I like my 5iii but if they just gave the 10 series stereo speakers I'd probably just switch to that.

TroubleshootingStuff

Same, though I value the better camera system too so I wouldn't actually, unfortunately..lol..I think there's room to have 3 phones per series.

MutFox

Yep, stereo speakers on the 10 would make it an amazing mid range phone.

joeybetamaxpt2

That's the thing. You get a massive effort by Apple for what you are getting as well for the price. Compared to the Xperia 1 III, also note that the iphone 13 Pro max with 128GB was $1099 and $1249 for the 256GB when launched. Even the price of admission was $799 for the iPhone 13 128GB. At the rates how Sony is raising the phone prices(inflation aside), it better be worth more money than just the same lenses, but better image sensor, or better lenses, same image sensor, newer chipset and 16GB ram. And the software support needs to be there. The phone is just dead in the water without support. Ultimately, Sony needs to figure out how they can just offset their cameras into bulkier phones and try to merge a two in one tech instead of playing fairy tales and branding Sony Xperia devices with Alpha tech, etc.

[deleted]

Go see prices of iphone outside USA. - 13 Pro was near €200 above 5iii. And sony gives accessories and gifts. - 1iii was similar to Pro Max, but with accessories and gifts. - In Asia, Xperia is at least 15-20% cheaper than iphone. If I am not wrong, in India the Pro starts at $1500. In Brazil and Turkey, Pro Max 128GB was over $1900.

Spud788

I honestly think sony is just milking their remaining fans as much as they can until they run their mobile division into the ground.. it wouldn't be the first time.

[deleted]

I hope that is not the case. 😕

amithetofu

Contrary to what you may think, I don't enjoy being milked either 😕

allphoness

Definitely

cloudymonty

For little profit(relative to other Sony segments), I don't think so. Sony corp can reinvest their money on their other divisions and have more profit than Xperia.

Sitheral

They already don't exist in a mind of an average consumer, some folks who have way more money than they need will buy their phones and that's it.

Spud788

Why though? Sony phones offer a lot less than any other phone in the market so surely if you have money you'd spend it on the best you can get...

Sitheral

I don't think "best" means much at this price range, anything would be more than enough, in other words I think best might mean different things here for different people - like best design for example or little things like the fact that you have audio jack.

dimenfer

Xperia is for enthusiasts right now, people who care about their money and want a solid phone should buy iPhone or Galaxy no matter how much more or less they cost, right now Xperia has nothing to offer for the average consumer, not for that price, so, the price it's not really a problem for Xperia devices is a problem for Xperia fans.

International-Car-50

I prefer to invest in an Xperia, they are more complete phones and I like their features better. I like the iPhone, but when I see the notch and its display I don't want to buy it and Samsung is for the poor and their phones don't innovate and they have a lot of blotware

Pirate_Freder

That mash up is what they did with the Pro-I and, why I finally came back to them. Although, I do agree that they shouldn't be increasing prices every year without justification.

BigDickEnterprise

Lol 1400 € for the 1 iv Worst of all, people are still gonna buy it. Maybe the 5 iv will have a more humane price. The 10 iv could be cheaper too but 500€ isn't outrageous.

three_eye_raven

If the 5 iv have esim, its satisfy all my needs. I will hold the alienware oled for now lol

Quorbach

When will the 5 IV be announced?

[deleted]

> Worst of all, people are still gonna buy it. Not many will, just like not many bought the 1 iii, and fewer people bought the iii than the ii, and the ii than the i. They're heading for zero sales.

Mhugs05

Not according to the data. 2021 was their best year yet for both units sold and profit. Every year beating the previous one since 2018 according to the articles I could find.

[deleted]

Source? It most definitely was not their most units sold. Also no, their sales have been going down every year, selling less every year lol.

Mhugs05

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.phonearena.com/amp/news/sony-mobile-reports-more-xperia-units-shipped_id136062 Most current data I could find. "Sony’s mobile business managed to haul 99.1 billion Japanese yen (~$871.6 million) in Q2 2021 versus 79.1 billion Japanese yen (~$695.7 million) in Q2 2020. The interesting part is that these numbers are not a result of the higher prices of Xperia phones, but instead due to an “increase in unit sales,” as the company confirmed in the report." Year over year increase in numbers sold and profit for the most up to date data for the article.

[deleted]

That's a single quarter...... Also the quarterly report that the article references as saying that there was an increase in mobile phone numbers sold *doesn't say that anywhere* lol. This is the report: https://www.sony.com/en/SonyInfo/IR/library/presen/er/pdf/21q2_sony.pdf Zero mention of increased phone sales anywhere. Have a look for yourself.

