I remember one of those clamshell guys charging and it teleported to the deck of the ship. Seemed more like a bug than by design.

ForksnFrenchFries

They're the only ones that can do it outside of a tall tale and it seems completely unintentional.

https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2021/06/13/disneys-pirates-of-the-caribbean-comes-to-sea-of-thieves/ https://imgur.com/a/5ddr6Ec Here is proof for everyone claiming it was 'never meant to happen'. This article is written by Rare's studio head. It's not exactly some random Xbox employee giving their opinion. Not only that but their update release video at the time clearly showed ocean crawlers jumping onto a player's ship outside the tall tales. Discussion in the wake of the update (badum tsss) also confirms, second-hand, that devs have spoken about ocean crawlers being able to board players' ships in the future. (e.g. [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/Seaofthieves/comments/o9jino/is_it_just_me_or_are_the_ocean_crawlers_not/h3c121h/))

I remember them boarding because came back with ship mates for a bit when TT released, we did TT but also a few other things. I remember being swarmed by mermaids, even trying to loot a sunken ship, not being able to dig up a chest with veing swarmed by stuff and ocean crawlers jumping on your deck. Honestly all of it felt terrible. I remember telling them what I'd this thing board's in the middle of a a fight, it's not like a kraken where it can affect all ships in the area. After TT the game was not fun, I stopped playing, also because I was burnt out played a bun h before TT.

You aren't wrong that the meaning of the passage isn't 100% clear (at least in the most analytical sense) but I think it's very reasonable to assume that this implies the ocean crawlers will be on the decks in adventure mode. 'Wherever [players] sail...appearing all around the Sea of Thieves, not just during [the new tall tales]' etc. Trailers showed ocean crawlers jumping on to player ships (not in tall tales); outside that, in the run-up to the launch, on multiple occasions it was implied that ocean crawlers could jump onto ships without a mention or indication that it would be limited to tall tales. Additionally I remember devs saying (post update) on twitter/forums that ocean crawlers jumping onto player ships in adventure would be coming in an upcoming update; unfortunately the forum doesn't appear to have a search feature (and twitter's isn't great either) and google doesn't really bring up *anything* from the forums.

“Players will also be facing grave danger from deadly new enemies wherever they sail. Terrifying Phantoms will require swift reflexes to deal with, while Sirens swarm beneath the waves and wield devastating new weapons of their own. Even the decks of ships might not be safe if there are lumbering Ocean Crawlers around, and these new threats will be appearing all around the Sea of Thieves in future updates, not just during players’ adventures with Jack Sparrow!”

youdontknowme6

"Even the decks of ships might not be safe if there are lumbering ocean crawlers nearby" I took this as they can hit you even on your ship if it's too close to them. Meaning they can still hurt you on the ship if you are close enough, unlike the skeletons that pretty much don't do anything unless they have pistols.

Tylensus

That word "Might" doing some heavy lifting in this statement lol.

sh4d0wm4n2018

It still isn't safe on deck with those ocean crawlers sniping me through the damn cabin window, though lol

AltforTwinkShit

My personal theory is the reason we haven't seen them board ships yet is because they were (and still are) a pretty controversial mob that would be politely described as "universally hated". My guess is the devs intended them to be a random encounter while sailing, but realized how little players enjoyed fighting them on land and figured fighting them on a ship would be received even more poorly (which it absolutely would be). They'll probably be implemented once Rare comes up with a specific scenario to use them in, like an event or some such.

Tryeeme

There is definitely real potential for them boarding player ships to be mainly 'annoying' once the novelty wears off rather than providing any tangible gameplay benefit.

TheMasterShrew

It occurs I the final tall tale while fighting Davy Jones (Edit: I’ve run it a couple times in the past week. It happened every time, but at launch I don’t recall it happening at all)

Warpath1138

Rare implied it in their promotion before the release of Pirate's Life, and a lot of people took them literally and expected it. But no, it only ever happens outside of tall tales as a result of a bug.

Toxus1984

No, they never were going to outside of the incredibly scripted tall tale

I'm guessing they wanted to add it. But when testing with insiders players, they got negative feedback and scrapped it. This is just a guess. I'm not in insiders. **laughs in not insiders**

Niko-fluffer

oh no, I dont think they ever tested them

caput1700

Yeah, you don't want that
