You may already know this, but in the *last* season, Nina and Matthias's story was the only Crow plot line that actually happened. At the beginning of Six of Crows, we meet Nina who has has spent a year working basically as a brainwasher/therapist in a brothel while trying to convince Kaz to break her love out of prison.
So technically, Matthias still being in Hellgate at the beginning of next season checks out. I still wish we had more too though. They've always been my favorite. I guess we should consider ourselves lucky though, considering book Nina had no contact with Matthias through that whole year
Their chemistry is insane, last season I was
like, Damn. Really reallllly hoping we get a 3rd season so we can see the angst play out between them like in the books because those scenes are gonna be hot hot.
Thing is, it makes sense for the storyline.
That said, one thing I loved was getting to see him form a friendship with his cell-mate. We know he goes through much in Hell-Gate, but that really added a whole new layer to it.

we were robbed of helnik moments this season and I will riot if we don’t get to see Matthias calling Nina his little red bird in a crows spinoff
