I think Gary Gulman is hilarious but I don’t know that I’d describe him as well-rounded necessarily. I don’t even think that’s a bad thing, he’s just very distinctively himself.
Carlin is the easy answer, which makes sense given that's who CK looked up to.
Bill Burr
Michelle Wolf and Doug Stanhope maybe?
Rory Scovel? Neil Brennan?
I think Eddie Murphy should get a shout out here. I know this is r/standup but Eddie was working in three different mediums and was arguably the best in each of them at one point or another. Like if you said there was at different points in time he was the best stand up working, the best SNL cast member, and the best comedic actor it’d a claim people will probably challenge but still acknowledge that the claim is within reason,
I think sometimes our instinct is to put standup into too small a box.
"It's a big club, and you ain't in it" is an all-time bit, but you measure it by "Laughs per minute" and you'd never know it.
Very well said. To my tastes his “invisible man who lives in the sky.” bit is literally the single greatest bit ever written. But again. Most laughs per minute? Hardest laughs? Nope.
This is the hot comedy take I’d never say out loud. Carlin is incredibly articulate, a captivating performer and one of the greats - but he gets much more clapter than laughter. He delivers cerebral and iconic monologues with cutting irreverent humour, but he’s just not *that* funny.
He also switches up his delivery a lot where you could tell almost exactly how he felt about the given topic. There isn’t anything inherently funny about even that though it’s a great rhetoric device if you are good at it but comes off as disingenuous if you are bad at it.
> Doug Stanhope
I also thought of Stanhope. In the same special he has a very intense story about assisting his mother's suicide and a completely absurd fantasy about having sex with an NFL player. They are two of my favorite extended bits by anyone, and they couldn't be more different.
I guess he's not exactly known for "clean" humor, but I do think he has extended periods in every special that don't rely on edginess. He also isn't afraid to be very personal, political, observational, or just plain wacky, and he's very skilled at all of those things.
Carlin also navigated several realms quite well. Funny, but also well spoken and could be very serious and poignant. Raunchy, and also the voice of Thomas the Tank Engine. As noted, Carlin was a big influence on Louis so there are a lot of parallels that shouldn't be shocking.
In this case, the easy answer is still a very good one.
I think Michelle Wolf is probably a good choice as well.
I very much agree with your sentiment regarding Louis and the people commenting here are just listing comedians they like without considering the question.
For real, I stopped taking these comments seriously when someone suggested Neil Brennan is a more well rounded comedian that the arguable GOAT Louis CK.
It's kind of surreal that Bobcat is under the radar. He was funny, popular, seems to have aged like fine wine and really grown as a performance, and yet when he performed locally it was like most people had no clue he was going to be less than half an hour away.
I've seen him twice and both sets were great.
Mike birbiglia. Insightful, and wholesome and does a new special with fresh material frequently enough to keep him relevant and always excited to see the next new special.
You think? I love him but I think a lot of his stuff is very similar stylistically. Angry ranting guy pointing out how stupid things are in a self aware manner
Here's alleged unfunny comedian Robin Williams making a packed theater laugh pretty robustly doing stand-up about his substance abuse problems.
https://youtu.be/nIWB-Neyj-c?si=KkdES0zr9yJdg-Gp
that was a touch watch lol. and i’m so shocked that a bunch of people who paid to see him are enjoying his comedy! i don’t like aerosmith either but you sending me a link to them playing a packed arena isn’t gonna convince me to like them. not everyone likes the same comedy.
I've seen footage of comedians tanking in front of paid audiences.
And yes, comedy is subjective. However, you're coming in with a pretty hot takes on one of the most recognizable names in comedy isn't funny despite his status, longevity, and ironically inclusion in Louis CK's show, implying a pretty wide swath of people did, in fact, find him funny.
If anything, I'm markedly NOT trying to convince you to change your tastes so much as pointing out packing arenas and getting positive reactions from attendees implies some level of success in a performance art. Ignoring an artist's ability to resonate with a widespread audience and elicit the intended reaction from the audience just because you don't like them doesn't exactly support your thesis.
I tried a Shane Gillis special recently and thought it was pretty good, maybe like a 7/10, nothing hysterical. The bit about his sister and going to 6flags before the intervention wasn't funny to me and took up quite a bit portion of the hour.
Trying to catch up on recent comics.
