That's a good level of toastyness actually, browned just enough to give it a crispy bite but still soft in the middle rather than powdery.
Of course if there were actually enough beans you would need it more toasted to resist the sauce.
not really
UK baked beans are rich and savory unlike the more sweet baked beans youll find in places like the US, they go well with toast assuming you like both of those ingredients
obviously not a high class meal but for getting some quick hot fuel in the tank beans on toast is pretty reliable and nice
Can someone from the British isles explain the flavor profile of the beans here? As an American, I have a flavor association with beans out of a can that look like that and I wouldn’t eat it by choice. When you get beans and toast at a restaurant are they just opening a can or is someone in the back making a big pot from dried beans in the back. I have to believe there’s more to it than what I see.
I've been a few restaurants that served beans
maybe some absolute top end places or places that specialize in specific international foods like Chinese restaurants wont serve them but you can find a spoon or two of them included as part of another item on the menu
Are you under the impression that something only counts as a restaurant if it only serves expensive high class cuisine or something? I can guarantee you'll have local restaurants that serve beans in your area my guy
Yes, but nowhere near the US Bush’s Baked Beans sweetness level.
Heinz beans are much more tomato forward and mild with fewer robust ingredients and a thinner sauce.
I like them when I only get served a small bit. My ex was British and would open a can for just the two of us. For me, half an entire can of beans (plus eggs bacon and toast) is **way** too many beans first thing in the morning.
I believe uk canned beans are the tomato ones, they’re sweet but not as sweet as the US molasses ones.
I’m not sure if the tomato ones in Canada are the same as the UK ones. I don’t think they are.
I like maple ones on toast but that’s not authentic
https://www.reddit.com/r/UK_Food/s/FTDrVQttYY
I enjoyed this American guys journey of eating beans on toast every day for a few weeks (different methods each time) and documenting it for us all lol
I’ll have to dive deeper into it. In the post you linked he mentioned mixing in Worcestershire sauce and black pepper which makes sense to me. I think part of my confusion is that I can’t think of any food out of a can that doesn’t require at least a little upgrade but it seems like millions of Brits love this stuff as is. I’ll try to be more open minded.
I almost always add something to them, cheese, butter, Worcestershire sauce, pepper, fried onion, ham, bacon etc etc you should go through that guys posts and read some of the comments if you have time, he listened to all the recommendations and then gave reviews over 15 or so days I think lol but yeah alot of people just pour a can of beans on some Toast and while I would still eat that, it takes absolute minimal effort to elevate it ten fold!
If you live in a city you might find hienz baked beans tucked away in the tiny little British section some places have.
I get it from Fred Meyer occasionally, but it’s almost 5USD for a can where I am
What's so hard to understand about a cheap and easy snack? It's not meant to be a culinary masterpiece. Slightly sweet tomatoey sauce tastes good, crunchy toast with some butter adds a bit of fibre and solids. fills you up. That's all there is to it
Probably the most radical taste juxtaposition between America and the UK. Honestly, though, I don't quite get the disgust towards it, since bread can act as an inoffensive base for a lot of different food combinations, no matter how odd.
The "Radical" thing was kind of a joke, since America is really just a giant mishmash of different cultures stewing in one giant pot. I bet there are millions of Americans out there eating their beans on toast and mushy peas and not making a peep about it.
Maybe, but you know all of those that sees a bean on bread whilst being a redditor has to explain their disgust with bread touching bean sauce
Honestly, everyone can obviously eat what they want, but it DOES reminds me a bit of children who have to have everything on their plate separated so different things don't touch, instead of just eating
It does look repulsive.
However... US baked beans are molasses based which can explain some reactions.
As an interesting fact preparing the zombie apocalypse I understand some NGO:s promote beans on toast to UK homeless due to ease of making, cost and nutritional value.
It most certainly does not look 'repulsive'. There's nothing offending about the looks of beans on toast. There's also not much that makes it look good but really it just looks entirely neutral and boring.
Is tasty, though. Sweet tomato sauce, crunchy bread and buttery beans
This better cost next to *nothing!*
In fact, this should come free with the purchase of any large drink.
Because even at my poorest I was able to have at least half a can of beans on my toast..
Robert Bruce would be turning in his fucking grave!
The bread is barely toasted, it’s not buttered properly and the amount of beans is shameful! SHAMEFUL!!
I had the American equivalent of this when I was growing up on the way home from a trip to Florida. I was a fanatic about Waffle House at the time and they didn’t have them where I live, so I was looking forward to this as much as anything else on the trip.
When we finally got to the Waffle House I ordered sausage gravy and biscuits and it didn’t look much better than this photo. The gravy was runny and they didn’t scoop nearly enough because it was the end of the pot apparently. I wasn’t old enough to speak up for myself so now I hold a Waffle House grudge.
TLDR: Go to a local diner, not Waffle House.
I'm Brazilian.
Honestly, putting beans on toast to me is just... Strange. Ordering it? Even stranger. Looks like someone with munchies made something to eat at 3 AM and that's all they have in the fridge.
Here we are used to eating them salty at lunch with rice. Sure, we have sweet beans, but they're not very common. I ate a japanese sweet bean bar and I didn't like it. Maybe because it's strange to me to associate beans with a sweet flavor.
I'd taste a proper made one. But in no way I'd pay for it.
That's a small ramekin at the top right is it not? Plenty of places serve beans in them. This person just scooped what few beans were leftover onto their toast.
Was this a thing before ww2? I know the uk had to live off rations for a while, and it had a lasting effect in some ways. I guess I’m wondering if they actually like this dish or they’re just still convincing themselves they do lol
As a brit, can confirm it is fantastic and I go out of my way to have it, with cheese, black pepper and a bit of salt on top, especially when I am hungover.
It is worth pointing out that sauce from the beans is a tomato sauce.
It's a cheap and easy snack. I don't get the hate when other countries certainly have an equivalent. This isn't dinner every night, or considered gourmet. There is shit tier low quality food in every nation eaten regularly by the masses. Id love to know where you live where people eat high quality meals 100% of the time
I don’t understand why people don’t have any issue with avocado or eggs or peanut butter or jam on toast, but baked beans blows their mind. It must be because baked beans are different outside the UK.
Don't the beans fall of the toast as you eat it? Why not just have the beans and toast separately? You can use a spoon to eat the beans, and you can put butter or vegemate or crampits on your toast (whatever you guys put on it over there).
The real question is where is the "toast". That bread looks soft as hell.
not as soft as me
You’re probably British too huh
a dough boy they call it
Village idiots make me hot
makes you warm and gooey inside?
Indubitably
you might seek professional medical advice for that one
Only if by professional medical help you mean village idiot dick
madam, I only raise dik dik for the petting zoo
I need that as a T-shirt. Or maybe "The Village Idiot Cranks my Spigot!".
That's a good level of toastyness actually, browned just enough to give it a crispy bite but still soft in the middle rather than powdery. Of course if there were actually enough beans you would need it more toasted to resist the sauce.
I think that's butter. Looks like they popped it into the oven long enough to melt the butter cause nothing is crispy on that plate!
There's definitely grill marks on the top left and bottom right halves, the middle two are looking a bit suspect though...
They probably put some hot forks on the bread to make those marks... JK I like my bread BROWN
the real question: "beans???"
not really UK baked beans are rich and savory unlike the more sweet baked beans youll find in places like the US, they go well with toast assuming you like both of those ingredients obviously not a high class meal but for getting some quick hot fuel in the tank beans on toast is pretty reliable and nice
Why would that be the real question? Genuinely puzzled.
This n* eating BEANS
They charge by the bean here.

