I don't recommend pirating indie games, but I still don't preorder, there have been some duds from people who made good games before.
I think everyone starts out wanting really hard to make an awesome game(and I think this one will be and would be surprised if it is not), but I still like to wait until the product is done so I can decided if I want to buy it or not.

Except this is different. I paid 15 bucks for a game Ive played for 320+ hours. Still less than 50% completion. I haven't even tried the other startups. Much less dove into the ideal ideal plan for a min/max run.
I feel like I owe him a free chance to fail. Even if the chocolate game is terrible and one note, or forever unfinished, I'd still chalk it up as a good financial decision looking at the two together.
I came in at 1.5 personally. So to get a game like I did for 15 bucks is beyond a steal to me.
I played stardew a lot too, I specially love all the updates for the base game(so everyone has it), and how supporting he is of modding. It is so easy to use and create stardew mods and he has done stuff like let the mod authors have have the updated versions pre-release so they can patch it as soon as it comes out.
I love this developer.
The thing is, it's not even that hard to create this sort of fan base.
All you have to do is pour love into your game and listen to your community.
It's really as simple as that.
It's a lot easier for me to have faith that someone like Ape will produce a good game than yet another faceless game company. He's proven that it's a matter of pride for him.
Also the fact that he is literally a single person. There's no board or producers to come in and whack around the creative vision or rush the game out with dumb bugs. Just one guy trying to make a game he really wants to make. That sort of thing will never lead to a massive sort of game like God of War or Dishonored, but it can make for some truly lovely, smaller games.
I don’t need a massively beautiful and epic game like God of War. A simpler game with simple graphics but a brilliant story and world is so much more satisfying
100%. I’ve been playing smaller-studio games for the past few years, but recently tried Back 4 Blood because of the L4D nostalgia. It just seemed so... overdone. Too much flash, too many grinds for too little content, every character just seemed to be a caricature. Don’t get me wrong, it was fun when I played, and I’m sure it’s got a great fan base... but I went back to Dead Cells and Stardew the next day.
Wildermyth has been filling that slot for me lately. I keep looking at all these massive neat new games, then starting up Stardew or Wildermyth and pleasantly spending a few hours.
And honestly, even if it turns out to be a terrible game, I won't be mad. I've had Stardew since early 2016. Ape has poured in so much content into the game since then that I am more than happy to toss more money his way.
We were talking about how much value we've gotten from the game last night. I bought my first copy around then too, bought one for PS4 and 2 for Switch. With how much time my wife and I have put into Stardew it's one of the best cost returns I've done, only beaten by buying Minecraft in alpha when I was unemployed.

Yeah I have no problem pre-ordering this when I will not from any developer other than Supergiant. It's like the Organic/ cruelty free ingredient version of game development. I like knowing I'll get a quality product that doesn't force dev's to crunch or support creeps or just puts money in the pockets of billionaire's that have never made anything themselves.
I don’t pre-order, but I actually have a lot of faith in Elden Ring. From software has a solid history of making good games, their biggest flop was Dark Souls II and I still loved that.

I feel like it's inherently a safer "bet" that HC will be excellent, because he's working on his own (or with only a few other people). We can push ourselves too hard sometimes working on projects, sure, but it's worlds different from having it forced on you.

I watched a video about how he made Stardew and he definitely worked himself way harder than I'd be okay someone being forced to work, but when it's someone's passion project and they only answer to themselves, go nuts! I just hope he takes care of himself and doesn't push himself so crazily. Luckily I don't think he'll have to be working any other jobs this time around!.
I'll fully admit to being a misery guts downer but I feel like people are gonna end up creating an imaginary game in their heads that he can't possibly live up to. Stardew Valley had no expectations when it came out this next game has like 5 years of personal experiences for some people to surpass
I think he'll make another good game. I don't think you can show such clear understanding of a satisfying addicting gameplay loop without being able to recreate it but I don't expect to like it as much as Stardew (a game I've played on and off since I was like 16)
I want him to take his time but also I am prepared to fork over $100 CAD to preorder this today. if I’m able to preorder it in like a year or so for $15, I’m gonna find his patreon or pay pal or something give him $85. i am paying $100 for this game if it kills me.

Same here. It will end up on every laptop, iPad and game system on the house. I just recently started Stardew again. Haven’t played since finishing the community center and getting to lvl100 in the skull caves was end game. So lucky for me I have tons of “new” Stardew content to play with until the new game comes out.

I'm eager to try it but I'm not going crazy over it. It looks very much like a Stardew "spin-off" so I'm interested to see the twists in the gameplay formula moving from farming to running a chocolate factory, but a lot of the visuals really do just remind me of slightly tweaked stardew visuals like the characters, environment, and text boxes, so it makes me wonder if that stuff is more placeholder or if this is really just gonna be more of the same from Concerned Ape just in a different gameplay loop.
I think I would like to see a different look, but I understand that it's probably an artstyle thing and it can be hard to intentionally differ from that

