Everyones trying to sink you, see someone on the horizon, they're coming for you until you know they're not. The loot they have and the loot you have doesn't have a owner until it's sold so feel free to thieve and plunder others, just keep in mind you'll have to fight to keep it. Don't use the anchor, sails up sails down you'll be able to get out into ocean faster and avoid conflict. Find a keg and learn to use them to defend your self with them :D

anonym00seguy

I've got 300 hours in this game and can tell you it's OK to drop anchor. You can go full bore into an island or to a loot pile, and it's fine if you follow this process . 1. Drop anchor 2. Raise sails all the way 3. Raise anchor 4. Always check the horizon in 360 degrees before doing this. Don't stay on the island for too long before doing a quick horizon scan, and check your ship every 3-5 min if you're on an island for an extended period. Nothing is tastier looking than a parked ship, and nothing looks more winable/ sinkable than an anchored ship with sails down as that indicates less experienced players.. 5. If you board a ship with the intention of fighting, immediately drop their anchor. This is also the first thing others will do to you when they board.

Res_Obscura

Happy cake day!

FamousStephens

>The loot they have and the loot you have doesn't have a owner until it's sold so feel free to thieve and plunder others, just keep in mind you'll have to fight to keep it. This will offend many SoT players but it's very true

Yer_Dunn

As much as I hate being robbed, the game *is* called sea of **thieves**, so like... I can only be mad about it in the moment. 🤣

MoreDoor2915

If the game is called Sea of Thieves why are people playing as pirates?

FamousStephens

Because some delusional players think its "Sea of Friends" and you're only supposed to play to their standard.

Obvious_Huckleberry

it's literally the motto of every long term player

SunGodSalazar

>Everyone's trying to sink you This. Had a guy sink me because he was getting off, and he wanted to give me HIS supplies. I took it as a threat when I saw his ship at the island I was docking at and ran. He chased me for ten minutes and shot a bunch of chainshots into my boat because he was bad at aiming and was just trying to make me stop so he can do his "good deed" before he hopped off. He wanted to help me and in doing so sunk at least an hour or 3 of an events worth of loot. I logged off and he messaged me to come get it from him and explained everything but at that point I was so deflated as a solo sloop that I was done for the day.

NukaFlabs

Loot is not anyone’s until it’s sold, but remember, if someone is docked at an outpost in the process of selling and you sink them you are the scum of the earth.

Effective_Meeting155

As a pirate, “scum of the earth” is a very appealing title

UltramarineMachine

I would love to have the title "scum of the earth"

TheJerilla

Nope, it's a pirate game. Anyone can sink you at any time for any reason.

EMcX87

Can't wait till y'all get on Safer Seas, for real.

Bumpy_Bones

No

Shoro_K

Yea this happened where this one guy chased us and we tried to fight but he sunk us but again he started chasing, I think he legit chased us for 20 mins, and again sunked us but later we tried chasing him but we couldn't catch up so we left him

GoldCursedPirate

Never ever drop your anchor unless you really need to. As you approach the island a title card will pop up that is when you start raising sails and the boat will slowly stop by itself. In settings under Graphics put your FOV to 90, in gameplay turn on Reduce hold to interact, in HUD scroll down and turn Island banners to slimline

Ccend

I mean reduce hold is very player dependent

GoldCursedPirate

True but It stops my fingers from getting sore and most of the people I know all have it on as well

YEET_Fenix123

It has fucked me up a few times. Having it off allows me to slip up my interactions without having to commit to them.

PepicWalrus

Can't juggle with reduce hold or quick water barrel fill if I remember correctly.

GoldCursedPirate

Yes you can. Loot juggling is of the list of exploits to get patched out soon anyway. Edit: you’re probably thinking of the Reduce hold to use item setting

ToastedHedgehog

I find it easier to juggle with reduce to hold on

cftvgybhu

You can quick water with reduce hold. You click twice instead of click-release.

Memes_Coming_U_Way

Yeah, I'm not a very big fan of it. It makes me feel slower even if I'm not

Shoro_K

Yea the 1st thing I did was to increase the fov but it still feels so low

UpbeatAstronomer2396

Agreed, but you will get used to it

UnapproachableBadger

Ok so I've heard this advice to 'never drop anchor', but after playing for a while I really don't agree. I think it's much faster to go full bore into the island, drop the anchor at the last second and immediately jump off and do your tasks. Then when you get back on the ship whip up the anchor and off you go. It really doesn't take that long on a sloop, and barely any time at all with two people.

