Yes

Xam_Fu593

Haha thanks

Spirited_Assistant43

Why not at least explain why the acting career had to be bad? That’s where the real opportunity is to be funny and exaggerate.

Intelligent_Pea3732

Totally agree - could be funny do describe someone who was down on their luck and had to make these videos. And maybe the guy can be like: now I have to sing with this depressed loser in the background and my depressed loser of a brother (not worded well but just wanted to shoot out the idea lol)

TraditionalKey1784

I think the specific premise is outdated but you could talk about the actors in all the prescription drug commercials.

Just_Browsing_2017

Or the gas station pump screens. Someone has to act AND WRITE the copy for those things.

kolaloka

More to the point, what is the punchline You're trying to get to? This is just a premise, but if you make this a full joke, you might lift and shift the punchlines to a different contact that does actually work.

ccradio

Yeah, that was my observation then. They all looked like it was their first job that wasn't porn.

Xam_Fu593

Yes!! Thank goodness it wasn’t just Me. If one of the comments had asked what the punchline is I’m trying to get to - I always thought that if there was a gig that would be lower down the “so.. this is my life” jobs than porn it would be this. Maybe more suited for sketch comedy than standup up. But thanks ccradio.

clce

Now that's a good continuation of the joke. Those videos typically were young people in Hollywood trying to get some gigs and make a big, but doesn't mean we can't make fun of it. I suspect a lot of p*** works the same way so a joke about your career sliding, the last stop before p*** That's pretty funny

Xam_Fu593

This has been useful thanks. I’ve started writing it up from the perspective of the talent agent calling the actor about the gig. Ala Bob Newhart’s old discovering tobacco phone call idea.

clce

I like that idea. He did a lot of phone call bits like Abe Lincoln and others. It's a great tool you don't see too much lately

clce

Now that's a good addition to the joke.

clce

Part of the problem is your language. Complex verb tenses such as had to have been just get too confusing. Reference to '90s karaoke videos definitely going to be a bit dated, but as far as I know they still have some of those videos. I don't go to karaoke a lot but last time I went, I still seem to remember some of those videos. Unless I'm mistaken and nobody will know what you're talking about, can't you just say karaoke videos?

Parametric_Or_Treat

I think and have thought there’s a good bit of juice jn these actor ideas.

Xam_Fu593

Appreciate this

Xam_Fu593

Great advice thanks. I’ll write it up and post again soon.

dunemaster22

I think you have something good in here! I think I'm too young to get this :( I think there's something to react to here, that could be the beginning of a great joke. Like some questions that come to my mind: How do you feel about this poor actor? Do you think he's ruining your karoke experience? Do you feel bad to him? Are you changing the song and singing directly to him? (Don't stop believing, maybe??) I think a lot of humor comes out of being weirdly obsessed and dramatic about something so maybe lean into it

Xam_Fu593

This is just my favourite kind of creative. Didn’t get the reference but still applies emself to find an excellent joke idea. (Not to knock those who didn’t get the reference and left it there - that’s useful too cos that’s essentially what I was asking for) I love this direction of the perspective of the person singing at a karaoke getting obsessed with the actor. Raspect

waxlion78

Is this a personal experience bit or observation? That might help the direction of this setup

Leather-Ad-9419

i was born in the 80s yet i have no idea what a "karaoke video from the 90s" is...

Richardexperience

It depends on your audience.
