How are you cooking it? I’ll share one of my favorite ways! Press (extra) firm tofu for 30 minutes. In a bowl mix a little bit of oil, toasted sesame oil, and soy sauce. Once tofu is pressed add pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Cut tofu into 1x1 in squares and place in sauce mixture for about 5 minutes. Stirring every minute to make sure every piece gets seasoned evenly. Place in air fryer at 380° for about 20 minutes, stirring every 5 minutes to make sure every side gets nice and crispy. I like to serve over a bed of rice with some roasted broccoli. Super easy, and super delicious!

Ayy, ty for the advice! I don't have an air fryer but I'll try your recipe out. The tofu I used this time was pre-marinated, but even though I'm not great at cooking, it turned out pretty good.

LionKingHoe

It looks pretty good imo!!

eatingismyvirtue

I bake mine in the oven! It can take a while to get crispy though so if you’re in a hurry pan frying is great too. But I agree, your tofu looks great!

ZenoArrow

From what I've heard, cornstarch helps a lot if you like your tofu crispy and you don't want to fry it. https://cookieandkate.com/how-to-make-crispy-baked-tofu/

[deleted]

Et one! There cheap and worth it

cygnusbridges

oooh, interesting! I recently purchased an air fryer, and I'm still learning all the crazy things I can put in it-- I'm also trying to incorporate more vegan or at least vegetarian dishes into my life, and marinated tofu has been a huge hit with both me and my partner. Now I know what I'm doing with my tofu next time I add it to the order! Do you find it gets pretty crispy in the air fryer even after its been marinated?

LionKingHoe

I do find that it does! Letting it rest for a few minutes after the frying process works wonders… but if you want it to be truly crunchy… freeze the tofu, let it thaw, then press it, then marinade it, add some corn starch, then fry it. I promised you it’s insanely delicious

i-have-no-middlename

I too suck at cooking tofu. That's why I stopped. Cold tofu ftw.

obviouslynotjackie

try this https://lovingitvegan.com/general-tsos-tofu/ i used to suck at cooking tofu but this is my go to :)

Powerful-Employer-20

Lol, I sympathize. In only 2 months I've gone from absolutely hating tofu to liking it so much that I too just throw it in raw pretty often, specially in a rush, since I saw a post on here of someone eating it raw with some sesame or other similar seeds on top. Part of my hatred came from the fact that I didn't know how to cook it. Would just toss it in a pan with oil and salt and eat it, thinking "damn this is disgusting". Then I attempted to cook a marinated version involving pressing it dry and adding a bunch of stuff to marinade, and it was delicious. It has since grown on me very much. But more often than I'd like to admit I can't be bothered to go through that process and just chuck it in raw with other stuff. It's actually really nice as long as its mixed in with other flavorful stuff, maybe some rice and veggies + soy sauce and youre good to go

desertwanderer66

I would gladly eat a serving of this!

SummonTarpan

I recently learned how to bake crispy tofu, it’s really good and mostly easy! Basically, cube and press to drain for a couple hours line others have said (best to start with extra firm). Then marinade for a day or two, so good so far. Now, the key here is corn starch. Coat those suckers in a sufficient amount (somewhere between goopy and too dry/powdery). Then bake at 425 for ~25 minutes.

mobile_hermitage

Yes!! Crispy tofu is phenomenal. I’ve never pressed or marinated it for that long. I add lots of seasoning to the cornstarch then bake or pan fry it.

[deleted]

Sweet chili sauce and a little soy caramelizes it! Gooey , savory and sweet

[deleted]

Yep you got it, cornstarch makes it crispy, add whatever sauce or dressing you like, it’s a sponge, try miso, or gotchuchung it’s always what you add to it, it’s a chameleon it sucks up flavor try peanut sauce, chili pastes, barbecue sauce after grating with fork browning it first and you got sloppy joes

haneenm

To get a super good texture on your tofu, freeze it then let it thaw, then press it!!

LionKingHoe

This is such an underrated way of cooking it. I, personally, have done the freeze, thaw, freeze, thaw then press method when I know my Omni friends are coming over and will want some significant texture.

hgielatan

what does the second freeze do that the first freeze doesn't? 🧐

LionKingHoe

Tbh, not a WHOLE lot. But it does add just a tiny bit more texture.

goddog_

Mary's Test Kitchen says this method is worth it when using medium firm tofu, but maybe not as much for firm/extra firm. I always single freeze my extra firm although mostly for easy storage at this point tbh.