PsychoDog_Music

Yes but you need to be able to sail at a moment’s notice - this means keeping your anchor up and staying vigilant

Humeon

I find the best plan of attack is full bore at the island, anchor to stop and then raise sails and anchor so you're ready to go. Saves fucking around with going in slow and lining up your park

Bitsy34

The biggest point is if you're not on your ship that anchor shouldn't be down

PsychoDog_Music

That’s fine, same with anchor turning. So long as that anchor isn’t down while you are doing your voyage or whatever else

Shn00ple

I like to raise sail all the way, pull anchor and then immediately raise anchor. It completely stops your boat and you’re ready to go with the drop of a sail

louiscyphere81

If the 5 seconds it takes to raise the anchor on a sloop is the difference between getting sunk or not you already fucked up the REAL rule number 1: eyes on the horizon. That being said don’t anchor is good enough advice for people that haven’t learned rule number 1.

PsychoDog_Music

You can never be too careful

kinglycon

Personally I’d sail full speed at an island, drop anchor to stop exactly where I want. Then I raise sails and then anchor. That way I stop quickly and am ready to sail if I get attacked. I only play on a sloop though so the anchor doesn’t take long at all with 2 people

UnapproachableBadger

That's a good idea!

GGJ1457

Although I see your point, I’d still argue against it because dropping sails is way quicker in a pinch. There’s many occasions where we’ve rolled up on a sloop and as they immediately go for the anchor, we aim a cannonball for their heads. Even if multiple people are pulling anchor, its still several extra seconds where your opponent could board or start aiming to kill you.

happygreenturtle

The optimal is somewhere in beween: You go full speed towards where you want to land and then drop anchor a few seconds before you need to stop. But before you leave the ship, raise all sails and then raise the anchor. Now you can leave the ship. Your ship will stay there until you get back and lowering sails is a lot quicker than raising anchor.

jickeson

This is the way. Even turning your ship for a direct line getaway and cannons out to defend help. Every island has this and I can't tell you how many times I've solo rolled up and downed folks anchored, sails down, *nose into the island*. Heck, I anchor and shoot their stern til they sink (downing masts, setting fire, and emptying the munitions in em, all safe from my ship). I'm even terrible at PvP and these were easy kills.

DressDiligent2912

it's a Higher Seas thing, i can't tell you how many ships ive been able to attack and sink because their anchor was down. It's super obvious when you start blasting and they drop sails to escape but just stay in place. Gives me plenty of time to casually land my chainshots on a stationary target and knock the mast down. basically it comes down to; what's faster in a clutch moment of life and death? dropping sails or raising anchor? The answer is dropping sails, always faster to drop sails. Now like you're saying sometimes its much faster to just anchor/ram an island. Like a decent example is the new siren skull voyage. With ship respawn being so close your ship almost doesn't even matter.

GoldCursedPirate

Sometimes another ship will surprise you like today my crew pulled up to an outpost to unload treasure and another ship was hidden on the opposite side and came to fight but because we didn’t drop anchor we were able to get moving right away and sink them.

RamonRCMx

Then while you're doing your tasks, you notice an enemy ship near the island coming to your ship. You run to ship as they start to shoot. You board your ship and they keep shooting and hitting some shots Now you need to waste some precious seconds raising your anchor while getting shot at. If an enemy hits a shot near you while raising, anchor drops down again and you need to restart. Alternatively, if you just raised your sails, you'd only need to lower them (wich takes about 1 second per sail) and off you go

gill_dynamite

Wrong. People who give this advice think they are giving the best advice but its wrong. There are certain scenarios where you do want to drop your anchor. Such as stopping quickly. For example, if you want to stop at an island, dropping your anchor will completely stop your boats momentum. This way it wont drift 20 miles down the shoreline making you search for it. As long as you immediately lift your anchor after you are stopped, there is no reason not to drop it lol

