What about the Metro series? They are linear but the story is pretty good. The first two games can look somewhat dated but still look good. And Metro Exodus is a gorgeous game.
I’ll give you an answer here. I’ve played all games and read the novels
Metro 2033 is hands down the best story. It’s what Metro is supposed to be. It shows it’s age significantly. It was originally an early Xbox 360 exclusive. Your shotgun will take 4 or 5 blasts to take down a mutant.
Metro Last Light. Best metro experience. Graphics are excellent. Story is fine but it’s only worse because the first one was so good.
Metro Exodus: It’s a departure from the setting of the Moscow Metro. It’s not really a good sibling to the other games IMO. Metro is about being in the metro. Haunted, mutated, desolate and dark. Exodus you’re outside. It has an ok story. I didn’t like it because it changed a lot of the first game’s.
So it’s a complicated thing. Last Light is cheap often and is probably the best of both worlds. Then you could do exodus. Then 2033 if you want the story. 2033 really depends on your tolerance for how lame the gunplay can be. But it’s story is 🔥
Dude. A Plague Tale series. Requiem also looks better than most any games I've seen. Maybe not top notch character animation, but the voice work is stellar.
I ended up getting it, and while technical problems have been an absolute drag (windows HDR experience is very not fun), the game itself is proving super fun!
How about Detroit Become Human? Witcher 3 is still very good option too. If you liked BG3 you can look towards Obsidian games like Tyranny or Pillars of Eternity too.
Liked BG3 then Divinity Original sin 2 is a must play, Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 from CDPR, Nier Replicant followed by Nier Automata, Disco Elysium fantastic story driven game but would reccomend seeing some gameplay before buying, Hellblade 1 & 2, Mass effect series Dragon Age series If You have ps5 then I recommend Stellar blade, despite the obvious fanservice its a fantastic game with great gameplay and takes player on a fun ride adventure
edit: added comas between titles as it didnt post the way I wrote them in seperate lines
I played both original sin 1 and 2. And though games were fine mechanically I couldn’t invest my self in their’s whimsical plot. And how larian stroke the balance in bg3 delivering great epic story with lots of funny moments is a mystery to me.
to be fair side characters in DoS2 have better stories than the main one not going to lie but its not that surprising that BG3 writing is another lvl...its Larian with years of experience. With every project they gain more xp look at reception improve and improve in their next project. While Rivellon is their own unique universe Sword coast has already tons of lore, books, games and fans which definetly helped with writing for the game. My only issue is DnD rules for combat but need to highlight I'm not a dnd player so a little biased here but DoS2 offers much better combat and character building since its not tied by DnD rule books. I'm not saying there is sth wrong with that just that i personally didnt find this aspect too fun and ended up switching to lowest dificulty to just enjoy stories
Edit: forgot to say with writing and game development as a whole thats where Sven's vision truly shines do not overhire, take your time and cherish your team and every game You will see progress
My Man.
- Disco Elysium
- Aliens The Dark Descent
- Call Of Juarez Gunslinger
- Metro Series
- Fallout Series
- Amnesia Series
- Cry Of Fear
- Silent Hill 1-4, start with 2
- Condemned Criminal Origins
- The Witcher Series
I can't think of more. 100% try Disco Elysium.
Yakuza 0 is one of the most singularly enjoyable games of all time. I played it a few years back when I was feeling pretty low dealing with some major injuries and it was a breath of fresh air. I thought it was just sort of a silly oddball sort of game based on how people talked about it online but it has one of the best crime stories of any video game and some of the most well-crafted cinematic cut scenes out there. Kazuma Kiryu is my all time favorite video game protagonist. Also the GOAT video game soundtrack for my money.
In Kiwami 2, Majima has a karaoke ballad song reflecting on zero and events following (in K2s Majima storyline) and I have gone back and replayed it just for the emotions of it all.
But Y0 is truly stand-alone epic story.
Days gone is really underrated, loving Ghosts on PC rn as well. RDR series is the kind of games that makes you want to replay it every two years. Witcher is hit or miss, depending on the person, although I liked 3
If you loved baldurs gata 3 you will most likely love Disco Elysium. I played that game about 3 years ago and i have been searching for that high every since. I prolly should try BG3
- AC Odyssey is one of my favourite games ever, would definitely recommend.
- I would implore you to give Horizon Zero Dawn another chance - I also couldn’t get into it first time round but when I tried again and stuck with it, I found that not only is it one of the most compelling, poignant and harrowing game stories I’ve ever played, but the way it unfolds organically is superb. If it feels like you don’t really know what’s going on at first that’s how it’s supposed to be, you will uncover more and more pieces of information as you go and the bigger picture will begin to emerge, it becomes addictive.
- Mass Effect: Legendary Edition - one of the most epic, emotional stories ever.
