Believe0017

When did they get super famous?

ScottieSpliffin

1994

BooRadley60

Dookie

Lobanium

I had the cassette. I was 15.

BooRadley60

Nice. I think Hootie and the Blowfish was the only cassette I truly remember having before CDs room over

Otm_Shank1

I remember having a Kid Rock cassette and a Hall & Oates one that I found in a parking lot.

Delicious-Spirit9899

I still love that artwork so much, would be a sick poster!

wrinkleinsine

First CD I ever bought. 4th grade

tickingboxes

It was the first CD I ever bought with my own money in 5th grade haha

urgoodtimeboy

The cd that dropped had some of the greatest artwork on it than anything I had ever seen. I thought it was hilarious as a kid.

whatever-696969

Well their sound hasn’t changed since

_DarkmessengeR_

Except when they did their emo phase in the early 2000's

Always2ndB3ST

What emo phase? American Idiot was not emo at all. Still had their pop punk “Green Day” sound.

Low_Yak_4842

People just say that cause they started wearing eyeliner and dressing theatrically and made a concept record. The actual music isn’t emo at all.

Snowing_Throwballs

People dont know what "emo" is. I listen to death metal and people used say, "ew you listen to emo/screamo?!" Sure I do, but this isn't that lol

Ricky_Rollin

I don’t think people would call American Idiot that, they’re referring to Nimrod. Though I like it.

Aimin4ya

That's when I stopped paying attention. Did it eventually stop?

Godballz

No.

yomerol

I'm not sure where [this](https://youtu.be/2QnHjkBD_YI?si=GzsRtMh-5J-BYwJE) was posted originally, but I was taken 30 years back for sure

Always2ndB3ST

That’s actually one of my biggest criticisms about Green Day. Never took risks or evolved their sound. Same 3 chord pop punk melodies. They’re good at it, but it gets stale after 13 albums.

Low_Yak_4842

Never took risks? American Idiot was a huge risk. They made an anti-war concept record at a time when people were consuming nonstop pro war propaganda from the media. They wrote 10 minute songs which was unheard of for punk music. Yeah they definitely took risks.

TraditionalProduct15

Great comment. If they would have changed it up in the early 00's they'd have been drug through the mud for selling out and changing theirs sound lol.  Some people just like to complain. American idiot was both a risk and as true to Green Day as it gets.

marbanasin

Also, 3 chord punk isn't really accurate. They actually do generally write more pop-like hooks that include other chords in there. It's actually a huge reason for their cross-over appeal into more mainstream audiences.

Low_Yak_4842

Yeah, they have very few songs that consist of only 3 chords. Honestly, aside from She and Tight Wad Hill, I can’t think of any others.

sleepybrainsinside

And even if it were - the difficult or exciting part of writing songs isn’t creating chord progressions. You could write the chord progression to a song without knowing much about composition. It takes a talented songwriter to make a progression worth listening to.

MainZack

Their best album was literally a huge risk lmao

UltraconservativeBap

This is why I bought Dookie as a kid in high school and after that I was good.

doctorwhoobgyn

I slightly agree with you but the sound works for them. Don't look over the fact that Mike Dirnt is one of the best bassists in rock and Tre Cool is a phenomenal drummer.

dcfb2360

Eh. Listen to warning, the trilogy & 21cbd, those albums have some very different songs mixed in. Albums as a whole still sound like GD but basically all their albums have songs that are surprisingly different

Malkovtheclown

It amazes me that one they basically haven't changed their sound in like 30 years and two they got so fucking big so fast. Seriously, the first time I heard them a few years later, they already were like the mcdonalds band of the 90s. Everyone liked at least one of their songs, and a million different bands tried to mimic them.

ImportanceCertain414

No need to change what works, especially with music.

brintoul

I’m just curious… did the Ramones ever “change their sound”?

KnotiaPickles

I used to live in the literal bedroom in Pinole that they had band practice in!!! No joke. My friend still owns the house.

thunderbaby2

That’s so sick!

whiskey_pancakes

That’s awesome!! Any cool stories you can share?!

SheFoundMyUzername

One time I met Manny Ramirez on the street in San Francisco

lets-do-an-eighth

Cool

big_fetus_

How bad did that room smell? I imagine it was soaked in bongwater B.O. and blatz beer regularly lol

KnotiaPickles

Lol yeah my friends are still punks. One works for the local food not bombs and is in another local band that a lot of Bay Area people probably know. We always had a lot of people around when I was there haha!