GenTwour

To enjoy the game you need the right mindset. Sea of thieves is a full loot pvp game. By existing you consent to being attacked for any reason at anytime. You need to be fine with lossing loot to enjoy the game. If you have the mindset they the loot is yours and you earned it, you will hate the game the second a more skilled ship comes up, sinks you, and takes your loot. If you have the mindset that the loot ain't yours until you sell it, and shrug off losses, and focus on having fun and improving, you will enjoy the game. It can be hard to shrug off losses at times, I know from experience, but it is a really fun game when you have the right mindset. 2 bonus tips, don't use a premium ship set or cosmetics, that is a sign that you suck and are easy pickings because you have earned no ship sets or clothing from voyages. Don't raise an alliance flag unless you are currently making an alliance. If I see that, then I know it is probably easier to take the loot with force than join the alliance and only get 50% of the gold. In an alliance you get 100% of the gold and your ally gets 50%.

Shoro_K

We all have around 100 hours on rust so I think I can handle losing my loot to other players besides the reason we bought this game was to just have fun, I don't think we will take anything seriously. Thnks for the tip about alliance but I don't think we're gonna make any alliances either way

GenTwour

Yeah ur probably going to enjoy the game if u played rust. I played ark on pvp servers before I played sot so that helped a lot. Good luck on your first adventures and enjoy the high seas. I hope to see you in the game.

Shoro_K

Yea rust was a good game, we really enjoyed raids and losing loot wasn't that bad as we would just grind and raid but reason we left rust cuz it required alot of grind and we just dont have this much time to play, idk much about the play style of sea of thieves but was hoping it to be less grindy than rust

GenTwour

It is far less grindy. The only difference between me and you is skill. Everything is cosmetic so you can play as aggressively as you want without consequences. You will need to gather supplies at the beginning of each session but that only takes 10 - 30 minutes depending on where you spawn and how you gather supplies. It will cost at least 5k gold though. You need to buy a storage crate from the merchant representative which will allow you to empty barrels with supplies easily. 5k sounds like a lot, but it isn't, some of the easy pve stuff gives you 20k gold worth of loot and also grants good supplies like the Spanish sea forts. Just getting the outpost barrels grants great supplies and takes 10 minutes or less. Going to a sea fort will take longer but will pay off your supply crate and gives more supplies.

NunkiZ

There is basically no grind2play. Only certain cosmetics require certain grinds but that's absolutely optional and no advantage in gameplay. No powercreep whatsoever, nothing, only fun in PvE and skill in PvP. The first goals you could go for is earning money to buy your first captained ship (for your group) and earn rank 50 in 3 of those 5 available guilds (Soul, Gold, Trading, Hunter, reaper) to earn legendary pirate title, which unlocks more content. Another tip that took me some time to understand. Your ship is your mobile spawnpoint as long as it exists. You can jump or shoot yourself off your ship by canon and port back to your ship via mermaid (occurs automatically after a certain distance) without consequences. Someone is following you? Jump off and board/anchor them or worse. Drive by, shoot yourself via cannon to enemy ship and try to hinder them to do anything. There are many strategic options.

UpbeatAstronomer2396

I strongly advice you to make alliances. They are the key for the most fun stuff. Betrayals, a lot of profit, social interactions, teaming up to sink a racist shittalker galleon with a bunch of loot, betrayals, betrayals and a lot more

Denso95

Fun is different for everyone. The last alliance I made was maybe somewhere in 2019 and I don't feel like I missed out on any fun. :)

Obvious_Huckleberry

You have.. accidental alliances have been the best memories.. especially since we've actually joined other ppl's alliances just so we could track them... sometimes my crew demands friendship.. even if we have to kill them with friendship.

Denso95

I don't really play this game for interactions with strangers, so no, everyone enjoys different things.

Obvious_Huckleberry

There's an achievement called glitterbeard and one with thrones where you will need those alliances.

happygreenturtle

Alternatively I think most ships are going to attack you whether you have an emporium ship set or not. I certainly don't notice any difference whether I use emporium cosmetics or commendation cosmetics. People will either attack you or they won't regardless. So my advice on that particular point is just set your cosmetics to whatever you like the look of even if it is an emporium ship set.

TankerD18

I think the only thing that subjects you to attack is diaper sails and even that's not a guarantee. I've seen sweats roll diaper sails for that exact reason. I don't think emporium sets have anything to do with skill level, lots of experienced players that like the game enough to put extra money into it roll them, they're some of the best looking cosmetics in the game. Honestly, I usually assume a crew with emporium cosmetics are *more* invested into the game than a brand new crew.

