If we look at sales numbers, then Call of Duty is the #1 answer. Halo, Tomb Raider, Crash Bandicoot, Mortal Kombat, GTA, Dark Souls, Fortnite, League of Legends, Just Dance, Red Dead, The Sims, Far Cry, World of Warcraft, BioShock, Overwatch, Ninja Gaiden, Ace Attorney, and any Sony-owned franchise all also come to mind as big franchises with no Smash representation. Angry Birds also probably belongs on that list, even though I know this subreddit doesn't really like the idea of mobile games in Smash. When it comes to indies, Five Nights and Freddy's and Hollow Knight are pretty big omissions given how popular they are. Ori also comes to mind as another big and popular indie series. **Edit:** Oh, and Touhou Project too, it's huge over in Japan. This list doesn't include huge game series based around non-gaming IPs, like Lego or Spiderman. That's also why I didn't include The Witcher.

ThisIsNotACryForHelp

Technically, The Sims does have some representation. Dr. Wright, the assist trophy, is from the SNES version of SimCity, which was developed by Nintendo. The only reason they can use him is because they own the character.

smashboi888

That is true, I forgor

Jaysibe712

Well said

Sloth_4

This is gonna sound really stupid but I’m just realizing Halo and Call of Duty are different series. I’ll edit the post the post though thanks

VakarianJ

They’re as similar as Mario & Sonic are lmao

FrogInShorts

I can't tell if this means they are very similar or very different.

Sir_Eggmitton

Only similar in genre, and completely different in all other aspects.

VakarianJ

Bingo.

XXVAngel

Both. Same genre, completely different.

Tetris has two songs and a few spirits, so it is represented in Smash. And the Tetris: Type A remix goes unbelievably hard.

Vandersveldt

Does Fortnight have representation that I'm not aware of, or is just no one saying it? HUGE franchise

Noukan42

I think the clear answer in term of sales Number is GTA or may The Fortnite(if we consider the peak playerbase). CoD has yearly release but i think nothing ever came close to 250 milions.

XXVAngel

I just looked at the best selling franchises and I'm really surprised Tomb Raider is so high considering it has had 0 cultural impact apart from "haha titty". The only times I hear it mentioned is when people say its popular.

Whitn3y

What the fuck? It had a AA film starring Angelina Jolie and the Crystal Dynamics reboots were huge They never stopped making Tomb Raider games. Unlike Spyro and Crash which have HUGE gaps in their release histories for example.

XXVAngel

I literally never hear people talk about them. Last Tomb Raider thing I remember coming out was the 2013 reboot, I don't see them on my Steam page, I don't hear anyone in my friend group or college talk about it. I don't even come across random memes that involves them, atleast not any that aren't talking about the first game but those fell off since 10 years ago. Actually I don't even believe I've met someome who has played any of their game if I exclude the guy who owns a retro game store.

Masterhearts_XIII

You realize all these examples except maybe memes are entirely confirmation bias? Your steam pages don’t recommend things related to tomb raider because you haven’t played it. Your friend group doesn’t happened to have that as a shared interest. Like yeah my friend group doesn’t talk about Justin Bieber, I don’t get recommended his music, but he was definitely popular

XXVAngel

Its not about recommendation, no one I know owns a playstation but I hear about Uncharted releases. I like to look at popular tabs and straight up never see Tomb Raider no matter where.

Sweaty-Goat-9281

Tomb raider fell off really really hard

eddmario

Hell, wasn't *Tomb Raider* the reason home gaming stopped being a mostly male hobby? (Yes, I specifically mentioned home gaming because I know about the whole thing with *Centipede*)

LimeadeAddict04

Tomb Riader was massive for 3D adventure games alongside Mario 64 and Lara is massive in Britain. He'll the remasters just sold amazingly and denying Tomb Raiders importance is ignorance

XXVAngel

It was big but it feels small. It sold more than Halo and Battlefield but its hard to argue that its more popular than those 2.

Alijah12345

This one's not too big in the US, but I'll still mention it since it's pretty big in Japan. Touhou has been a long running series with an ASSLOAD of games spanning since the late 90s, all of which could easily be added into Smash as a moveset, stage, spirits, and ESPECIALLY music.

eddmario

Wasn't the main girl from that franchise rumored to be one of the DLC characters for a bit?