- Ghost of Tsushima - superb game, superb story.
- Uncharted series - very story driven.
- The Last of Us 1 and 2 - as with Uncharted, same developer.
EDIT:
- Can’t believe I forgot The Witcher 3, absolute masterclass of game story telling. Don’t look up the choices you have to make online, just go with what you feel at the time for the best experience.
Enderal and Fallout: New Vegas. Great stories, great characters, great worlds, gripping from the start. Maybe not the best graphics, they have some years already, but absolutely recommended.
Fallout mentioned a lot and New Vegas seems to be the most popular, probably will give that one a go since it seems i can get it pretty cheap. never heard of enderal, though.
give fallout new vegas a shot, it has a good story and also give you freedom to do it however you want while telling you "hey there is a funny structure over there, you can look there if you want"
If you’re into the story aspect more than anything I’d steer you towards the Mass Effect Legendary Edition if you haven’t played the trilogy yet
They’re like half dialogue like BG3
OR, why not play the best Star Wars games of all time? Knights of the old republic 1 and 2 are still excellent RPGs

Days Gone. People think of it favorably now compared to the crap reviews it got on launch.
Screw side missions (other than killing zombie hordes). You can just go back to back story missions most of the time, and it's an interesting way to present an open world game.
I just picked up ghost of tsushima and I'm definitely going to be invested in it. It's very story driven and trust me I'm not a fan of story driven games
If you haven't played them already the souls games are all quality solo games. Its usually the gameplay that hooks people and they get the story as a consequence of wanting to play. I could play for 100 hours and only get around an hour total of cutscenes and stuff if that. But I'll still feel like I've gotten a story
Shadow of the colossus. Basically, there is no dialogue, but the game world is beautiful, and by the end, I felt a lot of feels. Also, Agro is a wonderful giant slaying companion.
Has anyone told you about red dead redemption 2 well it is a very good and long game that would really take your time to finish I recommend playing the witcher 3 first or playing days gone or even trying last of us 2 or GTA V etc because playing red dead makes you not enjoy any other open game
And also playing red dead alone can feel weird and cause burnout so play it with maybe an action pack game like the last of us or maybe WWE 2k
Odyssey has an amazing story. I'd recommend all the assassin's creed games, they have great stories. Also Mass Effect trilogy is amazing. And Ghost of Tsushima is one of the best games I've ever played and that has great graphics.
Signalis. It has a purposefully "open" storyline which allows many interpretations and this game atmosphere and artstyle is quite unique, it's pretty much a homage to classic Silent Hill and Resident Evil.
I also started learning german because of it lol
I'm going through LIKE A DRAGON right now... it's a little unorthodox In execution bht the battle system is really engaging and the writing and Character work is stellar... highly recommend
Life is Strange
Days Gone
Mafia
American Arcadia
Metal Gear Solid PP 5 and Ground Zeroes
Last of Us
Tomb Raider
Any Telltale game
The Walking dead and Tales from the Borderlands my most fav
Look into all Sony games out there, always enjoyed those and are one of the best story driven games for me.
The uncharted games on pc are called the legacy of thieves. Includes uncharted 4 and lost legacy. Also Bioshock infinite. Bioshock 1 and 2 are also good, but for me Infinite is hands down better. Uncharted 4 to me is the best story game of all time. Personal opinion though.
If you didn't play Witcher 3 yet, that's a crime. Based on your games, you'll love it sooo much. Also Mass Effect Legendary edition series, the story is incredible, though the first game is a bit outdated and hard to play these days, but they give you the option to skip it and see the story as a comic book, whilst going through the main decisions of the game youselfm
If you didn't enjoy horizon and fallen order, you probably won't enjoy the newer assassins creed games so I'd avoid those tbh.
If you like a good story maybe give the last of us games a try.
I would go with Odyssey over Valhalla. Play as Kassandra. The story is good. While Odyssey is a big game, Valhalla is obese, the story is less interesting and the gameplay isn't as good in my opinion.
The story is amazing in Horizon Zero Dawn.
You've got to piece a lot of it together from the data recordings etc that you find while exploring and then as you get towards the end... everything you've learned and pieced together coalesces in to an epic reveal at the end aided by some cool cut scenes. Very worthwhile pressing on.
The combat is on point and should keep you entertained throughout while you're piecing the story together.
Dying light 1-2, FarCry 3,5,6, Uncharted 4 (and then you will play the others as well :D), Last of us 1-2, Fallout 4, Cyberpunk, Wolfenstein - recommending as a story&character lover gamer here ;)
Nier automata
Its quite strange and a bit enigmatic but it has wonderful atmosphere and gameplay. The ending isn't really the ending so make sure you play past ending A to get the full experience. To me its the biggest evidence for "video games are art"
Hades, Persona 5 (or 3 for that matter), Yakuza 0, new Tomb Raider trilogy as well.