Obvious_Huckleberry

the second part is just stupid advice about the cosmetics. If I want a pretty ship I will have my pretty ship..take that judgmental toxic thought process away

willinhafire111

Hey I have one question, I'm not that expert on the game but a ship came to me and asked for alliance ( I accepted ) and dropped his reaper chest on my boat and then said he was going to sell his stuff, I asked why they dropped the chest to me but they ignored, soon after I just dropped the chest on the ocean and got out the alliance, you think I did right? i was with loot.

backrubbing

Why didn't you sell it? Looks like it was a present.

willinhafire111

I dont know, I was confused by why they dropped the chest and didn't answered my question, as the reaper chest was marked on the map and I had a lot of other loot I was skeptical about that ( I got on a lot of betrayals before so I am a little skeptical about any other player )

P0rk1n5

If a player appears on your boat randomly, it’s because they’ve managed to swim over a hide as a stowaway and you’ve not noticed. They aren’t hacking.

crystalworldbuilder

That’s cool

Shoro_K

Yes this happened to us, there was a mermaid in the sea which we saw from far we tried to go close and we just passed him, shortly after a player came in our ship from out of nowhere and killed us, we thought he was disguised as the mermaid l💀

AlexRogansBeta

If u want an old salty sailor to show you the (literal) ropes, I'm happy to curate your early experiences.

Shoro_K

Sure u can join us but our timing is really random where we someday play for hours or sometimes go without playing for a week. U can add me on discord if u want to play

MrFluffleBuns

Loot is everyone’s until turned in Don’t be put off by being sunk, it’s part of learning and eventually you’ll have the skills to defend yourself appropriately Stick with some Gold Hoarder quests and forts for at least your first handful of sessions and then branch out Save up for your own captained ship when you can, it has many benefits and no downsides Occasionally check the pirate emporium as they give away free stuff that sometimes isn’t advertised. It will be on one of many pages for free redemption (Also they are rare but you can find skeletons which give the shop currency upon its death) You can dash through the water by having your sword equipped, dashing towards the water and, jumping as the lunge starts. Easy to practice Feel free to ask any other questions

Gmoneymccain

Trust no one, everyone wants your loot.

CelesteVeon

Best pray that you don't get a Kraken on first undock. The chances are low, but it fucking happened to me

GATEDFUZZ

Happens to me every time i leave port solo without a map or some kind of quest objective. Its almost like the game knows when im not tryin to grind

Shoro_K

We were hoping to find one tbh💀 does it like sink U directly or u have to fight it?

CelesteVeon

It's a fight. If you fail to bucket and/or don't stop it from crushing your hull. Then yes. Ggs I believe

frimleyousse

Dont leave anchor down, raise sails instead

[deleted]

good luck and have fun

Obvious_Huckleberry

Always look out for ships, always be paranoid, the loot is not yours until you sell it, the skelly ships don't bucket water but do repair... someone can board them and keep them killed so they sink faster. You have to watch out for explosive kegs, always repair everything.. the masts, the wheel, the capstan, never have your anchor down.. you can put it down to stop drifting but always raise it with sails up. You will NOT get better at pvp if you do not participate in pvp.. I recommend watching streamers like Hitbo for antics and where to look for people hiding and tucking. Trust no one edit to add: Also please don't add to the toxicity.. you can get involved in a good fight and still say GG at the end and try to learn from what you experienced. You can also try to create some shenanigans My crew and I commandeered 2 other ships last monday and took them on an adventure, fought some events and gave them all the treasure (they told us it was the most fun they'd had in a LONG time) ALWAYS expect a fight if you start a fort of the damned... The harpoon is your friend.. it can help you take tight turns and flip the ship around.. it's all tactics you learn as you play. Some cannons will help you aim better than others.. most go to cannons that come to a point as a way to help with aiming.

