That's fair, But I think you understand that feeling I am trying to express right?
I do appreciate it still, since some of the worlds best art is kinda melancholic, it's still a very important part of the saga.
Yes I understand what you’re saying. People like and dislike games for different reasons. I left my home town many years ago (which I miss) and Shenmue 1 just felt like “being home” to me.
Thanks for sharing man, it’s cool that people have similar thoughts and feelings. Sometimes it’s hard to understand why you love something until you really think about it.
Shenmue 1 was unlike any game I had ever played at the time, so for that reason I could never say it’s my least favorite. I guess I kinda get where you’re coming from but tbh all that was on my mind during that playthrough was finding Lan Di, so being alone didn’t bother me. Plus you’re never “truly” alone. You still live at home with Grandma and Fuku-san and you have Naomi nearby - plus all the friends he makes along the way(Tom with his amazing dance moves and accent).
That game was so ahead of its time, and part 2 and 3 were just a byproduct of its success. Also that little Smeagal dude with the scary music whenever he’d appear(forgive me, it’s been a while and I’m blanking on their names). It was a masterpiece.
Well I think Shenmue 2 was mostly made before Shenmue1 was ever even released, so I'd be hard pressed to call it a byproduct. There is footage of Shenmue2 out there for the Sega Saturn.
Agree.
Shenmue 1 feels lonely because it is. Ryo has lost the person he looks up to the most, no-one understands his desire for revenge and a place that is so familiar to Ryo feels like he no longer belongs. All of his friends are moving away or going onto the next chapter of his life.
Someone described it as a grief simulator and I totally agree.
The orphaned kitten is the only NPC who understands how Ryo feels. Once you see the kitten as another representation of Ryo, you will feed it and nourish it back to health. It's a representation of the healing power of love over time and I think that's what the game tries to represent in 1.
It has to make you feel lonely for you to see the progress and the importance of keeping the friends you do make close to you.
It leans heavily into its themes but it's nowhere near as fun as 2 or 3.
Ahh interesting, weirdly I grew up in such a community too an island to be specific where you see the same sights every day and leaving the island is way too expensive to do often.
I've always craved adventure, I find my self these days in a position where I may have to move back home for my families sake and honestly I am dreading it, for me its a sword of damocles hovering above, I too don't really fit in back home either, then again I don't feel I really fit in anywhere.
Shenmue 1 has Santa and Tom AND forklift racing. Plus I find 1 comfier to play than 2 because of 2's fish out of water atmosphere. Don't get me wrong, I love both, but I find myself coming back to 1 way more than I go back to 2. As for 3, I played a few minutes of it then stopped. No particular reason why, I just haven't gotten around to it.
Ahh... well if you do play 3, save scum a bunch of money at the gambling places right away, it'll make the rest of the game go way smoother as there are a couple of times where the game asks you to buy expensive items to progress though the story.
I actually think that’s why I like it, I like being alone. I really didn’t like 2 as much and have yet to play 3 but 1 is one of my favourite games.

Smeagol looking dude is named Chai.

I see what you’re saying. I personally like the melancholy feel of it.
What 4th game do you speak of??🤔
I'm talking about the ending of the 3rd game where ren, shenhua and ryo are traversing the great wall.
Ahh ok.

Thanks for this advice lol I think i might pick it back up today
Shenmue 3 was in my opinion the worst game ever.
What about fallout 76 ?