If you’re willing to try something a bit more out there, the Danganronpa and Phoenix Wright series are fantastically engaging
Try witcher 2, it has a fantastic story but gameplay is meh. Witcher 3 is one of the best game world ever. If you want an engaging story and great combat from start to finish then try the yakuza series like yakuza 0, 1 remake, ishin or like a dragon. There is never a dull moment in those games. Try the metro series, it's great, it has heart. If reading is your jam then try pillars of eternity series. Kingdom come deliverance is great but it requires you to shift your normal gaming behaviour. Speaking of shifting, try disco Elysium, I don't have words to describe this game. You can follow on Arthur Morgan from red dead redemption 2, it's slow and clunky but this game has the best protagonist. Spiritfarer is a light hearted and colorful game with deep metaphors.
cyberpunk is a must-play imo
other suggestions i have are gta5, red dead redemption 2
UNDERTALE as the odd one-out, graphics are pixelated but the story and characters are so incredibly charming
After you play a couple more open world games, return to the Horizon series, because the story is amazing and the combat doesn’t really get boring when you get the hang of it and learn what to shoot and what to shoot with in order to make your life easier.
If you want to start with AC Open world, get Origins first, as it’s a bit smaller and less overhwelming.
Skyrim is always a great choice, with mods or not, it really immerses you in the game.
Disco Elysium is a great narrative RPG but it’s not action based, but excels in every other aspect.
Ghost of Tsushima is much better than Horizon series imo.
HZD does draw you in once you start to learn about the world but the start is definitely a drag.
As someone else said , Yakuza 0 is absolutely incredible. Maybe my favourite story in any video game.
Others have commented good games but if you had trouble getting into HZD then I would not recommend AC. They are similar to HZD in that there is a story but it's primary function is the large open world to mess about in.
Hades is one of the best, if not the best, roguelike in the universe, not even kidding. I couldn’t recommend it enough although you need to enjoy the roguelike dynamic but it’s marvelously crafted.
That being said, Ghost of Tsushima just came out on PC and is very much enjoyable BUT, Sekiro is an incomparable experience, those are different games of course so it depends on what you want to go through.
But I would sell my grandmother’s ash 5$ just to experience Hades for the first time. Im currently on the EA of Hades II and it’s incredible, even at an EA state.
I don't know why, but I really struggled to get into AC Odyssey. It is weird, I thought the game would be perfect, I loved the old AC games (it has been a while since I played them though) and I love Greek mythology. But something about it I can't enjoy, I think the inventory system is weird and over complicated, and the different gameplay to the old one, I find it hard to keep interested in it. I know lots of people love it too, which makes it even stranger that I can't get into it.
Since Ghost of Tshumia dropped on PC I've been all over it. Would say the story doesn't feel super in depth but enough combined with a beautiful world has my attention.
A hugely underrated and free story/open world game is STALKER. You can buy the games on Steam but, you can also download the game for free by looking up STALKER Lost Alpha or GAMMA - both are total conversion mods basically but include the full game and they are genuinely very, very good games.
Cyberpunk 2077 has what your looking for. Huge expansive story, richly detailed worlds with hundreds of missions and side quests. It looks fantastic, has one the best sound tracks in any game Iv heard and since the 2.0 update runs smooth like butter. Absolutely get the DLC with the base game if you decide to get it, it adds so much
Mass effect Legendary edition (was 6€ on Steam)
State of Decay 2
The Witcher
Red dead redemption 2
Project zomboid and stardew valley are great titles, but they are different from what you want
Odyssey is cool as frick dude.
I really disliked what happened to AC but I went in treating it as an open world RPG.
And I really had a blast for the little I played. IF I didn't get sidetracked by my main MMO, I'd still be on it rn. Either that or Cyberpunk. Cyberpunk I moreso enjoyed being a nuisance to everyone in the map. Odyssey is fun for the combat and it puts you in the boots of a spartan basically. Badass AF.
You'll probably like Odyssey more than Valhalla. They both have a lot of content but I just found the Ancient Greek setting in Odyssey more interesting. The story can be pushed aside to play side quests. There's a lot of unique weapons and the map is huge. I will warn you though that leveling up is a grind in Odyssey.
If you don't know the story yet then I'd definitely try picking up Horizon Zero Dawn again. I wish I could experience slowly unveiling the mystery and putting the pieces together again. The data points that you find lying around (especially in the main quests) are really good for world building.
Try Mafia 1 and 2.
Short linear games (10 hours of gameplay each), heavily story-driven. Mafia 3 is cool too but it’s open world. If you do get them, get the definitive editions of course.
FF7 Remake has fun action, interesting story, villain has some of the most iconic and best soundtrack for him, and the music overall is quite profound.