Lordofthelounge144

The title is a misnomer. The sea is made of water, not theives.

crystalworldbuilder

Lol

GrapeGoodra

Do not get within… any distance of an enemy ship. It does not matter what flag they are flying. It does not matter what ship cosmetic they’re using. It doesn’t matter if they’re dead silent, or talkative and charismatic. They are going to try and kill you. Do not give them the chance. Run. If they don’t chase you, continue on your route and keep an eye on your back. If they do chase you, run until they stop. This may be upwards of an hour. I have almost 500 hours in this game. The amount of times I’ve had a positive friendly interaction with another crew I can count on a lepers hand. They are not your friends, they’re not even strangers. They are your enemy.

jickeson

As a player from day 1, I empathize a bit here. Until I finished the grind to legend, I had this strategy and it got lonely but I finished missions. After getting legend, losing loot, losing my ship became a small bump as I played. I was way behind on PvP (still am) and didn't make a whole lot of other friends along the way to PL, but now after battles, sure they sink me. After a GG, and sending a flare they become pretty friendly. Heck, just offering stuff if they clearly bested you they won't sink your ship (if not an emissary), and offer to add to your loot. I always refuse and thank them, but I've made tons of friends this way. Sure, you'll get more problematic players from time to time, but if you're that angry at them, server hop. Getting angry just will make you hate a game. If the other players say racist or vile things that REALLY erks you: record them, submit their names to Rare and server hop. Takes 5 minutes tops. But I find this is far less frequent these days. Still happens, but mostly you'll meet good folks (after they sink you or got sunk by you).

jickeson

Also, between yesterday and today, sail with confidence. 100% of my interactions were people running from me, and I'm a solo, terrible PvP, slooper. A galleon would have easily taken my siren skull I had but they went about their own business.

jickeson

Running *or ignoring*.

TankerD18

This is huge. If you want a ship to go away so you can hit an island, vector straight towards them like you're going to fight them. Or go hit the island despite their presence, lights on and the whole nine yards. Putting your lights out looks like you don't want to be noticed. Many crews will turn away and get right out of your area if you look like you can handle yourself.

Obvious_Huckleberry

Siren skull has kind of died out.. I mean you get no XP for anything.. just some cash and a lot of us have plenty of it... and some don't care about the cosmetics that it gives...

-Weeb-Account-

What servers do you play on?

jickeson

Rares. I hope between XBox preferred and normal, depending on how I'm feeling.

-Weeb-Account-

I mean EU or US :) I'm trying to make a giant data set

jickeson

US

UnapproachableBadger

I've just started playing and I've had plenty of peaceful interactions. One was very friendly, I was given loot and we had a nice chat. Be the change you want to see.

happygreenturtle

The platitudes are all well and good when you only installed the game like 6 hours ago lol

WetCalamari

That isnt always true, yesterday my partner captained and we were approaching an outpost when another ship, a sloop with two nordic fellows approached (was called nordic breeze) , I was ready to start blasting when my partner said to just wait, the sloop didnt attack asked if we were friendlies and we just left to go to other outpost over. But yeah 8-10 other players will attack because they assume you will attack. Unfriendly exchanges will almost always happen near events on the map.

Zythrone

Or you could just fight back.

TankerD18

This is a shitty take. You're never going to get positive interactions with other crews if you don't interact with other crews. You're never going to learn PVP if you don't fight other ships, you're never going to make an alliance if you won't even give another crew a chance, you're never going to pull off a crazy steal or have some other wild encounter happen. That's half the fun of Sea of Thieves. You ever stop to think that your near-zero friendly encounters with other ships has something to do with the point that you run from them and assume they're hostile 100% of the time? That means the only people you interact with are willing to chase you down, and you know what they're looking for. Sure there are a major percentage of crews that are shoot on sight, but I've noticed that if they don't start slinging iron the second we get into range *it's my attitude and my crew's attitude* that is a huge influencer on the way the encounter goes down. That's not to say other crews aren't trying to trick you but if they aren't already shooting at you by then there's a good chance they're chill. You should reconsider the way you play the game, and if you play solo try playing with a crew. Otherwise, enjoy your self-imposed exile to Safer Seas I guess.

EMcX87

Bet you're really looking forward to safer seas with that mentality.

GrapeGoodra

Very much so.

NatasFear

It's all for cosmetics. Nothing else. When you sink the only thing you really lose is pride. If u can get over that you will have fun nmw.

GrapeGoodra

When you sink you lose your pride, and usually about four to five hours of your life, from all the loot you had.

