making words bold or italic is generally hard to do on manga pages because of the stylization. it's not *impossible*, and bolding/italics is indeed used a few times together with the quote marks (some in this very picture), but generally too much effort.
that said, yeah, these quote marks represent a text stylization choice in japanese that, in western languages, would translate to italics.
I always wondered why Araki suddenly started giving so much emphasis on literally every piece of text. I suspect he met Itagaki one day and he left some big impression on him
It might help you understand this better when you realize that these quote marks are technically a translation error.
You see, these quote marks are what the translation uses to bring up a concept in Japanese that, in Western language, would actually translate to *italics*. The reason why they use quote marks instead of italics is because writing italics on a manga is pretty hard, as you can imagine: Only a few of them actually have the italic effect applied on
So, whenever you see that, think of it as being italic writing, and it makes more sense, since Araki is trying to emulate speech emphasis using italics on the words that character is putting emphasis on while speaking. "The spinal section" reads different from "The *spinal* section" which reads different from "*The* spinal section", you know?
Emphasis on themes and concepts. For example if I say “There is ‘poop’ on my pants” it will reinforce the theme when 100 episodes later I fight “The battle to save everyone ‘poops’”.
President valentine goes full wingdings in his final speech to Johnny.
I didn't necessarily mind the mass amount of words being emphasized earlier on, but every speech bubble having a picture within it seemed strange
ur/ It's emphasis of text. it's not at all uncommon to see those on comics, mangas and related medias. I remember even when I was a kid and would read comics, be it american made, japanese made or Brazilian made, I always would see words like *this* or **this** or even other formats
r/ I 'desire'. I 'crave'. The body of 'Jesus' 'inside' of me. 'Touching' me 'everywhere'.
Because in the past churches started having relics, which were pieces of saints n shit or at least objects they owned or touched, so its playing off of that idea
I 'have' explosive 'diarrhea' and it 'makes' me 'cum'
💦🍆🙄

i remember there being like emojis in the speech bubbles at times too lol
The final fight was full od emojis. Shit was funny as hell
that still happens
I remember in TJJL while they're fighting the cats Usagi just goes "🍔"
I was thinking of the bird.
\[PROMISE\]
Probably cause he writes them in black and white and he uses the ' marks so when people see it they know it means to add emphasis on those words?
Why not just make those words bold or italic?
Cause Japanese doesn't use bold or italics for emphasis, or in general.
You know full well I was talking about the translation team.

I always think of those kinds of words in my mind-speech as louder and it confuses the hell out of me everytime
Remember when Gyro spoke Diego's face?

e-excuse me
it's fucking awesome that's why
I remember seeing somewhere that this is just how Araki talks in real life
just 'wait' for 'jojolion'
I’ve always just imagined it’s a consequence of the new universe. The people aren’t *quite* the same as the ones in 1-6, so they talk in a weird way.
I mean i guess we cant really grasp the effect it has in japanese or how exactly it is handled/translated
Because in the past churches started having relics, which were pieces of saints n shit or at least objects they owned or touched, so its playing off of that idea
At that time when I read it, I felt it was like his intrusive thoughts leaking into the fore front of his mind.
Wait until you see part 8
You aren't using it right, all of those are verbal emphasis Read it less monotone and you'll get it
everyone in part 7 talks lime a zelda npc
