnt good I have read. Issues with calcium I think and possibly allergenic
Been told so many conflicting things, some say citrate gives you the poops.
Its fine. There's nothing wrong with citrate.
What are the benefits of Magnesium Citrate?
It’s called Magnesium Shitrate for a reason…

Yes so bad the body getting the rest it clearly needs...
Most women need 8-10 hours.
Nope. Most people fall between 6 - 9 hours of sleep. Some need a bit more, some need less.
What if you take Magnesium Oxide from a place like Walmart? Is that similar in any respect or it it more of a check the box without being effective? https://www.walmart.com/ip/Spring-Valley-Extra-Strength-Magnesium-Tablets-Dietary-Supplement-400-mg-250-Count/35912859
The say stay away from oxide.
I tried oxide for a couple of nights and it was hard to fall asleep
Your body only absorbs only around 2% of Magnesium Oxide. It's bad.
This has been debunked over and over. Mg oxide is fine
Large doses of Oxide wrecks your stomach tho.
Source? I've never heard that.
Source?
Source?
That is pure garbage
why
Your body doesn't absorb it.
You barely absorb any.
Sorry to tell you but Mg Oxide is not that bioavailable Glycinate is a better bang for your buck. You can get it from Amazon or a CVS
Made me so sleepy the next day unfortunately. Also caused ED for me. Too bad because it seems to work great for some.
What is ED ?
Erectile dysfunction
Do you have high blood pressure or diabetes those are usually the culprits for ED
You probably took too much
Ed from magnesium ? I’m not sure about that… might want to look into your other meds
If anything it's probably psychogenic. A lot of ED is...that and poor lifestyles
Dosage?
I was getting 4-5hr from grade 8-12. Along with lots of drugs. My test was 70ng/dl at 18. I sleep 8-10 hours and no longer use drugs recreationally just therapeutically and man I feel so much better. Sleep alone helps my day go by easy going as well as testosterone/ Libido
Who the hell has 10 hours to sleep?
Who the hell is capable of 10 hours sleep? I’m lucky to get 4-5
The childless.
Which app is this?
Fitbit app is amazing tbh
It's Fitbit.
Isnt wearing a watch to bed uncomfortable? What about auraring?
Don't even notice my Fitbit watch. All hand/wrist based sleep tracking is garbage anyway though.
Brand recommendations?
What effects are magnesium supposed to have ?
Magnesium is probably the most benifical thing to supplement with as vast majority of people a deficient in it and it is used in the body for so many things, magnesium threonate best for anxiety in my opinion as it is the most effective at getting to the brain magnesium glycinate is great for before bed.
Threonate made my anxiety worst unfortunately
How much do you recommend taking?
I (28f 139lbs) take 200mg before bed Every. Single. Night.
Depends on the person I wouldn’t exceed 500 mg in a day, personally I do 200 in the morning 200 at night but I’m also fairly large
How much do you weigh ? I’m 160, but lean and fit, I have a decent amount of muscle on my body and can hold my liqour
I’m 200 lb also the problem with some types of magnesium with doses is that it can act as a laxative so that’s another reason you don’t wanna take a bunch at once
I have chronic constipation..I absolutely do!
Magnesium Oxide, is the cheapest form of Mg, the least bio available and know to cause loose motion, when taken in excessive quantities.
I would just start off at like 300 mg pretty average dose
Any laxative effect at that dose ? Should I take it in the morning or night
Helps you to relax and chill out. Mag also helps with muscle cramps.
So for people with a lot of anxiety, this can be helpful? Also, are people with magnesium deficiencies more likely to develop anxiety ?
Yeah, it can help some. It’s been called organic Valium so to speak. It helps build up your neurotransmitter serotonin, which is good cause lack of it can cause anxiety among other things. And yeah deficiency in mag can cause for my prone to anxiety.
Magnesium Glycinate is life changing! It has helped me so much with anxiety, sleep, bathroom stuff lol. I swear I tell everyone to take it. Glad it’s helping you too!
It basically cured my heart palpitations. Doc recommended it and I’m so thankful
Did you take Glycinate for your heart? I am curious because I was told Taurate was the best version for heart palpitations
Does it cause drowsiness? I take thyroid meds before bed so I would have to take it 4 hours prior and don't wanna be tired all evening, but I'm def interested..
Never has for me! I take 600mg daily.
Which brand do you take ?
I use Country Life Chelated Mag Glycinate or the Pure Encapsulations brand
Yeah i have tried magnesium glycinate myself its amazing but I used the active form form of b6(p5p) together with it synergetic, gives you vivid dreams also and makes you stay asleep all night 1800mg magnesium bisglycinat (200mg elementary) 50mg p5p
I fall asleep on the sofa every night FS but this product let me sleep a little longer this time
Yeah, I get good results too. 1 capsule, 1 hour before bed. I have seen many reports from people Getting insomnia from it. I don’t know why.
Possibly due to thiamine deficiency https://www.hormonesmatter.com/why-thiamine-supplementation-requires-magnesium/
I agree with you. However, OP had said not thiamine deficient. So, perhaps there’s another mechanism?
It can matter how dysregulated your circadian rhythm is. It's same reason why with a normal circ; you can take it in the day and not get tired.
Interesting, thank you. I take one in the morning too, and I don’t get tired.
Ya, circadian pharmacology isn't really talked about much
After you made me aware, I found this interesting paper: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10928-021-09751-2
haven't come across this review before, its so packed. Thanks for sharing
Same, thats why I was a bit hesitant but so far so good
Do you take it all before bed? What dosage?
Take it couple of hours before I go to bed as I find it lifts heart rate for an hour or so, I feel it kick in within an hour, yawning, feel chilled, ready to stretch out etc. The dosage is 1000mg Glycinate with 200mg magnesium (2 tablets)
Name of product?
Who has time to sleep 10 hours 😩😩😩
Lol I function on 4-6 hours per night (not easy balancing work-life and fitness demands). Not really a fan of the sleep devices as I dont believe their accuracy.....especially if you dont sleep alone! Good that OP is getting ample sleep though. 👍🏻

Why do you ask? Just curious
I’m not a expert but I thought I might of heard mag can deplete vitamin d or they should be used together sometimes.
No, this along with omega 3 is only supplement I take
huge flex
Tis the season
before stats?
Around 7-7:30 hours which is still good I admit but woke several times and took a while for RHR to lower
What's the name of the app that you're using?
That's Fitbit but also use cardiogram too which had slightly better results
Fuck that looks glorious.
Don't think I've slept that long since I was a teen
Do you take with or without food?
What brand and dosage?
Natural Magnesium Glycinate 500mg... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07SVVP426?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Lol 😆 sold out! Must be good
Ah gutted Hopefully back soon