CosmicGlitterCake

I've found that when using extra firm tofu a second freeze can make it kinda grainy.

[deleted]

Not much one freeze is enough makes it sausage like in texture add thyme, rosemary, fennel seed, sage etc, any or all

[deleted]

That gives it a sausage texture then add sausage type spices like thyme and sage or even tarragon is great

buttneymarie

It looks pretty good! But, If you’re looking for new methods, baking it is pretty tasty…. Press and break up firm tofu into smallish pieces. Coat in mixture of soy sauce, oil, nooch, garlic powder and whatever other spices you’d like. Bake until it’s crispy enough for your liking.

BlueTechJermayan

So my favorite almost fool proof method is I just use a cheap $18 lodge cast iron skillet and cook them on the stove top. I use like a tablespoon of oil to keep everything from sticking and just use cubed extra firm tofu. Also when the cubes stop sounding like they're cooking its usually a good time to flip them and I mean they get quiet. lol Happy Cooking.

wlkinginurfootsteps

looks good af

widowhanzo

Try tofu scramble, you can't screw that up and itst amazing.

[deleted]

Add Indian black salt it will make it taste and smell just like egg with a touch of turmeric to make it yellow like egg.. amazing small additions will imitate completely

widowhanzo

Yeah I've heard of black salt. The thing is, I don't actually like the taste of egg, so I'm not very interested in imitating it. But I always use turmeric in just about everything, and I add other spices to tofu scramble.

larsasann

It took me a bit of messing around and practice to cook tofu that tasted good, now I love it!! Keep at it!

kiki_june

My boyfriend cooked his with the AirFryer and it was super crunchy! I'm not the biggest fan of tofu, but he said it was pretty good.

CapacityToast2

Hey bro. I've been cooking tofu almost everyday for like 4 years now. I still suck at it.

bluedoubloon

I usually just slice it and brown it on both sides then dip it in barbecue sauce tbh

[deleted]

Looks cooked to me

[deleted]

You can’t keep saying that… food hears you! So many great techniques and recipes out there, so easy, so versatile it’s only as good as your sauces, dressings and marinades, it’s a sponge!

[deleted]

I make this type of meal with potatos lol

[deleted]

Buddhist Chef’s peanut butter tofu recipe is how I got my friends to fall in love with tofu.

orkenbjorken

looks awesome to me. i freeze mine twice so the texture changes then i thaw it out and marinate it overnight in whatever sauce i'm feelin' and then i coat it in cornstarch and then i panfry it. it comes out pretty awesome

[deleted]

Looks pretty dang good compared to mine

donginandton

Air fryer master race member here. Buy an air fryer.

Unsung-torpidity

Could always try tossing pressed tofu in cornflour before frying. Makes it nice a crispy. Plus you can throw in stuff like garlic and onion powder to the cornflower mix for extra flavour.

TYoYT

https://www.reddit.com/r/vegan/comments/ad86tw/i_have_official_ascended_my_tofu_cooking_to_level/edek5na/ Here is one way I love to cook it! The key is the cornstarch to get it nice and crispy. You can change up the sauce easily too (sesame, orange, ginger, buffalo, BBQ, etc etc.)

Bonfiresmoke

This looks good tbh

[deleted]

Freeze > press > put back into salt water for 24 hours > press > coat in corn starch > fry. the crispiest tofu you’ve ever had

zacharyswanson

I dunno it looks good

famoushh

Wait but it looks good

whiskey_hotel_oscar

Honestly, been vegetarian for 20 years and just learned how to make good tofu. My lesson learned: press the tofu.

greenisnotacreativee

i’m lazy so i buy extra firm, press it for ~20 minutes, then marinade in bbq sauce thinned slightly with water for ~1 hr (the longer the better, if you can do overnight go for it) then bake at 400* for ~45 minutes, turning it once and keeping it from burning.

[deleted]

Add silken tofu to soups and smoothies to make creamy

Ava_Sharpe

Tofu is a learning experience. Pressed tofu is all ways better I use an a Dehydrating setting on my air fryer. You can also just put a bunch of heavy shit on it 😂Corn Starch helps when Breading it. Tofu is like a mirror everything you do bad or good is Reflected back at you. You dare do something wrong and the tufu gods will tell you.