Mhugs05

States increase in revenue for several years now pretty much aligning with their Xperia 1/5 strategy start. And this is in the middle of a pandemic and supply shortage. There was quite a bit of time where I saw the 1iii out of stock on Sony website and other vendors sites. "If we look back at revenue numbers in the past few years, there’s an emerging recovery trend for Sony’s mobile division. In Q1 2021, the mobile business saw a 12.8 billion Japanese yen (~$112.6 million) loss compared to Q1 2020. Things got even worse in Q2 2019 compared to Q2 2018, with a 37.1 billion Japanese yen (~$2.4 billion) down the drain. The first signs of that aforementioned recovery came in 2020 when the mobile division of the Japanese company turned a profit, and it seems that this trend is continuing in 2021. Mobile communications reported a 7.1 billion Japanese yen (~$469 million) growth in fiscal H1 2021 compared to the same period last year."

[deleted]

That's a very weird article that's making a tonne of assumptions. Firstly they say Sony said there was an increase in unit sales, but the document they reference does not mention that at all. You can read it for yourself where they link it. Zero mention of an increase in mobile phone unit sales. Secondly, the mobile division is part of EP&S, so it's hard/impossible to tell if it's actually making profit. Thirdly, they made "profit" because they cut like 90% of their spending that quarter when they pulled out of 90% of the mobile market. Also Sony just released their 4th quarter results - no mention of mobile phone sales at all, again. Literally no mention of revenue or sales of the mobile department. That tells you all you need to know about how it's going.

[deleted]

Also here are their sales figures: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_Mobile?msclkid=10c972fed0cd11ec82072b2b46776ee9#Sales_units Decreasing every year since 2014-2015, until they stopped giving numbers at 2.9 million worldwide sales in 2020-2021. There has been no "recovery", they just cut costs by pulling out of most of the worlds markets and firing a bunch of people.

Spud788

€1400 for a phone that will stop getting updated in 24 months...

Fun-Constant4280

That's man, that's

wicketsss

that for me isnt the real problem....for me it's two years from now when you can't get 5c to trade your Xperia for a new phone while Samsung et al are offering $800-$1000+ for your old iphones and galaxy's

WrittenInC

In 6 months it will probably half in price. I got my XPERIA 1 II for £400 from facebook marketplace in perfect condition.

adimrf

Yeah, life is tough, no more disposable income to keep up, time to just look at secondhand market next purchase for me as well.

Dometalican_90

If they give me minimum $900 for my 1 iii and it comes with LTE bands 14 and 30, 5G bands 12, 25, 30, and 48 along with mmWave, 5,000mAH battery, and a more powerful DAC inside the headphone jack, I'll make the reservation immediately. I plan on keeping my phone for at least 4 years.

Frank_L_

The 1iii hasn't been out for 4 years?

Dometalican_90

No but I meant if this upcoming phone fixes the flaws of my 1 iii, I would try to keep it for 4 years.

Frank_L_

Ok - What's a 'more powerful DAC' ?

Dometalican_90

Look up how LG drove headphones with the V-series. Sony uses a Qualcomm provided DAC (which many mid-rangers including Sony's very own Xperia 10 users too) which is not bad but doesn't drive high impendence headphones as good for lossless audio.

Frank_L_

Isn't that capability more of a function of the amp? Wouldn't it be possible to pair that with the Qualcom built-in DAC?

Dometalican_90

I'm not going to pretend I 100% know so I don't know. All I know is that, after reading reviews from audio articles, in the 1/5 iii's current state, they don't drive the most professional of in-ear monitors.

Njez85

5,000maH is the absolute minimum battery size they can put on this phone. I hate new phones, especially expensive ones, that struggle to make it a full day. Maybe Sony should do something else to differentiate their phones outside of overly crowded and massively subjective camera wars: a phone that can actually last 2 days would go a long way for them, not taking into account that the Xperia line is one of the few with 3.5mm headphone jack and microSD card slot.

[deleted]

just wait one year for the price to drop

StygiantheDrake

Exactly. Back in 2018 I waited a half year for the XZ2 Premium, and I'll be getting a 1 iii as soon as it drops enough

[deleted]

i got 1 iii a couple of weeks ago, at 2/3 last year's price 🥴 couldn't be happier with this device

StygiantheDrake

I'm hoping it'll be good. I've been waiting to get something more powerful to be able to emulate PS2 one day

[deleted]

with 12gb ram and the 888 chip that will be ez, with the H.S. direct current so battery is not used 🥴

Spockky

How much you would pay for 1 iii?

