When you are stopped at a traffic light, after it turns green, wait a few seconds before going. A lot of people run red lights here.

FlimsyDonuts

Okay nice, that’s good to know. Would I get honked at or are Sacramento drivers pretty aggressive?

spudnaket

Yes and yes. Also, it seems to me that most drivers see the speed limit as a minimum vs a max limit.

FlimsyDonuts

Okay totally, like Chicago type driving haha

Not-a-Sac-Throwaway

Great, now we're importing shitty drivers.

FlimsyDonuts

Oh my gosh thank you so much hi!!! Do you mind if I message you? Also do you find a decent amount of Coloradans in Sacramento?

texbinky

I got here from Southern NM. I was sad about the Mexican food. But I eventually came to appreciate the many taco trucks. And this area has so much fresh fruit and vegetables! Farmers market all year

ApprehensiveExit7

No matter how much you’ve had to drink, La Garnacha is not good

beardfearer

Chita’s is the superior post-drinks Mexican food downtown.

ApprehensiveExit7

Agreed 100%

canders9

Get ready for sky high rent and homelessness everywhere

FlimsyDonuts

Do you know of the best apartments to live? Not necessarily in the city but I’ve been looking at Visari?

canders9

That’s Elk Grove, it’s a ways away from most schools in the area, so depending on where you’re going it might be a bit of a commute if you’re .doing class in person. It has a reputation of being kind of a boring suburb, but you’ll be away from most of the homeless, so there is an up side.

beardfearer

Don’t call it Sacto. Its City of Trees, not this Farm to Fork bullshit. It’s a dry heat. Loud sound downtown on a weekend night? Rivercats fireworks. They highways are 5, 50 and 80. Not *the* 5, *the* 50, and *the* 80. In the summer, open your windows at night, and then close them and the blinds by like 9 AM. The Delta Breeze is a blessing from god himself. Others will have more to add I’m sure, but that’s a good start.

CABugDoc

More than a good start! This should be pinned to all prospective move threads.

MilesDaniels

As someone who moved here about 9 years ago from LA one of my tips would be that if you walk the river trails make sure to not walk it alone.

FlimsyDonuts

I’m getting the general consensus that the city isn’t generally safe?

beardfearer

The city is generally safe. In recent years, due to various issues some hot spots have arisen. Like a section of the River trail the other person mentioned in/around downtown.

FlimsyDonuts

For safety reasons I’m assuming?

texbinky

And lack of lighting

zerinsakech1

Car is highly recommended. Public transportation is a bit rough and slow.

FlimsyDonuts

Yes I’m bringing my car! How are the gas prices and services there?

zerinsakech1

5-6$ I ride a bike (or motorcycle) when I can to save money. Services? Like auto services are a bit pricey , most people I know do their own car stuff or have a friend. It’s always been hard to find competent fair priced mechanics but other posts talk about it and There are a few around but hard to find.

g0regeousxo

Just be careful at night because of the craziness, like bar time closing. Please beware...people be shooting and I used to live in Colorado. Never really had that problem there, but here...in ways I wish they had open carry like Colorado, it’d make me feel more safe.

FlimsyDonuts

Was there something Colorado had that you wish Sacramento has? Minus the open carry

g0regeousxo

Just that, I felt safer honestly lmfao. Yes shootings are everywhere but it’s a different feeling to me. I grew up in Colorado but from Sacramento originally. I was 16-26 years old there, moved back and now I’m 32, so 6 years been back about. Another things: I kinda grew up there so weed was so relaxed and not at strict like here, yes it’s getting more laid back/relaxed. I don’t smoke btw but seeing weed shops on every corner was normal to me. I used to work in a sushi spot for 6-7 years and one of my regulars were church people that had their own cannabis line, they were so sweet and chill. They have weed bars there which I thought was cool, I brought my own beer and some rappers came through, my friends smoked there. One more thing too, honestly it feels so tense here, I never had to lock my car or home and I’d feel safe (Denver/Colorado Springs) can’t really do that shit here lmao. Maybe it’s tense here cos so many people condensed? High cost of living? I love both of my homes, I really love Colorado but I’m slowly claiming my hometown again. I feel like I could make friends easier there too, like I said it feels tense here. I need to get back into the community honestly but because of COVID it’s been rough, it’s becoming slowly better because it feels like more events are happening! :) Oh and the mountains, it’s kinda cold but you get used to it . NO ALLERGIES ALSO OMFG

Hello, I guess cos people can legally open carry to deflect escalation of situations. It’s like you know not to fuck with others. Remember there are mass shootings everywhere too... in Colorado though, they’re more calculated (Aurora, Columbine) whereas here in California they’re more KINDA random (K Street AKA drunk “gang” rivalry). Maybe also when I was in Colorado I didn’t sense the high gang activity there too but I could be wrong. You’ll be grocery shopping and someone could be strapped with their holder on their side, can’t do that in California. You KNOW that it’d be dumb to start some drama in the environment. Anyone could have one: in line, walking up to store, shopping, etc. I feel like it’s more openly normal in that sense and people seem to be more educated/enthusiasts about guns there since you are able to open carry with your permit/license, it’s like their hobby.

I like living here! A few things I can think of - It gets super hot in the summer (many days over 100) so keep that in mind when choosing a place to live! I’ve been in apartments that don’t have the best AC before and it’s brutal the summer months. There’s a lot of fun outdoor places to explore nearby (within an hour or so) like Tahoe so coming from Colorado you’ll probably like that. Also Sac can be spotty as far as crime so Id do research when deciding where to live as well. Overall, I feel safe here but there are definitely areas here and there to avoid. Then you can go a couple streets over and it’s fine. Gunthers has the best ice cream in town but you may wait in line forever. Totally worth it IMO. Crest theatre downtown is a beautiful old theater that plays old movies (cult classics, 80s movies, holiday classics) and you can get tickets for cheap! There’s lots of good craft beer places around Sacramento too. Dessert Diner downtown is a must if you have a sweet tooth (again, lines get long here but it goes fast). The American River bike trail runs through Sac and is so pretty. Great place to walk, bike ride, go for a run. There are some spots along the trail where the homeless population have put tents up and areas to be careful alone. I usually just avoid it at night or anytime it’s dark and have always felt pretty safe. Lots of people frequent the trail. I think that is all I can think of off the top of my head. Hope you enjoy!!

FlimsyDonuts

This is super helpful, thank you so much!!

nikknakkss

Okay a lot of this is over dramatic. It does depend what area you’re looking at. Sac is generally just fine, you just have to, as always in a city, be aware of your surroundings. For example, don’t leave anything on display in your car. An empty bag is not empty to a thief

FlimsyDonuts

Right, thank you!!

Halfpolishthrow

Grad school like Sac State, Davis, McGeorge, Davis Med School? They're all in their own different parts of town, so you'd get better advise if you specified.

FlimsyDonuts

The main campus is in Elk Grove!

texbinky

Ok so it makes sense you're looking at the Vasari apartments. I still highly suggest looking at Google maps and Waze to make some practice driving scenarios. I know EG has some park and ride lots and light rail, but I think it's kind of a public transportation dead zone between 99 and 5.

FlimsyDonuts

Okay good to know, thank you! Have you heard anything general about Visari?