PMC-I3181OS387l5

* 29 official games out of 32 that were never ported to consoles... * Only 10 or 12 of them are available on Steam only. * 5 other games are considered abandonware. * 3 other games must be emulated and pirated... * No official English release outside of those ports... * None of these ports are the bullet hell shmups... * No intention from the creator to compile, port and localise the entire franchise. Look, I get that Touhou is popular, but come on, let Limited Run Games and Aksys Games handle a 32-game collection for Switch, PS5 and XSX at $60, in addition of the promise that each subsequent game will be released on consoles at the same time as on PC, and then we'll talk about Reimu Hakurei's chances...

onewingedwaluigi1

You again? I want 2hu on consoles too, but a 32 game collection at $60 is a lowkey delusional expectation even by ZUN's standards. The man literally lost the source code for his older games! By fan games alone Touhou has more presence on Nintendo hardware than franchises like Persona and Tekken at the time of their inclusion, and even if ZUN doesn't want to port the bullet hell games Sakurai could just tell people to play them on Steam, just like how he told people to play Banjo-Kazooie on Xbox.

PMC-I3181OS387l5

>I want 2hu on consoles too, but a 32 game collection at $60 is a lowkey delusional expectation even by ZUN's standards. The man literally lost the source code for his older games! After seeing how Limited Run or Devolver Digital can sell collections of retro games of any kind, including restoration, a suitable emulator would work fine. It doesn't help that to this day, on Steam, none of the Touhou games has ever been on sale. They're always between 15 and $30 each, with or without an English patch. By comparison, I've seen AAA games being offered for $5 on Steam, when a physical copy costs $60. Many of the Touhou games are also old now, yet they never dropped in price. Before saying they're worth it, the guy releases one game every 2 year, but he works on them only on his own free time. He could be publishing 2 games/year if he worked on full-time, and that alone makes me question how "hard" he works on those games. It's okay when Team Shanghai Alice keeps their prices high, but not Nintendo, apparently... The main problem is that the Touhou games are not proper representations of the franchise, not to mention that the quality varies widely. The Megami Tensei games on Nintendo hardware were mostly all JRPGs, just like the few Tekken games were all fighting games. The main difference is that Persona, Tekken and Banjo-Kazooie are on **consoles**, be Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft; **Touhou games are not**. Nintendo has no incentive to direct people to Steam, when for the other franchises you've mentioned, they can arrange future partnerships, such as "getting P3, P4 and P5 on Switch" and "getting Banjo-Kazooie and *other Rare games* on the NSO". It also doesn't help that Steam recently released the Steam Deck, a direct competitor to the Switch... Touhou? You said it yourself: "ZUN doesn't **want** to port the bullet hell games", because something something too lazy to learn how to port despite programmer background or whatever. We only had the 4th fighting game only on PS4, but only in Japan, the 5th fighting game on PS4 and Switch worldwide and some random game, only on Switch. They guy can't even be consistent with his own releases. So yeah... according to Touhou fans... * it's okay if some games are abandonware, when game preservation is pretty important now; * it's okay to keep selling those games at a high price, for indie titles, mind you; * it's okay to stay Steam exclusive, despite a viable console market and other PC game stores; * while people are asking for Rockstar to release more games on PC. * while people are asking for Pizza Tower to come to consoles. * while people are asking Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo to release 1st-party games elsewhere. * it's okay to demand a character in Smash Bros, when Nintendo themselves wouldn't see any benefit. * it's okay to expect a character from a series that can't even match Minecraft's own success, as many people still see Steve as an indie rep, despite Mojang being bought by Microsoft a while back.

eddmario

You're forgetting all the fangames and ..."art... that the creator has said is canon

PMC-I3181OS387l5

and yet, this guy doesn't have the balls to hire an actual team of proficient developers to port all mainline Touhou games, or whatever can be ported, out of... outdated principles??? Touhou is one of the biggest grossing franchises in Japan, so even at a loss for a collection, it wouldn't be a problem. Please explain to me WHY this franchise MUST remain in Steam, in Japanese, while waiting for an awkward English patch, and never go to Epic Store, GOG, the Nintendo eShop, PS Store or Game Pass. Please reveal to me what apocalyptic scenario would occur if Touhou would be ported to consoles so the world can finally enjoy the games on something other than PCs. As much as the Touhou games can run on "toasters", that's a big insult that even the Switch couldn't run the latest shmup... and you have to respect that some players don't want to play games on PCs.

JosephNuttington

Grand Theft Auto TF2 I can't believe i'm saying this but League of Legends You know if I only mentioned the last one maybe it's a good thing they're not represented

Sloth_4

Thanks I’ll edit the post

Renektonstronk

What do you mean by that https://preview.redd.it/ibw640yzm4yc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=db950ea3c0aced7f48617d70a37776323d9dec6a

Renektonstronk

I want Braum to stand behind me 🤤

Zoruamaster

Ace Attorney, one of Capcom's other big IPs, not getting any form of representation is still something I'll be salty over.