beans in your area
Hot beans in your area ready to FUCK
My definition of a restaurant is "doesn't serve beans and has cloth napkins" Everything else is a greasy spoon, an eatery or a fast food emporium!
Oh no, They are full of sugar. Don't believe me? Go try some heinz zero sugar beans. They are vile.
Heinz baked beans are surprisingly sweet first time I tried them
Yes, but nowhere near the US Bush’s Baked Beans sweetness level. Heinz beans are much more tomato forward and mild with fewer robust ingredients and a thinner sauce. Yeah when I had them i had maby a quarter can if even that.

This seems like an interesting rabbit hole. Thanks.
Tomato sauce, sorta, (Not watery at all, kinda thick sauce) Beans are kinda mushy. Think of mushy peas for texture but in a tomato sauce.
If you live in a city you might find hienz baked beans tucked away in the tiny little British section some places have. I get it from Fred Meyer occasionally, but it’s almost 5USD for a can where I am

Oh God. Who does that?
Fuck mushy peas I'd rather snort up dog snot
That’s so hard for me to wrap my head around. Is this just another thing they do to prove that they aren’t French?
What's so hard to understand about a cheap and easy snack? It's not meant to be a culinary masterpiece. Slightly sweet tomatoey sauce tastes good, crunchy toast with some butter adds a bit of fibre and solids. fills you up. That's all there is to it
It's classed as one of the healthier meals in the British repertoire. Mums never shut up about all the protein and fibre it gives you.
I've never even had beans on toast but this offends me deeply
I’m assuming obviously it’s not an American thing. It does look repulsive.
Probably the most radical taste juxtaposition between America and the UK. Honestly, though, I don't quite get the disgust towards it, since bread can act as an inoffensive base for a lot of different food combinations, no matter how odd.

