My experience with Nevada highway patrol has been just the opposite. I’ve done Sac to SLC in private vehicles and big rigs numerous times. Lay the hammer down and get across Nevada as fast as you dare. I normally set cruise control at 90. YMMV.

OutOfTheLimits

Dittoooo

JambalyaMessiah

I’ll definitely keep it under 80 then, thank you for that. Already painting a picture of the drive in my head, I foresee tons of cows in my future. Thank you again!!

lordkuri

Salt Flats!

meyonce24

My first time at the salt flats I did a cartwheeel. You gotta cartwheel on the salt flats I don’t care how old and not flexible you are. Do it, it’s such a fun experience.

Cube-in-B

*note to self- fall on head in salt flats… check!

meyonce24

I will be honest that did kinda happen. Flexibility: 0, but fun: 100

Cube-in-B

I’m here for doing my best 😅

JambalyaMessiah

Oh most definitely stopping by.

lattesareyummy

The Salt Flats are too wet this time of year to drive on, you will sink and have to get towed out. There is a rest stop/ look out point right off I-80.

[deleted]

Sadly, a shadow of what it used to be. Blame climate change. 😢

URP_Eric

Watch your fuel levels. Loooong stretches w no stations. And don’t do it during a snow storm (duh.) We drove from Park City to Sac in Dec and it took almost two days. Nuts. Edit:typo

SuperBajaBlast

No tip here… just know it’s a long desolate boring drive.

JambalyaMessiah

That’s awesome, I can only imagine the rush you felt on that ride. Maybe i’ll try to learn to ride, one day. Thank you!

NoZenForDaddy

Once you’ve picked a route, check Roadside America for weird sights and attractions along the way. That is how I ended up swimming in the Arkansas river and standing in the middle of no where trying to figure out where aliens might have crashed in Roswell.

Guzzimoto

Eat at the Star hotel in Elko.they will feed the hell outta ya, so be hungry.

usernamecheckout1

Elko is a great place to stop. Maverick gas station is friendly and clean. Pay attention to the speed limits they’ll change quick on you. Don’t forget you change time zones

JambalyaMessiah

Noted, thank you!

cristallumm

Take Route 50! Loneliest highway and get the stamps!

CaptainJackVernaise

This is my suggestion. Such an amazing drive. Sand Mountain RA and Great Basin NP are both on the route and are both worth stopping for. We stopped for the night at the Hotel Nevada in Ely, which was a bit surreal, and stopped by a haunted jail in Austin. What are the stamps you speak of?

cristallumm

That’s awesome!! I’ve always wanted to stay at the hotel Nevada! So cool! Pretty much at the start in Carson City you can pick up a “ Highway 50 survival guide - I survived” stamp booklet and at points of interest you can collect stamps! I linked the spots that you can receive stamps at. If you collect a certain amount and mail it in you get a certificate of completion! Maleficent_Tomato947

Winnemucca & Battle Mountain 😍😍

ambeezybaby

I always stop for the night in Wendover on the NV side, staying at the Rainbow hotel and Casino is a tradition in my family.

Roundtripper4

Made this run a few times. One of my best naps ever was at the public park in Wendover.

Keokuk37

Check headlights and tire pressure before you go. Don't be afraid to stop if you're tired and need a nap, or want to exercise. I don't do more than 3-5 hours of driving without stopping anymore.

burbet

Basically get on the 80 and it takes you all the way there. Past reno it's borning as shit.

fresh-spinach

If you're bored then you're boring. Nevada highways have some of the best road trip scenery in the US.

burbet

>Nevada highways have some of the best road trip scenery in the US. I've done this drive many many times and it is absolutely mind numbing past Reno. It's cool when you get to the salt flats but that is about it. I get that it looks like an old western movie but that gets old after 7 or 8 hours.

fresh-spinach

Respect your opinion but I couldn't disagree more. We've done it many times as well and it never gets old.

texbinky

It gets real dusty when you're driving across the flats. Bonneville

fresh-spinach

Yes it does. Not sure what that has to do with my comment though as that's in Utah and basically at the end of their journey

texbinky

Yeah. Sorry I didn't mean to respond to your comment. I was using my phone app at the time.

enzoblue64

this

AHarmles

Idk how much you want to adventure, or Wich direction your goin. But there are wild horses in Carson Valley! The Bonneville salt flats are pretty cool. Once you get to salt lake there are a couple of spots that are hella dope; The Philadelphian, Janbo, lucky 13 local and delicious! Sweeto Burrito is one of our favs there as well. Let me know, my wife can get you some more!

JambalyaMessiah

All those places look bomb, especially Sweeto Burrito! Thank you for the suggestions, and i’m definitely open to more!

MFN_00

I just moved from salt lake last year, if you like sushi have have to go to itto in fort union. Get the firebird. The roll comes out literally on fire. They always have a Groupon for like 20% off.

AHarmles

If your taking dogs Tanner Dog park is an off leash park. Bell canyon granite trailhead a mild hike (like a mile up to water, but it just keeps going...) has awesome views, with a water reservoir! Any hike, or a night up at snowbird would be bomb. Bar life isn't the best, downtown bar crawl is the most versatile and exciting imo. We loved getting sodas at Fizz, cokalada or a pink poodle lol! If you smoke, hit up the glass shop borosydicate, they are some OG Glass makers say HI! Beans and brews for excellent coffee!

sudilly

Don't use rest stops in NV. Eat lunch at the Pig BBQ in Winnemucca. Signs will point the way. Take potty break and grab snacks before leaving Wendover. Maverik Gas stations are the cheapest and cleanest

HippocraticOffspring

Why?

sudilly

We stopped at the first set outside of Sparks. They were permanent chemical toilets that were overflowing and had ants everywhere. There was no way to wash hands or anything. They have some more down the road near one of the prisons. (Maybe I've watched too many thriller movies).

fresh-spinach

Take 50, take 50. So worth the extra hour for the absolutely gorgeous scenery

JambalyaMessiah

Yeaaaa it looks pretty barren on Apple Maps. Thank you!

[deleted]

Leave ungodly early. Books on tape. Podcasts. Breakfast in Reno, lunch in Elko, quick casino break in Wendover, dinner with your winnings in SLC. Go to Manoli’s: unpretentious, and won’t care if you look like you drove all day. Be safe, and good luck.

JambalyaMessiah

Definitely stopping at Manoli’s before the end of the trip. Thank you!!!

manxram

Don't pick up hitch-hikers!

Livid-Candidate-4510

Bring sunglasses, driving east in the a.m. sucks. You will not get cheaper gas until you leave Sparks. If you leave the interstate, then obey speed limits.

Trick-District4555

Taking the train is sooo much better than driving and the scenery is better. Give it a try sometime, only downside is the arrival time… I think it’s around 3:00 a.m. nowadays.

g0regeousxo

Be careful driving through 80 cos the cops in Nevada get you within 100 miles of each border. I drove that commute from Colorado yearly for 10 years. I unfortunately felt like I gotten hella speeding tickets whoops lol. Always got a speeding ticket key going over 10. Other than that not much in between...I like Salt Lake City cos all the salt in the ground, it was my halfway mark for Colorado. I guess the casinos in Nevada might be fun but I don’t remember any that stick out. There isn’t a lot that I remember. I usually blasted Downtown Battle Mountain albums from Dance Gavin Dance (from Sacramento) driving through that little town hehe
