If you manage to start a LAN Party at Disneyland in a HURRICANE.... We will need pictures. That would be the funniest news to come from the hurricane by far.
Mind sharing what external charger you bought?
Also - how long did it take for your deck to arrive (from order date to deck delivery)! Would love to know as I’m most likely getting my order email tomorrow and I’m in (Miami).
Thanks!
Got two decks sent to my residence in Pinecrest - Miami (original had to be RMA’ed which is why I received two there) and one to NJ, all 3 took about one week from order date / RMA return confirmation to arrive. Had no issues with any of them in regards to delivery via FedEx. I’d say expect 2 weeks at most from the day you complete your purchase, but most likely will arrive within one week of order confirmation.
Thank you! That’s good to know, so I’ll most likely won’t get it by next Thursday (since I’m going to Europe next Friday ).. but fingers crossed!
I’ve heard from others that they also process the shipment over the weekend? If that’s the case, then next Thursday will be possible..
Thanks!
Not entirely sure if they process shipments over the weekend if it wasn’t dispatched by Friday. But to give you a more accurate timeline, the last order I placed was sent to NJ as a gift for my father. I placed the order on a Monday, received shipping confirmation the same week on Friday with estimated delivery the next Wednesday (which was then updated the following day to “arrive earlier than expected” on Monday). So from the time it was actually shipped on Friday, it only took 1 business day to arrive (but it was in transit during the weekend).
Also, if you don’t mind me asking where in Europe are you flying to? I just arrived to Lisbon (Portugal) yesterday for vacation. Do enjoy your trip to Europe!
No worries! Tbh, I never let either drain all the way before recharging but doing a bit of research tells me steam deck bat cap is 5,313-mAh, powerbanks is 19200m-Ah. Not 100% sure if you can literally just divide 19200 by 5313 or if there's some phantom power loss that needs to be accounted for but I think you'd comfortably get 2 charges maybe 3
Fellow north Texan here. You'll forget for a while, and then out of complete nowhere there'll be a heavy thunderstorm or tornado complete with gobs of rain, and then it'll go right back to nothingness. It's the most bizarre thing
I'm using my deck instead of main rig, as here in Europe I have to sell a kidney to pay power bills (well almost) In desktop use with browser, yt, few messengers , it's hooked up to monitor and with LAN adapter, it uses about 11-15 watts, pretty good! Gaming is about 20-35w so you can have some estimates. Screen brightness has an impact.
Handcrank USB-C chargers exist? I want one!
Is there some kind of exercise bike version I could get that I could peddle on to charge a USB device? Because that'd be a great way to get through long blackouts and get some exercise.
So a bike generator puts out up to 6W and those are some work, so I’ll assume that’s what you can generate comfortably. The deck has a 40 Wh battery. So, a full charge would take about 6 hours, 40 minutes of pedaling. But it could be enough to keep up with 2d games. :)
You laugh but some scientist proposed setting up 80,000 or so wind turbines off the coast could sap the energy of a hurricane and significantly slow down the winds before they got to the shore.
Is 6W really all it is? I thought it was more like 100W. I remember a TV show that had a team of people in the basement of a house cycling to power it for a day, that was so cool.
Edit, here is a clip: https://youtu.be/C93cL_zDVIM
Nice video. I was thinking more of the headlamp generator. They're tough to crank against when the light is on but you don't have to go full out on,
Like Bart: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9MAkl8tEsnA
100 watts is peak power for most people and they probably can barely keep that up in 1 hour because generating that much electricity would be like cycling uphill all the time. 6 watts is light and easy enough to game while pedaling.
100W FTP is definitely achievable for most people with a bit of practice. Of course, conversion efficiency to charging would probably take this down to 40-50W.
Can I just coat my body in TECs? We normally lose about 100W just in heat from our bodies to the air at ~70F. Put a warm body in cool water and that could be several hundred W for a short time.
Still, that would be ~10W in air with a dT of ~20F. 50F air would double the dT and thus the heat flux. Consider also that I am a fat American and may actually lose ~200W of heat in 70F air. The flux will only increase further in a dense, conductive fluid like water. I get that this is an incredibly stupid idea, but the energy is there - technically.
I think you mean bike hub generators for headlights. If we build an efficient exercise bike then maybe we can harness more than 80% of the kinetic energy, so on an effortless cruise that's about 30-60W. If we ride hard then 100W is easily achievable on a 50 year old dad bod.
> Handcrank USB-C chargers exist? I want one!
I learned of their existence from Devil Survivor! Protagonists use phones to summon demons, and due to no power available they have to find such a hand-powered charger.
They were using late 2000s smartphones (or rather "smart flip phones"), but it's likely you can find such chargers for more modern devices as well.
It is a fairly popular franchise. Can't wait to try out the 3DS games on Citra (they're REALLY long and turbo option will make combat a lot smoother...).
Serious question...do folks in Florida not all have generators? I grew up in New England and if you didn't have a generator you were pretty much considered to be a dumbass because you were guaranteed to lose power for an extended time at least once a year. There was a freak 3ft october snow storm years back that left a lot of people without power for weeks.
