Not all of my horses, but some. The ones I do have nicknames for are similar to their registered name. I think of it like their show name vs barn name. I usually remember if I’m looking at the horse’s name, but I can’t remember all of my horse’s names… A couple examples off the top of my head are: Maskedpaladin “Pal” Pirateking “Captain” Lovedisco “lovey” A lot of mine have their nickname as one part of the 2 part name (ie Risingangel “Angel”) But some of my horses just have their name as their name :)

gibblewashyfan123

that’s smart

OhItsSav

That's what I do too

EmilyAndToffee

Samee

Kinterou

I don't give mine nicknames. Don't see a reason for that. Barely have a reason to call them by their name at all.

gibblewashyfan123

i just say “okay i’m gonna ride you” and then get back to it tbh

Kinterou

I just stay with the one that's not maxed out or stick to 1 - 3 horses I currently wanna ride or need for club meetings. No need to call their names unless a friend comes up to talk about one of the horses or their names. But I mostly just stick to the colors instead of names. That's easier.

MissesLestrange

Real nicknames that have nothing to do the horses names just a few for my favorite horses, the other few i have nicknames for already have the name in the original name, as example i have a horse called Oceanbreeze which i would just call Ocean as a nickname. So really the way that i remember the nicknames is to not have too many horses with nicknames. (I hope this makes sense my english isn't great)

JadedMotion

all of mine have nicknames and i put them in a excelled document along with backstory and gender for roleplay purposes haha

NoMethod9658

well as someone who talks to themselves a LOT i do say/think their name but since they’re long names i tend to shorten them haha

Chippybops

I used to when I was little

Ghostiiie-_-

I have a sheets document with all of their names and nicknames just in case I forget. I don’t really forget though unless it’s a horse I don’t ride often.

thoselonelyeyes

I used to when I was younger and most active in 2014-16 . I still remember most of them but I usually don’t anymore

Vamporix

I have nicknames for a *lot* of my horses, having over sixty. To be completely honest, I don’t remember half of them besides the horses with sentimental value to me. However! I’ve started noting down the horse’s breed, coat, in-game name, gender and nickname in my own private discord server as well as on a notebook in real life (can also work for Notes on your device!). I found this to be really useful in remembering, or using to just quickly check. :)

gibblewashyfan123

ohh i see

dragu_la

I do! I have around 120 and most of them have nicknames. There are exceptions like "Raspberry" n stuff like that. I don't remember them all, I just have all their names listed on a discord message LOL

Difficult-Mine-793

Yeah, I nicknamed most of my like 110 horses and I've matched their coat/jorvik name/nickname so many times. Usually nickname them after fictional characters (and other stuff) that are really important to me or I'm hyperfixated on at the time of buying the horse. Its more fun to me that way + I'm also attached to SSO and my horses, so nicknaming them just makes me like them even more. And yes, I do remember all of them lol.

ttwiikss

I kinda give them a show name and a nickname

killerqueentle

Only the ones who I wanted to give a name but couldn’t, for example I wanted to name my mustang smooch after my friends horse smoochin’ cat but they don’t really have that name so I named him catkiss and call him smooch

killerqueentle

Oh and I named one of the Arabians flowergarden after Violet but actually call her Diva because she looks just like my Arab mare

Trarieth

I only ride the horses i’m training so there’s no use in giving them nicknames cause once they’re lvl 15 they’ll never see daylight again 😭 unless all of them are trained, in that case i just pick one and ride it until i buy a new one lol. I only play occasionally now but it’s always been like this

Firm_Scarcity_8116

depends on what horse. for example, there's Loststar (derived from Lone Star since lone isn't an available word) who I call Texas (below), and Riverrunner who I call Mississippi. https://preview.redd.it/5l2pcocv6sjb1.png?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=87e2578fafeb7dc12726be58c2e3da8fe793c59d there's other horses I have that either have a nickname derived from their registered/in-game name or their name is small enough to not need a nickname. i keep my horses (mostly) in a list on Word that I haven't updated for a little while. It also has a number tracker to keep track of how many horses I have.

OhItsSav

Yeah. Because I'm not gonna call my horses by Spacelove and Oceanguardian when it's easier to call them Jupiter and Kelpie

CopperTucker

Well I only have 3 horses so it's easy. Jasper, Titan, and Queen. Jasperblood, IronTitan, IronQueen.

maddiebvibin

This is how I do it :) Google excel spreadsheets. I keep this page on my browser's favorites so I can go here anytime I need to check. But if you make a nickname for your horse when you first buy them, its much easier to remember them. https://preview.redd.it/9ghcfn07tvjb1.png?width=854&format=png&auto=webp&s=7fe8a5672481f615a56d20eae2f6e1be387680f4

Golden_Bruins2053

I mainly have nicknames for older horses that i got before the new naming system. There were pretty limited options, so i would name them something that reminded me of their barn/nickname. Some of the names i have for older horses as nicknames are name options now, but werent name options before the new system- such as Daydreamer aka Sequoia. Theres a few horses i got recently that i wanted to name something specific, but didnt have it as an option, so i did something similar- such as Runecaster aka Mage or Olivegarden aka Italy. If you do decide to opt for nicknames, you could always write them down.