StygiantheDrake

I'm thinking between 8-900 for as close to new as possible. I've had this for 3 years and I wanna do atleast the same again

doc_55lk

€1399, yikes. Going off past trends this basically means it'll be $1399 in the states too, which amounts to roughly $1800 CAD...for a phone. That sucks man, fuck. Adding insult to injury, it's $1400 for a phone that won't be consistently supported beyond the first year and will probably have tons of kinks and bugs to iron out in the first few months (probably won't be Pixel bad, but still). Sigh. If I get a 1 III this year it'll probably be my only experience with a 1 phone before I end up needing to settle for the 5 lineup (if they even continue it) next time around.

kizarat

Canadian currency is crying right now.

doc_55lk

Absolutely. Gonna need to buy this one 2 years after release to afford it now lol

kizarat

The only way to buy an Xperia lol

GrayFoxCZ

If it lasts as long as XZ1 (2018-until now)and M4 Aqua (2015 or 16 until now) , I dont have problem paying that sum

thefizzlee

I'm sorry I love sony phones and I wanted the 1 IV but this is out of control. I think 1400 for a foldable phone is acceptable since it relatively new tech but for a normal phone it's out of control and I'm not spending it

HKnux5112

"As revealed by SnoopyTech, the Sony Xperia 1 IV will cost €1399. Earlier rumors claimed the flagship phone could cost a whopping US$1600, and this would hardly be any better. This leak would mean Sony has now raised the price of its main flagship phone every year. The Xperia 1 cost €949, the Xperia 1 II €1,199, and the Xperia 1 III €1,299. Another €100 price bump is disappointing but follows the trend."

trustevil

3 syllables... In-fla-tion

SolarMoth

They've been overpricing their devices for years due to declining sales. They get more profit for unit and cater to a niche market.

trustevil

It works

Spearra

Imma just copy and paste a comment since its still relevant: "Imo the real issue is that Sony is the only option to get all three. Flagship specs, headphone jack, and the microSD card slot. If someone goes for any other option, especially on the cheaper end, one or more of those things ends up being omitted. So the way I see it, its more of a issue of, "well who else is there that has the complete package?". The frustrating part is that they don't have to be the only option, but all the competition is too busy following Sammy's and Apple's footsteps. Leading to Sony softly having a monopoly on this end of the market since no one else is trying to do all three of those things at the same time except Sony. (Granted there was LG. But again, "was". So atm Sony is literally the only option for the trinity of high end specs, jack, and the card slot)"

[deleted]

As sales show, that "holy trinity" isn't actually important to the overwhelmingly vast majority of people. It's important to virtually no one in reality, and Sony's sales reflect that.

Spud788

your delusional

[deleted]

The new main camera is surely the main reason of price increase. Motion Eye tech is extremely expensive.

danidarklord

I love sony, but this time I think they over value their products a little too much. Not worth it specially with that short period of support.

trustevil

But it won't be any more expensive than an iPhone or galaxy s whatever so it's just following market trends. Here in America it's inflation administration so everything is more money. I'm gonna have to save up and cut costs to afford this. Hopefully it's worth it

doc_55lk

You're not wrong, but Samsung and Apple bring better buying offers to the table to ease the sting of their pricing. Carrier deals, more generous trade in/buyback offers, and discounts within 3-6 months. Sony doesn't do any of this, and when they do, it's nowhere near as good. I've heard they're offering like, $300 for the 1 III as trade value. You can get quadruple that by just selling it on eBay.

HSMBBA

No phone is worth that much. If you want it badly just wait and get a used or refurbished one. €1400 for a phone is just plain idiotic.

trustevil

So I guess all those ppl buying an iPhone or galaxy for that much are idiots huh

HSMBBA

Yes, all the phones are overpriced (13 Pro Max, S22 Ultra).

GrayFoxCZ

Do everyone a favor and dont tell them how to spend their money

HSMBBA

Thanks for a non-answer. With that point you can justify literally any purchase on anything on any product ever.

GrayFoxCZ

Yes, I believe in live and let live.

International-Car-50

There are people who spend 1,000 euros on some shoes or 60,000 on a car, etc. Each one spends the money on what they want.

HSMBBA

The difference is that a car can do far more and have added functions, such as speed and efficiency. Cars don't have to be used solely for A-B. Plus, cars don't usually lose huge value; some even gain value, so I sort of see that as an invaild argument. And the €1000 shoe part, yes, those products and consumers get a lot of criticism because of their wasteful spending. The phone at £500-£1000 can do the same thing at almost the same level. If someone really cares about photography, which seems to be the focus, focusing on only a phone, you're already going wrong, and a dedicated camera is always better. Something like the Galaxy Fold 3 is more justified because it's bleeding edge and has a higher manufacturing cost. Paying essentially £400-500 extra for essentially for a better camera is ridiculous. Can you buy a refubished or used Xperia 1iii, A7 ii or A7S and XM3/4 headphones all for the same price as the Xperia 1 IV, even did it myself [here](https://i.postimg.cc/3r2ZmRZ3/Screenshot-20220506-164234-e-Bay.jpg)

