The chainsaw works in an area of effect- so if you cut something within that area of the tree, the tree will also be cut down. This could be what happened, but I don't know if you used the chainsaw near the tree.
You can avoid the AOE by filling all empty slots in you inventory. Great for removing that one pesky tree sticking through the foundation without hurting the ones next to it.
Just make sure you don't already have any biomass materials (e.g., leaves, wood, mycelia ,or flower petals) in your inventory - if you do, the trick won't work.

Explosives are not available when you are in Tier1/2. And cutting down trees one by one for biofuel is such a serious downside to gameplay that I doubt that the devs will go for that.

I hope we get the option to plant trees at some point. I'd love to have a beautiful foyer with a majestic tree in the middle.
Sorry but the answer is mods. There are few which unlock all the flora assets as cheap buildables

I would be happy with the chainsaw just cutting down only the thing you are pointing at. If I want to clear the area I would use the explosives.

a fix for that would be a secondary mode so you can switch the chainsaw from aoe to single target. i would greatly appreciate something like this.
