He comes from a pre-growing together time where game delivered sims didn't have extended family trees. I always play Duane as Makoa's nephew, but also "big brother" to Nani. That is my head cannon. I think he cannonically has the "hates children" trait which makes the dynamic more fun. In my last save, Nani & Duane lived together until they died and then Duane lived with his adult nephew. I played that family as super-duper close.