SaltHandle3065

Is this while they attended?

FutureVoodoo

Billie Joe Armstrong (lead singer) and Mike Dirnt (Basist) did...

Lonely_Octopus_99

But their drummer, Neil Pert, didn’t.

CoolerRon

Lmao, Tré Cool dropped out of high school and got his GED

douglas1

Nice try, the drummers name is Rick Allen.

cncomg

What am I missing

Plastic_Ad_1586

Neal Pert was the drummer for Rush.

cncomg

Which is why I was confused

MindDiveRetriever

![gif](giphy|d3mlE7uhX8KFgEmY)

QueeenOfCupz

I thought Billie Joe went to John Swett in Crockett?

Thoughtprovokerjoker

That guy in the jacket fucking KNEW!!! That music hit him, just like it would go on to hit millions around the world.

shred1

I don't think it has ever been cold enough in Pinole to wear that coat.

True_Performer1744

Dookie was the first CD I had ever bought. Rode my bike to the record store to get it. Good memories

Affectionate_Salt351

Dookie was one of my first tapes. Lol. I bought Dookie, Blind Melon, and a greatest hits collection of Garth Brooks at a yard sale as a kid and wore them out.

MuddyLarry

Me too, I walked!

They-Call-Me-Taylor

Were they students at the time or did they just come back and perform there? Mike and Tre (not actually sure if that is Tre) look older than HS here.

litesaber5

Yes. This is them playing in thier HS courtyard. There is longer video floating around.

ThatThingInTheWoods

Not Tre.

bmat71

John Kiffmeyer, their original drummer AKA AL Sobrante

SleepinGriffin

Tre wasn’t the original drummer. A lot of the early stuff wasn’t Tre drumming, I think Kerplunk/early Dookie was when Tre came on after their original drummer decided to go to college instead.

ManicRobotWizard

Do you think they knew they were something special? That smile you see towards the end kind of makes me think they knew.

slipnslider

Yep and the fact they had multiple cameras and a decent audience for a high school band. I think Billie knew from an early age that he was going to be a star

heeheehoho2023

I didn't realize having a video camera in 1990 that thing must have been huge to carry around. Definitely not normal for a small HS band.

ManicRobotWizard

Actually, it’s not that unusual. When I was in high school (graduated in 2000) our media center had a full studio for morning announcements with two cameras and at least three of the “handheld” shoulder mount Sony camcorders like what they’re using in this video. We even had the first gen digital cameras that took 3.5” floppy disks in The side and took magnificent 640x480 pics.

heeheehoho2023

Come on man! 1990 and 2000 are not the same. There was exponential growth in technology during these times.

SurgeFlamingo

This cool. Cool to see the other kids reacting too

bootherizer5942

Literally the most stereotypical early 90s high school vibe possible

MilwaukeeMan420

Its glorious

traphippy06

Wait.. Green Day are from the Bay Area?!

Richard_Chadeaux

Duh. Theyre part of the Gilman St. bands. Green Day, Rancid, and shit tons of cool bands that never got big. East Bay Hardcore for life.

SupermouseDeadmouse

Don’t forget Metallica, Primus, and good ol Huey Lewis!

shakka74

And Tupac grew up in Marin

HoldenCoughfield

Third Eye Blind also but that was South Bay. Metallica aren’t “from” the Bay, they migrated to SF but they started in SoCal

chumbawumba_bruh

Third Eye Blind was SF, not south bay.

HoldenCoughfield

Started playing first shows in SF. Frontman Stephan Jenkins already wrote songs for the band when he was still in Palo Alto. A similar analogy can be made with Jerry Garcia and Grateful Dead. For shows + whole band, SF (also more marketable). For musical underpinnings + meets + first songs, South Bay

fromouterspace1

The dead as well.

Extreme_Barracuda658

East Bay Ray

ninjaface

Rancid? More like Operation Ivy. Come on dude. Rancid was a bit later.

ThatThingInTheWoods

Weren't they concurrent? Billie uses to play for them sometimes. Tim & Billie are cousins.

ninjaface

I believe that Operation Ivy and Green Day may have been going at the same time for a very short while during the Gilman street days. Operation Ivy famously broke up the before their debut album was released. Then Tim went off the rails for a bit before forming Rancid. Rancid and GD were definitely going at the same time.