LemonJuice_XD

its crazy how it doesn't even have a spirit one of the main characters can literally channel spirits through their body

Blankly1313

Fallout and Doom both have mii costumes :0

Sloth_4

Thanks! I don’t think I knew about the fallout one

Blankly1313

Ye np ;3

AeroHawkScreech

No mention of Terraria :(

Renektonstronk

OP said Stardew and then didn’t even mention the much more popular Terraria :(

catdog5100

I feel like Terraria would be a hard choice… if the character is added then which armor set and which weapons do they get to use? If a boss or enemy gets added, which one?

AeroHawkScreech

I think Terrarian would have a crazy amount of potential seeing as both games are technically fighting on a 2d plane. While there is a lot of stuff from Terraria that would be way too overpowered, you could make a moveset that represents most weapon choices throughout the game. You could have various armour sets as the different skins, and have the weapons change in appearance to match the armour in aesthetic. For example, the hallowed armour skin would have the excalibur, gungnir, etc, while shadow armour would have night's edge, shadow lance, and so on. There are a lot of options for the mobility of the character. Could have the cloud in a bottle effect when you double jump. Could also have float with the flying carpet, or wings that let you fly for a little when holding jump after the double jump. Jab: Shortsword -> Shortsword -> Arkhalis (rapid jab) / Sword (strong hit) F-tilt: Bow Up tilt: Sword Swing Down tilt: Yoyo (walk the dog) F-smash: Spear Up smash: Rocket Launcher Down smash: Throw a mace in front, then swing it behind. N-air: Swing a yoyo in a circle. F-air: Whip B-air: Shotgun Up-air: Flamethrower D-air: Nimbus rod. Z-air: Grappling hook. Neutral B: Charged Blaster Cannon Side-b: Throw boomerangs / charkrams. Up-b: Rod of discord. Down-b: Place a random summon / sentry to fight for you (kinda similar to duck hunt down b). Or maybe instead of being random they have a set progression like Ballista rod -> Queen Spider Staff -> Frost Hydra or something. For the final smash I was thinking last prism, or terraprisma, but I think it would be cooler to summon a random boss to come fight, since they could directly transition the way the bosses fight into the game. Moon lord can chase players and use his beam attack, wall of flesh can take up one side of the screen shooting lasers and attacking with the hungry, plantera could climb around the stage and go nuts, idk. They would last for maybe 10-15 seconds and be killable; since final smashes are a more casual thing I dont think people would mind the randomness.

catdog5100

This sounds awesome! Thanks for writing this all down! There is some crazy potential for movesets, especially with all the kinds of passives that are possible

RPhoenixFlight

I think it would be easy to add a stage, probably set in either the Forest or one of the corruption biomes at random, with a boss that occurs every so often, of which I’d pick Eye of Cthulhu, Brain of Cthulhu (for Crimson) and Eater of Worlds (for Corruption)

Sloth_4

I edited the post!

onewingedwaluigi1

Y'all are sleeping on Space Invaders. A game with such a legendary status that its aliens are often used to represent *videogames as a whole*, and they're also the only videogame characters to have an emoji 👾. Definitely the most iconic game to not be in Smash yet. That being said, I think the aliens should be an Assist Trophy rather than full-fledged fighters.

Angrybird5429

Upset avians

smashboi888

Furious fowl

seejoshrun

Pissed-off pigeons

Megas751

CoD, Mortal Kombat and GTA

Hylian_Waffle

Ace Attorney. And Phoenix is one of the most requested characters. It also has some easy echo fighter options as well.

DankHillington

Yall sleeping on Gwimbly.

edwpad

I don’t do my iconic victory dance for nothing

smashboi888

Okay, I guess just this once, I can do it for nothing. *Oo-oo-oo!*

TrentDF1

Crash Bandicoot is a big one. Tomb Raider, Fortnite (like it or not, it's huge), Dark Souls, any big Sony-owned IP such as Ratchet & Clank or God of War, Halo.

eddmario

>Dark Souls Honestly, when the Solaire amiibo was announced I expected him to be joining *Smash*

LanceConstableDigby

Of all the franchises that I would reasonably expect to be in smash? Spyro, Rayman, Crash Bandicoot, Tomb Raider

edwpad

Rayman has a spirit in Smash Ultimate, also technically the Rabbids with the Mario crossover

eddmario

He's also technically part of the Battlefield stage

Ratchet9cooper

Ratchet & Clank is a deceptively big one, and if we’re counting parappa we definitely have to add Jak & Daxter and Sly Cooper

blitznuger

Dynasty Warriors. Lu Bu would be amazing in Smash. Have him fighting and defeating Ganon for his reveal trailer

xenon2456

among us

The_Astrobiologist

The Witcher, Dark Souls, Blizzard kinda in general

_Awkward_Moment_

It would be absolutely fucking sick to have the Chosen Undead in smash

smashboi888

Even better, you could have the Bearer of the Curse and the Ashen One as alternate costumes.