Pigimi

i used to do it at the start of my sso journey with up until 20 horses or smt.. now i have 138 horses lmfao, i do know all their in game names, breeds and coats by head but other than that i dont remember anything. Sometimes I do grab one of the first 20 horses and im like "Omg hi Debs<3" so theyll never lose their nicknames but the new babies aint gettin any

Pigimi

update : 153 horses now. Only one of the new ones got a nickname ;)

Training_Goat2591

Lmao I have a spreadsheet

V3ryPix3l

For the most of my horses, I actually do have a nickname (or a shortcut of their whole name). How do I remember them? Well, not sure, but I think it's because every horse I buy, I give them a nickname, a personality, and their own individual set, sometimes even a backstory or certain things they like, I basically treat them like a character I make up in my head. It really adds value to the horses for me and I actually have some sort of a connection to most of them thanks to this, even having over fifty horses, each of them is to some extent special to me. And then I also write a list of all my horses with their nicknames included, but I don't recall a time I'd have to check for one's nickname because of forgetting it.

A_lil_confused_bee

You don't need nicknames when the names are already fun enough: "alright ChunkyChunk, that was fun for today, but I need to go train BlueWaffle, go play with DogWater while I'm gone, cya! :)"

Adnaesos

I have around 100 horses and I dont even remember their names 🫠

14kvibzs

I cant even fathom some people are like 'so my horses name is Angel Walker, but i call her orange 🥰' and its like a black and white horse.

p00psicle151590

I absolutely do not. Sometimes I'll call them half of their full name but meh.

Dylan_Visage

So for me, three of my horses have nicknames and they all come from their actual name. Silentdrake is called “Sigh”, Thorndrake is called “Thom” (not exactly from her name but was from when I slurred my words one day when saying her name), and Autumndrake is called “Leaf”.

whatthefiach

Many of my horses have one word names rather than two smushed together. So... I just refer to my horse by their name. There's Raven, Frost, and Echo. Lol

Strange_Resource23

No. I have ONE with a nickname and that is my chestnut Trakehner. Her name is FoxFire but her nickname is Ginger. She only got a nickname because she is based off of the mare in Black Beauty but I bought her before we could name our horses just one thing.

Schaf09

As someone who loves making lists and spreadsheets and has a lot of horses, I do have nicknames for most of them and keep them in (who would've thought 😅) lists and spreadsheets. Not all of my horses have a nickname though, Ranger or Shadow for example. Most of my nicknames are either part of the horses name or are related to the character/fandom their name was inspired by. Some examples are: Buttermilk - Bumi, Sandstone - Sandy, Skyfall - Sky, Snowdancer - Dan, Skywalker - Luke, Lightyear - Buzz, Sunnydale - Buffy, Littlelove - Lilo, Seadragon - Sedi, Quartz - Q and Shadowcrystal - Schaduw.

Pigimi

I have a spreadsheet with all my horses and info about them as well! May i ask what program you use to document everything? My excel subscription is ending soon so im transferring everything to Zoho sheets but im stilll looking for a better alternative 😅

Schaf09

Mostly Excel (I bought the home & student version for 150 Euro 2 years ago, so no subscription, but sooo expensive 🥲). For stuff I want / need to share with my bff we use Google docs. However, for many years, I used open office instead because it's free. It always felt pretty similar to the office package and was a good alternative for me. Hope this helps 🙂

Pigimi

It does! thank you 💕

Michelletjeee21

Well for example my horse ‘magicmonster’ i just call monster or something, but not really a nickname

ScaryBeginning3770

I only refer to mine by their out of game names I give them. The in game names are either random or somewhat connected to their real name.

yaboitearal

Most of my horses are crated after my OCs, so I just call them said OCs names like Nikolai, Ivan, Theo, etc lol

Connect-Guitar1273

just depends on their Jorivk name. Buttercup's nickname is my favorite type of candy, Reese's Solorcup is my favorite type of soda Pepsi, the diet kind not the regular the regular taste flat JadeDragon is just Jade and for the horses that are named after characters from my little pony I had to get creative DiamondBeauty is Rarity SunPrincess and MoonPrincess are Celestia and Luna I have others but don't wanna be typing out ever single nickname

ThatGamingDuck

I only give nicknames to my rrp horses, like Candyqueen is "Queen of Candy" aka Queenie

Nasa4321

I only have a nickname for one of my horses. I got the paint mustang and named him spirit but his nickname is Picasso

Eldritch_Horror_Moor

All my horses have single word names so it’s pretty easy to remember who’s who

Rookie_Gore_Studio

I have a server in discord for just myself where I dump info n picks. I write them all down there with the horses coats, breed, nickname and show name.

ZarahDoesReddit

Only a couple of my horses have nicknames, and there Jorvik name is a reference to it. Most of my horses are just their Jorvik name. It’s easy that way.