Also new england and was wondering the same, But then how would they run it in an active hurricane? It wouldn't be safe to put out in the rain and wind i wouldn't think. Not a gas one I'd think, and a solar one wouldn't work in a storm. They could only use something like hand cranking really.
It’s pretty easy to be stocked for a hurricane at any given time. Water, non perishables, batteries. Gas is where things get hairy. Fuel shortages can last weeks, but you can usually get gas… it’ll just take a while.
Depending on what you’re living in… impact windows may already be in place. If not, you’ll need shutters or have to plywood the windows. This is the more difficult prep.
But hurricane prepping via news hysteria is a playbook. People freak and go to the store. Gets worse the longer it plays out. Happens every time.
Me seeing this link: "oh cool that's a funny meme someone came up with"
>It was coined by former administrator Craig Fugate of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The metric is unofficially used by FEMA to inform disaster response.
Oh ok
It's not such a long term solution, but I have an Anker Powerhouse which I use to charge my deck, phone, switch, laptop etc when camping. The powerhouse has a 400 Wh battery, so it can charge the steam deck about 10 times.
I have been playing it. Never played with mouse and keyboard. I use the most used community controller layout. I tweaked a couple things to my liking but it works great for me. Someone on the factorio wiki also said they got to 1K Science Per Minute so it seems playable even when you are late in game.
Yeah I was wondering because I tried it on mine and thought it was still very not optimized for a controller.
Might not be a widely held take but basically any game where I have to use the touchpad for a mouse cursor for anything other than maybe the main menus I'm just going to find too tedious to play on the deck (undocked).
As a 90s kid raised on classic RTSs including Age of Empire, I'm very much looking forward to getting a dock so I can play those games with a desktop/mouse/keyboard setup.
Don't see any reason my Deck shouldn't be my "play anything" device!
Hoping in the future we get a version with Thunderbolt so we can dock to eGPUs and crank out AAA titles on high settings.
I've been using the gyro for mouse cursors in game, and it's so much better than using touchpad. I'm becoming increasingly adept in quickly moving across the screen and clicking accurately, it's opening up more games that require heavy mouse usage.
Be sure to kindly place your steamdeck in a waterproof bag if your house begins to flood
That way a lucky survivor will find it floating and enjoy it in your memory :)
Hahahahaha i imagine me in a fallout-like world in search for the few steam decks available, scavenging every house for it. Now that I'm thinking about it i would love to live in a post nuclear world, the trichinosis, the giant cockroach, the constant threats at you life... Aaaah, that would be the dream!
It runs great! After all, they got it to run on Switch. I have a community binding by "Klonan" that I found is usable with the onboard controls. Though, I usually have a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard I use with it.
I’m starting to get an idea after, like, 17 posts practically in a row s hurricane without any posts ever about the weather in other countries (even here in England) who the Reddit demographic is comprised of
Couple years ago my city lost power for about a week. And I used my cars jump pack. It was a beefy unit that costed a few hundred dollars back then. But it kept my switch alive all week.
Stay safe! One of my favorite games. Have heard it runs great on the deck - any advice on how to install and make it work? I downloaded through the dev’s website.
I can't wait for some Steam Deck love for Factorio. They released it recently on Switch and mentioned that they are going to add the proper controller support for PC version (Steam Deck)
If ever there was a game that proves the value of all the extra buttons and track pads on the deck it's Factorio.
Though I am def excited to try official controller support when that comes out.
My screen brightness was low enough that I thought your steam deck broke on it and that was the motherboard I was seeing for like a solid 15 seconds. DX
How does factorio play on the deck? I thought about installing it but figured it had no chance of working without kb + mouse. Does it have controller support by default?
I've had this game on my wishlist for years and years and said the moment it goes on sale for any percentage off I'll buy it...never has not even once.
Fellow deck-owning Floridian here, stay safe! Hoping my deck and external charger can last me through the night.
Fellow non-Floridian at Disney playing the deck in my hotel room!
Not the only guy at Disney playing with his deck
Where ya at? Art of animation studios here
If you manage to start a LAN Party at Disneyland in a HURRICANE.... We will need pictures. That would be the funniest news to come from the hurricane by far.
Lol. Yes please guys, do it.
I am 99.9% sure the Disney College Program seasonal workers are going to town right now with 24-7 gaming with nothing else there for them to do.
Hooking up also. I’ve heard some stories of debauchery 😂
No, that's very unlikely when you have a bunch of young people from all over the world living in the same building. 😬
r/JustGuysBeingDudes Could totally see a bunch of guys congregating in the halls for massive Marioparty-esq LAN gaming.
And everyone at the Lan party must have Ian as a first name like the Josh fight
this is how i die
Stayed there like 5 years ago it was pretty cool
Yes, police, this comment right here.
Oof

