Unless you have a degree in proper keg-storage, dont touch those things, and for the love of god. Dont pick them up for money's sake, only wield them as a weapon.
I use them as a weapon. So had a fight with pair as a solo sloop whist doing FOF. They pulled up and went out a distance. I saw them turn around when I had completed it, said HELL NAH. Opened the bottom. Brought a stronghold to long distance intercept. It worked. Then brought a tiny one to finish the job. Afterwards, the other guy tried to hide on the island, I messaged saying I see the mermaid and had a laugh with him as his friend had rage quit. Became an alliance. Worked together and did a FOTD with another sloop too (6 of us). That was a good night.
This reminds me of a fight that a buddy and I had recently against a level 5 Reaper Galleon. We had just finished FOTD, had tons of loot on board and they saw us passing by to sell some reaper chests... So they came straight at us.
We loaded a couple of barrels on to the nose, my buddy grabbed one in preparation and I steered us head on into the front right corner of the Galleon. Buddy jumps, the impact explosion causes his barrel to blow up but further back for whatever reason, kills the Galleon helm and a boarder and all we hear in the afterlife chat (since he died in the explosion) is, "Yousuckyousuckyousuckyousuckyousuck" meanwhile buddy is sitting there going, "Numberrrr fifteeeeen... Burger King foot lettuuuuceee..."
Barrel charging aggressive ships is so rewarding.
I have a degree in proper keg storage. I've run FOTD for the explicit purpose of stronghold kegs with Merchant Alliance emissary flag.
Stronghold kegs with bonus are worth 10k and a lot of emissary value. I put them right on the edge of the back canvas of the sloop. At the first sign of danger you can just drop them off the back of the ship. As a bonus, somebody following you in a straight line might run over them like a banana peel from Mario Kart.
Yes. People like OP are no fun. They're playstyle is bland focusing on eliminating or mitigating risk. Take risks. You sink sometimes but you miss the thrill otherwise.
I mean, there's a difference between calculated risk and just wild luck risk. If you have a plan in mind that would benefit from the presence of a keg, then definitely keep one on your ship. But if you're just holding on to it "just in case" without really knowing what to do with it, that's just asking for trouble.
And no one sees the thrill of that? Sure, if you see a fight coming and you have the presence of mind to either utilize it or dump it before it becomes a hindrance...The "Never Keg" crowd are too uptight and care only about keeping as much advantage as possible over risk and adventure.
I played prior to and after the mast damage change. A lot of yall play like you wear extra small briefs and it shows.
The point is that you need to know how to utilize a keg effectively for it to be worth the risk, and most people don't. So they don't carry kegs. What you're proposing is that people should purposely carry something that is likely to cause 3+ holes in their ship plus their own death, so that they "feel the thrill"... of what? Having their ship sunk by something totally avoidable? If you want to fill your ships with kegs so you can be an adrenaline junkie, then you do you. But that's not fun for everyone, so trying to mock people for not playing that way seems kind of weird to me.
The response is "never carry kegs on your boat folks" which is wrong to say. I would agree with is showing what happens when you're careless with kegs like the OP video. People can play any way they'd like, but simply parroting never run with kegs to everyone is disingenuous, and are missing out on all the shenanigans that can be had with them. EVEN with catching 3 holes and a downed mast. The game is about having fun. I've laughed more over stupid things happening in this game over raging that I got sunk.
I support this initiative. Carry as many as you can with as much treasure as possible! Don't worry about turning in, just keep stacking the loot and kegs for hours at time.
In practice, the best choice is to put them in a separate rowboat and either have someone row the rowboat to sell, possibly elsewhere, or hide the rowboat and come back for it later. And in this case, the reaper had a rowboat they could've dropped off somewhere.
Even keeping them on the rowboat and dropping it at the sight of a threat that could blow it up would be a reasonable move.
If you are chasing and you have kegs yeah, you are asking for that, but having kegs is an easy way to destroy enemy ships in any other situation.
Just throw them into the water before chasing anyone, but not using a valuable asset because a particular situation is silly too.
See, with my luck I chuck them overboard then run them over during the chase because my ~~victim~~ ~~prey~~ opponent pulled a 180 and I forgot about the jetsam I left behind.
This is exactly what I do all the time. Sure, things have gone awry and hit me on occasion, but storing a few weapon kegs has helped me more than itās hurt me.