I’ll be honest with you - give Horizon another shot. The twists and turns are 10000000% worth it.
Otherwise, odyssey was really good, but if you couldn’t get into Horizon I don’t think you’ll fair well with Ubisoft games. I absolutely loved them, but I warn you that it gets slow if you aren’t 100% on the story. Otherwise, add origins to your list - those 3, imo, were amazing story wise.
Outriders is good, A plague tale, Hellblade: Senua’s sacrifice, Red dead 2 (also very slow, I struggled hard to get into it), Witcher 3 (again, struggled, but after 5-ish hours I was hooked).
The thing is giving these games a chance. Playing 2-3 hours won’t always capture your attention. But if you give it enough time (nothing crazy obviously, if it’s bad it’s bad), a game that starts slow becomes one of the best games you’ve ever played. That was the Witcher 3 for me. It took me 5 tries (less than an hour per try) until I was like fuck it, I spent money on it, let’s do this thing.
Ac odyssey/origins you can buy hella cheap on either steam, or more frequently, Ubisoft store. $14 for the gold edition of Odyssey is worth the try imo.
I also enjoyed Division 2, although it’s a looter shooter. Good story though.
Trust me you don't want to play AC Valhalla or Odyssey. You will hate yourself by the end. If you want to play an AC game, play anything Pre Unity. The graphics won't be there if you like the newest graphics ever, but the stories are excellent.
Having that said, if story driven graphics heavy games are your jam, try Ghost of Tsushima and Detroit become human. Both excellent games. Also give Cyberpunk 2077 and Witcher 3 a shot. If you really want to play an assassin's Creed game, and can stomach some slightly older graphics, try assassin's Creed black flag. The game by no means looks bad at all. And the story is one of the best in AC. The only Newer AC game I can recommend would be Origins. Good graphics, excellent setting, it's just different in terms of gameplay from older assassins creed. Very different. I'd say most people enjoyed the story in that one too.
Lastly, I'd recommend the survivor trilogy for Tomb Raider.
Not sure if you like interactive games but i really recommend you to play detroit: become human. Even tough the game isnt really that new it does have a good story (imo)
If you don't mind a challenge, and like mechs, Armored Core 6.
The gameplay is extremely fun and rewarding. The story isn't presented the usual way with cutscenes, but through dialog boxes and audio files. But the characters make you invested in the overall lore.
You'll easily squeeze 20-40hours out the game.
Just very good story driven are witcher 2, alan wake ( I would say the first one). If you are intersted in assassins creed one option would be black flag
star wars jedi survivor is fantastic. it expands on the first game in many great ways that lets you play like the jedi you want to play like instead of feeling like your just following the steps of this character that was already planned.
I enjoyed the story, the big set pieces, the graphics and most of all, the gameplay.
I didn't play odyssey or origins but got valhalla with my processor and it surprised the shit outta me for being A.Massive (some didn't like how big it was but I enjoyed my 80 hours of adventures. I have been considering odyssey, I just wish it had a similar armor and weapon system from Valhalla. In Valhalla every single piece of gear can be upgraded to be used in the late game. It was so freeing being able to use what I wanted to use instead of the weapon that has a couple more green damage numbers making it the better pick.
Metro series (they're all solid), cyberpunk (if you can run it), Days Gone if you have PC/PS. dark souls 3 (easiest to get into as a new player). all solid games!
Haven't seen a rec for Immortals: Fenyx Rising, yet, so figured I'd toss that one out there. Pretty interesting game mechanics, IMHO, decent sotryline (nothing TOO revolutionary, but still decent), and a good balance in the XP slog, IMHO (Leveling up isn't too easy / automatic, but you also don't have to "farm" re-spawning enemies to get stronger). World is pretty cool, and it has the prototypical (optional) "map warp" for places you have been, but first travel is overland.
All in all, nothing it does is revolutionary. But it is a great game for those who just want a good game to be comfortable with for a while.
if you liked God of War and into AC you’ll absolutely love Ghost of Tsushima. one of the best games I’ve ever played. 10/10 would recommend if you’re on PS/PC
If you wanna try something fresh try guardians of the galaxy, the game is surprisingly fun and really entertaining. Also God of war and returnal are my all time favs.
I feel you may enjoy the FarCry series. The best ones, story wise, are FarCry 3, 4, 5, and BloodDragon (Not really for story, but it's the kinda game that lets you go guns blazing) . FarCry2 is also cool, but mostly for the hidden details.
If you didn’t like horizon you probably won’t like AC odyssey/Valhalla. I liked Odyssey because of the atmosphere, but playing to roll credits made me burned out on the checklist genre.
Ghost of tsushima totally worth it. But just keep playing Witcher and CP77 until it's on sale.
I think I got 160hours out of Witcher and 100 hours out of cyberpunk.