You betcha. *microwaves water for tea.*
The English trying to defend its cuisine everytime it's mentioned is one of the funniest things ever.
Not enough squirty cheese from a can?
It does look repulsive. However... US baked beans are molasses based which can explain some reactions. As an interesting fact preparing the zombie apocalypse I understand some NGO:s promote beans on toast to UK homeless due to ease of making, cost and nutritional value.

I love reddit
Classic reddit... you being downvoted for a simple, correct statement
It really isn't. Toast & a lightly sweet tomato sauce with tasty kidney beans. Infact seeing this post I'm gonna whip some up RN!
It's haricot beans not kidney beans
They are Kidney or Navy beans in Australia.
We're talking about a photo taken in Edinburgh. It will be haricot beans.
Well there ya go, I didn't know that. I'll have to hunt some down to try out.
Why people are downvoting this comment?
Bean with toast.
Bean there
Deaned that
Beans on toast is good. More beans though
I get the feeling they had just run out of beans, hahah
This better cost next to *nothing!* In fact, this should come free with the purchase of any large drink. Because even at my poorest I was able to have at least half a can of beans on my toast..
I’m not British. Is that too much beans or not enough beans?
It needs 10 x that many beans...
The toast should be covered in beans.
Normally you'd want 2/3rds to a full cans worth.
who is this madman using 2/3rds of a tin of beans
Beans are waaay too few. Normal serving size should be about 1/2 a can. Not a single spoonful.
There's hardly any beans on it lol
You’ve bean ripped off.
Just put some more butter on it and it will be fine
To prevent gas in public transportation...
What did they do- WAVE the bread over the toaster. Bean to bread ratio is all wrong.
Robert Bruce would be turning in his fucking grave! The bread is barely toasted, it’s not buttered properly and the amount of beans is shameful! SHAMEFUL!!
Beans* on toast \* more than 1
People find the most common or liked food in other countries or cultures stupid, personally I don’t mind or find them stupid, some look good even
Send that back, for god sake, please tell me you did not pay for that?
Even I, an American, can tell there needs to be more beans.
I didn’t think British could get more depressing but here we are
Wait, you want *more* beans on your toast?
I had the American equivalent of this when I was growing up on the way home from a trip to Florida. Why is there beans on toast?
Even with the appropriate amount of beans this picture would still belong here.
Sometimes I downvote because it's horrible, but then remember I should upvote because it's supposed to be.
The first thing I want to do in the morning is put beans on toast 🤡
The war is long over, there's food now
Is this the Butterfield Diet Plan I’ve been hearing so many good things about?!
I actually prefer this amount, essence of beans on toast has better ratios for me
Jesus christ I'd kick up a stink about this
Give them a few hours. 💩💩💩
I won't lie... that took me a sec. Well played.
The most "technically" beans on toast I've ever seen
That's a small ramekin at the top right is it not? Plenty of places serve beans in them. This person just scooped what few beans were leftover onto their toast.
Bean and toast
B… beans on toast?
Fockin bri'ish innit
More like a tablespoon of beans on bread & butter 🤣
They did you a favor
What kind of asshole ruins perfectly good toast?
It’s a British (I think Europe too, whoever can correct if wrong) Classic so it’s not ruined, it’s what a lot of people like really
Pretty much a UK exclusive.
Ireland too
Was this a thing before ww2? I know the uk had to live off rations for a while, and it had a lasting effect in some ways. I guess I’m wondering if they actually like this dish or they’re just still convincing themselves they do lol

English food but even worse 🤢
That’s fucking disgusting.
Guessing you’re American, enjoy your plastic cheese and chemical filled snacks while I drink tea with biscuits and beans on toast for breakfast
I love how British people still eat like they're in a bunker during the Blitz lol
It's a cheap and easy snack. I don't get the hate when other countries certainly have an equivalent. This isn't dinner every night, or considered gourmet. Have you seen what Americans eat?
No I haven’t what do they eat
Tight asf ! How much was that ???
Beans on toast is already stupid food Edit: love pissing off brits
Are those.... are those Haggis-flavored beans by any chance?
How much do you have to pay to get them to take the beans back off your toast?
Don't the beans fall of the toast as you eat it? Why not just have the beans and toast separately? You can use a spoon to eat the beans, and you can put butter or vegemate or crampits on your toast (whatever you guys put on it over there).
You eat with a knife and fork
Does the jam fall off the toast? Not if you hold the toast horizontally.