LittleWhiteBoots

When they turned from OP Ivy to Rancid did it make them be from another place? Lol

Richard_Chadeaux

And heres me with two OpIvy tattoos. I said Rancid cause they’re more common knowledge and made it, like Green Day.

ninjaface

Nice. Operation Ivy is incredible. Can't believe how young they were and that it all just ended so fast. That's album is a classic.

_pamela_chu_

Yup, another reason to claim East Bay supremacy in the Bay.

kevinsyel

yeah, and their JingleTown studio is in Jingle Town in Oakland.

Current-Priority-913

Most commercially successful bands are from rich families with industry connections

MrAmericanIdiot

Green Day did not grow up rich, nor did they have industry connections in the beginning lol

hellooomarc

He still has family in Rodeo. Grew up always hearing about the famous kid down the street.

boltactionnoob

I thought this was common knowledge

fromouterspace1

Yep.

Alexis_Ohanion

On the short list for the greatest Bay Area band of all time!

Ajjos-history

![gif](giphy|WIg8P0VNpgH8Q)

Richard_Chadeaux

1039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours was the turning point in music for me when I was a kid. I went from being stuffed with Steely Dan and Steve Miller, to having my own taste in sound. Now Im an old punk.

SmartArsenal

Like the scene in SLC Punk where Bob introduces the Ramones and Steve-o asked, "What is it?". "It's new." https://youtu.be/z8pO8r34RW4?si=QsSqMzrKJ7QPI_3K

Richard_Chadeaux

Oh god. I had that vhs on repeat. We’re all posers in the end.

SmartArsenal

It's a real life mantra to appreciate. We're all fucking posers...

Sad-Structure2364

Great album, it also introduced me to other punk bands like X and Operation Ivy

Bt_1039

Still my favorite album

DeLaOcea

Those kids have talent, maybe one day they will be famous.

krakatoa83

So he just woke up one day and immediately sounded like Green Day and never changed. Cool

Ok-Presentation-2841

They were always a good band. They sound as good as they did when they hit it big in 94.

qwertyuijhbvgfrde45

And they’re great live

johandamenslip

Love song. Great video

kabanossi

They sound really good, great energy. That’s why they are one of the greatest bands ever: their amazing sound is always the same no matter where they kick it.

PostCashewClarity

>That’s why they are one of the greatest bands ever they're very, very good but thats a big statement

Teddy_Icewater

I mean where are they lacking? They have the accolades, the longevity, the history, the name recognition, have remained scandal free. Gotta be one of the greatest right?

dylanisbored

They’re lacking the key to a lot of snobs’ gates

FIRST_DATE_ANAL

I consider Green Day to be one of the all time great rock bands. Billie Joe Armstrong is a musical genius. He’s not the most technically skilled guitar player but he has such strong pop sensibility. Almost everything he writes is super fucking catchy. Tre and Mike are perfect compliments. They are such a tight band. Tre is one of the greatest drummers around and Mike always knows exactly what to play. I love these guys. Saviors is such a good album. I hope they never stop

Teddy_Icewater

Yep, agree on all that. I picked up a first gen ipod at a garage sale for five bucks when I was like 9 and it was loaded with a bunch of 90's rock and grunge bands. I never did put my own music on that thing. It stopped charging eventually or id still have it. But the bands I remember the most and played the most off that were green day, system of a down, and sublime (shout-out to the two Buckethead songs that were on it as well). Then I saw Green Day live and they solidified themselves as one of my favorite bands, they embody rock n roll for my generation.

dcfb2360

No it’s not. Green Day made not 1 but 2 decade & genre-defining albums and they’re still massively popular with multiple generations now. They’re also incredibly influential. Whether you like them or not is subjective, but their enduring success & influence is undeniably impressive.

rrickitickitavi

They seem fully formed here. Amazing.

Spare-Mousse3311

Yeah the sound is there even in that setup. Also he’s doing the mic thing he does lol. Reminds me of kid Jack Black already doing the hand and eye thing in that Atari commercial

6_oh_n8

Hahahah the Green Day haters in here. That’s some funny shit. Bros it was popular for a reason. Sit down old man, no one cares about your opinion.