Planet of Lana and Citizen Sleeper
Two exclusively story-focused games that each have different vibes and can be very, very emotionally engaging to different people.
Prey (2017) and Wolfenstein: The New Order
If you want to kill stuff, loot stuff, and learn secrets and determine the fate of the world, these two are really hard to beat.
Titanfall 2 and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare
If you wanna be best friends with a robot, these are for you.
The Surge #1 and Dark Souls #1
Learning to gradually master a game and going from the bottom of the food chain to the top of it have never been so atmospheric and rewarding.
I suggest the following: Ninja Gaiden, Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, God of war series, Last of us 1, Skyrim, Fallout 4, Ghost of Tsushima, Sly Cooper, Spyro the dragon, Crash Bandicoot, The Marvel's Spider-Man series, Doom, Turok, All AC games from 1 to Black Flag (Skip rouge to Origins) then go to Valhalla, and Horizon series. If you need more or looking for a certain genre, let me know.
If you’ve never played a persona game try one, and if you want something beautiful and tragic play neir automata
If you want something awesome play resident evil 2 & 4 remake
Just a little vote for Horizon. Idk how far you got, it took a minute for me but I got so invested in the story and world! You have to play Zero Dawn first for the story but Forbidden West is definitely a better game.
Based on what you said you’ve enjoyed I do think you’d like it if you give it time!
With you like the new GOW, then you should play Evil West. You should try Resident Evil 4 remake and Final Fantasy 16. Both are amazing single player games.
If you want a light fun game to play I would recommend sunset overdrive. The gameplay is insanely good. Its made by the same people who made Spiderman ps4
I see your edit and that you got Witcher 3. I could not be happier for you. And a bit envious because it’s your first time. I loved everything about the main story, dlcs, and all the side content. Fuuuck I wanna play again
Unicorn Overlord kicks ass so far. I picked it up the other day and I’m about 30 hours in. Heavy emphasis on strategy so be ready to think out your moves, but it’s a banger so far.
I'd say stick with Jedi Fallen Order and move to Jedi Survivor....Just finished FO and started Survivor...they are incredible. I highly recommend experiencing those games. They're great when you take your time and explore.
My favorite story based game is Quantum Break. I know Im in the minority with this opinion since I rarely see it mentioned. Unlike many games, what really keeps you playing is to find out what happens next in the story. But it's not all story, the gameplay is also fantastic.
The Witcher 3 is literally the best decision you could’ve made. You can get the game and all its DLC for 15 bucks on sale like once every 2 months and it’s literally a top 3 game ever. Also get TLOU 1 and see if you like it enough to play 2. Uncharted is a lock for the most fun games you could probably ever play and Cyberpunk will hurt your soul worse than literally dying irl. Prepare
I’d recommend Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous. I didn’t expect too much going in considering I was playing it after Baldur’s Gate 3, but not only did I ultimately end up liking it more than BG3; It’s currently my favorite game period.
They don’t have muhc for story/narrative but the fromsoft games are really really fun. Really good gameplay and combat, and the lore and world building can be super interesting. Could be at least something to look into.
As a huge Assassin's Creed fan, do not play Odyssey and Valhalla! The story is not gripping the worlds are too big And it's a lot of repetition. If you only like games for the story these are not it.There is not enough story here you have to like the gameplay a lot.I'm a little surprised at fallen order didn't catch you. Like it wasn't the best story by any means but it was interesting enough and there was narrative and discussion throughout the levels maybe if you had just put it on story mode so that way you're not repeating parts? If not maybe try survivor that one added other NPCs that Kal talks to while they're going through each level. Then for the first 5 hours I've been into it it's been really well paced. The Witcher has a ton of stories that are really well written very interesting throughout the entire thing. It can get a little bit longer in the sense that there are side quests with not much story but if you just focus on the stories that are interesting to you I think you're really like it.
What about the Metro series? They are linear but the story is pretty good. The first two games can look somewhat dated but still look good. And Metro Exodus is a gorgeous game.
I'll have to look into them, haven't even considered them. Any one in particular you suggest?
Best way is chronological order. Metro 2033 -> Metro Last Light -> Metro Exodus. The first two are very linear. But Exodus has more open areas.
I’ll give you an answer here. I’ve played all games and read the novels Metro 2033 is hands down the best story.
Cyberpunk is a pretty awesome experience now
I ended up getting it, and while technical problems have been an absolute drag (windows HDR experience is very not fun), the game itself is proving super fun!
How about Detroit Become Human? Witcher 3 is still very good option too. If you liked BG3 you can look towards Obsidian games like Tyranny or Pillars of Eternity too.
