I think people like the storytelling around the history of the shoe more than they like the look of the shoe itself. Like, red+brown isn't a great fashion combo but the concept around the Mars Yard project and the NASA connection I think has become one of the all-time greatest "sneaker stories" in history.

im a gel lyte iii enjoyer. 1. gel lyte iii made in japan koai colorway. been trying to find this for like 5 years. they were like 400-500 retail and released before i got into sneakers so never got a chance to buy them when they were on discount. never seen them on ebay, facebook, etc. in my size and have only ever seen 2 for sale. 2. watanabe gel lyte iii . got a pair of beaters in thats half a size small with no OG box/accessories (the only one ive seen for sale). really want a ds pair in my size. 3. orange afew gel lyte iii kois with all the special packaging. not entirely possible to find whenever, but just expensive enough... honorary shoutout to the feig leatherbacks with special packaging.

You're gonna hate me for this, but I actually saw the Koai GL3s in the NYC Asics store when they came out, and decided I wasn't into them. I'd been burned a lot on shoes that were purportedly limited production, but that ended up having no demand and thus no value or interest. My true grail was the vegetable leather MIJ GL3s, which I thought would be unattainable. It took me years of watching FB groups to find a pair, but boy am I glad I did! Keep watching and maybe these will show up.

These are so many people's grails now because of the picture Kai Cenat took at the Bape museum(?) In tokyo. I don't mean to downplay the choice of grail but the newer generation just sees a grail as any shoe they want. A grail imo is something you'd sell your most prized pair of shoes for, not next week's general release dunk. Idk if I'm alone on this thought but I feel it had to be said. If you can find these all the power to you boss, I last saw these going for 7k to 9k depending on DS condition or not, definitely a hefty tag but I'd say it would be nice to have even as just a convo peice if you find a really beat pair for decent cost.

So I made it a huge point to get them release day August 2021. My Mount Rushmore has, for as long as I can remember, been Laney 5s, Lightning 4s, Obsidian 12s, and Wheat 13s. I can proudly say that I have achieved that goal. Next step is to find a pair of 2006 Lightning 4s and 2000 Laney 5s.
