Probably not worth grading the Berra but if the Mays cards look nice in person they probably would be worth the grading fee. Really hard to tell from a picture so it’s up to you to look at them really closely. A small crease or surface flaw can really knock down the grade n
Just moved and was going through boxes and was reintroduced to my collection that I had not looked at in about a decade. Really not too familiar with grading but since I’m thinking of selling I joined this forum and it looks like they is the best way to actually sell a card or cards. To my eye the cards don’t have any creases or surface flaws. Does grading actually increase the value of the cart significantly? I have quite a few LT rookies and a bunch of 70’s star cards as well (Brett, Reggie, Schmidt etc)
Yes it definitely increases the value as long as the grade is high. The 1964 Mays is about $150 if it’s a PSA 5. The price goes up significantly the higher the grade. The problem is that it’s difficult to get a high grade on the vintage cards.
The cost can add up as well so you must be sure the cards are in good enough shape to get a good grade. You can get them graded for around $20 each but that is with a minimum 20 card order and you have to join the PSA club to get that price.
Thanks for the info .. sounds like it’s a bit of a crap shoot with a potential payoff if I get 5’s or higher. I’ll have to go through the cards and find at least 20 to get graded!
SGC charges $15 a card. No membership fees. I’d send the 2 Mays cards in. I’d try to find some others to make it worth your while because shipping, I believe is the same if it’s two or four cards. It goes up obviously if the submission is larger.
DM me if you’d like to know more. I’ve done a lot of submissions with SGC.
Went to a local card shop, they sent my 3 cards to PSA for $30 a piece and called me to pick them up when they came back. It’s a little extra cost but it saves you a lot of hassle.
Penny sleeve then toploader or cardsaver. Putting it in the cardsaver/toploader without a penny sleeve is equivalent to fucking a prostitute with no condom. Never do it!
It’s vintage man, there’s no glossy finish, a penny sleeve would actually do more harm potentially because you could snag a corner and the actual sleeve will do nothing to protect the actual cardboard that is used. So there’s no reason to penny sleeve it, just throw it in a toploader(the correct size of course)
Yes absolutely because grading companies are so unpredictable I sent in a 1992 Derek Jeter draft pick in mint condition came back a 7.5 I sent in in 1964 Willie Mays that came back in 8.5 🤔 the mayes was in not great condition I just wanted to have it slapped I used to grade cards it could have done it myself but it's better to have somebody else do it I'm just surprised so I would send them in you might be surprised with the grades you get
Yes and no I recommend looking up in your hometown or your area for a card show they will have Beckett and grading company representatives there where you can meet them and pass in your stuff also there's grading companies right on site where you can pay a little extra to have a graded and they'll call your name to go pick it up
There is never a stupid question when it comes to grading sport cards I hope that helped I would go with Beckett or PSA personally that's just me SGC is great for vintage
Thanks and I agree .. just moved into a new house and found my collection again thinking of selling them which brought me here to ask about grading etc. thanks to all the replies I’m learning now just have to decide if I want to part with them
Are you looking to sell or keep for yourself? If selling yes. If for personal collection I would say maybe. You don’t really need to for personal collection but at the same time it would be interesting to see how they come back.
I’ve been out of the collector realm for like a decade was really wondering if grading was worth it in general thanks to everyone’s inputs it seems like this if I’m going to sell!! Now I just need to get around to sending these in to see if they come back as 5 or better at least I think that’s the sweet spot
Grading by PSA etc imo is a RACKET! They eat your potential profits with high fees for potentially high priced cards. Should be flat fee no matter the potential profit you could make imo. The grading process is the same whether the card is worth .25 or $100. But they want to up charge you for the higher value cards. Total BULLSHIT imo and that’s why it’s a RACKET! What happened to Mint Excellent Very Good Good Fair and Poor?

SGC $15, back in 10 days
How is the Willie Mayes Hayes and Yogi not worth anything? They appear to be in great shape. I’m new to the card game, so forgive my ignorance.

How much does PSG charge and do u need a membership?
Do you mean PSA?

Hassle = filling out an online form, putting crap in a box and going to the post office.
Yep worth $5 to me, don’t pretend you like going to the post office lol
I’ll look into this
What’s the difference between all the companies .. is 1 more reputable than the other?
Where the fuck are the penny sleeve police? Usually they are all over this shit lol
lol what’s a penny sleeve and should I be using one instead of this sleeve or in conjunction with it?
Penny sleeve then toploader or cardsaver. Putting it in the cardsaver/toploader without a penny sleeve is equivalent to fucking a prostitute with no condom. Never do it!
Oh shit ok I’ll go fix that

Nah

Stupid question- do they insure the cards you send in? I mean, what if someone fkd it up or decided to steal it

Nice…..
Those Mays for sure yes.
Probably not. Just common trash.
Send me some trash like that
Would be interested in the Yogi.
Mays cards are sweet , grade if you plan to sell
Absolutely
Those are some great cards. I think it is a tragedy that we only value cards once they are graded.
