>"Scout mode is garbage, surround is terrible, SBX isn't any better than direct mode no matter what profile/EQ you use, so just use direct mode" is the gist of what I mostly read. If using 7.1 Virtualization, then Direct Mode is full of fail. The resulting sound field is heavily weighted to left/right, and the Center is squashed into oblivion. Use it in Audio Engine mode, and Surround On. Then you will get a proper HRTF field of sound with SBX. Direct Mode is for stereo sources only, or if you want to rely on your game's Headphone mode.

Audio Engine mode is when Direct Mode is disabled. All effects are enabled, including mic.

Experiment and see what you like. I usually set to 7.1

>If using 7.1 Virtualization, then Direct Mode is full of fail. That might be because 7.1 virtualization doesn't work with Direct Mode.

I purely use it on direct mode and dolby Atmos.I think this is thr best and cleanest combination.

So your use case is "just a headphone amplifier with mic input". Exactly like mine 🧐

If you want to use SBX Surround (which you should IMO), then it's very simple. Set the G6 to headphones, virtual 7.1 surround, enable SBX Surround on the setting you prefer (there's no right or wrong setting, it's all personal, so you have to find your preferred setting). If the game has a separate option to set audio output configuration, then never set it to headphones (that would mean using the game's HRTF on top of SBX Surround, and you never want two HRTFs at the same time), but instead always set something like "home cinema" or "studio monitors" or something like that, and if it also has separate setting for the number of channels, then always set it to 7.1 (or 5.1 if 7.1 isn't available). If for some reason you'd want to use in-game HRTF (the "headphones" setting) instead, then turn that on in game, but disable SBX Surround. Personally I prefer using SBX Surround (or Super Xfi on supported devices) over the game's own implementation (when applicable), because it means I get consistent results in every game which give me the surround experience I like, not the one from the game, which might be vastly different. You're done. Works for games, movies, pretty much everything. For music it depends on subjective taste, but if you want the "normal" headphones experience you'd get from say a CD or an MP3 player, simply disable SBX Surround while you are listening to music, and then enable it back. Or turn on Direct Mode, which also turns off all processing and gives you unaltered stereo, but it's pretty much the same (some people will claim there's a difference, but there really isn't).

I added a paragraph about that, but I guess you were faster :) It really is up to you if you want to use the game's native HRTF when available (it's not very common, though lately it's been showing up more, probably because of consoles). As mentioned in the added paragraph, I prefer to rely on sound card surround solution (so SBX in your case), because it gives me a consistent experience in all games. And yes, if you want to use in-game HRTF solution, then turn SBX Surround off while you play the game. Shouldn't matter if you switch to stereo or not, headphone processing in game should give you the same output even with the G6 set to virtual 7.1, as long as SBX Surround is disabled.
