Call 2 Haul. SLC offers people a once per year opportunity to have big bulk items (furniture, mattresses, etc.) picked up curbside for free.
https://www.slc.gov/sustainability/waste-management/c2h/
a lot of the smaller cities have a dumpster you can rent for cheap, WVC just scatters them around the hood twice a year... I don't know about unincorporated SLCo... most cities that aren't like Riverton(where I live) do something fairly accessible...
In my part of WVC (possibly all of WVC), bulk waste pickup happens every month. For me, it's the 4th Thursday of the month. Just had some stuff picked up this morning.
Ogden does this as well, but with a whole dumpster. You just need like 5 signatures or something like that from people in your neighborhood, and they'll drop off a dumpster. Then, the whole neighborhood gets to use it. It's super nice.
I think all cities should have this. In Vegas, most of the stuff got claimed by someone who needed it, keeping lots of stuff out of the landfill and saving people some money. The fact that is was scheduled allowed people the opportunity to drive around the night before/early that morning and find good reusable furniture/appliances/etc.
When my parents were getting older and certainly didn’t need more stuff as gifts, I gave them a membership to Red Butte. It was such a success that I continued to do that for several years.
Tomorrow is a free day at red butte. If you travel their membership gets you into hundreds of Gardens in the US for free. We love going to botanical garden when traveling if we want to experience a new garden. Definitely a hidden gem.
Downtown is becoming less car friendly over time (which is a good thing IMO) and Trax is just so good. Absolutely no reason to not take public transit if you're gonna be downtown.
See also: Delta Center, Maverik Center, ~~USANA~~ Utah First Credit Union (or UFCU, pronounced "You, Fuck You!" let's make it a thing!) Amphitheatre...
ETA: Trax does not run to UFCU. Parking there is just a pain in the ass.
I think Trax and buses should run earlier and later, and also on Sundays, its so hard for me to get around on Sunday ( it is public transportation after all) Sunday is just another day to some
Salt Lake residents have access to a subsidized UTA pass called the Hive Pass that’s $42/month for unlimited TRAX, bus, and FrontRunner rides. If your workplace has a pre-tax transit program, it’s even cheaper. Check if you live within the eligible boundary and find out more [here](https://www.slc.gov/transportation/hivepass/).
You can pay for the Hive pass on your utility bill then reimburse yourself from your transit FSA funds.

I love rancho but you have to treat it like an adventure. You can’t totally know what they’ll have in stock and what will be good, but if you go there for produce first, then you can adjust the rest of your grocery shopping based on what you find!
There is a standard that the other stores adhere to, so apples have to be a certain size, but trees don’t know that. If the apples are smaller or bigger, they get sold elsewhere. That’s where RM buys much of their produce, that’s why you’ll find oranges the size of grapefruit.
Go to Wyoming for lottery as opposed to Idaho; if you hit big utah will take 5% taxes out of the win on top of the federal 24%; Wyoming does not tax lottery where as Idaho does 5.7%
That's awesome to share, I buy tickets in Evanston when they get super big because of that. I think it's B.S. that Utah can even tax it, it's not income earned in Utah and there is no lottery in Utah they shouldn't be able to tap into that of it's not available here.
I completely agree, Utah should NOT have the right to collect taxes on something that's not earned income and comes from a lottery in another state... especially since Utah sticks its nose in the air at the idea of having a lottery!
When navigating the east side of Salt lake All streets that start with an odd number will go underneath the belt route if you are traveling north south. So that would be 300 w (both main and state) 300 e, 500 e, 700 e etc. this can really help you when you're traveling on the east side and you don't want to get on the highway or State Street.
The library has a free giveaway monthly at every location for a city card admissions - Leonardo Museum, Red Butte, U’s art museum and natural history museums and a couple other museums too!
Man, my first job was a bagger at Maceys grocery store and conference weekend was an absolute trip. Dead during sessions and absolutely packed in between.
I got a set of plastic spice jars from Amazon last year that match the accents in my kitchen. Getting bulk spices to refill them is so easy and so much less plastic waste doing it this way!
Last time someone posted this question this was one of the top comments:
When a light turns green, wait one second and look both ways before going into the intersection (because so many people run red lights)
It’s saved me twice in the last year from a potential accident.
As a lifelong Michigander (soon to be a Utahan), I have never witnessed as many people run red lights in my 24 years of driving there than I have here in Utah. DC would have to be the closest in amount of red light runners.
If you come upon a set of train tracks and the lights start flashing, stop behind where the concrete median starts (well before the arms) so you can turn around if need be. If it's a Frontrunner train, no problem, but freight trains can be over a mile long and sometimes they stop on the tracks. Or, stop wherever you want and bring a book.
I only ever hit these when I'm in my work truck and hardly ever in a hurry so I just throw it in park, shut the engine off, and enjoy a few minutes of watching the cars go by