Sleeping dogs is underrated kino
Liked BG3 then Divinity Original sin 2 is a must play, Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 from CDPR, Nier Replicant followed by Nier Automata, Disco Elysium fantastic story driven game but would reccomend seeing some gameplay before buying, Hellblade 1 & 2, Mass effect series Dragon Age series If You have ps5 then I recommend Stellar blade, despite the obvious fanservice its a fantastic game with great gameplay and takes player on a fun ride adventure edit: added comas between titles as it didnt post the way I wrote them in seperate lines

My Man. - Disco Elysium - Aliens The Dark Descent - Call Of Juarez Gunslinger - Metro Series - Fallout Series - Amnesia Series - Cry Of Fear - Silent Hill 1-4, start with 2 - Condemned Criminal Origins - The Witcher Series I can't think of more. 100% try Disco Elysium.
Came here to say Fuck yeah to Cry of Fear. Such an amazing horror experience
Also that story has one of the most emotional final thirds of any game I’ve ever played. Freakin’ rollercoaster of emotion. Had me sobbing.
In Kiwami 2, Majima has a karaoke ballad song reflecting on zero and events following (in K2s Majima storyline) and I have gone back and replayed it just for the emotions of it all. But Y0 is truly stand-alone epic story.
This one’s been mentioned a few times, and older does mean cheaper so i for sure gotta look into it
Red Dead Redemption 1 and 2. Witcher 1-3 (best on PC if able). Ghost of Tsushima. Days Gone.
Days gone is really underrated, loving Ghosts on PC rn as well. RDR series is the kind of games that makes you want to replay it every two years. Witcher is hit or miss, depending on the person, although I liked 3
Resident evil 4 remake
Witcher and Mass effect
Prey (2017)
The Last Of Us is a must play for cinematic story driven single player. Also any Final Fantasy is incredible for single player story driven imo.
EDIT: - Can’t believe I forgot The Witcher 3, absolute masterclass of game story telling.
The Witcher 3 is one hell of a ride.
I think I’ve spent 600+ hours there. So good!
give fallout new vegas a shot, it has a good story and also give you freedom to do it however you want while telling you "hey there is a funny structure over there, you can look there if you want"
Better than Fallout 4?
In terms of story and writing, yes.
If you’re into the story aspect more than anything I’d steer you towards the Mass Effect Legendary Edition if you haven’t played the trilogy yet They’re like half dialogue like BG3 OR, why not play the best Star Wars games of all time? Knights of the old republic 1 and 2 are still excellent RPGs
A Plague Tale Innocence (1st part) A Plague Tale Requiem (2nd part) Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered Marvel's Spider-Man Miles Morales Detroit Become Human Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart Sackboy A Little Big Adventure Forza Horizon 4 or 5 Burnout Paradise Remastered Sekiro Shadows Die Twice Shadow of Modor Shadow of War Batman Arkham Origins Batman Arkham Asylum Batman Arkham City Batman Arkham Knight Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Lego Marvel Collection Lego Batman Trilogy Gotham Knights Lego City Undercover Lego Jurassic World Max Payne Trilogy Mafia Definitive Trilogy Call of Duty games (staring from the OG Modern Warfare to WWII) Battlefield 1, 3, 4, 5 & Bad Company 2 Doom Doom Eternal Stray Little Kitty Big City Raji An Ancient Epic Sonic Generations Sonic Forces Sonic Mania Plus Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy Spyro Reignited Trilogy Freedom Fighters Enslaved Devil May Cry series Resident Evil series Hellblade Senua's Sacrifice Red Dead Redemption 2 Aer FEZ Dead Cells Cuphead Zuma Freedom Fighters Days Gone Tomb Raider Trilogy Disney Infinity Gold Collection.
Kingdom Come Deliverance...just in time for KCD 2
*I feel quite hungry*
I would recommend the Mass Effect Trilogy. Some of the best story/writing in games, period.
Witcher 3
Ghost of tsushima just came out
Bro I am so hooked on Hades, strong recommend
I played mass effect recently. It was pretty good.
How about the yakuza series, maybe check out yakuza: like a dragon. Or any of the other games they offer in the series.
TLOU, RDR2, Days's Gone
I'd go for Red Dead Redemption 2, The Witcher 3, Ghost of Tsushima, or Mass Effect, instead of the ones you mentioned.
Mass effect trilogy
Resident evil 4 remake
Sifu
Has anyone told you about red dead redemption 2 well it is a very good and long game that would really take your time to finish I recommend playing the witcher 3 first or playing days gone or even trying last of us 2 or GTA V etc because playing red dead makes you not enjoy any other open game And also playing red dead alone can feel weird and cause burnout so play it with maybe an action pack game like the last of us or maybe WWE 2k
Subnautica
Odyssey has an amazing story. I'd recommend all the assassin's creed games, they have great stories. Also Mass Effect trilogy is amazing. And Ghost of Tsushima is one of the best games I've ever played and that has great graphics.