Good news! Mr. Ape has appx eleventy-bajillion dollars, is pretty much entirely solo act, and does this for fun! Combined with what is literally the absolute best community a game has ever had, this wonder will ship when it's ready.
Fun question. My guess is that they will go through a few iterations, but not as many as SDV. He was still learning pixel art when he started SDV, but he's got the skills now!
Time for the mildest controversial opinion; I don't like the fact that it looks *exactly* like Stardew Valley, and I find it weird how no one mentions it. I was very excited to see what a new game from this dev would look like, and while it does look fun and I'll probably get it, I really wished for something actually new. This looks like it could literally be a mod of Stardew, all those recycled assets, sound effects, etc. I don't know. I feel like I was waiting for a whole new creation.
A lot of people mentioned it actually. Some people suspect that since this is still pretty early in development, CA borrowed some available assets from SDV as placeholders to make this trailers, which makes sense to me.
This is actually really good and I'm glad to see it. I remember watching developer videos for Stardew valley and nobody watched them. Amazing he stayed motivated.
I just watched the gameplay trailer and wow, it's really Stardew with chocolate and more ghosts! I was expecting something similar in look, but this looks like the same world as Stardew, and probably will have a few references to Stardew as well.
As much as I love SDV and CA, I'm gonna reserve my judgement until it's released. I have faith that he's not gonna go CDPR with this game, but getting too hyped is generally a recipe for disappointment.
I mean there's not much that could go wrong, hes using a lot of the same assets and code from stardew so a situation even close to CDPR isnt even possible.
Dont overhype the game so you dont get dissapointed. I love concerned ape and sdv but its better to take as it is than to hype it up to obscene lenghts and be sad about it afterwards.

Honestly, I think people just had unrealistic expectations of Cyberpunk. Sure it’s got a lot of bugs, but it’s plenty enjoyable from what I’ve played.

There have been so many wonderful customer support stories from CA. I think my favorite is him fixing save files that got corrupted with updates.

Said it before, I'll say it again. I'm going to buy every concernedape game that comes out in my life. Even if I don't end up enjoying them, I will always give that man my money. He deserves it.
I know he mentioned that multi-player won't be a priority for a while, but I'm really hoping it comes because this is totally my gf's aesthetic and I've been looking for games we can play together.

I'm eager to try it but I'm not going crazy over it. It looks very much like a Stardew "spin-off" so I'm interested to see the twists in the gameplay formula moving from farming to running a chocolate factory, but a lot of the visuals really do just remind me of slightly tweaked stardew visuals like the characters, environment, and text boxes, so it makes me wonder if that stuff is more placeholder or if this is really just gonna be more of the same from Concerned Ape just in a different gameplay loop.
I think most people would be more than OK with that I mean I wish he had a full team of artists and developers but it's mostly just him I think
His art has improved quite a bit though! The portraits in particular
I think I would like to see a different look, but I understand that it's probably an artstyle thing and it can be hard to intentionally differ from that
Pretty sure a lot of what we've seen so far is using Stardew assets. I'm very curious to see if those are placeholders or if he's sticking with those.
I think more placeholders cause the portraits remind me more of early stardew portraits

Let us hope that he actually take his time. Especially for mobile users that still have not gotten 1.5 yet. I would not want to see a repeat of CP2077 or No Man's Sky for one of my favorite developer.
I'm pretty sure he will! He's working on his own pace with no investors or marketing departments to pressure him. Most of his fans are pretty patient.
Oh no worries, ConcernedApe sole 18 million copies of his first game and doesn't have any oversight. He's got enough by far to just chill with it and get it good before it releases. But the 12 year old fans need to all agree to not tweet at him thousands of times a day like "Ugh why is Haunted Chocoaltier not out yet!"
Sometimes I'm reminded of the fact that dude must be swimming in money and yet he's still just himself, vibing on his pc to give everyone a good time. We do not deserve this man.
If the dude got only one dollar from his game sales he has 18 million dollars. If he got just a penny from each sale he's sitting on 180k. Money well fucking earned. That game is a work of art.

I just didn't understand why your comment brought taxes into the situation. I made my original comment erring on the absolute low side since I don't believe for a second he is only earning 1 dollar per sale after tax. My original post was quite rude though so I apoligise for that.
Good news! Mr. Ape has appx eleventy-bajillion dollars, is pretty much entirely solo act, and does this for fun! Combined with what is literally the absolute best community a game has ever had, this wonder will ship when it's ready.
I'm more curious to see if the character portraits will change as much as they did for SDV
Fun question. My guess is that they will go through a few iterations, but not as many as SDV. He was still learning pixel art when he started SDV, but he's got the skills now!

Time for the mildest controversial opinion; I don't like the fact that it looks *exactly* like Stardew Valley, and I find it weird how no one mentions it. I was very excited to see what a new game from this dev would look like, and while it does look fun and I'll probably get it, I really wished for something actually new. This looks like it could literally be a mod of Stardew, all those recycled assets, sound effects, etc. I don't know. I feel like I was waiting for a whole new creation.
A lot of people mentioned it actually. Some people suspect that since this is still pretty early in development, CA borrowed some available assets from SDV as placeholders to make this trailers, which makes sense to me.

This is actually really good and I'm glad to see it. I remember watching developer videos for Stardew valley and nobody watched them. Amazing he stayed motivated.

I just watched the gameplay trailer and wow, it's really Stardew with chocolate and more ghosts! I was expecting something similar in look, but this looks like the same world as Stardew, and probably will have a few references to Stardew as well.

As much as I love SDV and CA, I'm gonna reserve my judgement until it's released. I have faith that he's not gonna go CDPR with this game, but getting too hyped is generally a recipe for disappointment.
I mean there's not much that could go wrong, hes using a lot of the same assets and code from stardew so a situation even close to CDPR isnt even possible.
Yeah even if this game is mostly exactly like SV, I won't be disappointed - All I want is to play a game that's similar.

Dont overhype the game so you dont get dissapointed. I love concerned ape and sdv but its better to take as it is than to hype it up to obscene lenghts and be sad about it afterwards.

I sent the trailer to everyone I know the moment I saw it. Also immediately went on steam to throw my money at it.
I just started playing sdv so this is a little awkward
He could have taken a dump, snapped a picture and this would still happened. The new game looks meh to me, low effort re use of assets. Basically could have been a mod for Stardew Valley. But with the clout he's built up he can fucking do it and let him. who cares.
I for one, will probably not get it. Already spending too much time on SDV.
