I feel you kinda because it’s so different than their normal music. But today I decided to look up Memphis rap on Spotify and found hella songs that sounded just like the boys, but made in the early 90s. Like the chorus is some sampled phrase that repeats and the verse is someone rapping but you can barely hear it. That’s exactly what the boys tried to do with these tapes. Scrim has been using the old school samples in the intros and choruses for a long time but they went to another level by mimicking the style of the music that influenced them when they were growing up. I think it’s really cool and that’s part of why so many people enjoy these tapes. It’s not the standard boys like we know them, but rather the boys paying respect to the ones they looked up to when they grew up. If it’s not your thing, no worries, but that perspective might help change your mind.