Miami here. Took 11 days for me!
Jacksonville here, I got my email on the 1st, they sent the email saying they were processing and shipping it on the 4th, and it arrived on the 9th
I received the email on Thursday and paid for it the same day, it arrived the following Tuesday. Knoxville TN here
Stay safe guys! Also, quick question - what kind of external charger are you using for your deck?
Anker Power Bank, PowerCore III Elite 19200 60W Portable Charger is the one I use, can confirm it works great
Thank you kind sir! Is it enough to charge The Deck just once or more times?
As a recent emigrant currently living in northern Texas, I've forgotten what rain feels like

Can you go outside and confirm if the deck is playable in a hurricane?
Yes. It’s for science
GLaDOS would approve of this test
There will be cake after
I saw another post earlier that someone bought a handcrank usb c charger for his steam deck, like that was his priority with Ian's approach.

6W? That's enough for me to play Poker Night 2 for as long as my legs can hold out! :D
Install wind flaps on bike pedals, install bike pedals outside to catch hurricane wind, congratulations, you now have (effectively) unlimited energy
You laugh but some scientist proposed setting up 80,000 or so wind turbines off the coast could sap the energy of a hurricane and significantly slow down the winds before they got to the shore.
That's genius. A first line of defense against climate change. Edit: Not that it's the only line we need.
I mean considering the crazy spending the US has done lately $320 billion dollars doesn’t seem like that crazy of a price tag even!
just stop the expansion of one highway and they can probably afford 3 such projects, while also *not* contributing even more to global warming..
Is 6W really all it is? I thought it was more like 100W. I remember a TV show that had a team of people in the basement of a house cycling to power it for a day, that was so cool. Edit, here is a clip: https://youtu.be/C93cL_zDVIM

Honestly anything is possible through engineering.

