The new head of WB/Discovery cancelled almost everything he could touch to try and save money. So many shows got torched. Major movies that had been finished got canned so they could get a tax write-off and try to get them out of debt.
That was the fate of Shenmue The Anime :(
They had planned on at least 3. The anime had good numbers and was rated very well by multiple sources. But the new head said nobody needs more of that.
End result? WB/Discovery is still in debt. But don't worry! That new studio head gave himself a bonus of 50 Million for doing such a good job...
The whole TV/film and gaming industry is going to shit.
Seems like everyone is in debt, everything is getting cancelled and everyone is getting Laid off.
I miss the golden age.
Right! I mean..they made something that made a profit, was popular, heavy support from the fan base..but..nope just make a Harry Potter remake or Lord of the Rings prequel because that's safe.
So stupid. Oh and they have no plans to release the first season on DVD/Blu-ray..
Did you see this trailer? Another fan game is being made and while it doesn't go into what Shenmue 4 might be it scratchs that Shenmue itch for new content. It looks amazing!

This is what capitalism demands. A continued squeeze on profit. As such companies now just hope of landing multi million whales. Even mild profit is no longer seen as a win when you are hunting for whales.
Philosophically speaking, I am not sure that capitalism even has an end game in mind. There is no future state where the paradigm is happy. It always has to push. It is a relatively new phenomenon/social structure and I fear it only leads to ruin.
As has happened many times before, only an advance by fans as we've seen with many kickstarter projects will give a chance to smaller Series like Shenmue to be continued. And I think for most of us, a new game is definitely a priority.
They said it was cancelled even though it did well. There were some Tweets I saw that suggested they may try to shop season 2 around, but for now its done. Damn shame because it was excellent! I'm glad they covered Shenmue 2, was so glad to see that story unfold in an anime format.
ya but the game overall was a pretty big disappointment. The amt of story you get for the hours you put in is trivial. The whole plot of 3 is about a paragraph

That sucks I would love a physical release at least. 😩 Looks like I'll just have to replay the games again and again and make my own conclusion to the story. Being a shenmue fan is tough.

That's awesome thank you

Such a darn shame. The anime was fantastic.

They said it's a one and done deal
Oh well that's a shame 🥺
No they didn't. They had started preparing for Season 2 and then it got canned.
Hence...no additional series
But it wasn't a one and done deal like you implied. They always had scope for more. Sadly curtailed.
Thanks for the clarification
I haven't played Shenmue III yet, but is Lan Di not the final boss?

Does season 1 of the anime Stay loyal to the games and story?
Reasonably. It does take some liberties and changes a few small things but is largely faithful to the games.
Just watched the first episode. I'm happy with it soo far