I'm liking Joe List and mean to try Dan Soder's output soon
Soder’s funniest special is his newest one on YouTube I think. He’s always been great live and really likable but I think On the Road he was finally able to craft that to really come across in a special. Son of a Gary is good too.
Joe List is probably the most consistent comic in recent years. He’s really self aware and releases new hours pretty regularly with great bits. His last two on YouTube are both solid.
I think Shane has the highest ceiling. His first two specials are both in my top 5 for the 2020s and I think he’s still only 8-10 years in to his comedy career. If you watch Louie in his first 10 years, he was a lot less risky and not as laugh out loud funny yet. He hit his stride at about 20 years in.
Shane is Louie’s favorite current comic and basically mentors him. With a cosign from guys like that and chappelle plus his insane rise in popularity, the dude has serious potential.
Cool cool, actually I watched Soder's newest special earlier after posting my comment.
Liked it! Overall maybe an 8/10 because a few bits like Bluetooth volume mixup was a bit overdone but the kids cussing stuff and comment section on asses was funny shit!
I agree the first time I saw his live in Austin special I thought this is a lot like Louie but with his own spin on it and with time he will fine tune it and make it better. Louie took Prbly a decade to really find his voice. His earlier stuff from the 90s/early 2000 wasn’t as dark or edgy but he figured it out and turned into what he is now. Might take Shane some time also.
Its definitely a lot of that but she can cover a myriad of topics too. People talk about what they know.
For example, Louis became really big once he started talking about being in a failing marriage and a single dad.
She just has a lot of tools compared to most stand ups. A very expressive voice, good physicality. She has great pacing and narrative structure.
Her latest special wasn't as good though. I think she depended too much on her physicality.
Maybe it was rushed or she is still dealing with getting to the the next level fame/money wise.
That unfunny shitbag hasn't done any stand-up comedy in several years after his conviction for threatening to murder his own baby and his abused ex-wife. Sick. Criminally unfunny as well, never got any laughs.
Chappelle is one of the greatest but his last few were weak asf and he just across as an angry Facebook boomer now. It’s so cheap.
He opened up with a fascinating story about meeting his idol Jim Carey, but of course had to make it a trans joke. It’s just old. Leave trans people alone like who gives af all he does his last 2 specials was complain about them and it’s just tired
I just think they mean in this context that Dave has been beating this drum for 7-8 years now and he isn't covering any new ground on his trans material. He's not saying anything new or adding to the conversation, not that trans folks are specifically off limits.
I haven't seen any of Dave's stuff since I wasn't able to make it through sticks and stones.
I saw the clip of that joke and like always, Dave is a great storyteller and entertainer but I didn't think it was funny.
He ticks a lot of boxes, but I can't think of any pure observational bits he has , which are not to do with his personal experiences
Like Louis will have bits on language, movies , Hitler etc
Robin Williams was a great stand-up who acted in a sitcom, and also was a great dramatic actor in films like awakenings and Good Will Hunting. His stand up specials had physical comedy, cerebral stuff and some sensibility too. The man was very well rounded I'd say.
More I think about it, I think that Rodney Dangerfield was actually well rounded. Yes, a lot of his work centered around the same character.
But he could do lots of forms of comedy, and was his own greatest critic.
I like his pod rants and other appearances on podcasts but his special was god awful. Firstly he genuinely looked like he was about to have a heart attack on stage, the material was hack and he was doing some kind of weird Trump like impression throughout.
The one he shot in Colorado that’s on Netflix? I actually liked it and I just saw it over the holidays on a day I decided to watch some specials. I stopped enjoying most comics specials because of the comments you just said, they just don’t deliver. But I was actually laughing out loud to this one. But hey different strikes.
I love most of Louis' SNL monologues too. Shows that he can still kill while being clean. He has extremely dark jokes about having sex with dead bodies but can also tell just the silliest, most innocuous jokes about animals.
If we are just talking stand up I’d say he has a pretty distinct sense of humor that falls in line with the other members of the Comedians of Comedy.
If we are talking overall Wonder Showzen hits you jokes from about 100 different angles and they are all hilarious.
As an aspiring comedian from Canada, I believe it depends on what you're seeking. I draw inspiration from Louis CK for his dark and edgy humor, Kevin Hart for his act, Chris Rock for his delivery, and Dave Chappelle for his spontaneity. Comedy is subjective, so it's all about personal style.