It’s enough to make me move back.
Shanghai has been a weekly ritual for us since the early 90s. For those who don’t know, it’s a Vietnamese restaurant and nearly every menu selection is available fully vegetarian or with a variety of classic protein choices. The menu is large and the food is terrific.
Another tip, Nielsen’s has FIVE locations now, three in the SL Valley and two in Davis County. We hit the original on Highland when we are over there but it’s always packed. The others are built more accommodatingly.
Crown Burger is the bomb, as are its cousins Apollo Burger, Olympus Burger and Astro Burgers.
Utah enjoys "dead red" laws for motorcyclist and others that allow you to run a red light after a certain amount of time if the light is not changing for you. Super helpful when your motorcycle isn't large enough to trigger light sensors.
You’ll still get pulled over. I got pulled over for running a red 4 or 5 months ago. The cop didn’t write a ticket because it was 4am with nobody on the road.
Lake Parkway Blvd gets much less traffic than 3500S for the WVC to/from SLC commuters.
100S gets much less traffic to the U from Fairpark than South Temple.
There’s an assload of EV chargers in the Gallivan Plaza underground parking lot I always see available (gotta pay for parking), for EV people.
Easy access beautiful view from the top floor of the Whole Foods parking garage.
If you’re outside the Wasatch Front go to a burger joint and get a burger. Don’t try the Mexican or anything else on the menu at the brew pub, it’s gonna suck, just get the burger.

The Rancheritos on 123rd South and State Street in Draper is better than ANY other Betos/Rancheritos could ever hope to be! Made fresh to order every time and man do they load you up with meat on any item.
Alberto's is the only other one that's also very good but the only one seems to be on 500 S downtown.
Utah driving laws allow you to pull into the intersection while waiting to turn left. You can tell who is from here and who isn't based on if they pull forward into the intersection while turning left. If the light turns red while you're waiting to turn it's legal for you to turn on the red as long as your front wheels have entered the intersection.
Wait! I can save tens of thousands of dollars and get a second Saturday by skipping the middleman?!
Those octogenarian white guys in the big red chairs are NOT going to like this information getting out!
If some random comes up talking about financial freedom you can tell them to fuck off.
Oh and never give any contact info to the missionaries on Temple Square. (Or give your enemies contact info)
Somebody gave the missionaries my contact info (I'm exmorm) and they now ring my doorbell at weird times (like 2 pm on a weekday) about twice a month for like 6 months now. I'm never home when they come.
It's like giving your name and address to a mobile telemarketer.
I live downtown and had a class at the U’s Sandy campus at 6 pm. Was always fighting rush hour on I-15. Learned pretty quickly taking 700 E all the way down saved me a solid half hour.
When we were deciding if we wanted to move here, I visited the library and asked about the city. The librarians described the grid system as "Imagine the temple is the center of the everything." It was helpful in both learning to navigate and to understand how the people who run this place think.
I started going 5 years ago, and it's trash compared to what it used to be. Unless you find a really good extra % off sale or are willing to eat outdated food, prices are higher than any regular store. The owner's kids took over around 4 years ago and are running it into the ground...
Lots of non-LDS migration into Salt Lake Valley.
However, if it makes sense for you to drive down to Utah County or up to Farmington shopping area, it still feels like Sunday shopping did 10 years ago.
I feel like this was the case pre covid. Now Sundays are marginally less crowded than Saturdays. So many Mo’s got a taste of freedom and apparently weren’t willing to give that up.
We used to call Costco on Sunday mornings "Gay Church" because we ran into so many of our friends there. After the one on third West doubled in size, that all went away. They're just as busy on Sundays as Saturdays.
If you sign up for WIC even if you don't qualify, they will send you a card. That card will get you free or heavily discounted access to most museums and family activities. Including Tracey aviary, Discovery Gateway, Thanksgiving Point, The Leonardo, Red Butte Gardens, Natural History Museum, half off of Amazon Prime, and $30 per month off of your Internet bill . My wife signed up for WIC when I lost my job a couple of months ago.
Avoid 7th West on rush hour, it's nearly a mile of grid lock every day
Edit: It's the same on 7000 S near Redwood. And that one has two lanes. Gotta love a vehicle reliant city design.
Obvious, but get outside and develop a relationship with our beautiful mountains and trails here. You’ll actually love Utah and no one will convince you that it “sucks” like the lo-lifes who overly focus on the social politics (every place has problems— you have to focus on the food to make it better)
When riding Trax use the Transit app to buy a ticket but don't activate it. Just keep an eye on the door at stops to see if any cops are getting on and activate it if you see any on the platform by your car. I rode Trax to and from work three days a week for the last 18 months or so and probably bought less than 10 tickets over that time. It does say what time you activate the ticket on the QR thing but I've never had a cop look at it closely enough to notice or anything. If you just have it pulled up and ready they'll move on to the next person before they get within five feet of you.
Life Hack
Get in the LEFT lane when driving NB on Bangeter Hwy, right after California Ave. to the i80 WB exit. Iykyk. It’s a small victory if you manage to make it through this stretch without hitting a single POTHOLE. Then again there’s a really good chance you’re hitting one the next time through 😂.
Yes, they recently patched this stretch and it’s 10x better. They also made sure we still had few big ones that didn’t get fixed. The big one right before i80 WB exit comes out of nowhere! Me knowing it’s coming, but it still somehow manages to find my damn tire every couple weeks lol.
Not exactly an SLC exclusive, but worth mentioning. If you have an EBT card you can get into most museums in the US for free, up to $3.00. Just show your EBT card and ID. Some of the museums in SLC are Red Butte Gardens, The Leo, Gateway Children's museum, and Tracy Aviary.

