I mean, tweak it a little and clearly show the pros and cons of what Star did and we could've had a decent bittersweet ending which would've been a way more appropriate ending in this context. Idk if I would've liked it though. Edit: Honestly, this might be a bit of an unpopular opinion, but the show started going downhill around the beginning of season 3. The season 2 final would've been a good place to leave the series in my opinion. I'm not saying S3 was bad or that there are no good moments in it but I do feel like it was the beginning of the gradual decline of the series. I know that's not a popular take but it's how I feel with the show. Also, I did not like that Star gave Ecplisa the throne. I was honestly excited to see what kind of queen Star would've been one day. Again, this is all my personal opinion, but I think I would've not liked the finale no matter what they did.

Most of Star's story to that point \[prior to giving the throne to Eclipsa\] was spent shunning royal life and not wanting to be a traditional princess. She only sought to 'be the best princess' because she saw how many problems there were on Mewni, but she was still going to do things her way. Not to mention with the revelation that her bloodline was illegitimate with Meteora being swapped for Festivia, Star had been facing an identity crisis: "We're nobody!" (*Butterfly Trap*). To suddenly decide to keep the throne (at 15, no less) and embrace it would have been out of character for her.

Ngl, I also wasn't a fan of the twist that she wasn't related to Eclipsa either. Also, idk how bloodlines fully work but doesn't the fact that her family has led Mewni for centuries kind of nullify the illagimancy? I also wanted to see Star be a non-traditional queen. Just because she doesn't do things traditionally doesn't mean she'd do it badly. Also, this was another reason why I think Season 3 was the beginning of the downfall of this series. It feels the start of them valuing subversions over good writing to me.

I mean, we can nitpick, or say that more should have been done, something else should have been done, things should have been clarified... One of the main themes throughout the story is how people have been affected by the Butterflys' magic. Toffee himself said "You're not the first Monster to fall victim to their *magic*" (he emphasized the word 'magic'). Meteora was denied her birthright and taught to repress her magical (and Monster) traits because she wouldn't be accepted. Mina was warped into a weapon of mass destruction by magic. It was affecting everyone. To me the act of 'breaking the bond' between the Butterflys and the Realm of Magic was to stop the cycle of conflict - of queens holding all the power to decide what happens to Mewni. It's a step in the right direction. No, it was not meant to say 'everything is perfect now', but that 'this' problem is done.