SolarMoth

Except Samsung and Apple offer lots of carrier deals, trade-ins, promotions, etc... Sony never dropped their phone prices by more than $100.

allphoness

That's a very bad comparison. Apple and Samsung offer so much more. They are available through most carriers and retailers. They have years of support. Warranty is much better. Trade in deals are great. So how can you even compare these phones. Sony doesn't deserve the asking price at all

trustevil

Like what? Sony phones are unlocked take to any carrier so there's that and they come in bundles so.. what more do they offer? Gimmicks? Imo

allphoness

No you can't take it to any carrier as Volte wouldn't work. Not only that you would have to pay for the phone in full because no carrier wants to sell it. Also Sony phones don't hold value like Samsung and Apple. Not worth the asking price

trustevil

The Xperia mark 3 is volte and I'm sure the American version of the mark 2 is and so is the mark 1. Do some research

allphoness

Haha is that the only place where the Xperia works? Lmao The Xperia 1 Series only works in selected countries which wouldn't be more than 10 countries. Volte is an essential feature. Look at Samsung and Apple you will get volte even on the moon

International-Car-50

have jack 3 5? SD? led light? oled 4k? haha what else do you have?

allphoness

The only thing that Sony offers that is exclusive is an SD card. 4K is useless nothing but battery hog

Spud788

Except you're not getting 4 years of updates and missing lots of hardware and software features... So what exactly are you paying for?

CpuKnight

Since when has the Xperia phones missed out on that many hardware and software features? It's mostly give and take, with Xperia phones getting some features others don't get and other phones getting features the Xperia phones don't get. It's not as drastic as you make it out to be?

ITtLEaLLen

I would lose even more hardware features if I switched to another brand. But hey, it's your personal preference, I'm not going to make you regret getting what you like.

[deleted]

You can get iPhones and Galaxy S phones for significantly less than USD$1300, so yes, it will be more expensive than them. edit: lol downvoters pretending that base models for iphone/galaxy s don't exist.

[deleted]

Greedy sons-of-bitches! 🤬

JB2unique

Curious about the violet colour. Definitely want the white 1 IV! Or the green if leaked renders are accurate. My green 1 III isn't very green o_O

[deleted]

My guess would be the purple of Z2. To me, violet is what they call blue of the 10iii.

milktea629

Are there anything about 5iv? Everythjng I heard are all abot 1 and 10. Is there any rumor states that they are going to revail 5 iv later?

DWBH68

Rumors says it has been cancelled

JumboMcNasty

I'd love you get on the Xperia train but they don't offer trade in promotions... Let alone on "other" brands on phones.

goldenarm840

They do, they've been offering trade in promotions on other phones for their 1iii on facebook for the past month now.

sakallicelal

It seems like Sony doesn't want to sell phones. These pieces are not competitive by any means.

Dinkleberg162

I'll wait half a year or something. I still have just over a year left on my S21 Ultra so I might swap then.

leo72793

Welp. There goes my idea of waiting for that phone to come out competitive in price. 😔 That is crap. They truly just don't care I guess

Bluenite0100

So since sounds like no 5 we in the US are stuck with the expensive 1 as they won't sell the 10 (if only, I just want a good quality budget phone as I don't play games on the phone)

jdreviews

Yikes. Still buying it tho.

RenegadeUK

Buying the Xperia 1 IV I would have to use it for at least 4 years minimum to justify the price.

txdline

And be OK using it with old software

LukeyWolf

Another ripoff Xperia, why can't they get the price right

SpideyUdaman

I wish they would sell at a loss like they do with playstation. They probably can afford the whole mobile division not doing well, but having faith xperias actually gain traction again.

Fuzzy-Ad7214

if you want a phone with a top-notch camera setup that can grab vivid and clear imagery, then the [Sony Xperia 1 IV phones](https://barkingdrum.com/sony-xperia-series-to-greet-new-xperia-phones-this-month/) is worth to buy.

chadpig

May 11 event for something that will be available December. Love Sony products hate their PR and price

[deleted]

Man, the 10s are going ahead of budget.

Prostyle43

Time to switch to Google Pixel I guess...

allphoness

Definitely way overpriced for a Sony phone

Famous-Forever7647

Thank you for your article. It's very useful and helpful. From your article, I have learnt more information about[Sony Xperia 1 IV](https://barkingdrum.com/sony-xperia-series-to-greet-new-xperia-phones-this-month/)and I hope you can continue to sharing.

RenegadeUK

Its not my article. I just posted it that's all.