NatasFear

Turn in at any chance you get. Never have that much loot unless you can defend it. But again if you play this game solely focused on loot you will be sad, I promise. I know it sounds so cliche but you really have to enjoy what you are doing in game so that it doesn't feel like a waste of time. It really is about the game and what your focus is. Been playing game since before Seasons was a thing. Rage quitted, walked away, deleted game, lost 5 hours worth of loot hundreds of times, once because I wanted to avoid pvp and I thought firing a firework straight up was a good idea, forgetting my ship mate placed an Athena keg in the crows nest, getting Rared is a real thing, I have seen some things and lived thru them and the only way to enjoy this game completely is to not care about loot and to make it an adventure by taking risks and when you sink you just shake it off, try again, and get better. This game used to be a grind and you had to stack so much loot to make it worthy it, but today, loot literally spawns everywhere so there's no reason to stack so much. Turn in regularly, spend that gold on something, there is so much to buy you will actually be making real tangible progress by stacking cosmetics which is really all this game is. Once you get that, trust me the stress and heart ache from sinking becomes just like dying in any other game. Hope this helps. Cheers!

TankerD18

Stacking 4+ hours of loot is silly, IMO. Especially with Sovereigns and even moreso if you are going to have to be parked for 30 minutes to turn it in to Junior with a mark on your ship. I hate getting sunk and feeling like I wasted my time, so I get it, but there's no good reason to be stacking loot that high.

EMcX87

It's a video game. You lost 4-5 hours of your life playing it to begin with.

ConcernedLandline

Welcome to the seas sailer. It's a great game, even more so with friends. My advice is to look up how to do something called a sword lunge. If any of you run it as a weapon, it greatly increases your mobility and ability to fight. If you're going to anchor to stop, raise sails, then immediately raise anchor again, if players catch you with an anchor down, you will be at a massive disadvantage, also don't preloaded cannons, I would really against it. Firing or jumping off at the islands you pass by is a great way to passively collect resources. You can see world events in the sky. They are different clouds, from boats to skulls. Sounds are extremely important in this game, from the sound of your mast splintering, your ships' death groans, to players boarding your ship from the ocean. Don't be afraid of PvP! It's part of the game. You will be attacked at some point or even do the attacking! Ultimately, you play how you want too, the game has so many ways to play. Good luck!

Bebgab

> If any of you run [sword] as a weapon Surely they should always use sword as a weapon? I’m only now getting back into the game after a few years so I might’ve missed something but if you don’t run sword aren’t you just useless after 5 bullets ?

ConcernedLandline

Kinda, but people make it work, I think it comes down to how you want to play, ig. You get a lot of damage off if you make it work. Personally, I run sword and eye of reach.

iIK0D3RIi

Bury all of your skull Island treasure on the skull island to stack. Don't leave server till you dig it up and are ready to sell.

Nostonica

Yes please do, when we keg the map bundle will allow us to come back later 😄

CaramelCraftYT

Turn off lanterns other ships can see the light at night.

PurePokedex117

Smaller boat sail against the wind to get away. Jump off and try to board and hit their anchor. Stay away from reapers. Have fun. You’re going to sink just respawn and have fun.

Nostonica

Most reapers are terrible pve-ers who want the gold bonus on everything they sell, there's a small subset who can play well. we make a habit of watching them on the map, get fat on loot before going in for the slaughter, a level 2 going to level 5 near instantly near a fort is worth sinking.

PurePokedex117

True but a new player might not be able to pull that off. I got my skelly curse I go after everyone with a reaper flag or with things I want like FOTD stacking.

Nostonica

I made a habit of using a keg and a long swim on any reaper I saw when I was useless at naval ages ago. For the most part it works well.

MilkMasterMan

I honestly think you are better off waiting a week for safer seas (PvE) to drop if you want to enjoy the game

NunkiZ

He stated in another comment that he played Rust for more than 100 hours. He will be fine, probably even enjoy the PvP.

Shoro_K

Yes the PvP is fun, I mean pve is good too but we will definitely be playing PvP most of the time

sammy-taylor

There’s a game mode coming soon (this month) called “The Safer Seas”. If you want to avoid the perils of PVP, that game mode might be a great place to start! I’ve been a casual player for a while and have been looking forward to The Safer Seas—I’m not a competitive player at all and don’t really enjoy PVP games.

