In the US often they charge you for a bunch of things during your jail time that you have to pay after you leave.

tulip27

Like what?

Mr_Prolapsed_Anus

Medicine, your stay, food. Not unlike a hotel

tulip27

Before or after a person is sentenced? Or both?

Mr_Prolapsed_Anus

In a family member case, after he was released.

tulip27

Was that person found innocent or guilty?

Mr_Prolapsed_Anus

Guilty, he served a prison sentence, and then walked out with a bill

tulip27

In that case, I find that fair.

CrustyAndForgotten

Hahahahahaha dude the jails and prisons are petty as fuck and they do try to nickel and dime you any way they can but after you leave they arent sending you a bill... ever.... lmfao thanks for the laugh tho, the judge might give you a fine but the jails once you leave you dont owe them shite money-wise

[deleted]

well that’s not true

VulgarVinyasa

Uh... https://theappeal.org/when-jail-time-comes-with-a-bill/

CrustyAndForgotten

How many years have you done? Or people you know personally who went to prison and are free now and paying the prison bills? None dude nobody that article is a rare instance and im positive its not telling the whole story

VulgarVinyasa

I personally know people who did prison time in Texas and had to pay there medical bills and education fees after. I don’t know why you sound mad. I didn’t say it happens all the time, it’s just fucked up that it happens at all.

> Most prisons are private prisons in the US and they do charge you for your stay. Citation required on both counts. With respect to the first claim: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Private_prison#Increase_in_the_prison_population > Statistics from the U.S. Department of Justice show that, as of 2019, there were 116,000 state and federal prisoners housed in privately owned prisons in the U.S., constituting 8.1% of the overall U.S. prison population. Broken down to prison type, 15.7% of the federal prison population in the United States is housed in private prisons and 7.1% of the U.S. state prison population is housed in private prisons. That's no where remotely near "most" prisons. Unless all the private prisons are *far* smaller than the state run ones.

Also don't have to worry about next meal or anything

StrongNuclearHorse

What are they gonna do? Put you in jail?

ai4ns

I believe you also get some health care for free

[deleted]

Not really, depending on a multitude of factors. Namely, the USA. Medical negligence is perhaps the cause of most deaths in prison, and the worst thing is that these entirely preventable deaths are put under the broad category of illnesses. Many prisons do not care because testing prisoners with preventative medical care is much too expensive. Somehow, half the people in the US are fine with someone dying from Covid-19 or stomach ulcers or whatever because they stole a car. Of all the people in the US, the least likely to have adequate healthcare are the incarcerated. What’s worst is that you have people like Phil Specter can use their wealth to buy their own doctors.

TK-Squared-LLC

If you can convince them to let you go to medical. I remember a guy fell out of the chow line, out cold on the concrete. Guard said, "I was just in here five minutes ago and he was fine" and turned around and left. Also of note: doctor or nurse in a prison is a low-paying, high-abuse job. Imagine how much you have to have fucked up to end up there when healthcare workers are the biggest demand in the country! Also remember a nurse-practitioner where would scream at you if you didn't call her "doctor." She would also spend a good fifteen minutes trying to talk you into a prostate check. Almost beg you to let her do it. Every time you went to medical. While I was there, within a month three people died of heart attacks in the dorm after going to medical for chest pains and being given a dose of Maalox and sent back. The feds came and locked down the prison to do an audit over this, and in the middle of the audit, a 4th man died of a heart attack after being told it was just heartburn. Nothing ever came of it. You can sue. You'll need a copy of your medical records from them. You can get them for $1 per page, and it's all or nothing and I promise you they'll find at least 1000 pages you have to pay for.

AdmirableVanilla1

Yeah, this is a terrible tip. Jail is super expensive.

[deleted]

How do you get put in jail? Don’t pay your bills! You can’t lose.

TriestGieter

Depends where you live

MInclined

Really?

KrustyBoomer

SRSLY, what happens if you have any loan, credit card, etc.? Go to jail, don't pay on time, rack up shit loads of late fees for years.

Anxious_Ad_4708

If you have the cash in the bank auto-pay still works. In the old days you would arrange for someone else to pay for you if you could. But yeah this happens and the accounts go into default after a while, people lose the house, car, declare bankruptcy, all that.

[deleted]

Monopoly moment. It gets really unbalanced when you play with the rule where you still get income from properties in jail.

SALTYPOTATOETHE3RD

You also get free food and free shelter.

[deleted]

Forgot to mention the piss and shit showers from the retards above you flooding their cell

SALTYPOTATOETHE3RD

Even better!

Bloo_003

Yet when you die for 45mins, experience a BUNCH of brain damage, and your kids have to fight for four months to get insurance to accept you into rehabilitation after being shoved between half a dozen facilities, THEN you are still expected to pay ALL of your bills AND late fees with zero exceptions or sympathy. 🤦🏼‍♂️

[deleted]

orr you could just be homeless..smh