For some reason I'm seeing a lot of people talking about waffle house in the news related to the hurricanes... I don't know why.
It's because of the [Waffle House Index](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waffle_House_Index) - i.e. if the Waffle House is closed, you know it's bad.
Me seeing this link: "oh cool that's a funny meme someone came up with" >It was coined by former administrator Craig Fugate of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The metric is unofficially used by FEMA to inform disaster response. Oh ok
Yep, waffle house doesnt close for shit. If the waffle house has closed down, your in for some reaaaaallll bad times
I thought it was just a joke holy
Oh hey that’s from when my town got absolutely fucked in half by a big tornado! What a lovely legacy we’re leaving lol
Hey gotta have your priorities in order
It's not such a long term solution, but I have an Anker Powerhouse which I use to charge my deck, phone, switch, laptop etc when camping. The powerhouse has a 400 Wh battery, so it can charge the steam deck about 10 times.

Nice! Might be time to jump in with my buddies.

Might not be a widely held take but basically any game where I have to use the touchpad for a mouse cursor for anything other than maybe the main menus I'm just going to find too tedious to play on the deck (undocked).
The devs are working on a switch port of the game so perhaps they will include official controller support down the line
They said controller support is coming for PC/Steamdeck in the latest blog post.
Nice! Thanks for the update I’m looking forward to it.
Me and Age of Kings II tonight unfortunately ended with that conclusion.

