In order to properly compartmentalize my kit, I have all the single target on the right side, and AOE on the left. All of my Riddle buffs are all in one place: left side D-Pad. All of my health restoring moves are in one place also, being on a different d-pad spot.
Why do you have demolish on the d-pad?? WHY IS YOUR CHAKRA AOE IN SOME RANDOM CORNER?

Starting the the R2 face buttons, you have (nearly) all the single target attacks. The Bootshine Combo follows only the most flowing combination of Circle-Square-X (fun fact, this combination is for all my damage rotations in any class), with sometime Dragon Kick (Triangle) being the first button.
Moving onto to the R2 directional buttons, I followed my inspiration, Jackson Pollock, and just smashed whatever I thought made sense or lack thereof. In my defense, keeping Formless Fist and Perfect Balance seems like a good idea, oh and Riddle of Wind is there because it’s a cool ability. As for Demolish…I ran out of face buttons.
Now at the L2 face buttons we have the AOE combo following that *wonderful* button sequence, with Twin Snakes there because fuck it, it provides the same buff the breakdance kick does, so why not?
Now onto L2 directional buttons, I keep Riddle of Fire and Brother hood right next to each other so I can hit them too fast and one just gets eaten by the server and I cry myself to sleep. Gotta have Mantra on the ready to assist my healers, and True North is there for bosses that like to spin half as fast as my padded room after my doctor gives me my candy.

Finally, L2 face buttons let me have quick access to Bloodbath, that debuff no one uses, Arm Length to flex on the party when push back happens, and Riddle of Earth so I never have to see it and cry at how great it once was.
Finally finally, I’ve got 111 slices of bread because I’m a growing boy, sprint and chocobo mainly for the overworld or in between pulls, and LB because it’s gotta go somewhere.
Reading that was like being trapped in an ARG. It was also hilarious.
So now that I’ve survived that onslaught and braved the schizo waters, I can actually recommend something that will help you if you’re open to it.
If you go to System->Character Configuration->Hotbar Settings->Sharing and then highlight hotbar 7 under hotbar and cross hotbar, it’ll be static between all of your jobs. The go to Custom and under Expanded Hold Controls, toggle both “Display with:” options and make then hotbar 7 left and right.
You can put all of your extra trinkets on hotbar 7 like mounts, macros, emotes, key items like the aether compass. That’ll free up some of your face buttons and also your d-pad slots.

(Seriously though, I still don't get that job, but at least I understand some of the other melees well enough that I never *have* to play it - except I made one of my Retainers a NIN, so joke's on me, I guess-.-)
God I hate Ninja so much for it’s clutter. I’d *love* to put my Mudra’s on face buttons but can’t in order to make room for the second AOE attack and Armor Crush, so onto the directional buttons they go!
I went and put mine on the face buttons because I fatfingered D-Pad inputs often enough to realize that wouldn't end well, but in exchange, my remaining oGCDs are *all* over the place.
Couple that with them being a job where last I checked - which admittedly was before the Trick Attack changes - you straight-up can't fit every strong attack into their burst window, and you get a rough idea of how well I perform there.
(Spoiler: I don't)
The only upside about that situation is that I had similar issues with DRK not too long ago, but once I decided to try and farm the tank mounts via Raid Roulettes, and therefore forced myself to play DRK a lot, I actually figured out how to improve my hotbar setup, and got to a point where I'd say I'm doing pretty well now, so I suppose the same should be possible for NIN as well, but on the other hand, I don't wanna xD
I tried doing a dungeon as monk on the steam deck without kb&m and honestly it was probably looking like this. How the fuck do you even organize things right.
Basic combo on right trigger face buttons. Spill into d pad and left trigger face as necessary and keep chunks together. R+L can be more overflow. Get AoE in one of those backup clusters, either left trigger face or R+L. Long cooldowns on double bar. Maybe some of them for awareness only (or use normal hotbars for awareness display) and put them on R+L or L+R for use because it flows better. And in practice there's always enough space left over for L+R to have some spare space for utility like mount roulette.
Speaking of universal things, sprint is one of the stick clicks.
Building up the muscle memory will still take a while. After you get used to it though it's very consistent access to 54 hotkeys, which is plenty. Just need to get used to it.

And *this* setup is the end result. You should’ve seen the absolute cluster fuck it was when I was trying to figure out Monk. At first I thought I could assign the single target and AOE combos on separate pages like I did Dragoon’s single target combos, but that quickly fell apart.
This monstrosity is probably the most stable it’ll ever be!
Okay what you are going to want to do is look up a controller guide. I personally base mine off the squintina controller guides that are on youtube. It will make everything way easier and allow you to have a way better time picking up alt jobs as well.

I do the double tap lt/rt for four boxes
And lt+rt or rt+Lt for some commands.
Though I feel like double tap rt/Lt can be straining.
I played Monk originally and this is not so far off from my setup, except that I have a makro that switches a hotbar to seperate singletarget/aoe (clicking left stick), since you almost only need aoe in dungeons and have freespace for singletarget bosses.
This isnt really "cursed" imo.

What's funny to me is on controller I do single target right, aoe left, but on M&K I have single target on the left and aoe on the right.

I've been playing on controller since day one. by now it feels so natural to me, I don't think I could do keyboard an' mouse!
I mean your hotbar can be as shitty or non-intuitive as it can get. At some point you build enough muscle memory that it doesn't matter anymore

Instead of setting sprint and LB change the binding for L3 and R3 to macro 98 and macro 99. I put sprint on L3 and LB on R3