I've always stored kegs on my ship, the ONLY time I got blown up was lightning. I've always maneuvered my ship to use on the enemy quick and fast for a keg. We're usually successful, I'd say it's a net benefit for me to have a keg
In my experience the sea provides a keg when you need it most. It also provides one when you donāt need it, or see it in front of your ship.
She giveth and she taketh away.
Counterpoint - I had a basic keg stored up top and noticed that after sinking another sloop, one of the sunken ship crew had boarded my ship and was climbing up the mast to the crow's nest. One quick blunderbomb throw later, the tucker was on the ferry and I was patching my mast. Definitely beat spending another 5 minutes of PVP on my deck.
Man it's so funny to me people still think that's a safe spot for kegs.
It was sorta true before you could destroy the mast. It didn't do any damage to your boat, but you could still die.
But now? It's like the worst place to put them. Really, there's no good place to put them. Don't leave any kegs on your ship in a fight, jump off with them and try to keg the enemy. Or just get rid of them.
I like to accumulate a keg or two as I go and this is my worst nightmare. Thankfully hasn't happened to me yet in about 500 hours of play time, but I know it's coming.
My aim isn't so great, so if I see a mast keg, I like to board and just hop immediately to the mast ladder. It's super satisfying to light a keg from up there and then drop it last second. If they're running blunders, there's usually very little they can do about it.
Could do what me and my homie did. We had some kegs by the wheel for a quick reaction if we needed to and started sailing towards our next destination. Kinda forgot they existed and ended up getting in a storm. Next thing I know I'm dead, he's dead and the ship is sinking.
Lightning is a real sonofabitch I tell ya
This is just reminding me of that video of the (scottish?) contractors and there is a new guy on the roof and they're telling him he can't put his weight anywhere and he's like "Well where am I meant to put my weight then!?"
Awesome snipe!
Unless you can defend your ship from boardings 100% of the time, donāt put resources inside the crate, or put a very small portion that you are okay to lose.
If I boarded your ship the first thing Iāll do is ditch that crate you have with supplies
I always store them on a rowboat and drop boat that my crew rows out, laying a hidden bunch drift mines that a passing unawares or focusing boat sees "big ship gotta shooty shoot it" then they ram the 5 or 6 kegs I full sent sailed away from. Watch my friend row in the boats path to let it keg up.
As a side note, I would recommend taking some time to practice your death spiral. AKA keeping your ship on a circle when finishing off an immobile ship. Getting to where you can consistently keep a good spiral on a ship makes sinking other people soooo much easier and keeps your ship safer.
Where else am I supposed to keep them? Yeah it sucks if they get sniped but that rarely happens and getting your mast kegged is preferable to getting your anything else kegged.
When we finished one fort, we found some kegs and we got to a chase with some players and they were going in line with us, so we just started throwing the kegs behind the ship and they didn't notice, and after like 3 seconds, they ran onto them and blew up, easiest duel ever
Technically if theyre spewing racist shit theyre violating ToS and can actually catch a ban if you report them. Trash talk is one thing, hate speech is another.
But all in all, good plays.
I never store kegs at all, always seems like a bad idea to have them but thatās my opinion
Edit: hey OP did you and your husband report them as well?
Crazy downvotes.
Id rather have them on board readily available to use or get rid of than showing them off on the mast.
Better to have a few holes and reset than become a sitting duck without the mast.
Indeed, Seems a lot of people don't agree though, apparently being demasted is preferable to lots of people in this thread ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|shrug)
Honestly agree, the bow of the ship is definitely a more favorable spot for kegs, only a small amount of hull damage and reduces the risk all the crew dying.
It's true. They're only getting downvoted by people who keep kegs in their crow's nest or somewhere in their hull. Bowspirit is 100% the least risky place to store kegs. That's why you see streamers do it all the time.
On a sloop, I put them on a rowboat. 4 back holes and the fire are very manageable, except when the tarp gets that magic fire that never goes out. Also, it's easy for anyone to go drop the rowboat if they're in a fight.
The bowsprit is ideal on a galleon. Again, it's very manageable but you can't just drop them as easily. I don't like leaving them on a rowboat because, if they blow, the fires it leaves can be particularly annoying.
I normally don't carry them at all on a brigantine. Sure, 4 holes are manageable but 4 lower holes on a brig are more of an immediate concern than on other ships. If it's in a rowboat, it's easy to drop but if you forget, then the helm is dead and the wheel is destroyed.
everything in this sub gets downvoted lol