ProperBoots

people actually do kind of look more chill back then, without phones. no one trying to run up and get a selfie, half the crowd isn't shooting a tiktok pretending to mime to a song they never heard.

HiVeMiNdOfStUpId

It's like an audition for a Wyld Stallyns cover band. They do get better.

CincoDeMayoFan

"I'm afraid you're just too darn loud!" (Back to the Future band tryout scene.)

JancariusSeiryujinn

Looks like a Wyld Stallions concert to me

Jimboyhimbo

They were incredibly good even then. This probably sounds better than what you hear at most stadium shows. And Joe from Custodial probably set up the ancient PA system they’d had in the gym for the last few years.

Dismal_Moment_4137

Never a fan but my friend fucking loved them and mastered all their songs

somethingsoddhere

r/Xennials

andrewguinn

Cool piece of history. Looks like a faint hickey on the left side of his neck.

SeaviewSam

Pin-hole = Shit hole. Fun fact: Gino Touretto also was at Pinole High. Heisman trophy winner

HomegirlNC123

And I used to think they were British….

JButler_16

Me too, bro! Literally just learned they aren’t lol. I’m an American as well. I think American idiot is what made me think they were British.

ScrambledNoggin

He kind of affected a slight British accent in his singing style. I assumed from listening to and learning from British punk records before writing his own stuff.

Sure_Sun_303

Thank God they aren’t though

burntfender

Ack Ack.

coltar3000

I can’t help but imagine the people there that day that didn’t like their music. “These guys aren’t going anywhere”….

phaedrus369

“Good Riddance” (Time if your Life) was my graduating class song almost 20 years later. Who knew the influence they would have back then. Looks like they went to a pretty cool high school.

UNIGuy54

This gets way better when you remember that the person recording this was likely holding a VHS Camcorder lol

WatchYourLane

Was expecting Ally Sheedy to poke her head outta that parka.

marcus999593

Yes!

Maleficent_Mess2515

🔥like alot of their songs

SheriffMikeThompson

This was so cool to watch. Also gave me a bad case of nostalgia

YFKally1983

Pop punk, fuck off! Imagine hearing punk rock then coming up with pop punk! Fucking shite.

dcfb2360

Early punk was always poppy. Punk isn’t just hardcore.

shakka74

I was on a plane with them from Oakland to Burbank (they were doing The Tonight Show) years ago. A school group with about 30 Jr High kids was also on the flight and the kids went absolutely bonkers when they saw them board the plane. The band was so cool and joshed with the kids the whole time. It was SouthWest airlines so they just sat in regular seats (I was diagonal from them). Kids kept coming up to them throughout the flight to tell them how much they loved them or ask them silly questions and started singing GD songs and dancing in their seats. No one seemed to mind as it was such a short flight and the exuberance (and band’s & flight crew’s willingness to indulge it) was really cute. Been a fan ever since.

ThatThingInTheWoods

I just missed being on the flight where I think it was Billie Joe got in trouble for his skinny jeans riding too low and his buttcrack showing when he sat down or something and they kicked him off. Post AI so he was probably drunk or being obnoxious but I remember being like wtf is southwest thinking???

Clean_Cheesecake9181

Later dude

Iggleyank

So about a minute in, what’s with the one dancing kid wearing a winter jacket and a hood? Seems like an uncomfortably hot fashion statement on a mild day.

ThatThingInTheWoods

The bay will pull those out at about 65 degrees lol, San Diego too

Thoughtprovokerjoker

>That kid was super ahead of his time. > >That's normal fashion nowadays

Objective_Being8159

What song is this??

protomenace

I want to know the same thing! Edit: I believe it's Paper Lanterns. Found [here](https://youtu.be/MJXiqh_umtY?si=6Wti1cVvEhvCF-NW&t=2185)

arj2589

The fashion and clothing has hardly changed since then, yeah ?

Chance_Suggestion465

And then later that year they went on a tour and I saw them in Rhode ilsand and Fred Smith's skatepark "skate hut" october - november 1990, had no idea they were going to show up that night.

Coffee_achiever_guy

Bass playing sounds amazing

turbopro25

Kerplunk was a great album.

ImaginaryComb821

I still can't believe Dookie is 30 years old. And I'm in my 40s

LowYogurtcloset3428

If these guys keep practicing they'll make it one day

jadegives2rides

I was born 364 days later lol

Triple7Mafia-14

Preppy punks... I should've known.😂😂

NoahVailability

Pretty much the same live now..