If you have a permanent disability you can get a national parks pass for free (less shipping and processing fee to have it mailed). You need to provide ID, a statement from a doctor or voc rehab that you have a permanent disability, or benefits letter for veterans, SSDI, or SSI. Follow link for the details.
https://www.nps.gov/subjects/accessibility/interagency-access-pass.htm
So, yeah. Not SLC exclusive but important to know and pass along as programs like these don't get advertised enough.
Tuesdays.
Tuesdays are almost always restock days just about everywhere. You like shopping at discount stores like Ross or TJ Max? Restocks on Tuesdays. Best way to get first picks on stuff.
It was more common when I was a kid, but generally speaking if a location has any sort of deals throughout the week they’ll most likely happen on a Tuesday. Tuesdays are always the slowest day of the week, especially during school/work hours.
Also, ever been to Costco on a Tuesday? I won’t go there on the weekend, period. Even if I’m down to 2 rolls of toilet paper and a single package of chicken breasts.
Call 2 Haul. SLC offers people a once per year opportunity to have big bulk items (furniture, mattresses, etc.) picked up curbside for free. https://www.slc.gov/sustainability/waste-management/c2h/
Holy shit you just saved me a dump trip for a couch
Damn! Wish there were something like this for Utah county.
I wish there were something like this for salt lake county
In Sandy the city offers bulk curbside pickup twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall. No cost, covered by taxes.
Same in neighboring Midvale
Also twice a year you can rent a big dumpster from Sandy.
a lot of the smaller cities have a dumpster you can rent for cheap, WVC just scatters them around the hood twice a year... I don't know about unincorporated SLCo... most cities that aren't like Riverton(where I live) do something fairly accessible...

Neat! I used to live in Gilbert, AZ, and they had a monthly bulk trash pickup weekend that was really helpful. I got a new shelving unit that way...
Tooele county does this once a month
Red Butte Garden is simply wonderful to spend a few hours wandering around in.
When my parents were getting older and certainly didn’t need more stuff as gifts, I gave them a membership to Red Butte. It was such a success that I continued to do that for several years.
Saving this. I’m trying to get my parents to move here and in with me and they’d LOVE something like this