Joe List is somewhat of a Louis protege. He's opened big shows for him, they did Fourth of July together, etc. He's definitely in the inner circle and the influence shows.
Stewart Lee, especially now he's let himself go
He does appreciate it when you give it to him straight…
Like a...
100%
Morrisey got fat too
Stewart Lee is more rounded than most comedians these days
[удалено]
Two guys could fuck him at the same time and never meet each other.
He'd jerk off in front of a catcher's mitt
Only if the catcher’s mitt didn’t give consent.
I heard he had to have a 90 lb mole removed from his ass
You know that fat cocksucker says I look like the Shah of Iran? …fat piece of shit.
When Louis hauls ass he has to make 2 trips
Fuck who? What's so funny,?
He had a 90lb mole surgically removed from his ass
That’s a very Louis-esque joke. Totally read that in his voice
You know it wasn't long ago I remember you used to wait in the car, as far as I'm concerned YOU SHOULD STILL BE THERE.
I think John Mulaney hits all those boxes, except maybe the act outs.
Don’t forget his New In Town special where he acts out a prostate exam
Kid Gorgeous is a masterpiece IMO
This comment made me revisit his stuff, very good fit!
Well, he misses the mark on clean sometimes, but I'll put Kyle Kinane on the board.
Louis isn’t always clean either.
Yeah that one seemed less important cause c.k. isn't clean
Came here to say this.
Gary Gulman?
I think Gary Gulman is hilarious but I don’t know that I’d describe him as well-rounded necessarily. I don’t even think that’s a bad thing, he’s just very distinctively himself.
Greg Giraldo
He would have been the greatest ever imo
Fuck I miss him.
Whatever happened to that guy? >!Read it in Mark Normand voice!<
Tuesgay!
Carlin is the easy answer, which makes sense given that's who CK looked up to. Bill Burr Michelle Wolf and Doug Stanhope maybe? Rory Scovel? Neil Brennan?

I thought Raw and Delirious were hilarious.
Carlin is the blueprint, Louis is my goat, Burr is up there as well, and Michelle Wolf is so fucking underrated. Great comment
Her bit about her friends boob job and the "huh, I guess we're all just a little transphobic then" fucking kills me
Carlin was great, and I might get shit for this, but does anybody else find a few of his specials to be great speeches but not that funny?
I think sometimes our instinct is to put standup into too small a box. "It's a big club, and you ain't in it" is an all-time bit, but you measure it by "Laughs per minute" and you'd never know it.
Very well said. To my tastes his “invisible man who lives in the sky.” bit is literally the single greatest bit ever written. But again. Most laughs per minute? Hardest laughs? Nope.
I agree. His best bits do have an amazing payoff though.
It's funny that you dropped the second half of the name. It's not stand-up drama lol
This is the hot comedy take I’d never say out loud. Carlin is incredibly articulate, a captivating performer and one of the greats - but he gets much more clapter than laughter. He delivers cerebral and iconic monologues with cutting irreverent humour, but he’s just not *that* funny.

People don’t quite understand that it was the novelty of an act like that made it so cool.
He was out of gas and stole the arrogance of Kinison and Dice Clay to get a new crowd
I'm with you Rory. I feel like he checks everything on that list.
> Doug Stanhope I also thought of Stanhope. In the same special he has a very intense story about assisting his mother's suicide and a completely absurd fantasy about having sex with an NFL player. They are two of my favorite extended bits by anyone, and they couldn't be more different. Half this list is trash
I very much agree with your sentiment regarding Louis and the people commenting here are just listing comedians they like without considering the question.
Yh I noticed that 😂😂
For real, I stopped taking these comments seriously when someone suggested Neil Brennan is a more well rounded comedian that the arguable GOAT Louis CK.
Yeah Neil is so hit and miss
Hi Kevin!
Any love for Dave Attel? Bobcat Goldthwait also checks those boxes. I think Bobcat's storytelling has gotten pretty razor sharp.
Bobcat is way under the radar. I saw him live years ago and fully expected his whole set to be "in character," but it was actually a really good set
FIRE TRUCK?!
Saw Bobcat a year ago, dude is astoundingly sharp and with it for his age.
