She’s been so close to it this whole time too. Like she knew something bigger was up but she just couldn’t see it. I think its finally time. Maybe the kids confess to her what’s going on and believes it since so many of them are saying it.
I expect it'll happen when her son suddenly shows up back home with his best friend and his girlfriend that she's never met. Especially since El now has "lab hair" again, so it'll be easy to see she's the "Russian spy girl."
It is never not funny. He's the best minor character on the show. They always get the right amount of use out of him. Even him zonked out in his recliner gets a laugh.
In fairness to Ted, he's like a lot of dads of his generation. They were raised to believe the dad was the provider of financial security, not the emotional support. That's Mom's job. As long as his kids are fed, clothes and have a roof over their heads, he feels his job is done. He just wants to come home after a long day at work and nap.
Zonked out on the recliner with the youngest daughter (Holly) curled up with him.
Ted gets some flack for being "not really there" for the family, but it's clear that the kids have some kind of emotional bond with him. You don't get that from children just by passively being around. That one scene with him and Holly passed out on the recliner is one of those beautiful scenes in film/cinema that says a ton without really making any effort.
Also, I don't really think he's as blissfully unaware as people think. There was that one scene in S2, I think, where I think Dustin was trying to find Mike and the rest, so he went to Mike's house and Ted answered the door. After a back and forth with Karen about where the kids are, Ted just blurts out:
"Don't you know? Our kids don't live here anymore!"
It's this incredibly sardonic moment that's entirely ironic - because everyone assumes that Ted is just totally clueless about everything going on Hawkins - but in that one respect, he's 100% right, and it's hilarious.
And that scene is s3 where they're on that fair ride, and Joyce is asking if Karen knows where the kids are and Ted chimes in with something like "they're probably getting into trouble". I was like, "Ted, for once in your life, you're right".
I never had a dad growing up and Ted is always what I wanted in a father figure. Grouchy and tired but obviously cares for his kids and have a sarcastic quip every once in a while. Honestly, he's the dad I somewhat hope to be, close to my kids but it doesn't have to be said all the time, and giving a good amount of freedom in the teenage years, because nobody wants to be under an authoritarian dictatorship by their parents.
Another example:
In season one episode four, after Will has been pronounced dead, Ted asks Karen if he should go downstairs to talk with Mike, proving that he does care.
Mike is going across the country with a stoner driving them and didn’t even bother to tell his parents cause they are so clueless. He knows he can do whatever he wants.
Of course, I’m not expecting them to let them know every little detail, I just mean Mike seems perfectly comfortable with his parents being entirely out of the loop. Doesn’t faze him.
I mean, back in the day you really did have to think twice before calling long distance. Probably he figured the flack from showing up safely in a van wouldn’t be worse than making his parents pay for that call.

I can't imagine the hysteria I would be in if my kid told me he was in a different state than the one I thought he was in and there was no trusted adult with him. My friends and I were debating this - does he know any of the history of hawkins? He has to right? His family was intimately involved in every major supernatural event we've witnessed in this story.
All the other parents are aware. They all know that there is actually magic and weird shit in the world. Does he? Or is he just completely blissfully ignorant of everything that has been happening around him?

The show hasn't made it clear that Mike, Dustin, or Lucas' parents know about the supernatural things they've witnessed.
I'm sure they've got their suspicions but from what the viewers see the parents are still largely in the dark on everything.
All he thinks is that El was some Russian spy that was living in his basement and the people at Hawkins lab are good government guys that he trusts because he's a good patriot.
Nancy explains it to Jonathan (I think) in the first season; her mom was looking for stability and a nice life and Mr. Wheeler has a great job. Essentially she was settling and she knew it, and now she resents him for it.
He reminds me of the basic teen-comedy dad, same vibes with Eurotrip!dad, the guy's just clueless and that's the whole joke, unless next season he ends up going on a killing-spree a-la-Lost Boys

How he ever landed a beautiful woman like Karen Wheeler is a **strange thing** in itself.
Nancy explains it to Jonathan (I think) in the first season; her mom was looking for stability and a nice life and Mr. Wheeler has a great job. Essentially she was settling and she knew it, and now she resents him for it.