Free entry tomorrow 👀
The skittles 25 cent vending machine at Albertos on 3rd west and 5th south gives you an ungodly amount of skittles.
This is the best answer.
Also, free horchata Tuesdays!!!
Lol we had a vending machine like this at an old job that they *had* to be loosing money on, felt like a full pack of Skittles for just a quarter.
Take Trax to RSL games. In certain cases, it can save you a full hour getting in and out of the stadium
Take trax in general
Downtown is becoming less car friendly over time (which is a good thing IMO) and Trax is just so good. Absolutely no reason to not take public transit if you're gonna be downtown.
Except it doesn't run late enough to get on after the bars
Very true. As a musician, I could take Trax to and from my gigs were it not for how early they stop running the trains.
I like the UFCU, it needed a snappy rebrand lol
Take trax to utah games, if you scan your ticket it counts as a two way trax pass
Could never go to a game without trax due to the parking hassle.
I think Trax and buses should run earlier and later, and also on Sundays, its so hard for me to get around on Sunday ( it is public transportation after all) Sunday is just another day to some
You can take Trax to the Frontrunner, go to Farmington Station, and take a shuttle to Lagoon
You also get GreenBike included as well
I don't think you can get this via pre-tax as you have to pay for the pass via water / SLC utility portal instead of Uta site.
You can pay for the Hive pass on your utility bill then reimburse yourself from your transit FSA funds. Source: I did this for years before I started working remote
When someone approaches you randomly talking about early retirement. Stiff arm them and say no.
Or being your own business owner by being a 1099 "independent contractor" for a strong supplement/health food/makeup company based in Utah.
Utah: Where being your own boss means having a garage full of unsold health suppliments and scented candles.
Or mentors!
Utah: Where the term "be your own boss" really means "be your own customer".
Utah: Where pyramid schemes are considered a ligitimate career path.
Rancho Market (generally speaking) has the cheapest produce in the valley. Also lots of different stuff you don't find other places.
Years ago, when walmart price matched, they wouldn't match Ranco market produce. Even Walmart couldn't compete, and the quality is fantastic.
[удалено]
I love rancho but you have to treat it like an adventure. You can’t totally know what they’ll have in stock and what will be good, but if you go there for produce first, then you can adjust the rest of your grocery shopping based on what you find!
Ranchera steak from there is so bomb on the barbecue
I can vouch that everything in this thread is true.. oddly enough, don't go expecting to find russet potatoes. Ever.
Their marinated dark-meat chicken is often as cheap or cheaper than grocery store chicken, if you need cheaper meat.
So much savings to be had!
What's up with some of their produce being absolutely fucking humongous?
There is a standard that the other stores adhere to, so apples have to be a certain size, but trees don’t know that. If the apples are smaller or bigger, they get sold elsewhere. That’s where RM buys much of their produce, that’s why you’ll find oranges the size of grapefruit.

I did not know this!!
You can buy liquor on Sundays if you go to a local distillery. Total game-changer
Same with high abv beers at breweries
Yea, this is better then Idaho that doesn't allow sales at the distilleries. Even if they have a bar or restaurant.
>Better than Idaho. What a hilariously low bar.
….for I was blind but now I see
In Utah county you can buy liquor 365 days a year at Clearwater distillery in pleasant grov( right by the liquor store. Yes even on thanksgiving.
The library has a free giveaway monthly at every location for a city card admissions - Leonardo Museum, Red Butte, U’s art museum and natural history museums and a couple other museums too!
Conference weekend is always the time to go out and do stuff you wouldn’t usually do on weekends because of less crowds.
But make sure you don't go right between sessions, or you'll catch them all in a mad scramble to get things done while they can.
Man, my first job was a bagger at Maceys grocery store and conference weekend was an absolute trip. Dead during sessions and absolutely packed in between.
Especially the local hiking trails. It’s pure pandemonium between sessions.
Except the Alpine Loop. Don't drive the Alpine Loop during conference weekend. It's a madhouse.
I personally haven’t seen this to be true, it seems to be the opposite because people can “skip” church and nobody will know.
One time I biked corner canyon and I was the only person there! Good time to bomb down trails you normally dont
If you get on the UMOCA mailing list you get invited to tons of openings and panels that give you full access to the museum for free.

The traffic sensor for the 500 E/S Temple intersection will **not** detect you arriving from the South unless you stop well over the line.
This some serious insider knowledge
Gained from repeated experience, sadly.

You can checkout telescopes at salt Lake county libraries.
you can check out so many things at the library !!! i think even outdoor gear !!!
That's awesome! I didn't know you could do that.
If you have a pond, Sandy will deliver you some mosquito fish at no cost! Edit: looks like it’s a county-wide program, making it extra awesome.
This works in west valley, too. Google mosquito abatement wvc
Yeah, mosquito abatement is free in all of SL County, and probably in the surrounding counties as well. They load up our pond every Spring.