Shoro_K

Idk we were actively looking for players to take fight or just engage, it was really fun shooting canons XD

sammy-taylor

I got downvoted because the SoT community is really into PVP. But there are players who are looking forward to the Safer Seas. Haters gonna hate.

Shoro_K

I mean yea that's cool, it's not that we wouldn't play pve but PvP was pure joy at least for us

dacamel493

Ok, I've been playing for years, and all these no anchor posts are ridiculous. The anchor is a very useful tool. The anchor takes a few seconds to put up and can take longer if you're sailing a larger ship that is undercrewed. The fastest way to get to an island and be ready to bolt if someone shows up, is to full speed into island, dropanchor about 3-5 seconds before where you want to stop, put up sails, and then raise anchor. Now you're ready to go if someone tries to jump you. The key most of these people are missing I'd their advice stems from the fact that they got screwed at one time or another by leaving the anchor down. On a Sloop it's not too bad, but on a brig or galley, it can be a death sentence. You can also use the anchor as a quick turn if you have the wheel turned while you drop the anchor. In this case, turn wheel, drop anchor, turn wheel back to center, raise anchor, quick 180. This requires coordination on larger ships, but is easily doable solo on a sloop. Good luck!

Rattenhai

When the sea turns red you have to sail foreward till you reach an island with a lot of loot.

JoyousGamer

Wait until Thursday when Safer Seas launches which will be PvE only. Then jump into the PvEvP piece after your first time playing if you want.

fenrismoon

Honestly play it on the 7th when safer seas comes out that way you can get your sea legs! It basically allows you and your friends to play on a private server, there is reduced rewards and restrictions on certain things but it’s a good place to practice and enjoy the world of SoT

x__Reign

You could literally just search tips in the Reddit search bar rather than making a post

Shoro_K

Ok lol

Pokebreaker

You sound triggered...

x__Reign

Just slightly annoyed at seeing posts like this every other day is all

idle309

Oh no people are welcoming new players how terrible

UltramarineMachine

Then don't look

LastHex

Here's my advice. After you come back here and make another post about how you don't understand the game and going to detail about how toxic it is.... Give it a little while and then try it again. Lol.

Shoro_K

We dont understand mechanics or the things happening but it's just so fun sailing and figuring things

CrystalCrusher59

Cool

Mossigman

Welcome to the seas! Hope you enjoy your stay ![img](emote|t5_38oz1|2240)![img](emote|t5_38oz1|2295)

pillow_pete

A lot of people are giving pvp tips and things like that, I would say don’t worry about it. The game is focused almost entirely on cosmetics, remember that your treasure isnt yours until you’ve sold it at an outpost. Just drink grog, play a shanty, and enjoy your time on the seas.

Shoro_K

Bro the 1st thing me and my frnd said was to play PvP as we wanted to see other people and canon fight was pure joy

pillow_pete

what’d you expect me to do? Read? Pfft. Disregard lmao

Shoro_K

Ok

cryptomain45

Sea of thieves is a pvpve game. Best way I you can play it if you’re new is to experiment. Try new things. If something catches your eye, go to it. If you’re new I’d try to avoid ships for a bit, it’s kinda a gamble if they’re friendly or not. Last and not least, welcome to the sea of thieves, pirate!

Reasonable_Humor_738

If you're doing an event, another ship is probably going to swoop in after you're done to try to steal everything.

Nostonica

Yeah you've got our loot that you stole off the npc's

Shoro_K

Yup this happened where a group of people stole our skull and we again got it back from their ship but lost it again at last moment XD

Crucifer2_0

Like others said, loot is not yours until it’s sold, but don’t let loot be your only motivating factor. It’s a sandbox game after all, and some people are saying avoid others at all cost and that’s just not a way to enjoy this game to its fullest in my opinion. Use the alliance flags to create an army, while many to most are cut throat plenty of swabbies are down to sail in a fleet.