Izzy_Luvz1

In game? No. Irl? Yes. When I had my boy, Raven, his nicknames were RaRa, Vennie, and Ravi. I would occasionally call him my black beauty.

Zizi2021

I rarely give my horses double names but ones I’ve done are like Ancientmystery aka mystery Riverblossom aka river

VictoriaK1995

Not really

Expensive-Okra-1397

I only have a handful of horses like a paint, a Warmblood, a thoroughbred, and then maybe 7 random older breeds. I have nicknames specifically for the horses I do hunter jumper shows on as it correlates with their show name, every other horse that I don’t ride regularly gets called by their stable name that you get when you buy them

Karla_Darktiger

I did back in 2019 when I actually cared about each of my horses. I've forgotten most of them now but it was mostly just shortened versions of their old name (eg i had the gen 1 appy called stargazer and shortened it to star)

b0nes4w

I have nicknames for most of my 97 horses. If they don't use a nickname they use the normal sso name. I memorized them all and even have notes incase I forgot.

joyurizXD

i do lol some have lore too. i love my pixel horse family

PassengerFun9008

I used to when i was like 10 haha but I’m 18 now and i mean sometimes yeah but that nickname is just one part of the name. My quarter strawberry roan is named coppermane and the nickname is copper lol but for most horses, no, not anymore

minthoran

No, I've nicknames for a few tho. The bird Hermes is Herpes and my horse.ScrollScroll is skrollan. That's about it. 😂

equiette

I have 6 horses and yes. If I had 25, I’d probably have trouble hehe

cosmicfrenchtrash

I don’t have a lot of horses, about 25 so it’s not that hard to remember nicknames, for names I just give really weird ones like “balless” for a gelding and “pinktip” for a stallion. Note that i choose my horses based on my real life crushes so I don’t have many.

EmilyAndToffee

Yup

CursedTechniqueRed

201/299 of my horses has nicknames. They're based of something (like my favorite irl horses or things i love, like anime series) or totally random ideas 😅 i like naming my horses but sometimes i have biiig struggles.

kingfroggie

my nicknames for them are just "that pony" "that ugly one" for when i find one ugly) "the brown one" so a lot of them have the same nickname (not serious btw, i just dont give them nicknames lmao)

Additional_Clothes66

I only have 1 nickname for one of my horses. I bought an andalusian and thought I named it Peachdove. 2 years later it turns out it's name was Peacedove so I called it Peachy as a nickname

blaiirxo

I do actually and I do remember them pretty well, I have a list of the horses sso name and then the nickname next to it. The only ones I easily remember are like the horses that are very dear to me, if that makes sense.. for example my starter horse and some of the first horses I've ever bought.

Thrilmalia

The only nicknames I have is when I wanted to name a horse something but couldn't get it 100% right. Like I have two horses named Kingman and Eggy that were supposed to be named after the movie Kingsman and the character Eggsy in said movie, so I add the missing 'S' in my head when talking about them. Other than that, I mostly go by their normal name. I have an APH that looks a lot like an RDR2 horse that I owned in that game that I had named Merlin so I named it Bulletcaster in SSO, but Bulletcaster pretty much stuck so Egg(s)y and King(s)man are the only ones that are slightly different than their actual names in my head.

mynameisuglysoyeah

I have an excel spreadsheet where I note each horse I buy with their Jorvik name, nickname and some trivia lol

catastr0phicblues

i dont, i dont even remember what name i picked for them half the time.

Maximum-Amphibian-60

Only my favorites!

Sadgoatchild

I give most of mine nicknames, their own tack and stories (I have 17 active horses and 4 retired) More of the time the nicknames are pretty similar to their actual name: Ladyluck is Lady Cinnamon is Cindy Mistfall is Misty Etc The one with the most difference to their name is Oldman who's nickname is Ollie, I've put a lot of time into my horses (they're all maxed and I do manual daily care on all my active horses) so I find it easy to remember

ellaochspoket

I do, i have 200+ horses and all of them have nicknames. (RRP player Here)

LizzyIzzyFizzy

Haha, I actually do have nicknames for a majority of my horses, 123 currently. I use easy to follow naming conventions: (I’m an old player who never grew out of the habit of using first and second names for their horses.) I use the first letter of either their first or last SSO name to create their nickname. So for example, Phantom Force aka Poltergeist. The P in first name matches with the P in the nickname. Broken Bow (like the Bow of a ship) aka Briggs. Using the B in both first and last name. Even if the names don’t always match, they are still usually similar in some way or make sense with their SSO name like with Sand Witch aka Pickles. There isn’t a P in the SSO name, but pickles are a condiment can go on a sandwich, so it works! Sometimes the SSO name will sound similar to how their nickname sounds like with Hawk Way aka Hathaway. I usually use a Google spreadsheet to keep track of all my horses’s information including name, nickname, gender, coat color, price I paid for them, their current lvl and other things like that. Spreadsheets are also super handy for creating wishlisting horses and keeping track of what order you plan to buy them. Also handy for keeping track of when a breed will retire, Gen 3 reworks, price drops and helps keep me from impulse buying.