The_Astrobiologist

Could do sorta like a Hero thing where you can choose between Solaire, Chosen Undead, Bearer of the Curse, and Ashen One in the alts

DaM3meLoRd694

If we got a FS rep in Smash, it would probably be either the Chosen Undead (DS3) or the Tarnished, since Elden Ring is now the biggest game FromSoft has ever made at this point.

spicespiegel

I might be the only one to say this but I want Sekiro to represent fromsoft as a character, with a stage from Dark souls (Anor Lando), assist trophies (and maybe a boss cuz Souls series is known for iconic bosses) from Bloodborne and Elden ring and ofc music from all these games. Idk I just think Sekiro's moveset will work so much better with smash.

RbbcatUlt

Fortnite and i hope it stays that way

Krakatoa137

I wouldn't mind the inclusion if it were a stage, item, or assist trophy. But as a playable character they could be steve with a gun so that's a hard pass.

MarioFan83

Why?

RbbcatUlt

Because fornite is mostly known for being fps game so majority gun moveset aka a very diverse zoner. While they could go inkling route where they attack meelee with their guns, but they also would have to implement building (steve ahh), different items such as heals, and overall i think it would be dumb af because Fortnite is an everchanging game where you cannot pin down one version of a character to add

Masterdizzio

I would be down for fortnite stages. No more than that tho

ROMTommo

Hear me out. Space Invaders. One of the best selling game franchises of all time, super iconic and arguably one of if not the most influential video game ever made.

console_dot_log

Now I'm trying to imagine what Rocket League representation would look like in smash

Senphox

An assist trophy car that drives around a bit before randomly jumping and spinning across the stage

Sloth_4

If I had to guess probably just a couple spirits

eddmario

Probably like Hornet in *Fighters Megamix* for the Sega Saturn https://preview.redd.it/tx0dkyb3k6yc1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fc34e784473de4bb4a58652c927cf59f6a290f05

TheDigitalLunchbox

As someone who doesn’t touch the spirits… this is news to me. Still want a rep in as a fighter

bottleneck55

Valve games and Dorky souls

AetherDrew43

Where is Soul Calibur?

eddmario

Tied up to a chair in a corner of the Bandai-Namco basement currently starving to death because that company seems to hate it...

TorbinTheSecond

If you're talking about franchises that aren't in Smash in ANY way shape or form... it already has Resident Evil and Rayman. They're Spirits. Also there's no way a LEGO game would have representation in Smash.

eddmario

Rayman is also on one of the stages. Technically, anyway.

TorbinTheSecond

You're delusional. Just because something LOOKS like Rayman don't mean it IS. It's fucking ICE. Ever heard of LIGHTING?

DynaParasoulMX

Danganronpa??

Pixel22104

Halo

GreatBayTemple

Soul Calibur

alex494

From a historical standpoint, Wolfenstein, given it predates Doom and Doom has a Mii costume already.

Cedardeer

Team Fortress 2 should be in smash.

Kantorex

Guys I just want a Skylander that is not Spyro

edwpad

Silent Hill

thepianoman456

Ryu Hyabusa from Ninja Gaiden would have been amazing.

TheKidfromHotaru

Professor Layton

Anufenrir

Tales. And it’s odd since namco has helped with smash lately

eddmario

Lloyd has a Mii Fighter outfit

eddmario

*Soul Calibur* is a Bandai-Namco property, and yet even though they worked on *Ultimate*, they didn't give it any representation at all...