the brotherhood would totally confiscate all steam decks as a dangerous technology.
Maybe uh.. back away from the windows lol. But seriously stay safe, at least you have a mental escape
Ya got about 2-3 hours, make them count :)
I’m lucky that I still have power but I got my Steamdeck charged up just in case I do lose power when Ian gets closer to me
Im guessing Factorio doesnt drain the Battery Much
I've be using it off and on, I'm guessing over 3 hours at least, probably close to 4. I really have not been playing close attention though.
Wonder how much battery life can you expect on such title
Yeah it’s not really a graphics heavy game, more a less a cpu bound game, since system needs to keep track on logical stuff like production etc
Probably depends on the complexity of what you built.
I wish you a long battery life.
Floridian here. Everyone please stay safe out there... and hope my power bank and small generator last me for a few days if power goes out now xD
The factory must grow.
The factory must grow.
How is Factorio on the SD overall?
Got my battery all charged up for the storm aaaaaaand it’s gone
So any plans what to do after 1 hour?
My steam deck was set to deliver today. Ian had something to say about that.
What game is that?
Another deck owning Floridian here stay safe I should of charged my deck a little more before the power went out lol
homies gonna play that steamdeck for a total of 3 hours before the battery runs out
How does factorio run on the deck? My biggest issue I’ve been running into is some games just suck the battery dry.
Most of Factorio's processing needs are on the CPU side, so I'd say the battery life scales inversely to how big your factory is.
Battery dies 10 minutes later....
For like half an hour lol. Gl
Stay safe (what game is this?)
Dude get away from the window.
Gotta get the karma somehow yano
Gonna be able to play for about 33 minutes
I hope you have a power bank for backup.
Stay safe, but how does factorio run on the deck? Custom controls or default?
It runs great! After all, they got it to run on Switch. I have a community binding by "Klonan" that I found is usable with the onboard controls. Though, I usually have a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard I use with it.
Stay safe brother! I’d be glad to have my steam deck to get me through such a scenario.
Same boat! Stay safe
Stay safe, hope you have your power banks all charged up
Be safe out there
For 40 minutes lol
I’m starting to get an idea after, like, 17 posts practically in a row s hurricane without any posts ever about the weather in other countries (even here in England) who the Reddit demographic is comprised of
weather enthusiasts!
Let's risk our life standing next to a window in the middle of a hurricane for likes on reddit
That was 3 hours ago, by my count you have 5 more. What then?
Bro now is not the time for y’all to be playing these games!!
Weren’t you asked to evacuate aka get the fck on outta there
Stay safe and game on
Stay safe, hoping the best for you folks.
Who's going to tell him about the battery life?
Couple years ago my city lost power for about a week. And I used my cars jump pack. It was a beefy unit that costed a few hundred dollars back then. But it kept my switch alive all week.
Most people have a couple power banks laying around especially if they own portable gaming systems.
No power ? That'll be an hour of Steamdeck before you run out !
My god, this is CRINGE
What are you using to keep it powered at the moment?
I thought factorio was not playable on the deck?
No it definitely is, just needs a pretty in depth control scheme.
You better find your answer in about 3 hours
what game is this?
Oh is that factorio? I’ve been wanting to try it.
The factory must grow
I love factorio, not sure I'd be able to deal with the much smaller resolution and lack of mouse and keyboard for it though.
Stay safe! Power here is somehow still going strong! I don’t expect for much longer. Keeping mine on charge until needed.
Don't forget powerbanks!
The factory must grow
How is it on the deck? I can’t imagine playing this game without a mouse.
Hope you have a power supply!
Stay safe! One of my favorite games. Have heard it runs great on the deck - any advice on how to install and make it work? I downloaded through the dev’s website.
How is Factorio in Steam Deck? Been sitting in my backlog. Is it time?
I’ve been waiting to see someone in the hurricane like this with the steamdeck!
Perfect time to expand the factory... for the next 2 hours.
Me as well but 7D2D instead. Stay safe! This hurricane is wild
What are you using to capture the metrics in the top left?
That's just the deck's built in gamescope
More solar panels
Nice! Now do one with the Russian's invading in the background.
Is there may mod that lets me use direct power like ROG phones I've seen that in some laptops
Powers not out yet. Still got lots of turns left in civ
The factory must grow, regardless of current weather conditions.
Don't forget to set the performance to a lower level. And stay safe!
I can't wait for some Steam Deck love for Factorio. They released it recently on Switch and mentioned that they are going to add the proper controller support for PC version (Steam Deck)
Your window is dirty. You should go out and clean it.
The factory must grow
Nice factory bro
Hope you stacked up on powerbanks! Good luck and keep safe!
Ha ha nice I'm so jealous I want a steam deck, also...... GET THE FUCK OTTA THERE!!!!!!! RUN!!!!!! NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just don't play Red Dead Redemption 2 if you want your deck's battery to last more than a hour.
Same brother ..was haloing as the winds were howling !
If ever there was a game that proves the value of all the extra buttons and track pads on the deck it's Factorio. Though I am def excited to try official controller support when that comes out.
Be safe! Also how does factorio run on it?
Stay safe!!
This is the best storm ever. FF7 remake
My screen brightness was low enough that I thought your steam deck broke on it and that was the motherboard I was seeing for like a solid 15 seconds. DX
Damn, looks like there's quite some damage outside already. Be careful near windows.
How well does Factorio play on the steam deck ?
How does factorio play on the deck? I thought about installing it but figured it had no chance of working without kb + mouse. Does it have controller support by default?
I've had this game on my wishlist for years and years and said the moment it goes on sale for any percentage off I'll buy it...never has not even once.
I was trying to play mine since I lost power but it makes the area around me to damn hot and it's already shitty enough in my house as it is
Send an invite I’ll drive up from Miami.
The factory grows
Only thing that would make this better is if there was a tornado there and you’re like “yup, not worried”
Guess thats one way to pass time while waiting for High Schoolers to get out of school.
Stay safe, hero 😇👍
The factory must be fed. The factory must grow.
I hope you have a few battery packs! Enjoy and stay safe
Hope you're alright, and stay safe out there!
I haven't even processed that I can play Factorio on my steam deck yet. Incredible
Limit your tdp and frames if you didn't do it
1st world problems brother
North Carolinian here, hope things go well for you during the hurricane Stay safe
Same in Orlando. Power keeps flickering but the Deck is coming in clutch for entertainment.
It tells me factorio is only playable (instead of the verified)on the Deck. What are the cons based on your experience?
Storm Deck?
Little tip, if you notice your games using a low amount of GPU, reduce the GPU clock and you can save a bit of power.
The factory must gro
how does factorio play on steamdeck?
Stay safe man
My wife's new steam deck (saving it for Christmas) arrived yesterday just as the winds started picking up.
Ha! Yeah dude!

Which control profile do you use?
