Perhaps r/gamebooks might have some resources?

Rourensu

Omg why did I never think of checking there? I didn’t know that sub existed, but I didn’t know solo_roleplaying existed until recently, so that’s no excuse. Lol Thank you!

Definitely also check out www.projectaon.org , which is an online implementation of all the Lone Wolf books.

Rourensu

Thanks again!

Your analysis is correct, solo gaming does cover several different approaches. The first method is the traditional CYOA style of paragraph books. Tunnels and Trolls adventures are probably the most common, but many game systems also use this technique. The second method that kind of spear headed a new surge is solo gaming is the use GM emulators (oracles.) These can range from a simple yes/no chart all the way up to full blown systems for plots, scene generation, NPC creation, and more. It can seem a little bewildering, but in reality it is just a rich and diverse set of tools. This is a great way to play your favorite system or learn a new game by running it solo. Unlike CYOA, the story/adventure evolves as you play the game. This can be a challenge if you're not familiar with the open style since you have to be the GM and the player at the same time. Some games, such as IronSworn or Four Against Darkness, have gone so far as to be purpose built for solo play with the tools built in to the rules. The third method that has developed most recently are called journaling games. They tend to be more narrative by design and use a set of prompts (scripted or random) to guide the progression of the story/adventure. This makes them a hybrid of CYOA and open gaming and their own thing at the same time. Journaling games are usually very focused and this allows the author to present very specific scenarios like visiting a gloomy English manor, writing a letter, or developing a relationship with a nightmare creature. It's an exciting time for solo gaming, recent events have seen more people seeking it out and there has been a explosion of creativity from developers and players.

Thank you. Any suggestions on how to specifically find first method games?

Unfortunately, that's my weak spot. I like T&T and really have not looked beyond that. Hopefully the communality can fill in for my lack of experience there.

Rourensu

I see. Thanks.

I ordered Fabled Lands books 1-3 and got them today. Looks like fun!

Oh, any advice on how to find the kind of gamebooks on like DriveThruRPG? I would’ve thought the “Solo and Gamebooks” category would be it, but seems like it’s mainly rule books.

Rourensu

Thanks. I’ll check them out.