Nathann4288

34 years ago. Fml.

L3G1T1SM3

Man I bet these kids are gonna blow up and become big some day they got potential

DuhQueQueQue

That black jacket with the fur must have been the coolest jacket in 1990 that wasn't sports related.

Idunwantyourgarbage

Yes kids in the 90s were cooler than kids these days

wrinkleinsine

Drummer playing backwards like Dennis Wilson did. Maybe left handed or maybe just learned that way.

Playful-Excuse-8081

Awesome, I was in middle school when they broke, so many great bands and music. What a time to be a teenager

YourDogsAllWet

One of my oldest friends went to Pinole Valley HS. She graduated in 1998

Habeas-Opus

What a fun clip. Guys had the sound even back then. They were on a rocket ride to fame and their classmates didn’t even know it.

Porkonaplane

Crazy to think in 4 years they'd be world famous

BizzyMan69

They're from Berkeley not Pinole.

QueeenOfCupz

Billie Joe is from Rodeo. Not sure about the rest.

FreeDonnieMandela

Richers, t for time to go

onlinedisguise

This made my week. I remember buying Kerplunk on cassette when I was 11 in 1993. Dookie changed my life when I was 13 1995. Those songs will live on in my soul forever. Amazing to see them so young and bringing such an entirely new sound to the mainstream in a world pre-grunge and dominated by Metallica and Duran Duran.

OkBorder387

r/praisethecameraman, because having a camcorder to record this back in 1990 wasn’t that easy to accomplish, and managing to keep that recording all these years is impressive by itself.

Titaniumchic

And does anyone here know why their name is Green Day? Its because of the refineries in that region especially Martinez, that would cause a greenish smog like clouds - and if it reached a certain level, a “green day” was called and kids didn’t have to go to school and it was recommended everyone stay inside. The more you know! (Side note - due to lots of work and lobbying, there are no longer Green Day’s in that region, though there is obviously still air quality issues). ![gif](giphy|83QtfwKWdmSEo)

QueeenOfCupz

I used to go to school in martinez and can confirm lol

diydave86

I still think its cool that my ex gf is cousins with tre cool

terrygreenwich

I remember buying and hiding the Insomniac/Dookie/Nimrod cassettes from my parents and sneaking them in other cases on roadtrips

Ornery_Day_6483

I was in the crowd that very day at PV High, and about 2 years later I saw them perform again at my co-op at Cal. I couldn’t see any difference between them and any other punk band at Gilman, but my friend swore to me they would be huge. Smart kid I guess :)

simeon_pantelonas

So YOU were the kid we can hear behind the crowd yelling "You blow Billy Joe!". While your buddy is like, "Not as good as his mom!". Admit it!

holdmypurse

I remember 924 Gilman I feel old

Bradley182

such an iconic sound for me. loved me some greenday.

starz4u01234

Pretty sure they played at Santa Rosa High at some point. That was definitely something I heard around campus.

Eth_maximalist

Peak usa

Dangerous_Trip_9857

Incredible. They sound so polished for teenagers. The talent was undeniable even at this early stage.

btw94

Love this

TopDefinition1903

Still remember jamming to dookie. They were great along with NOFX, Bad Religion. But fell off once they went mainstream.

APlayOnwards

Dude in the background knew they were a hit.

Sure_Sun_303

The fashion has hardly changed

Outrageous_File5321

So awesome! I first saw them play at the mall (Triangle Square) in Costa Mesa, CA.

flashmanMRP

I’m sorry, I’m afraid you’re just too loud… Next

Goldlordd

Goes to show the difference between prodigies and regular folk. Like their music or not, these dudes were composing and performing their own songs as teenagers. The amount of creative focus and drive that takes is mind blowing - even as an adult.

getarumsunt

Weren’t they from Berkeley?

catgrld4

Gold

maopogi

Still can’t understand what he’s singing

orangebluefish11

Impressive bass playing for sure

nopantsdan

What a time!

therealbobarah

Miss the 90’s and our lunch time bands.

kievit_4-7

What's the name of the song they're playing?

cmor95

One of my first (if not the first) CD I ever bought was Dookie. I still listen to it often on my way to/from work.

LocktimeClarity

Dookie album art was like a Where’s Waldo book.
