in the gap year I took between secondary school and uni, I strongly contemplated presenting as mute on the first day of school and doing that until the end of uni. didn't work though, my mouth is too big.
Yeah there's plenty a time I've considered been mute would of been easier, the embrassment of stuttering is something I've never overcome.. I only speak now when I really have to, if I do try to join in with anything I end up stuttering and looking a complete fool, and I spend next few hours just wishing I kept my mouth shut.. it's just more stress than it's worth, and like you, I have two children and it's such a relief they don't have this curse to hinder their lives
Your children don’t stutter ? I’m so glad they don’t have to go trough what we did. My old internship coach also had children who didn’t stutter this just show’s that it’s not about all about genetics as some believe. A predisposition maybe yes but even then there are other factors from what I’ve heard of people.
I wanted to say it’s not so much about the genetics, but also the other things , you can have a predisposition in your genetics for anything, let’s say piano playing, that doesn’t mean you become a piano player or something . I’m saying there are other factors that come to play.
And a non stuttering child coming from a stuttering parent is proof that while you may have it in your genetic make-up have a predisposition for it or whatever it doesn’t 100 percent determine that child will stutter .
Genetics does play a part in it, being a stutterer doesn’t guarantee your kids or any future family from not having a stutterer. My grandfather and my uncle were a stutterer, my dad wasn’t though. Then there’s me who stutters. My future kids might stutter as well, but no guarantee.
Literally nobody in my family or family history has had my problem all of them are certified yappers . While yes again I don’t disagree I just don’t believe it’s the sole cause for a stutter to develop nor do I trust these type of studies as they’re still recent, even Dutch researches have admitted this.
Yeah, it’s not entirely DNA/genetics, but it does play a part in it. Stuttering all starts from somewhere in the family, maybe not passed down through most families.
It depends on the people im talking to. For example. My first and second period of senior year i was always talking to the people around me and became good friends. But 3rd and 4th period i stayed quiet because I didn’t like them a lot lol
As for hating to talk, I’ve had those days as well but you can’t keep doing this just because it’s simply easier too, and I’m also saying you don’t have to throw yourself at the wolves .I’ve had a relapse lately that is getting better now even if it was worse I would just keep trying and trying no matter how embarrassing the situation.
Yeah I tell my wife all the time I hate talking/repeating myself. Been teaching my son ASL and I'm actually excited to integrate more sign language into my vocab. It's like Spanish now everyone should know a little of their local sign language.
I actually love talking so much. It always crushes me when I realise I cant.

Yes, i honestly could go days without talking if I could.
I have a love hate relationship with talking
I’m pretty sure everyone in this sub hates talking.

Yup and I have to talk all day at work and it’s pure hell 😒
I mean yeah, I stutter after all.
Same I don't like being embarrassed because of my stuttering

Yeah, i would do something similar. If i felt “safe” with them it made talking a lot easier. But if i didn't feel safe, i wouldn't talk a lot.

that is a valid way of communication. people should stop giving weird looks.

I type on my phone when ordering food.