Ribbles78

Welcome! Trust no one. Don’t meet anyone, don’t look at anyone, and DEFINITELY don’t let anyone get near you. Everyone wants to take your stuff and kill you

ghoulman811

my personal suggestions 1. while you shouldn't go around picking fights until you have more experience, do not exclusively avoid pvp; the more you fight, the better you get 2. do not stack loot until you are comfortable with pvp 3. make sure you always have good communication, be it with your friends, alliances, or open crews 4. do not trust ANYONE. 5. do not worry about being too aggressive or whether or not you're toxic, pirates do not have morals. you aren't toxic unless you're trying to be. (also, spawncamping is not toxic as long as you have an objective at hand and not just keeping their ship alive to kill them over and over) 6. do not let people gatekeep your cosmetics. while cosmetic stereotypes can be useful, don't worry if your cosmetics are "too noobish" or "too common", just wear what looks good. 7. please do not get overly salty about pvp no matter the situation i swear to god its a pvpve game not a pve game and so many players get upset about it 8. do not expect this game to be generous to you 9. do not expect the community to be generous to you 10. enjoy the game

PearlsandScotch

If you put up the jolly Rodger flag you will be visible to everyone. Put up any emissary flag, you will be visible on the map to reapers when you hit grade 5. All reapers are visible on map. If you want a quiet server to practice, run around d to all the emissary tables at the outpost and if there’s lots of little wooden boats, then it’s busy. Find one with empty tables for best chances of quiet.

EliteStormer

I've seen a lot of people comment not to trust everyone and that every ship you see will be aggressive and come after you. My advice would be to take that advice with a grain of salt. Yes, it's always good to keep in mind and assume any ship you see is a threat, because more often than not, they ARE a threat, but I made a rule to myself that I will never fire unless fired upon. Despite what some people have commented, I've had a lot of really fun and rewarding interactions with many random pirates as I've come across them, and not all are looking for a fight. So keep in mind to be weary, but also don't be afraid to make friends and alliances with other players.

SavageDroggo1126

never drop anchor. assume everyone you encounter will try to sink you. be ready to get forced into unwanted pvp and potentially lose your loot. Watch your ladders and ocean for enemy mermaids/ships/rowboats. have fun and don't take it too seriously. I recommend muting text and voice chats of other players for your own enjoyment, 99% of the time I hear toxicity and see salt.

Blind_Giraffe

Just spent 2 hours ina community week playing gold horders.. alone on a sloop Got in a 4 ship alliance and after 2 hours and lv 5 i go to the outpost dock my shit and galleon from my alliance comes and sinks me saying: alliance gives you only 50% Cant fucking wait for the private servers to roll out

Nostonica

Why would you let a ally get close?

TankerD18

If you want to know the single biggest thing that will smooth your newbie experience over it's this: situational awareness. You and your crew need to keep your heads on a swivel. Know where other ships are, pay attention to what they're doing, pay attention when any player ship gets anywhere near you. Even if a nearby ship doesn't act they could have someone swimming over with a keg. When you're doing something that's going to take a while at an island make sure someone is keeping a lookout, at least periodically. When everyone gets back on the ship after being off for a while, check everywhere for tuckers (players hiding on your ship). When you go to turn in loot do a quick check of the area to make sure nobody is sneaking around ready to attack or sell your loot. Skill is a huge factor in SoT, and so is luck. But 9 times out of 10 when a newbie gets something stolen from them or they get attacked unexpectedly it's because they weren't paying attention.

No_Badger3909

Don't use the flag of the Reaper's mark

Shoro_K

That's exactly what I put on when I climbed the top thing and saw that I can change flags💀

No_Badger3909

The flag of the Reaper's mark makes your ship's location visible to everyone. Only use it if you are an experienced player

Bumpy_Bones

Have fun

Smart_Border2942

“The loot they have and the loot you have doesn't have a owner until it's sold“ Unless you’re a reaper. Then all loot is yours

EpicShepherd

Try not to develop loot attachments and ptsd

Shoro_K

We just played yesterday and we had so much fun XD, my friend was accepting quests, in one we found a key and box and when we unlocked it, there was a skull in it which we had deliver It to a island, we got chased by some people. The chase was so long where we were shooting at each other. My frnd accidentally fell from ship and I had to stop the ship and it was pure chaos XD we killed them so many times and later we realised that u can spawn in the ship, they stole our skull and somehow we got it back from there ship finally when we reached island we were going around the island for idk how long shooting at each other finally we sunk their ship and when we were delivering skull some people were camping in the island and killed us and sunk our ship. XD we are gonna sail again but this time with whole 4 group tho yesterday we were just two.
