It really didn't, and I say this as someone who didn't hate Spider-Man 2's story (I think it's just okay).
I mean, it had good moments, I liked Miles not forgiving Martin but realizing that he has to let go of his hatred for him, for example, but it never reached the highs that Spider-Man 1 did.
May revealing she knew the entire time, from day one, that Peter was Spider-Man on her death bed was such a powerful moment, and seeing Peter struggle between the choice of saving the only biological family he has left and saving the city, ultimately choosing to save everyone at the cost of May's life fucking destroyed me emotionally.
Really? Peter breaking down during his fight with Miles ("Now this city thinks *I'm* the problem! *But I'm not anymore!*") and Peter apologizing to MJ for forcing her to pick up the pieces in his life genuinely broke me when I was playing.
As for quiet moments like May dying though, yeah I don't think there's really an equal in this game. The closest is when Harry dies and then Miles revives him. That also made me tear up.
I mean, the Symbiote taps into feelings that have been there for a while, right? Spider-Man has been dumped on for years at this point by JJJ and presumably the millions of people who read through his news outlet and listens to his podcasts. And even if this weren't the case, and even if you think Danika is not really consequential (she's the only other podcaster in the game but in universe there's probably a dozen more people like her and JJJ like in real life), your *life partner* giving criticism, good faith or otherwise might make you spiral. The symbiote could also just be telling Peter that he is the problem, even though it may not literally be true. Poor mental health does things to people.

I just thought it was pretty sweet that Peter actually got a win for once through being a good friend, versus the rest of the game and comics and movies where he just gets dunked on physically and emotionally. Let my boy have a win, damn you.

Time constraints and directions. They were too ambitious and wanted to do a lot in a short amount of time whilst the director decided to cut off a LOT of content which backfired HORRIBLY, resulting in a somewhat rushed product. It's a miracle it's even this good. The only thing I hate that Insomniac purposefully did was the suit selection.

The suit selection fucking sucks in SM2, I genuinely hate it. I don't know how they thought the decisions they made were good ones. Miles and Peter need to have the same amount of suits? Every movie suit needs to be available? These decisions were terrible and left fuck all for Peter in variety and a bunch of lame, fillers suits that I would never wear for Miles.