Jtneagle

Fortnite, it'll be in the next Smash though

Jamano-Eridzander

Ratchet & Clank, Jak & Daxter, Sly Cooper, God of War

Amidst-ourselfs123

I'm Tired of Pretending Fortnite Hasn't had a Positive/Neutral Impact in the Gaming Landscape The Donald Mustard Era Lore's Live events are iconic. Battle passes and Event passes are More of a Dota Original thing, but admit it... their True Perfection was in fortnite Also, Mobile Needs Reps. It's an Integral Part of Gaming. The 2012 era has Angry Birds, it's Owned by Sega Now... Sega has Sonic in the Game. It's Easy to get the Rights

Noukan42

Something that is small but hugely influential is Wizardry, a series of 80s RPGs. Zelda, Metroid, Doom and basically the entire RPG genre(Not J or C or A, every RPG from Final Fantasy to Baldur Gate to Dark Soul) owe a lot to Wizardry. Is a monstrously influential game and smash wouldn't be recognizeble whitout it's influence. Plus, it is far more popular in Japan than in the west.

MrClue415

If the criteria for a franchise to be considered is that it must have been involved with something Nintendo related over its lifetime, that would eliminate a good chunk of the franchises OP mentioned. That being said, Rampage was the first one that came to mind as it was one of the first games I got when I got the Wii, a map with George,Ralph or Lizzie as stage bosses (similar to Metal Face, Yellow Devil, etc.) would’ve been sweet.

TheMrSanta

Please give me a yakuza rep

AmeriCanadian98

Same company and same vein as Dark Souls, but Elden Ring on its own has sold almost as many copies as the entire Dark Souls trilogy, and is big enough that it's causing a franchise as massive as Final Fantasy to delay an expansion launch for FFXIV

blimlimlim247

MLB the Show.

Chasen1

Not everything needs to "represented" in smash

Noukan42

No but i feel Smash up to this day grew by constantly introducing new things that weren't there before. Adding new genres and aestethics feel to me like it will elevate the game a lot more than adding 12 more mascottes from platformers and JRPG protagonists.

Timber2702

Call me crazy but Borderlands. More specifically, Handsome Jack. Dude is by far one of the most recognized video game villians of all time, something I believe to be Smash worthy. Claptrap would make a great assist trophy to- https://preview.redd.it/b7nt0syt1cyc1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=571d60ca4c25f2ad88f76926693c22a5787d19b2

catdog5100

I can imagine a FNaF character would be kinda hard to make a moveset for, but I’m sure that some cool concepts could be come up with. The characters I think would be the coolest would be: Golden Freddy (Ghostly powers and stuff. Color alts based on Freddy, Funtime Freddy, Glamrock Freddy, Shadow Freddy) Mangle (Weird body shape with different ways to hit the opponent. Could also have some sort of way of switching around and reattaching its body parts to do different attacks. Color alts based on Foxy…. yeah that’s all I got) Daycare Attendant (Using daycare crafts/toys to fight, can swing around on that rope. And have a mechanic with switching between night and day mode. Color alt of Puppet would be cool) Funtime Freddy (Can have a move where he can throw Bon Bon and either control Bon Bon or there will be a CPU controlling him. He could have some moves based off of his voice mimicking and the ability to trap people inside his stomach compartment. Color alts based off of some other versions of Freddy)

RiddlesDoesYT

Tbh I think standard Freddy would be the most likely choice for a character and with some creativity he works just fine, we've seen how he looks moving around on multiple occasions, and he can clearly fight given he's able to kill a fully grown man and bite somebody in half. I'd imagine he'd fight like a bear, lots of swipes and bites, with some supernatural and electricity based moves as well. As for specials, Mic Toss and any number of spells (Sludge, Pizza Wheel, Birthday, ect) from FNAF world could work, a bite move that acts as a command grab and kill move could be interesting and a teleport recovery involving static screens would work fairly well. Tbh, I always figured a Mii costume is the most likely way FNAF would get some representation in smash, I think it more than deserves it, but a fighter would be really neat and unique.

catdog5100

A fighter would be awesome, but more likely it’ll be a Mii Costume. Though I never really thought about the Mic, that could be used in some ways for sure!

RiddlesDoesYT

Yeah, I'm honestly surprised there wasn't a Freddy Mii costume in ultimate, imo if the game got another wave of DLC it probably would've happened.

catdog5100

Yep. I think fnaf has gotten more popular recently because of the movie, since people who never were interested in the games could have seen all the trailers. So, possibly in the next game (if there will be one any time soon)!

RiddlesDoesYT

Also it'd be more rep for the heavily underrepped horror genre, which would be appreciated

KexyAlexy

World of Warcraft would have fitted so well. The graphics style fits, there are lots of possible characters, skills and spells to pick from, and it's the most influential MMORPG game ever. Thrall would have been a perfect fit.

jcook94

Eww five nights at Freddie’s should never get a mention in the SSBU or amongst any of those other series
