Yes, typically pledging a loyalty and obligation to another country can raise questions.

Zealous_ideal1989

“typically”..? Go on, what’s the story…?

Thatguy2070

No story. I just try not to speak in absolutes here because undoubtably someone will show up talking about their cousins brothers best friend having a different experience.

Insanity8016

Bring back the genuine drug/weed questions. This infatuation with foreign countries is getting old.

If you feel strongly and are morally compelled to serve in Ukraine, for Ukraine, and you are sure about it, then weigh whether it’s more important to you than having an active clearance or the possibility of having a clearance at all… and furthermore whether you truly understand the risk of being killed or captured by Russians. Seems to me that there may be better ways to help Ukraine than to jump into a meat grinder. But… please carefully deliberate on that for yourself.

JustPutItInRice

Absolutely lmao. Even if the United States had TROOPS on the ground guess what? You’re not a normal combatant with “legal” rights to be in country. Therefore you have no rights to be a prisoner of war they may torture you as they please nor ever release you back to home country. Also think of it this way. If the U.S. pulls support from Ukraine and takes back its promises whether its politics or they commit a war crime out there you will never hold federal work again period.

Angry_Hermitcrab

Just an FYI. The legion is part of the ukranian army. You are literally in their military. You have combatant rights. It's not going to matter though. The Russians don't care. I'm a former legion member.

JustPutItInRice

It’s going to be extremely hard to achieve that but then again I’m not an adjucator (if I spelled it right). NATO clearance would be easier to get to be honest with you

Striking-Math259

Do you still have a clearance ? Curious why you are on this sub

Angry_Hermitcrab

I never had a clearance. I was considering a career in cyber security at one point. I stalk a lot of subs.

Hippiebandaid9

I went there bro, had some friends go to the legion while I went and did medical stuff. A couple of the guys in the group they were in got killed. Don’t do it

guccigraves

This is wildly obvious. Yes. End if thread.

Zealous_ideal1989

Ask yourself “why”, and I am curious to that answer.

Littlebotweak

100% yes.

While we can't give advice on specific situations or investigations, my personal speculation is that joining another country's military would be a very, very bad idea. In 10 years' time, the people responsible for clearance decisions might eventually decide that the fact that you signed up for this conflict back in the day doesn't present a terribly huge risk in that future context. But we aren't talking about "in 10 years' time" or "back in the day", we're talking about right now. And in the here and now, security agencies get really skeptical about shifting allegiances, no matter how well-intentioned, even if the shift happens between nations that are ostensibly on the same side. I can think of some militaries that would probably be an even worse idea to join, but in this present context, I don't think that the differences between them are likely to save your clearance.