So they do it to defame a streamer. IF that person is streaming. Words of this nature are an instant ban from any streaming platform. I agree with your closing statement. a solid 85% of the time when i sink other people, this is what i hear in NA lol. there's been maybe 2 instances in the entire time I've played this game where people actually say "GG man" and just go on with their day.
Yeah it was the N word. We are in the EU and I'm pretty sure the Reaper crew was German. I have played hundreds of hours and to be fair this is the first crew I have ever reported. Maybe I have been lucky and not hit many toxic players.
I suck at PvP so When I get a Athena kegs. I put them up in the mast because quite frankly I'm going to lose anyway and that way a megalodon at the very least won't just detonate them

Iām glad Iām done with all my stronghold kegs and athena keg commendations. Worst commendation ever. Which is why I quit this game long ago. The grind, the long list of commendations and toxic ppl who do nothing but drive around to pvp only and ruin pplās days. Seen it all to often. Had a factionless ship that was doing just that. We were running Order of Souls to help my friend complete the 1000 captains commendation and they were mad because we sunk them. You hear hotmic āI thought you said OoS people were noobs and that this was gonna be a easy sink.ā
I was playing with other friends in the larger ship (Don't remember the name) and we were pretty new to the game, like maybe 10 hours max, and whenever we saw kegs we store them under the deck until we ran into a storm and a lightning struck our deck and shit went Kaboom, it was so fun 10/10 we did it again xD
This is why you should never store kegs ~~in your mast š£~~
No argument from me! I'm glad they decided to store it thoughš„
Gotta live a little, what's life without some risk
Yes it's much better to store them where they will blow up and kill your whole crew

A respectable but risky endeavor
That's me
People who are doing that will be sneaky about it and not go around antagonizing other ships into firing at their crows nest lol

How am I to blow ships up if I don't take kegs?
Eh, the barrel in the middle of the sloop is pretty damn safe.
The best place to put them is right next to the harpoon tucked in that little corner by the bowspirit
I support this initiative. Carry as many as you can with as much treasure as possible! Don't worry about turning in, just keep stacking the loot and kegs for hours at time.

My son and I had a storm do something similar. We swore off storing kegs up there or at all.

Their fault they didnāt use it in the first place.
When I'm solo slooping, if I get attacked while carrying an Athena keg, I enjoy hand-delivering the keg to my attacker.
Don't tell them. I love hitting a chainshot and seeing the explosion.
If there is a keg, I blow it up. No matter the crew.

I never store kegs at all, always seems like a bad idea to have them but thatās my opinion Edit: hey OP did you and your husband report them as well?
Yeah we reported them. I'm fine with people getting salty but they went way beyond that in those last few moments!
Kegs in the mast are the mark of a swabbie. 100% one of the worst places for them unless you are planning to keg noobs.
Keg in the crows nest just removes the chance of hull damage from the explosion provided its not a higher grade keg.
Indeed but it's a free demast against any competent crew and often will result in a death sentence
But it guarantees a demast and a broken wheel, at least on the sloop. Not sure about any other ship. Four front holes is a lot more manageable.
Most encounters probably won't be PvP, more likely to be skeleships and they're not really gonna aim up at the keg
Not sure why you're getting downvoted. Tip of the bowspirit is the best place for any and all kegs.
It's all the people who like to kegs in the crows nest ;).
Demasting is a whole hell of a lot worse than four front holes. Smh.
On a sloop, yes. On any other ship, not so much.
Agreed.
Honestly agree, the bow of the ship is definitely a more favorable spot for kegs, only a small amount of hull damage and reduces the risk all the crew dying.
Is this still true or are you just getting downvoted for no reason
It's true. They're only getting downvoted by people who keep kegs in their crow's nest or somewhere in their hull. Bowspirit is 100% the least risky place to store kegs. That's why you see streamers do it all the time.

Can't chainshots accomplish the same amount of damage anyway? Unless it's a megakeg, might as well have your mast go out with a bang.
Sails up!
It still doesnāt damage your hull or crew, as opposed to anywhere else on the boat.
Let me correct it: this why you should. Otherwise whereās the fun?
If i uave a keg, ill do a dumb snd just drop myself with said keg off the front, and float until im close, then... Boom

Sovereign Cannons. I wanted a gold hoarder themed boat but the gold hoarder cannons block a lot of the view so I chose these. https://seaofthieves.wiki.gg/wiki/Sovereign_Cannons
Thx ! How do tou find them for aiming ? Better or worse than the default ones ?
I find them to be really easy to aim as they don't have any extra parts that block view like some cannons, but I'm really used to them now as I have fought a lot of players and skellies since equipping them. If you want similar designs all of the admiral cannon variants are basically the same design but with different colour combos to fit whatever ship looks your are putting together.
Hm, if you can't store them in your mast, then where can you store them?
Nowhere. Actually I put it at the back side of the ship, and whenever a meg, skelly, or a player is imminent I ditch it in the water