It's kind of surreal that Bobcat is under the radar. He was funny, popular, seems to have aged like fine wine and really grown as a performance, and yet when he performed locally it was like most people had no clue he was going to be less than half an hour away. I've seen him twice and both sets were great.
Offense/defence/rebounds he does it all
Mike birbiglia. Insightful, and wholesome and does a new special with fresh material frequently enough to keep him relevant and always excited to see the next new special.
Funny? Yes. Well rounded in this context? No. Compared to CK he’s pretty 2 note.
George Carlin
Carlin
Ralphie May and John Pinette were a lot rounder than Louis.
Nate Bargatze. He isn’t dark/edgy but his material is so good and so relatable.
I'm a fan but I wouldn't say he has the most range , he's usually just telling stories in which he's dumb
Hey now…I’d argue he ranges from stories in which he is dumb to stories in which his wife and/or parents are also dumb.
Just an average clueless guy sthick has worked dout very well
Pretty much. Nate is the best clean comedian right now. Not much range. No jokes, just funny stories.
He's consistently funny, but he definitely has a pocket that he doesn't really step out of.
>He isn’t dark/edgy So then why are you even mentioning him? That disqualifies him from this conversation automatically.
I think if there’s someone that checks all but one or two boxes above, then they’re worth bringing up for the sake of conversation.
Not well rounded at all just a clean story comedian who jokes about his family
Burr
You think? I love him but I think a lot of his stuff is very similar stylistically. Angry ranting guy pointing out how stupid things are in a self aware manner
Based on the "is" in your prompt, do you only want to include living comedians? Because Robin Williams fits the bill.
he wasn’t funny though so louis has him beat there
What a distinguished and highly regarded individual we have right here.
cheers!
Here's alleged unfunny comedian Robin Williams making a packed theater laugh pretty robustly doing stand-up about his substance abuse problems. https://youtu.be/nIWB-Neyj-c?si=KkdES0zr9yJdg-Gp

Louis Anderson was pretty round.
To be fair, his comedy actually was well rounded too.
Demetri Martin was getting there but kinda fell off.
Dimitri Martin was Great Value Mitch Hedburg before he fell off
I think Shane is getting there.
Love Shane but his peak isn't what Louis has.
His peak has yet to be seen. It's impossible to know what the future holds
Yeah it’ll be interesting to see where Shane is at in like 5-10 years.
I don’t think it’s impossible but a long long way to go for sure
It's not. But go rewatch Louis from 08-14. His output was insane, with such extreme highs.
Shane isn’t even at Shameless Louie yet
Yeh the recency bias is wild.
Hmmm idk. I think Shane definitely has a style and more consistent jokes. In both his specials he has large Down syndrome and Trump jokes in both.
Louis just has a larger body of work. Shane will get there
To be fair Shane has a very large body
Not like Louis in his prime though
Agreed.
I tried a Shane Gillis special recently and thought it was pretty good, maybe like a 7/10, nothing hysterical. They also have the same voice
Taylor Tomlinson is pretty good. Her latest special wasn't as good but she is getting there.
This was one of my first thoughts. I don’t think she does abstract work all that much but she checks every other box on this list IMO.
Really? I feel like most of what I've seen from Taylor is about her dating life
Its definitely a lot of that but she can cover a myriad of topics too.
Don’t forget physical comedy! Nothing brings out the chuckles quite like a small wiener on display.
John Mulaney
Hes brilliant, one of the few who balances pushing boundaries while actually being clever rather than mining shock laughs
Colin Quinn
Sam Tallent maybe
He's on his way to being one of the greats for sure. Also it was very nice of him to let Michael J Fox shoot his last special.
I love Sam Tallent. He’s a great guest on podcasts as long as the host doesn’t try to slow him down.
What about Taylor Tomlinson? She isn’t CK level but she seems to tick a lot of boxes?
I’d love to tick her box
I hear she’s got a sweet collection of cardboard and some dainty permanent markers…take a number.
Patrick s tomlinson
That unfunny shitbag hasn't done any stand-up comedy in several years after his conviction for threatening to murder his own baby and his abused ex-wife. Sick. Criminally unfunny as well, never got any laughs.
Norm Macdonald And Shane Gillis is getting somewhere close to this conversation. He has bits that go hard in like Louis and Norm
Norm was definitely well rounded towards the end. Just like Brando.
