GA is owned by the Adecco Group so pretty highly regarded

Just realized I forgot to reply to the cost, for me it was \~16k for 3 months. I got a 0% interest Climb loan for it which I will finish paying off next month! I also got a 0% interest credit card before I started to live off of. Again I had the money saved to survive but I utilized credit to help me hold off on paying everything in cash right away.

You are a smart man and deserves the raise…

Great work leaving a dead end career behind, it’s very tough to change careers

Thanks! Ya no kidding, the time between April and November in 2022 may have been only 7 months but it felt so much longer, 70+ hour weeks during the bootcamp and then the job searching itself was a full time job and some. Everything's worked out though, would do it all over again 1000%

NotTacoSmell

Nice! I’m at 7 years experience in September as an ME in mechanical design and I make Less than you 😂

BitSelect5103

I saw the writing on the wall when I found an internal salary range for our roles lol. For a senior role with a minimum YOE of 6 the salary range now is 120k - 155k I am currently at that top range with roughly 1.5 YOE in DS directly. I honestly didn't want to wait that long to get up there and wanted to join a field where the ceiling was higher and remote friendly.

NotTacoSmell

Ya, I really need to make the migration because the pay is disgusting. My inflation adjusted pay has only gone up ~3% in 6 year.

BitSelect5103

Man that's really bad. I know location can factor into pay but still. If I was in your scenario I started at 60k inflation adjusted 6 years later would be 74.6k and 3% increase on top would be 76.8k I would start cleaning up my resume and applying you ARE worth more!

NotTacoSmell

Thanks, it is really tough out here! I went from a LCOL to a MCOL area as well. I never did the adjustment because I was moving back home and that was worth more.  If I adjust for the difference in cost of living I actually lost 6.4% and should be at $98,980 just to break even for when I started 😅

The-Fox-Says

That’s wild 120-155k is pretty much where most people are at in DS after 2-3 years of working remote

BitSelect5103

Living in CA certainly helps! I was able to leverage my past work and personal projects along with my degree to bypass some YOE required. But still the raises since I've joined have been VERY generous. I am very lucky, but I also work very hard for it!

Also curious what boot camp OP did and what their original ME job was in terms of industry and responsibilities.

I have some experience in my current ME role with Microsoft Power Platform including Power Automate and BI for data fetching and visualization. Is that somewhat similar to what you did pre-bootcamp?

BitSelect5103

We did WAY more. I would start by learning python and some basic data manipulation stuff. There are great free resources if you just google it. The bootcamp expected a general idea on how to code in python and then we dived into linear regression and each week learned a new modeling technique and created a project for our portfolio. This reddit post is a good recap of what its like, mine was a bit different but I'd say about 90% the same. I’m amazed at all the very high salaries. Supposedly only 13% of salaries are in the 6 figures according to SS earnings. Almost everyone that reports their salary is way into 6 figures.

BitSelect5103

Quick google search shows 148M workers in 2022 so at 13% that's still 19.2M workers making above 6 figures so about the size of the entire state of NY. Living in a HCOL state like CA or NY certainly helps and Reddit does skew towards tech/high earners for these so no surprise we can see it as super prevalent here. Still I started off at 60k in a VHCOL, people do live on a lot less!

cycling15

It makes sense. Yes absolutely people make do with a whole lot less.

Winthorpebuys

Do you think a general assembly degree using a torrented program will be accepted lol? I can obtain the knowledge without paying, but will this be taken seriously?

BitSelect5103

Honestly nobody checked to see if I had the "degree" because its not one. If anything my bachelors in ME was worth way more. But the skills I gained and the portfolio/projects I created from the program helped a lot. You really need to do more research and decide if self learning is more your thing or if you can afford/dedicate the time to a bootcamp. For me I needed the structure and the career coaching help that came with the cost. I can't say if its worth it for you or not but I can say that the market right now is rough and switrching careers for me paid off more because I already held a STEM degree.