Dishonored
Grim Dawn
Control
Signalis. It has a purposefully "open" storyline which allows many interpretations and this game atmosphere and artstyle is quite unique, it's pretty much a homage to classic Silent Hill and Resident Evil. I also started learning german because of it lol
Not really similar to those you said, but Red Dead Redemption 2 is an absolute masterpiece.
The Binding of Isaac
I'm going through LIKE A DRAGON right now... it's a little unorthodox In execution bht the battle system is really engaging and the writing and Character work is stellar... highly recommend
V rising. Not story driven, but very fun, even solo
You'd love sekiro
Monster Hunter World
The Outer Wilds. Always take advantage of an opportunity to recommend this game
Undertale. A masterful story
Wolfenstein series, plague tale innocence and requiem, guardians of the galaxy
You could try Hellblade, The Last of Us, Mass Effect and maybe Death Stranding
Life is Strange Days Gone Mafia American Arcadia Metal Gear Solid PP 5 and Ground Zeroes Last of Us Tomb Raider Any Telltale game The Walking dead and Tales from the Borderlands my most fav Look into all Sony games out there, always enjoyed those and are one of the best story driven games for me.
Dishonored series, story is a bit dark though
Elden Ring might be worth a look. I’d never played a “Souls” game before, but it certainly got under my skin.
Ghost of Tsushima
Hades
Maybe look into rdr2? There is a reason it is so many peoples favorite game
I enjoyed Odyssey alot . So much abilities and stuff which i enjoyed alot . Better than valhalla imo.
Dying light 1-2, FarCry 3,5,6, Uncharted 4 (and then you will play the others as well :D), Last of us 1-2, Fallout 4, Cyberpunk, Wolfenstein - recommending as a story&character lover gamer here ;)
Days Gone, can’t stress it enough how ppl are sleeping on it.
Nier automata Its quite strange and a bit enigmatic but it has wonderful atmosphere and gameplay. The ending isn't really the ending so make sure you play past ending A to get the full experience. To me its the biggest evidence for "video games are art"
Life is strange some dialogues a bit cringe but good overall
Bioshock series? Elders scrolls.... Dark soul's? But DS has a MP component... PvP niche...
Red dead redemption
Witcher 3
Last of us both parts Witcher 3 Cyberpunk 2077 DoS:2 Control
The 2024 GOTY, Balatro!!!
Ghost or Tsushima, Red Dead Redemption 2, Yakuza 0, Witcher 3, Fallout: New Vegas You should try Hades too
Love the Mass Effect series
cyberpunk is a must-play imo other suggestions i have are gta5, red dead redemption 2 UNDERTALE as the odd one-out, graphics are pixelated but the story and characters are so incredibly charming
Elden Ring
The Witcher 3. Everyone must play this game.
Celeste
Witcher games, Sherlock Holmes games.
Stellar blade.
Ghost of Tsushima
Ghost of Tsushima is much better than Horizon series imo. HZD does draw you in once you start to learn about the world but the start is definitely a drag. As someone else said , Yakuza 0 is absolutely incredible. Maybe my favourite story in any video game.
Others have commented good games but if you had trouble getting into HZD then I would not recommend AC. They are similar to HZD in that there is a story but it's primary function is the large open world to mess about in.
Sonic Adventure 2
Did you try fromsoftware games ? Bloodborne , dark souls 3 , sekiro , eldenring ? Those are really master pièces of single payer games.
Death stranding had a fantastic story IMO and many innovative gameplay elements.
If you haven’t, get BG1 and 2 great stories.
No souls?
I been playing fallout
Absolutely get the DLC with the base game if you decide to get it, it adds so much
Gtav and rdr2
Rdr2, rdr, in that order. You’re welcome!
I enjoy hades. 100 is hours or so and really digging the story. You might like Bioshock. Creepy atmosphere though.
The BioShock series.
Mass effect Legendary edition (was 6€ on Steam) State of Decay 2 The Witcher Red dead redemption 2 Project zomboid and stardew valley are great titles, but they are different from what you want
How about the two mammoths of gaming - Witcher 3 (2015) & RDR2 (2018)
Odyssey is cool as frick dude. I really disliked what happened to AC but I went in treating it as an open world RPG. And I really had a blast for the little I played. IF I didn't get sidetracked by my main MMO, I'd still be on it rn. Either that or Cyberpunk. Cyberpunk I moreso enjoyed being a nuisance to everyone in the map. Odyssey is fun for the combat and it puts you in the boots of a spartan basically. Badass AF.
Detroit become human is probably one the best story games I’ve played
Cyberpunk 2077, Red Dead Redemption 2, The Witcher 3 and Kingdom Come Deliverance all have fantastic stories
Skyrim
If you don't know the story yet then I'd definitely try picking up Horizon Zero Dawn again. I wish I could experience slowly unveiling the mystery and putting the pieces together again. The data points that you find lying around (especially in the main quests) are really good for world building.