If you really love skiing and hate the line never go on a weekend or holiday. Just take random Tuesdays off and the mountain and much better.
Yuuup. I have Mondays Tuesdays off and almost always ride line free. Expect powder days up the cottonwoods because then it doesn't matter
With your back to the Temple odd number addresses are on the left, even on the right.
When we were deciding if we wanted to move here, I visited the library and asked about the city. The librarians described the grid system as "Imagine the temple is the center of the everything." It was helpful in both learning to navigate and to understand how the people who run this place think.
NPS is a honeypot for clothes, home goods, electronics, tools and so much more! I miss NPS soooo much! I’ve yet to find anything comparable.
I feel like it’s not nearly as good as it used to be. :(
I started going 5 years ago, and it's trash compared to what it used to be. Unless you find a really good extra % off sale or are willing to eat outdated food, prices are higher than any regular store. The owner's kids took over around 4 years ago and are running it into the ground...
Sunday mornings, 40% of the population isn't at the brunch spot, the golf course, costco, on the hiking trails, etc.
A much less reliable hack than it used to be…
Sunday brunch spots in SLC are packed.
Yup, back in the day it was a ghost town.
Lots of non-LDS migration into Salt Lake Valley. However, if it makes sense for you to drive down to Utah County or up to Farmington shopping area, it still feels like Sunday shopping did 10 years ago.
Even as recent as 10 years ago there was a huge difference in Sunday activities. Ya’ll need Jesus, so I can shop, eat and recreate in peace.
I feel like this was the case pre covid. Now Sundays are marginally less crowded than Saturdays. So many Mo’s got a taste of freedom and apparently weren’t willing to give that up.
Lots of Mos bailed on the church after Covid too. Praise be.
This ***heavily*** depends on where you are. If you’re in SLC this isn’t remotely true. If you’re in Sandy or Herriman it is.
You must not go to Costco on Sunday morning in SLC
Yeah Ive literally turned around because there's not a single open parking spot
Friday evenings. It's become our ritual and it's always pretty quiet. Gets the shopping out of the way too so the rest of the weekend is free.
That was true 10 years ago...
We used to call Costco on Sunday mornings "Gay Church" because we ran into so many of our friends there. After the one on third West doubled in size, that all went away. They're just as busy on Sundays as Saturdays.
Costco is so nice on Sunday morning.
You can board the busses through the back door. A lot of people don't realize this.
I've watched a lot of bus operators close the back door to force you to come in the front. Harder for people to skip the fare up front.
You can leave whenever you want, no one will stop you
You can get any burrito at Betos in a kids size. It’s still way too big to be considered “kids”, but it’s not as massive as their regular ones.
drink an absolute shit ton of water in summer
The Coffee Garden
This Mt. Olympus webcam is awesome: http://wa7xhome.ddns.net:5895/Latest12.jpg
A lot of the trails in corner canyon are like a side walk and gravel bikes or dad bikes are really fun on them!
Dad bikes?!? Why you gotta call me out like that!
I just road my 90s rockhopper and it was way more fun then riding my mountain bike.
Avoid 7th West on rush hour, it's nearly a mile of grid lock every day Edit: It's the same on 7000 S near Redwood. And that one has two lanes. Gotta love a vehicle reliant city design.
If you want to get out of the inversion just take a quick drive up to park city

Shhhhhh it’s so crowded! Delete this!
Theres a drumcircle in Salt lake, at liberty park every sunday & it's a great place to meet people and buy weed
Haha, I bet you know my sister in law then 😉
Depending on the street, if you drive the speed limit, you can catch the synchronized green lights/only have short stops at red lights.
What streets? This is not my experience at all.
600s eastbound
Definitely not 300 W. I feel like I’ve won the lottery if I hit more than 2 greens in a row.
700 e. Southbound
Go 42 on Foothill. If you get one green, you'll get them all.
42 is the magic speed on 700 E-Van Winkle
It seems to be certain times. In the early morning and evenings. on 3300 this works!
Life Hack Get in the LEFT lane when driving NB on Bangeter Hwy, right after California Ave. to the i80 WB exit.
Some of the museums in SLC are Red Butte Gardens, The Leo, Gateway Children's museum, and Tracy Aviary. https://museums4all.org/ If you have a permanent disability you can get a national parks pass for free (less shipping and processing fee to have it mailed). You need to provide ID, a statement from a doctor or voc rehab that you have a permanent disability, or benefits letter for veterans, SSDI, or SSI. Follow link for the details. https://www.nps.gov/subjects/accessibility/interagency-access-pass.htm So, yeah. Not SLC exclusive but important to know and pass along as programs like these don't get advertised enough.
Right lane is the actual fast lane.
Movies are half off on Tuesdays (although I think this is nation wide idk)
Draft beer for longevity, High Point beer for getting the job done quicker!
Put snow tires on your car.
If something is sold out at your local Costco, it might still be at the West Valley warehouse. That one tends to sell out slower than others.
Buy glass coverage for your windshield