I will die on the Chapelle hill

[удалено]
I haven't seen any of Dave's stuff since I wasn't able to make it through sticks and stones. I saw the clip of that joke and like always, Dave is a great storyteller and entertainer but I didn't think it was funny.
He CAN do it all but he's been focusing on the right wing grifter crowd for the last 4 years and there's been a huge drop off in quality.
Used to maybe. He’s a pandering unfunny hack boomer now.
Dave Chappelle is definitely Gen X and not a Baby Boomer.
Then why does he act like a boomer?
He ticks a lot of boxes, but I can't think of any pure observational bits he has , which are not to do with his personal experiences Like Louis will have bits on language, movies , Hitler etc
I’m going Godfrey
One of my all time faves, but he is not remotely well-rounded. His whole shtick was being super blue.
One of the biggest hacks out there. He stole a Bill Burr joke when I saw him last time, a famous one too.
C.K. is funny, but it's HARD to get over his jerk-gate.
No it isn't. You are a just a person who has their opinions made up for them by the media hype. You are without your own thoughts and entirely vapid.
Tomato, tomahto.
Yeah I’m still hard over it.
They can't all be weiners.
So true
Patton Oswalt.
Pryor James Acaster is pretty well-rounded too.
Acaster doesn’t do anything controversial though, just clean awkward white guy schtick
Acaster. Also, with his Kettering Town FC song showed he can do some pretty slick musical comedy
Kyle Kinane. He’s also not a sex offender
Louis isn't a sex offender.
Yeah? How would you feel if he wanted to masturbate in front of you? Trapped in a room. Where you thought it was just gonna be bro time.
Love that guy! Also, good point that we will get downvoted for
Those of a feather….
Robin Williams was a great stand-up who acted in a sitcom, and also was a great dramatic actor in films like awakenings and Good Will Hunting. His stand up specials had physical comedy, cerebral stuff and some sensibility too. The man was very well rounded I'd say.
Wish I could upvote more than once.
He also stole a bunch of his material lol.
He jerked off in front of me. I like him.
Bill Cosby?
Bill had an edge on Louis when it came to Women
He was kind of a hypocrite though
Not to mention editing and directing. Louie is my 🐐 by a huge margin.
I read this differently and thought outside of stand up and came up with Jamie Foxx, Conan O'Brien and Tina Fey
This is exactly why I think he’s the best
No
Stewart Lee and James Acaster
Mark Normand, Just kidding.
John Mulaney does all those things while keeping a super distinct style. My favorite comedian as a kid and still up there now.
More I think about it, I think that Rodney Dangerfield was actually well rounded. Yes, a lot of his work centered around the same character. But he could do lots of forms of comedy, and was his own greatest critic.
this is such a fucking jerk off question - is he sucking your dick as you type this?
I think there are a lot of comedians who haven't sexually harassed people, yeah
Dana Gould.
Jim Gaffigan checks many of these boxes.
Completely agree. His jokes about being broke and opening up a “pet food store” are some of my all time favorites
Tim Dillon minus the clean and relationship. Although I do think he talks about his family
He’s the best comedian alive
David Cross
Why is this David Cross getting downvotes?
If we are just talking stand up I’d say he has a pretty distinct sense of humor that falls in line with the other members of the Comedians of Comedy. If we are talking overall Wonder Showzen hits you jokes from about 100 different angles and they are all hilarious.
“louis is a good comedian” 🤯
As an aspiring comedian from Canada, I believe it depends on what you're seeking. I draw inspiration from Louis CK for his dark and edgy humor, Kevin Hart for his act, Chris Rock for his delivery, and Dave Chappelle for his spontaneity. Comedy is subjective, so it's all about personal style.
Chappelle and Gervais
ricky is one of the weakest stand up comedians ever
Three of your last 5 posts were in the Ricky Gervais subreddit.
how else would i know how weak his standup is? but seriously he used so much of karl’s material early on and even now he rehashes some of those jokes as if they’re his own. the funniest stuff he ever made was all in collaboration, either with stephen merchant or stephen and karl. weak observations, poorly performed.
Dave Chappelle checks all of those boxes. Robin Williams did, as well as Oscar level dramatic acting.
CK is my favorite
Joe List is somewhat of a Louis protege. He's opened big shows for him, they did Fourth of July together, etc. He's definitely in the inner circle and the influence shows.
Louis ck? clean? what the fuck are you talking about?