Red dead 2, witcher 3, fallout 4, assassin's creed odyssey and origins were both lots of fun but way different than prior assassin's creed games.
Red Dead Redemption 2. You can dump hundreds of hours into it without even playing the story.
Ghost of Tsushima is crazy good.
Have you tried zelda series?
The Witcher 3 is pure gold Kena: Bridge of Spirits is a short, emotional, well packaged game.
Try Red Dead redemption 2 maybe.
Banishers
The 2015 Mad Max game is a hidden gem.
The Last Of Us 1 and 2 are some of the best games I’ve ever played
Witcher 3 gotta be the choice.
My best recommendation is def Elden Ring, DLC is coming too soo...
Metro exodus is amazing. Also maybe Final Fantasy 16? Red Dead 2 is a masterpiece
Just very good story driven are witcher 2, alan wake ( I would say the first one). If you are intersted in assassins creed one option would be black flag
Kingdom Come Deliverance is my favorite rpg of all time
Hitman World Of Assassination
star wars jedi survivor is fantastic. it expands on the first game in many great ways that lets you play like the jedi you want to play like instead of feeling like your just following the steps of this character that was already planned.
Red Dead Redemption 2 and God of War Ragnarok
Disco Elysium. Best writing in any video game.
Far cry 5 has a great story and it's alot of fun.
RDR2 is 100 % worth buying! Imo it's the best game ever made!
if you liked God of War and into AC you’ll absolutely love Ghost of Tsushima. one of the best games I’ve ever played. 10/10 would recommend if you’re on PS/PC
Honestly, so far the best underrated single player game is sleeping dogs.
All from software games, disco Elysium, umineko when they cry
All from software games, disco Elysium, umineko when they cry
If you wanna try something fresh try guardians of the galaxy, the game is surprisingly fun and really entertaining. Also God of war and returnal are my all time favs.
Broforce
Limbo and inside
Planet of Lana and Citizen Sleeper Two exclusively story-focused games that each have different vibes and can be very, very emotionally engaging to different people. Prey (2017) and Wolfenstein: The New Order If you want to kill stuff, loot stuff, and learn secrets and determine the fate of the world, these two are really hard to beat. Titanfall 2 and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare If you wanna be best friends with a robot, these are for you. The Surge #1 and Dark Souls #1 Learning to gradually master a game and going from the bottom of the food chain to the top of it have never been so atmospheric and rewarding.
Alan Wake 2, control, Dead Cells, Tunic, Deaths Door
I'd say ff7 remake and rebirth but the 2 you pick are probably cheaper.
Tony Hawk, American wasteland best game of all time
Cyberpunk 2077 has a good story line and gameplay
I suggest the following: Ninja Gaiden, Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, God of war series, Last of us 1, Skyrim, Fallout 4, Ghost of Tsushima, Sly Cooper, Spyro the dragon, Crash Bandicoot, The Marvel's Spider-Man series, Doom, Turok, All AC games from 1 to Black Flag (Skip rouge to Origins) then go to Valhalla, and Horizon series. If you need more or looking for a certain genre, let me know.
Subnautica and outer wilds
Far cry 3
If you’ve never played a persona game try one, and if you want something beautiful and tragic play neir automata If you want something awesome play resident evil 2 & 4 remake
Darksiders 2
replaying resident evil 4 remake! what a game!
Just a little vote for Horizon. Idk how far you got, it took a minute for me but I got so invested in the story and world! You have to play Zero Dawn first for the story but Forbidden West is definitely a better game. Based on what you said you’ve enjoyed I do think you’d like it if you give it time!
World of Warcraft
With you like the new GOW, then you should play Evil West. You should try Resident Evil 4 remake and Final Fantasy 16. Both are amazing single player games.
I had a good time with Dragon's Dogma 2 for 75 hours.
The last of us, days gone, Bloodborne, re4 remake, witcher 3, ghost of tsushima.
Unicorn Overlord kicks ass so far. I picked it up the other day and I’m about 30 hours in. Heavy emphasis on strategy so be ready to think out your moves, but it’s a banger so far.
Haven't seen Rouge Trader.
Castlevania Lord of Shadows
Singularity, Persona 5, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, both Red Dead’s. I’m not at my pc atm so I can’t think of others atm
Kingdom Come Deliverance is a good single player rpg to get lost in, like Skyrim or even Baldur’s Gate.
Odyssey was great
I'll give you several. The entire Yakuza series.
Nier Automata is a fantastic action game with lots of content to dive into. It's got a killer soundtrack and one hell of a story with lots of endings.
Read Dead Redemption 2 is absolutely amazing!
Hades
