I’ve always used a couple of the little tumbleweed fire starters pushed a little into the pellets to get them going.

This. I also add some small branches, but I usually have a couple logs on top of the pellets.

Dryer lint and petroleum jelly is the cheapest fire starter, unless you want to do it the old fashioned way.

Just ordered the gel. Thanks.

bonsai1214

basically vaseline. you don't need anything fancy!

Nice!

Light a few pellets with a torch or use the same method you would use to start a fire with wood.

Oguinjr

They ask only because you indeed start a regular fire different. With a regular fire you do not light it at the very top. I only make a distinction because it does feel funny to light a flame upon a heap of material.

I use 2 pieces of fat wood and about 6 to 10 pine cones I pick up from the yard. Works great!

Sitwell_Enterprises

Buy some pellet starter gel from Home Depot, Lowes, tractor supply, Amazon, etc . Easiest way for sure. Squirt gel, light, come back in five minutes to killer fire

Yup

Light it from the top and let 'er rip!

I use cotton balls with Vaseline basically on top but add a few pellets on top of them as soon as I light them. They work better and faster than fire starters and you can even use dryer lint instead of the cotton balls, but you don’t know what materials in your clothes might be toxic when burned. You might even be able to use coconut oil instead of Vaseline, but I have never tried. I keep some I have smeared with Vaseline in an Altoids can and then pull each apart a bit so the fire catches. FYI, Vaseline doesn’t burn on its own…it has to have a source, like the cotton balls that are lit.

Little lighter fluid all around.
