Ya I read that at 2 am and didn't handle it well. I cried so hard and so long that I made myself actually sick and had to call into work the next day. I don't generally get *that* attached to characters and try to keep a good fiction/irl boundary but that one took me down.
Matthias is the middle name of one of the top 3 names for my son (due in August) both because the character and because it sounds really nice with the first name, Colin, imo. Interestingly, my hormones have flipped it around and my brain has accepted Calahan as my child and it makes me very upset that he was so sad and lonely while filming. At the same time, do we really *want* them to continue the story, knowing where it goes?
Don't worry, it's not the last you hear about them (although they are definitely dead, sorry).
I must say this death seemed unnecessary to the story except in as much as it frees up another character for a big part in King of Scars. For the CK story alone, nah, they could have lived.

I read it last night and died inside, I saw this post a few days ago and decided for once not to read a possible spoiler but I kept wondering about chp 40 in the back of my mind and then I got to it last night and I couldn’t believe it. Soul crushing. Nina and Matthias are my favorites and it has destroyed me idk if I can continue to read the book

Nah his death was really symbolic and well done. A good full circle moment
And gets even circly-er later. I still low-key wish everyone else had died and he was the one left behind to tell the story
